Instead of a final, play-tested product, Paleo mistakenly offered up a thoroughly buggy, almost unplayable alpha build. How and why something so bizarre could happen is unknown, but it was an inauspicious debut to be sure.

On the zombie side, there is a zombie called the “Whitey.” Every round there is one “Whitey on the zombie team, and if he hits a survivor, that survivor has a chance of infecting being infected. If a survivor gets hit by the “Whitey” and he is infected, then he has about a minute before he turns to the other side.
I would most definitely recommend this game to anyone out there that has a computer good for
gaming. And remember, it’s free!

You play as the titular Marvel mutant, with the game’s muddled storyline mimicking and expanding on events in the movie of the same name. Along the way, you take Wolverine through the jungles of Africa, the hidden Weapon X base at Alkali Lake, the interior (and exterior) of a massive casino, and more. You have to take on groups of increasingly aggressive and dangerous enemies, solve not-too-taxing environmental puzzles, as well as go up against several guest boss villains from the Marvel universe. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t do a great job of introducing these nefarious individuals–such as the Blob and Gambit–and often throws them in with little explanation of why Wolverine needs to beat on them in the first place.

Review: Hydrophobia Prophecy

Hydrophocia Prophecy is significantly improved then the Original Hydrophobia, but not all the issues have been resolved.

Hydrophobia Prophecy is an improved version of Hydrophocia which was released last year on Xbox Live Arcade. Hydrophobia is a tense third-person adventure, with an innovative physics engine which accurately simulates the flow of huge amounts of water.
This normally life-giving liquid dominates the environments, forcing you to deal with the game's challenging puzzles and action in surprising new ways.
The events unfold on a huge ship, The Queen of the World, which contains the Five Founding Fathers, who are corporate men who have prospered while others have struggled to sustain themselves during the massive population surge. The ship is attacked by terrorists calling themselves the Malthusians (named after politician Thomas Malthus, who predicted that population growth would outstrip agricultural development.) Cue the reluctant hero, systems engineer Kate Wilson, who attempts to uncover the terrorist plot and save the ship's passengers. Wilson is a believable central character, and it's refreshing to see a strong female protagonist who is able to overcome tough situations without the aid of a male hero.

In the PC version of the game, the story is fleshed out with additional cutscenes and an extra layer to the terrorists' plot. Rather than just causing terror, the Malthusians are aiming to steal technology from The Queen of the World and weaponize it. You are also introduced to the leader of the terrorists for the first time. These new story elements create a great deal more intrigue and add to the game's violent vision of Earth's future. Unfortunately, not all of these additions are explored to their full potential, especially when you reach the new ending, which comes very suddenly and doesn't really tie up any of the story threads. In addition to the new plot elements, the voice of Scoot has been recast, which makes a big difference. The laughably bad acting in the original detracted from the events of the story and often spoiled the dark atmosphere. This role is now delivered in a more convincing manner, which makes the story much more believable.

When the ship is damaged by the terrorists' attack, Kate must move through its dark interior trying to halt their progress in any way she can. With the hull breached, you have to contend with highly realistic flowing water that, while often a source of tension, can be manipulated to solve puzzles or gain a tactical advantage in combat. In puzzles, water is generally used to help you traverse an area or reach something that was previously inaccessible. One such scenario has you destroy a section of the ship's already-damaged hull to fill a large area with water, which then allows Kate to swim up to a spot that was previously out of the reach. In combat, exploding a floating fuel drum creates huge waves that unbalance your foes or send them flying into the environment, knocking them out and drowning them. You can even start oil fires on the surface of the water and then manipulate the waves to push the flames toward hiding enemies.
Hydrophobia's third-person combat will feel familiar if you've ever played a cover-based shooter; Kate takes refuge behind obstacles and can then lean around them to take out enemies. Her handgun can be upgraded with different ammo types; you begin with stun rounds that have to be charged by holding down the fire button. The stun is nonlethal unless you hit an enemy many times, so early on in the game, it is important to use the environment against your foes by shooting leaking gas pipes and overhanging electrical cables. Ammo upgrades are far more effective, though they're also scarcer. They range from regular bullets and electrically charged shots to incredibly useful remote-detonated explosives. The rarity of these ammo types heightens the tension because you are constantly under pressure to make sure that your shots are accurate. If you're wasteful with your attacks, you'll be reduced to using the stun shot again.

Unfortunately, you don't get much time to use these new skills before the game is over, so the combat issues from the original game remain for most of Prophecy's Story mode. The lack of a melee attack continues to be an issue in Prophecy, especially in areas where environmental kills aren't possible. You are forced to repeatedly shoot enemies with the stun shot if you run out of other ammo, and there is no way to stun enemies and then quickly finish them off up close. The enemies themselves lack of variety; you spend the whole game fighting the same nameless, faceless terrorists, and there's little more variety in their weapons or attack patterns. One section also features enemies that constantly respawn as soon as your back is turned, making for an intensely frustrating fight before you earn the new water powers.

Description: Controversy is an undocumented feature in games designed by outspoken developer Derek Smart, whose previous work includes the Battlecruiser series of space simulations. So perhaps it’s no surprise that his latest effort, an expanded and updated take on the Battlecruiser universe called Universal Combat (which began life as Battlecruiser Generations), was the subject of litigation due to publisher DreamCatcher Interactive’s last-minute decision to ship the game as a $19.99 budget release. Unfortunately, Universal Combat probably just isn’t worth all the hassle. Much like its predecessor, Battlecruiser Millennium, this wildly ambitious simulation is torpedoed by an almost incomprehensible interface, the absence of a tutorial both in-game and in the poorly organized manual, numerous bugs, and many fit and finish issues, including dated production values. While it may contain incredible depth and a range of activities that let you wage war in almost every conceivable fashion, all of these features are inaccessible unless you have hundreds of hours available to figure everything out, and even then, the quality of these elements is uniformly lacking. This is the Rosetta Stone of computer gaming.

You’ll also immediately recognize many familiar problems. Universal Combat is more of a demo than a completed product. You can catch glimpses of real depth on occasion, though you have to play for many hours to find these highlights, and you must often play for much longer to fully understand what you lucked into during the first go-round. The biggest problem is the lack of tutorials. No step-by-step guidance is provided in the game or in the manual, although you can download a 44-page PDF tutorial for the demo. The latter does contain a lot of information (scattered over nearly a hundred pages), although the organization is slipshod, and there is no index. As a result, you can’t look up basic terms or skip around to answer questions as they arise while playing. The in-game description of the roam mode is fitting for the game, as a whole, in that you’re really abandoned with “no hints, no tips, no directions, and certainly no instructions as to what you can and cannot do.”

Late last year, Atari and developer Eden Studios released Test Drive Unlimited for the Xbox 360. Purportedly the first “massively open online racing” game, Unlimited provided you with a wide-open setting (the Hawaiian island of Oahu), a myriad of slick rides, tons of different races to take part in, and an online mode that actually let you occupy the same basic driving space as other online players and challenge them in competition. Not everything the game did on the 360 worked brilliantly, but it was an inventive and unique piece of technology that was impressive in its own right. Now the game has come to the PC, and for all intents and purposes, this version is nearly identical to the 360 game. It’s a little rougher around the edges than its 360 counterpart, but if you never played the 360 version and think the idea of racing around Hawaii while bumping up against other online players sounds like fun, this version’s worth a look. You start by picking a basic character model to represent yourself, and you’re whisked away to fabulous Hawaii to buy a car and a house, do a lot of random racing, and drive hitchhikers and models around the island for some reason. That’s about all there is to the premise. While it’s not shocking that a racing game wouldn’t have a major, in-depth storyline, the way the game introduces itself and the open-ended nature of the game world give you the impression that there might be some kind of plot to tie everything you do together. There isn’t. The lack of a cohesive thread to the missions and races does make Test Drive seem a bit pointless, but after a while, you cease to care and find yourself oddly engaged by this scattershot series of objectives.

It helps that there is quite a lot to do on the island. The objectives themselves don’t extend beyond races, time trials, speed challenges, and some basic delivery missions, but there are enough of them to keep you going as you explore the massive island of Oahu. The way the game forces you to explore is clever. You start out with only a few available mission icons on the huge world map, but as time goes on, you’ll see more and more begin to pop up across the entire stretch of the island. If you happen to have driven through a road where an objective resides, you can simply click on that icon on the map and be instantly transported there. But if an icon appears on a road you’ve never driven on before, you have to drive there to access it. What this does is force you to cruise through just about every nook and cranny of Oahu without being overly pushy about it. There’s often more than enough races and missions available at any given time, so if you don’t feel like driving halfway across the island to see something new, you won’t necessarily be hurting for things to do right where you already are.

Description: The kneejerk reaction when booting up Sinking Island is, naturally, “BioShock much?” A quick glance at the cover art of this PC adventure will yield the same: It looks like the tower of Sagorah rises straight out of the ocean in all its art-deco glory. The comparisons end there, thankfully. In fact, you’re stranded on — you guessed it — a sinking island, whereas Rapture has already been (purposefully) sunk.
Walter Jones, a rich octogenarian of 500 pounds who built the palatial hotel/vacation home on Sagorah Island, has apparently fallen to his death off a cliff after someone gave his fancy wheelchair a nasty shove. Since only Jones’ grandchildren, his architect, and his lawyer, plus a couple islanders were around, the recently arrived inspector, Jack Norm, has quite a case on his hands. The situation isn’t helped by the terrible weather. Of course, it turns out various parties have grudges against the old man, and the family drama heats up even as your interest in playing the game cools down.

Description: Just like the previous Rainbow Six games, Raven Shield lets you lead a group of elite international counterterrorists known as Rainbow. These guys are equipped with high-tech gear and high-powered firearms and are itching for an opportunity to shout, “Tango down!” In Raven Shield, you’ll help the Rainbow operatives on a mission with a rather forgettable plot that involves a James Bond-style madman and Nazi loot from World War II. In fact, as you play the rather short single-player campaign, you’ll find that storytelling isn’t one of Raven Shield’s strong suits. You’ll receive clear text and audio mission briefings and see a few well-directed but brief cutscenes, but these sequences don’t quite create a strong sense of drama or immersion. Rather, the storytelling feels like merely a flimsy framework to hang the tactical combat on.
Also, the mission goals sometimes tend to blur together into a repetitive string of “Kill the terrorists and rescue the hostages.” This sometimes makes the Rainbow team seem like a regular SWAT team instead of a truly elite international organization. And unlike the classic SWAT 3, Raven Shield rarely creates any real emotional connection with the hostages. In many cases, they’ll essentially be a mission goal, similar to the hostages in the extremely popular Counter-Strike–you won’t even see them until the very end of a mission.

Announced in January as part of a three-game announcement that includes Need for Speed: Nitro and Need for Speed World Online, Shift takes a new, more realistic approach to racing and will be going head-to-head against seasoned pros Gran Turismo and Forza for the attention of serious racing fans One of the immediately obvious innovations in Shift is the way it tries to simulate crashes; the development team is trying to re-create the jarring, often fear-filled experience. In addition to motion blur, you’ll experience some violent camera shake–not too dissimilar to an onboard camera during crash replays–and you’ll also experience temporary vision blur after crashes. This is accompanied by the typical audio effects involved in a high-speed collision, but also additional sound effects from your driver, such as a stress-induced spike in heart rate and even a sharp gasp of breath before impact. Lots of other small effects have gone into making Shift feel as realistic as possible, including tunnel vision at high speeds, subtle reflections coming off the windshield, and heat haze emitted from engines.
Shift is all about your experience as a race driver. The action will take place on existing, licensed racetracks, on new racetracks created for Shift, and on street circuits. There is no open-road racing this time around, and we were promised you won’t be pursued by the police or have to take part in old-fashioned street races. Instead, Shift will feature 15 real-world locations in addition to fictitious tracks. We got a chance to see the Brands Hatch Race Circuit in Kent and a new London street circuit. The Brands Hatch course looks to be a faithful re-creation of the ex-Formula One racetrack, with a mix of long straights, sweeping curves, sharp corners, and hairpin turns offering variety throughout. Zipping around it with an Audi RS4 was a great introduction.

There have been a few wayward attempts at innovation – such as FIFA 09′s introduction of mouse and keyboard play – but it’s been lagging behind its console counterparts in almost every regard, the PC version of FIFA 10 a pale imitation of its full-blooded brethren.With the introduction of FIFA Superstars and FIFA Online, it’s tempting to think that, for the core FIFA experience, EA Sports has indeed abandoned the PC – or at the very least wilfully neglected it. It’s an approach that’s acknowledged by the talk surrounding the reveal of FIFA 11 on the PC – in the past, PC has suffered, but this year EA Sports is keen to make amends.
It’s doing that by using, for the very first time, the engine that’s propelled the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions to such success. Confusingly EA insists on calling it the next-generation engine, and while it’s not as good as what we’re expecting from whatever Microsoft and Sony’s hardware divisions have lined up for us in the future it’s certainly impressive.

The heart of Left 4 Dead 2 is the five campaign maps that take the survivors through a wide variety of terrain in the Deep South. From murky swamplands to a creepy carnival ground, from flooded suburbs to claustrophobic city streets, every environment is detailed and immersive. Clever design touches abound, some of which are clues that show you which way to progress. It’s deceptively easy to get turned around, especially since you aren’t the only ones who have been leaving piles of bodies around. Left 4 Dead 2′s environments help tell a story, and as you travel through the remains of a massive government-organized evacuation effort, you get a better sense of how it all went down. The campaigns now string together to make one long adventure, and though the oppressive, desperate mood seethes more potently this time around, there is still plenty of levity and high-impact excitement. Well-timed survivor quips make trudging through zombie-infested swamps a bit less nerve-racking, and thunderous rainstorms make a tense final stand (the moments right before your rescue) even more dramatic. The sound design is a standout once again, filling the air with eerie strains and helpful cues, as well as conveying the full range of the survivors’ emotions. This rich atmosphere is enhanced by the wider variety of choke points and final stands, all of which give the campaigns their own unique pace.

Description: The first thing you can’t help but notice about Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is its aesthetic. The entire game is seemingly played from the perspective of an invisible drunk who, armed with the world’s worst camcorder, has decided to follow protagonist Lynch everywhere he goes. The shakiness of the camera is optional, but other effects such as compression artifacts, lens flare, and lights smearing vertically across the screen are mandatory. You might initially find this visual style quite distracting, but because the treatment is always consistent, it doesn’t take long to get used to it. Opting to keep the shaky cam switched on can make the game a little more challenging in spots because it interferes with your aim, but other than a few cut scenes in which the camera sways for no apparent reason, its movement is very much in keeping with your own and with your surroundings. And, invisible cameraman theories aside, it makes sense that your view and your aim would be a little compromised when sprinting as fast as you can or getting knocked to the ground after taking a bullet–both of which you spend a lot of time doing.

Yeah, believe it or not there’s a third Ice Age movie in theaters, and that means that there’s yet another film-inspired videogame for you to sit down with. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs lets you play as your favorite fuzzy critters from the movie and provides you with a tale that complements the movie — generally, you’re playing the parts of the film that weren’t shown in theaters.
Is it a Game of the Year contender? No, but Ice Age shouldn’t be written off as movie cash-in, either. Classifying the gameplay can be a bit difficult. In the beginning, it’s pretty much a straight platformer with you taking Sid the Sloth through the paces — baby-proofing the wooly mammoth nursery, battling hedgehog-looking dudes, and collecting fruit to be used as currency. However, the deeper you get, the more there is to do. Later levels have you playing in a shooting gallery where you blast passing dinos with your plant shooter, flying pterodactyls in massive dogfights as Buck, and plowing through side-scrolling levels as Scrat.
This variety is appreciated and a nice change of pace, but in the end it won’t do much for the older players among us because the game’s pretty frickin’ easy. You have a health meter in the upper-left corner that’ll deplete when you get hit or whatever, but there are plenty of strawberries to pick up to refill that meter as well as the ability to purchase upgrades. From there, it’s just hitting bad guys, learning where to roll your egg so you don’t die, and so on.

It’s not all good news, though; the game suffers from some noticeable performance issues even on rigs that far exceed the unreasonably high recommended system specifications, and you need to be signed in to Windows Live to save your progress in the single-player game. This should have been the best GTA game yet, but it’s inferior to its console counterparts.

Description: Eragon the video game is based on the movie, which itself is based on the book of the same name. It’s a typical fantasy world full of dragons, wizards, and magic, which would seem to lend itself well to a video game adaptation in the vein of the very good series of Lord of the Rings action games that came out alongside those movies. In fact, the Eragon game bears a striking resemblance to those Lord of the Rings games, which only makes sense because the games were all developed by the same company. But while the Lord of the Rings games were well-polished action games, Eragon feels unfinished and lazily thrown together. It’s the same basic hack-and-slash principle that’s readily accessible to just about any fan of the film, but Eragon feels like a skeleton of a game that’s been padded out with some licensed content. There’s not nearly enough to make the game interesting or even remotely worth playing, though. The action is mindless and repetitive at best, and buggy and unresponsive at worst. In addition, the presentation ranges from bland to ugly, the game is short, the fixed camera angles are frustrating, and there is no online play. Even for a straightforward action game,
Eragon has very little to offer.

Delta Force Xtreme 2 is a first-person shooter where, as a part of the Delta Force Special Operations team, you must protect US interests by parachuting into various third-world countries and decimating a hodgepodge alliance of terrorists, drug smugglers, and Uzbek separatists. The game’s primary appeal lies in huge multiplayer matches with vast, sprawling terrain and support for up to 150 players. However, in DFX2 even the multiplayer experience rarely rises above mediocre, while the single-player never even comes close. With gameplay and graphics that lag behind other military-themed shooters, Delta Force Xtreme 2 offers little to distinguish itself. DFX2 follows the Delta Force formula of large, open maps and subpar graphics with a limited variety of simplistic textures. Even budget game caveats won’t prepare you for these graphics, which compare negatively to older military FPS games that sell for even less. Technically speaking, the game doesn’t seem to have advanced much beyond 2005′s Delta Force Xtreme, which certainly wasn’t ahead of its time. As a result, the absurd physics destroy any sense of realism by making vehicles feel like bumper cars, while weapon recoil is comparable to your average super soaker. In multiplayer, nobody plays the terrorist; instead, everyone looks the same, and you can only identify your teammates by the presence of names above their heads. The advertised 150-player limit for games seems to be mostly theoretical–you’ll be lucky to play on a server with one-third of that number. Similarly, the 40 multiplayer maps are mostly variations of the same batch of maps for the five different competitive game modes.
Highlights include the King of the Hill and Capture the Flag game modes, in which good teamwork allows you to dominate the competition. You can hop into a vehicle even while carrying the flag, which is great fun, but given how tough it is to knock out any vehicle larger than a dirt bike, it’s not so fun when the tables are turned. Helicopters are powerful, especially in the hands of a dedicated team, and are actually easy to fly, which makes them a favorite among vehicles. In general, death is waiting for you behind every polygon, and it will likely find you without warning and from long range because the giant outdoor maps are a sniper’s paradise.
