On February 1st at about 11:30 AM, the above suspect entered the backyard of a residence on South Brookhurst Street in unincorporated Anaheim. He attempted to steal two birds from their cages when the suspect was confronted by the homeowner. The suspect turned, and walked towards the homeowner while brandishing a black semi-automatic handgun. The homeowner ran inside his residence, with the suspect following. He hid in a bathroom until the suspect entered and confronted the homeowner by pointing the handgun at the victim’s head.

The suspect eventually left the bathroom and encountered additional residents, an adult female and three small children in another room of the house. The suspect then left the home, taking a lap top computer and a cell phone. He was last seen in the alley west of the victim’s home.

The suspect is described as a male, Hispanic, between 25 and 35 years old, about 5’7” with a muscular build, mustache, and shaved head. He was wearing a gray jacket and faded blue jeans.

A Fairfield woman will not serve any more jail time for the deaths of her three young children and niece in an apartment fire in 2010, a judge ruled today. Calling her role in the April 28, 2010 fire a “terrible judgment error,” Solano County Superior Court Judge Peter Foor sentenced 25-year-old Shetarra James this morning to 10 years of felony probation.

A jury convicted James on Nov. 17, 2011 of four counts of involuntary manslaughter and four counts of felony child endangerment. James is set to be released today from Solano County Jail, where she has spent the last two years, defense attorney Amy Morton said. Prosecutor Karen Jensen this morning asked the court for a 24-year state prison sentence for James.

During the trial, Jensen said it was James’ negligent decision to leave her three young children, Robert Charles Jr., 4, Nevaeh Nunn, 2, and Keviana Morgan, 1, and her niece, 2-year-old Natalie Rogers in their enclosed Fairfield apartment with lit candles that caused their deaths. Foor also heard from five people who requested leniency for the defendant, including two jurors in the case and mental health experts who had worked with James.

Moments before handing down the sentence, the court also heard from James herself, who carefully read letters she had written to the four young children who perished in the blaze. Prosecutors in July dropped charges against James’ sister, Latisha James, who was also there during the fire, but said at the time that they still expected to prosecute her separately after Shetarra James’ trial had concluded.

A federal judge in San Francisco today set a trial date of June 18 for a former San Francisco police crime laboratory technician accused of stealing cocaine from the facility. Deborah Madden, 61, was indicted in December on a federal charge of obtaining cocaine by subterfuge in 2009.

The charge carries a possible maximum sentence of four years in prison if she is convicted. The date for the trial, estimated to last one week, was set by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston. Prosecutor Andrew Caputo told the judge that a plea bargain does not appear likely. “Both sides agree a trial is going to be necessary. It is not going to be resolved,” Caputo said. Madden, who is now retired, is free on $25,000 bail while awaiting trial.

She attended the brief hearing but did not speak. Her alleged theft of small amounts of cocaine from the lab’s drug analysis unit led to the closure of the facility and prosecutors’ dismissal of hundreds of criminal cases, among other repercussions.

As many as three shots were fired into a Castroville home Thursday morning, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. At about 7:10 a.m. Thursday, the suspect knocked on the front door of a home in the 10700 block of Davis Street. When the resident answered the door, the suspect fired two to three shots at the resident through a glass door, sheriff’s officials said.

The sheriff’s office believes the suspect was wielding a .22-caliber handgun. The suspect then fled the scene on foot and has not been identified or found, according to the sheriff’s office. No one was injured in the shooting, sheriff’s officials said.

A man accused of a fatal stabbing last week in San Francisco’s Outer Mission neighborhood has pleaded not guilty to murder charges, a district attorney’s office spokeswoman said today. Pedro Zaldana-Ortiz, 23, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to killing 25-year-old Nelson Henriquez, district attorney’s office spokeswoman Stephanie Ong Stillman said. Henriquez was found stabbed in the first block of Regent Street a about 9 p.m. on Jan. 26 by officers who had responded to a report of a fight, police said.

He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Homicide inspectors began investigating the case and identified Zaldana Ortiz, a San Francisco resident, as the suspected stabber, according to police. He was located in the city’s Mission District and arrested on Sunday, police said. Zaldana-Ortiz remains in custody in lieu of $2 million bail and will return to court for a pre-hearing conference on March 7, Stillman said.

* Frank Souza pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of Edward John Schaefer in San Quentin State Prison

A San Quentin State Prison inmate pleaded guilty Thursday to fatally stabbing another inmate who was convicted of killing a Novato girl with his motorcycle in a crosswalk in 2009. Frank Souza, 33, pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of Edward John Schaefer in the Badger Section exercise yard of the prison on July 26, 2010, Marin County Deputy District Attorney A.J. Brady said.

Souza also admitted the special circumstance of lying in wait, Brady said. Souza agreed to plead guilty to avoid the potential of the death penalty for murder while lying in wait. He will be sentenced to life without parole on April 4, Brady said.Souza stabbed Edward John Schaefer, 44, seven times with a homemade weapon. He was indicted in November 2010 on the first-degree murder charge and on two special circumstances — lying in wait and having a prior first-degree murder conviction — that make him eligible for the death penalty.

Schaefer was stabbed two weeks after he started serving 24 years to life for second-degree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.His motorcycle struck and killed 9-year-old Melody Osheroff and maimed her father Aaron Osheroff, now 43, in a Novato crosswalk on May 27, 2009.Souza was serving 60 years to life for the first-degree murder of a homeless man in Santa Clara County. He allegedly killed Schaefer to avenge Osheroff’s death.

A man was shot while sitting in a parked car in East Oakland early this morning, police said. The shooting was reported at 4:55 a.m. near the intersection of Seminary Avenue and Tevis Street. The victim was struck by the gunfire and taken to a hospital but his injuries are not considered life-threatening, according to police. No suspect information was available because the victim was uncooperative with investigators, police said.

A 35-year-old San Jose man suffered a gunshot wound in an early morning shooting in San Jose, according to San Jose police. Officers were dispatched to the 5300 block of Deodara Grove Court after shots were heard in the area around 12:15 a.m.

Arriving officers found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound, police said. The 35-year-old was taken to the hospital by ambulance to treat his injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The suspect was gone when officers arrived at the shooting

When officers responded to a report of shots fired on an Oakland street they found a man who had been shot to death Thursday night, an Oakland police officer said. Police received a call at 8:42 p.m. about shots fired in the 800 block of 26th Street, Oakland police Officer A. Frye said. Officers who responded to the area found a man on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Frye said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Frye said. No suspects are in custody and police are investigating the homicide, Frye said.

* Lask Tsatsaronis arrested at illegal indoor marijuana grow in Half Moon Bay on Marseille Lane

San Mateo County authorities on Wednesday seized more than 1,500 marijuana plants, approximately 19 pounds of processed marijuana and several guns from a Half Moon Bay warehouse complex that was being used to conceal an illegal indoor marijuana grow operation and a residence connected to the operation. The estimated value of the processed marijuana recovered is $60,800 and the value of the plants is approximately $1.2 million, authorities said.

The San Mateo County Narcotics Task Force, with the assistance of the Half Moon Bay Patrol Bureau of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, executed two search warrants Wednesday night after receiving an “investigative lead from a reliable source,” according to the task force. One man, Lask Tsatsaronis, 37, was arrested at the warehouse complex in the 600 block of Marseille Lane without incident. Tsatsaronis is suspected of growing marijuana, possessing marijuana for sale, theft of utilities and possession of stolen property.

An additional 2 pounds of processed marijuana was seized while executing the second warrant at the suspect’s home in the 200 block of Yale Avenue in Princeton, where six handguns — one allegedly stolen out of Suisun City — were also found. Tsatsaronis was released on $15,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned March 5 at 9 a.m. at San Mateo County Northern Superior Court. An investigation into this grow operation is ongoing.
