The story was, in a nutshell, that you shouldn’t dismiss your shots first time round.  I’ve often heard photographers not processing their pictures until up to a year later.  Reason being, you look at them in a totally different way when you revisit them.  They’re completely new and fresh and so is your perspective.  I didn’t adhere to this advice, and probably never will, mainly because I’m incredible impatient and want to edit my pictures before I’ve even got to my computer.  It’s exciting.  You’ve spent all day taking shots and your dreaming of that one amazing picture that will adorn your wall in a nice frame….’Yes, I took that picture’.  I’m going off on a bit of a tangent here so lets bring it back.  I took that picture of two wheelbarrows at Whipsnade Zoo last weekend.  On first run through my 600 ish photos I completely dismissed it, then again the second time round.  I’d processed everything I wanted to and seemed relatively happy with the results.  Then, on a final run through of the pictures I saw the wheelbarrows and thought I’d do a little cropping etc to see what it would look like.  I took the picture in the first place, so there was intent there.  Turned out to be one of my most popular pictures to date.  I uploaded it right after writing my blog post and it quickly snowballed.  To date it’s had nearly 2k views, in a week, and over 90 favorites and counting.

It just goes to show, you should never write off a picture first, or even second time round.  Re-visit your picture in future and look at them with a fresh eye.

I had a great day.  We practically had Whipsnade Zoo to ourselves because it’s wet and cold here in the UK.  Standard.  So, that meant no screaming children, no smudged fingers on glass, no jostling for camera position etc.  Lovely.

So, I’m slightly cheating here, the majority of pictures were taken on my Nikon D3100 with a 200mm VR lens.  I generally use that for nature/landscape.  I’d love to have been using the X100 more, but I simply wouldn’t have got half the shots I wanted with it.  Funnily enough it really made me realise just how impressive the little Fuji is.  Comparing out of camera jpegs to each other is simply night and day.  I know it’s not comparing apples to apples, but still, the X100 is mind bogglingly good.  Anywhere here are a few pics from our day out, only the first two are X100 (sorry)…

The Fuji X100S has hit the shelves in the UK.  In my other post regarding UK stock, Fuji hadn’t given a solid date regarding stock coming to the UK.  Turns out you can now get it at Amazon.  I haven’t looked around anywhere else, I was just having a gander over on Amazon, like you do!

At time of writing it says they have one in stock at the moment and more due in on the 19th March, so the start of next week.

Buy the Fuji X100s Here - currently listed at £1039.  It’s also sold by Amazon, not one of the third party sellers.  Stock is currently limited all over the world.  As I understand it they’ve had some manufacturing issues.  So, you’ll need to snap it up!

I was fortunate enough to get this one forwarded onto me from a colleague at work.  It’s called this ‘This is Colossal‘.  This is a serious blog that I can highly recommend.  It covers not only photography but also some really cool art.  Have a gander.  There are a few posts that really caught my eye:

When is the Fuji X100S UK release date?  Fuji are yet to actually release an official date.  There are a few UK based camera stores that are allowing you to pre-order, but with no official release date published on their site.

I keep checking on Amazon to see when they start to even show it.  Still nothing as yet.

The UK release date has actually been penned in for March/April this year.  The guys in the US already have stock and a lot of them over at the Fuji X Forum have their hands on stock already.  Lucky guys.  So, it would suggest that it’s not all too far away for the UK.

Personally, I don’t see the added value that the X100S demands.  It’s likely to cost over £1000 which is more than double the price of the current model at just a snip over £500.  For double the price I certainly expect double the camera.  I know they boast faster focus times (0.08s) but I’m still not having problems with mine.  Plus, if I’m going for street photography then I’m using zone focussing anyway.  I really don’t see the issue here.  The effective pixels have also been lifted from 12 to 16, but as with all of these things, it’s the person taking the camera.  Give me 24 megapixles and the pictures will only still be as good as the settings I dial in.  I’d like to try one out and compare it with my X100, just to see like for like whether it’s worth the extra outlay.  I reckon there will still be plenty of buyers for the X100S, but can they really justify the cost.  If you read the Fuji X forum then I’m sure they’ll justify the outlay.  Easy to get caught up in the next iterations though, just look at the iphone sales.  You just have to have the latest model!  If I was upgrading now from £500 to over £1k then I’d easily be going for the X-pro 1.

A lot of the photos that were intended for black and white I kept in colour.  Like the one of the girl in the holocaust memorial.  I just happened to catch her when I turned the corner (like you do) and the yellow bag just looked ace against the darkness of the concrete blocks.  I often try all picture in both black and white & colour and then decide which I like most.  So, here’s a small selection of my pictures…
This guy got particularly angry with me.  It was in a coffee shop across the otherside of the city.  I tried to catch a picture of him when we arrived, he was quite a cool chap.  However, he immediately said not to before I even got a chance.  Clearly he’s a bit sensitive about it.  I had to take this one really quickly before he turned around.  Luckily he didn’t catch me.
This one was particularly amusing.  As with anywhere in Berlin there seemed to be constant building going on.  In the centre they had an underpass where they had framed these glass cut throughs.  I loved the way they framed the building work as it happened, lovely touch.
Saw this guy busking as we walked down into the SBahn.  The colours looked ace and I particularly loved the graffiti running down the wall above his head.  He wasn’t too shabby on the organ either!
Only reason I included this is because it reminded me of something from a film.  I imagine that bus blowing up or something.  That sounds a bit odd I know, but it’s pretty cool.  At night when we walked past the same spot we just saw this street totally empty aside from the van in the middle of the street.  It looked pretty cool whatever time of day it was.
