A Redwood City teenager who is accused of burning her ex-boyfriend by lighting his bed on fire has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder in San Mateo County Court. Jacqueline Rivera, 18, allegedly went to the home of her 21-year-old ex-boyfriend in the early morning hours of April 26 with the intention of talking to him about their relationship, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

The victim refused, and at approximately 3 a.m.,he reportedly woke up in bed and his mattress had been set on fire, prosecutors said. The victim’s father heard him scream and ran to the room with a garden hose to extinguish the flames. The victim suffered minor burns on his hands and arms and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Two weeks after the incident, Rivera allegedly sent a text message to a friend of the victim confessing that she was responsible for lighting the fire, prosecutors said. Police were contacted and Rivera was arrested on May 7. In addition to attempted murder, Rivera on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to arson and residential burglary. Rivera remains in custody on $500,000 bail and is due back in court on June 28.

Two men were arrested after carjacking an elderly woman in San Francisco and then leading authorities on a pursuit across the Bay Bridge to Oakland early this morning, a police spokesman said. Floyd Jordan, 42, and Gabriel Jordan, 35, were arrested after an incident that began at about 1:40 a.m. near the intersection of Battery and Washington streets in the city’s Financial District, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

The pair allegedly broke the window of a car driven by an 83-year-old woman who also had a male passenger in the car, Esparza said. The victims were ordered out of the car by the suspects, who then drove away in the vehicle, which was spotted a short time later traveling east on the Bay Bridge, according to Esparza. Authorities tried to stop the car but it continued into Oakland and exited the highway at West Grand Avenue.

Floyd Jordan got out of the car and tried to run away but was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit, Esparza said. Gabriel Jordan, who was driving the car, continued for a short distance but stopped at Maritime Street and was also taken into custody, Esparza said. The pair were both arrested on suspicion of carjacking, robbery, conspiracy and evading and resisting arrest, he said. Gabriel Jordan was also booked into jail on suspicion of battery, possession of stolen property and an outstanding warrant.

Two banks were robbed within minutes of each other in San Francisco’s Laurel Village Shopping Center this afternoon, a police spokesman said. The robberies were reported at 2:06 p.m. and 2:10 p.m. at separate banks in the 3400 and 3500 blocks of California Street, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said. Police believe the same man committed both robberies, Esparza said.

The suspect, who remains at large, was described as a white man with a mustache. Witnesses in one of the banks said he was between 30 and 40 years old, but people in the other bank said he might have been closer to 50, according to Esparza. No one was injured in either robbery and no weapon was seen, Esparza said.

A Sausalito man who was arrested last month on suspicion of selling stolen bicycles on Craigslist was found dead in an Antioch hotel room Tuesday evening, according to police and the Contra Costa County coroner’s office. Jason Fashimpaur, 41, apparently committed suicide, Antioch police said.

His body was at about 6 p.m. Tuesday in a room at the Ramada Inn at 2436 Mahogany Way. Fashimpaur had been arrested in Sausalito last month for allegedly selling a bicycle for $2,300 on Craigslist that had was stolen from a store in Santa Barbara, Sausalito police said.

The bicycle, a Cervelo R5, had a retail value of $6,700. Police in Sausalito arrested Fashimpaur on April 24 on suspicion of burglary and took him to jail in connection with that burglary, but he posted bail two days later, according to police. Since then, investigators have linked Fashimpaur to at least five other bicycle thefts throughout Northern California, Sausalito police Detective Brian Mather said.

“He would sell them on Craigslist … they were all taken from high-end bike shops,” Mather said.During a search of Fashimpaur’s laptop computer, police also found child pornography files, prompting a separate investigation, Mather said.

* Antolin Garcia-Torres Made a Brief Appearance in Santa Clara County Superior Court for the Accussation of Murdering Sierra LaMar

A 21-year old man accused of murdering missing Morgan Hill teenager Sierra LaMar made a brief appearance in Santa Clara County Superior Court in San Jose this afternoon. Antolin Garcia-Torres, of Morgan Hill, appeared before Judge Jerome Nadler but his arraignment was continued to May 31. He will be represented by the public defender’s office and is being held without bail. Garcia-Torres did not speak in court, and stood subdued with his head bowed.

The district attorney’s office has charged Garcia-Torres with one count of murder, with the special circumstance of committing the murder during a kidnapping. District Attorney Jeff Rosen said after the hearing that Garcia-Torres is eligible for the death penalty, but that his office hasn’t yet decided whether to pursue capital punishment. “My office and law enforcement, aided by many volunteers in this county, continue to devote all available resources to finding her body,” Rosen said of 15-year-old Sierra. ”We hope that will happen soon to give her family some measure of peace,” he said. A probable cause statement from the sheriff’s office that was released by the district attorney’s office today provided more details about the morning of Sierra’s disappearance.

Sierra woke up at 6 a.m. on March 16 and began getting ready for school. Her mother’s boyfriend had left for work, and her mother left a short time later, according to the document. Sierra posted a photo of herself on a social media website at 7 a.m., and text-messaged a classmate at 7:11 a.m. to make plans to meet at school that day to compare their schoolwork and share makeup, according to the statement. She typically left home by 7:15 a.m. and caught the bus to school at an unmarked bus stop several blocks from her house at 7:24 a.m., according to the document. However, she never made it to school that day.

Her cellphone was found the next day in a field within a mile of her home, and two days after her disappearance, her black-and-white Juicy-brand purse was found near a shed in a field less than 2 miles from her house. The purse contained schoolbooks, clothing and other items. DNA collected from the clothing was found to have a “strong association” to that of Antolin Garcia-Torres, who lived 7 miles from Sierra’s home, according to the statement. Garcia-Torres drove a red 1998 Volkswagen Jetta, which was seized by investigators on April 7. DNA found in the car was a likely match to that of Sierra LaMar, the document states.

Sheriff Laurie Smith said at a news conference on Tuesday that investigators have not found any blood, and have not located a murder weapon or identified a motive for the alleged killing. Sierra’s family members are holding out hope for the teen’s safe return, but Smith said investigators believe she is no longer alive. She pointed out that Sierra is very active socially but has not posted on any social media sites or contacted anyone by phone since the morning of her disappearance. The probable cause statement noted that all of Sierra’s personal belongings, including her asthma inhaler, her money, her house keys, and the clothing she was wearing the morning of her disappearance, have been located.

Smith said there is no indication that Sierra and Garcia-Torres knew each other.

Two Santa Rosa men were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of stealing valuable coins and jewelry during a party at a Windsor home last week, a Sonoma County sheriff’s sergeant said. Agustin Lamar Delariva II, 20, and Jorge Alejandro Lopez-Madriz, 21, were taken into custody at Delariva’s residence, Sgt. Carlos Basurto said.

Inside the residence, sheriff’s detectives located the stolen coins and jewelry, worth $110,000, that were taken from the Windsor home in the 200 block of Pleasant Avenue on May 15, Basurto said. Delariva was booked into Sonoma County Jail for grand theft, receiving stolen property and two outstanding misdemeanor warrants, Basurto
said. Lopez-Madriz was booked for receiving stolen property and a violation of probation, Basurto said.

A man was shot near the Alice Griffith public housing complex in San Francisco’s Bayview District on Wednesday night, police said. The shooting was reported at 9:18 p.m. near Gilman Avenue and Hawes Street. Officers at a police substation at the housing complex heard gunshots, went outside, and found the 18-year-old victim,according to police. The victim had been shot in the shoulder and arm and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are not considered life-threatening, police said. No arrests have been made in the case and no suspect information was immediately available this morning.

A woman arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence near Santa Rosa on Tuesday assaulted a California Highway Patrol officer while being booked into jail, according to the CHP. Officers responded to reports of a reckless driver on northbound U.S. Highway 101 near Bicentennial Avenue at 2:55 p.m. The CHP then received reports that the vehicle, a 1981 Datsun 280ZX, had parked across a curb on Old Redwood Highway at Ursuline Road, and that the driver was seen stumbling away.

CHP officers arrived and found a woman lying in the dirt about 30 feet from the car. The woman was so intoxicated she was unable to stand on her own, and officers helped her to her feet and escorted her back toward her car, according to the CHP. As they were walking with her, she attempted to break away from the officers. She was then arrested on suspicion of DUI. The CHP identified her as Ellen Underwood, 32, of Oakland.

Once in the back of the patrol car, she again attempted to escape, kicking at the car’s windows, according to the CHP. After arriving at the Sonoma County Jail, Underwood kicked an officer in the leg and torso as he was preparing paperwork, and continued to resist jail personnel violently, CHP officials said. Underwood has a prior conviction for DUI, according to the CHP.
