Souq Waqif is an important souq in Doha, in the state of Qatar. Literally translated to "the standing market," this shopping destination is renowned for selling traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It is also home to dozens of restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world, as well as Shisha lounges. Although this market dates back at least a hundred years, it has been recently restored back to its original glory. It is now considered one of the top tourist destinations within Doha.

Thousands of people from across the region frequent this market to purchase traditional goods.

Lately Souq Waqif became a hotspot for art galleries and workshops, hosting several art galleries and events. It also hosts local concerts during the holiday seasons.

سوق واقف هو سوق تقليدي يعتبر من أهم المعالم السياحية في مدينة الدوحة. يجمع السوق بين العراقة والأصالة وبين المدنية الحديثة، وهو أشهر معلم سياحي وتراثي يقصده السياح والمواطنون. يشتهر السوق ببيع المشغولات التراثية وتناول الطعام العربي والشعبي والعالمي.

تفتح معظم الأماكن في سوق واقف يوميّا من 10 قبل الظهر حتّى 12 ظهرًا ومن 4 عصراً حتّى 10 مساءً، ويعتبر السوق واحداً من أكثر الأمكنة حيوية في الدوحة وهو يضم عدداً متزايداً من المطاعم التي تقدم الطعام القطريّ التقليديّ ومختلف المأكولات الخاصة بالشرق الأوسط.

هناك العديد من المقاهي والمطاعم التقليديّة التي تفتح أبوابها حتّى ساعة متأخّرة (بعضها يفتح 24 ساعة). تقدم المطاعم المأكولات المحلية الشهيّة بالإضافة إلى الشيشة أو النرجيلة التقليديّة، كما تقدّم عروض دوريّة للرقصات والموسيقى الشعبية، ولاسيما في الاحتفالات الكبيرة.

On our last trip on board Fulk Al-Salam from Sharjah to Fujairah through The Strait of Hormuz last November. At the very tip of Ras Masoud we faced a mechanical problem with the vessel which we could not solve at sea. The decision was to go back all the way to Riviera Boat Ship Yard in Sharjah for dry docking and repairing. Estimated time for repair was a week. Instead of waiting in Dubai we decided to go to Oman by car and explore Qantab and Masira Island which we have not seen before. We spent four nights altogether in Oman, two of which was on the island. Here is a pictorial record of the trip.

تبذل حكومة دبي جهودا حثيثة في المحافظة على التراث وتحويل المناطق التراثية القديمة الى مناطق جذب سياحي وثقافي. ومن المناطق التراثية المهمة في دبي (منطقة البستكية) بمساكنها التراثية ومبانيها المتراصة وسككها القديمة وهي من أعرق أحياء مدينة دبي القديمة. والبستكية تمثل مرحلة مهمة في تاريخ العمارة والتطور المدني والحضري لمدينة دبي. وتعود التسميه الى السكان الاوائل لهذه المنطقه والنازحين من منطقة بستك على الساحل الايراني من الخليج العربي وكانوا في غالبيتهم من التجار الميسورين ويتجلى ذلك في تصميم البيوت وما تحويه من اخشاب وزخارف جبسيه وملاقف الهواء التي تعرف محليا "البارجيل" وتقع منطقة البستكية في الجهة الشرقية لبر دبي بمحاذاة الخور بطول 300 متر تقريبا وعرض 200 متر وقد بني أول بيت من بيوت البستكية عام 1896 واستمر البناء في تلك المنطقة حتى ستينيات القرن الماضي لتشهد بعدها هجرة السكان الى المناطق الحديثة من دبي

This is the next super-yacht set to hit the world's oceans - which comes complete with its own functioning volcano and floating tropical islands.
The vessel - dubbed the 'Tropical island Paradise' - has been designed by British boat builders Yacht Island Design, from Derby, Derbys - some 90 miles from the sea.
The extravagant 295ft ship boasts a towering volcano with a cascading waterfall which feeds the swimming pool.

Studio director Rob McPherson at the Derbyshire firm, who have also created the Streets of Monaco super-yacht, said: 'The exterior was designed to give the impression of waves breaking around a volcanic island, whilst maintaining the look of a contemporary yacht design.
'It comes with its own private beach cove and a waterfall cascading down from a volcano.
'This design centres around a secluded island paradise, with elements inspired by the islands of the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Polynesia. It is set to be a big hit when it comes onto the market.'
The lavish yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests - and can travel along at a top speed of 15 knots.
The main deck is a secluded beach 'cove' of cabanas surrounding a massive ocean view swimming pool.

Spectacular: There is also a huge helicopter landing pad for those quick trips to shore

And should the millionaire future owners get tired of taking a dip in the pool, they can sail out into the sea on their very own floating island complete with deck chairs and palm trees.
McPherson added: 'We had two reasons for designing such a boat. The first being that it's good fun, and secondly the current market is pretty saturated with designs that look fairly similar.
'Our mission is to work on incredibly fun designs and carve a niche for ourselves within the market, a place where other designers fear to tread.'
Inside the huge, towering volcano is a cinema, library, games room, gym, spa and VIP suites - including an owners pad spread over two decks.
The boat - which has yet to hit the market and hasn't had a price set - is causing waves in the boat building world with its unique design.

الصيد بـ "الضغوة" يعتمد على سير القارب في عرض البحر مسافة بحرية لا تقل عن أربعة كيلومترات ويتم إلقاء شبكة ذات فتحات صغيرة ويصل طولها الى 1500 متر في أعماق البحر بينما يمسك الصيادون على القارب بطرفيها ثم يتحرك القارب ببطء نحو الشاطئ فتتخذ الشبكة شكل القوس لجمع كميات كبيرة من الأسماك يتم بعدها مراوغة الأسماك وإخافتها لتتوجه إلى مؤخرة الشبكة وتسمى "المحصر" وعند وصول طرفي الشبك الى الساحل يتم جرها باستخدام سيارات الدفع الرباعي وتجميعه حتى يخرج الشبك بكامله بما يحمله من صيد.

Somali pirates hijacked a yacht with four Americans on board Friday afternoon in the Indian Ocean, officials said.

Omar Jamal, first secretary at the United Nations' Somali mission, identified the yacht as the S/V Quest.
He said Friday that the mission was calling for the immediate release of the hostages and all other captives who were in the hands of the pirates.
The hijacking was first reported by Ecoterra International, which monitors regional maritime activity, according to the French news agency AFP.
Ecoterra said the S/V Quest was seized 275 miles off the coast of Oman.

"S/V Quest was attacked by pirates in the Indian Ocean and the four Americans on board are being held hostage," AFP quoted Ecoterra as saying. "The sailing yacht was reportedly ... en route from India to Mina Raysut, the industrial port of Salalah, Oman," Ecoterra added.

The S/V Quest's owners, Jean and Scott Adam, are seven years into their round-the-world journey from California, a maritime website. Jean Scott is a retired dentist who says on the website, which details their travels, she "has always had an interest in the biological sciences and the natural world around us all (otherwise known as God's creation)."
The New York Times reported that the pirates appeared to be taking the hostages to the Somali shore.

“While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it back into the ocean. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.

The old man smiled, and said, "I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?"

To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, "But young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"

The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, "It made a difference for that one."

Frenchman with amputated limbs completes Channel swim

A Frenchman whose arms and legs had to be amputated following an electrical accident has successfully completed his attempt to swim the English Channel.

Philippe Croizon had set off from Folkestone in Kent at 0645 BST.
The 42-year-old, who swims using prosthetic legs, finished the 21 mile (34km) challenge by reaching Cap Gris Nez in more than 14 hours.
Sixteen years ago, Mr Croizon suffered a severe electric shock while removing a television aerial from a roof.
A current surged through him from a nearby powerline and doctors were forced to amputate his limbs.
Mr Croizon reached the French coast at 2013 BST, far ahead of the 24 hours he had set himself.
His team believe this is a record time for a disabled swimmer.
Mr Croizon told the BBC that at no point did he feel he was not going to make it, despite pains and aches all over his body.
Philippe Croizon's father said his son had had favourable wind conditions and had even had three dolphins swimming alongside him for a period- a "sign of good luck".
Mr Croizon had been preparing for the challenge for two years.

When boaters move up into large motoryachts it is only natural that they have apprehensions about docking – particularly in a strong cross wind or cross current situation when there is only 6” of clearance on either side of the boat. The solution was introduced several years ago when Volvo Penta introduced the IPS pod drive system with joystick. Later joystick systems came out for other brands of diesels and then gas engines and still later for stern drives, too. But what wasn’t talked about much was how much more the pods and the joystick technology cost, which was as much as an additional $25k in some boats. Meridian Yachts has had a solution for the last year that solved both the difficulty of docking, and the high cost problem with a system called “Docking On Command.” It is simply a bow thruster and a stern thruster built into the boat with an easy-to-visualize control mechanism at the helm.
