THOUGHTS
Though not as action packed as the last episode, this episode of Frontier does quite well in the drama department and the characters get a more detailed exposure this time around. It was revealed that Ozma was not Ranka's real brother and he was actually the pilot who failed to save her family who was attacked by the Vajra. In addition, Ranka has no recollection of that memory due to a mental block. Alto also managed to clear away his doubts about himself thanks to Ranka and has now joined the Skull Squadron as a pilot. Ranka's singing this episode was absolutely beautiful. If Sheryl's songs were filled with fire and passion, Ranka's was full of compassion and motherly warmth. It is also revealed that Ranka will be taking part in the Miss Macross competition. I do hope she would win and end up with Alto.

Ok, now THIS is a dilemma. Two versions of the same magnificent figure released at together. Is Max Factory conspiring to drive otakus bankrupt? Both sculpts of Miki are absolutely gorgeous and I'm not quite sure which one should i get, mind you figures are not cheap to start with. I prefer the version of her in the blue dress with shorter hair but i also like the nekomimi accessory that comes with the other one.

I'm in despair!! Abundance of great figures have left my wallet in despair!!!

Why Kanokon is the best fanservice show EVER.

Love it or hate it, you have to show Kanokon the respect it deserves. Never in my career of anime watching have i seen such a blatant disregard for censorship rules and moral decency in an anime. The sheer amount of fanservice here is enough to turn a gay man straight and a monk into a perv. Dont believe me? screencaps from the three episodes that have aired would tell you otherwise.

Loving will be had.

Hugs will be given freely.

Hair will glow.

Traps will be fawned upon.

Lingerie will be had.

Everything will seem normal.

Blood will be lost.

Paradise will open.

Tsundere will be deadpan.

Distractions will be had.

Skirts will fly.

voices will scream.

Subs will be misleading

I have heard much criticism and praise for this show due to its phenomenal amount of fanservice. To this i say the producers are just giving the people what they want, no-strings-attached fanservice. If you don't like it don't touch it because even a glimpse of it would prove that you approve of it so shut it and embrace the show for what it is.

This show strikes my fancy because the producers in all their wisdom have decided to ditch any half-assed attempts at plot creation and just focused on bringing about the weekly doses of soft-core. Unlike other fanservice shows like R+V that failed to impress me, Kanokon wins because it doesnt try to cloak itself in decency but raises the heat to the maximum level.

Furthermore the stellar cast of seiyuus in this show made it a dream come true for fanservice lovers like yours truly. Mamiko Noto, Kawasumi Ayako and Takeuchi Miyu voicing their respective roles is more or less like sex to my ears, and it nearly was!

Conclusion: watch Kanokon for the fanservice and fanservice alone. Forget about plot, this show is all about the moe moe moe girls and shoutas.

The ED for this episode was really good.

Superb episode, loved every moment of it. The quality of the animation especially the mechas are undoubtedly one of the best of CGs in anime.
Best part of the episode IMO was the part where Alto and Ranka are floating in space, that scene combined the serenity of space and a near death experience surprisingly well.
Also, we are given the reason for Alto's ridiculous good looks in this episode, it is revealed that he is actually the son of a Kabuki theater and thus his good looks and femininity.

The sub i watched this time is by Gattai subs. Though their resolution is higher than AiA subs, I prefer AiA subs because of the subbing of the OP and the ED. Is it really necessary to plaster the names of the staff all over the screen?

This episode of Macross Frontier Featured:

Cadet Pilot Saotome Alto (早乙女アルト)

Designation: Miboshi Academy Cadet Squadron

It was a rather mundane day except for the fact that the Galactic songstress Sheryl was going to give a performance for the colonists of Frontier. Personally did not understand why there was a need for such a concert but the people craved for her and so the flight academy was roped in to provide the opening act of her concert. Well, I could certainly have done with some flight practice but I preferred to stay away from the likes of her. Mikhail was being an ass as usual about my looks. I can’t bloody help it if I was born like so!!!

The preparations went off without a hitch. When I was prepping my self in the woods behind the building after the rest of them left for the stage I ran into a rather interesting girl (or rather she ran into me) she somehow managed to get herself lost, run into a sprinkler and got her clothes wet. After helping her dry her clothes and find her way to the stage I rejoined my wing mates back stage and prepared for the concert. Before she left however she asked me to visit her at the place she works and performed the strangest commercial that I swore I would remember till the day I died.

The concert itself was rather boring, as we weren’t allowed to perform to our fullest potential due to so-called safety regulations. Being the ace that I was I couldn’t bear to be bogged down so I broke formation to perform a move of my own. As luck was to have it, my wingman failed me the songstress fell off the stage but luckily I caught her and we managed to create an improvised performance. I had to admit though her reputation as the Galactic Fairy was not undeserved as she kept a façade of professionalism throughout the performance.

Suddenly, the concert was cut short due to an unexpected turn of events that would forever change my life. First, the concert was cancelled and the songstress left. After I gave her a piece of my mind I took flight and surveyed the surrounding area.It was then I saw a vaguely humanoid shaped weapon wrecking havoc on the city. The local defense force was unable to even put a dentin that monstrosity’s chitinous armor as it shrugged off HEAT shells as though they were but stones. After obliterating the defenders the insect-like weapon turned its attention to me and tried to shoot me out of the sky. By sheer skill and a healthy dose of luck I survived a few hits to my pack and landed thanks to the arrival of a VF-25. Sadly the pilot of the VF-25 that came to my aid fared much worse and was crushed by the weapon as he ejected after being attacked in the blind spot above the fighter.

I then heard a terrified scream from nearby and noticed that the “thing” was turning its attention to a civilian. I recognized her as the girl I met before the concert earlier today. She was too gripped by terror to be able to make a run for it. Unable to bear letting anyone else die I took a gamble and got into the cockpit of the abandoned but still functional VF-25, betting that my flight suit would be able to integrate with the cockpit systems. Fortunately my gambit was successful and I managed to get the VF-25 working and fired off a salvo from its gun pod to distract the alien. I gritted my teeth in preparation of the duel to come.

Thoughts
Well, i thought the episode as a whole was really good. My only complaint is that they cut the dogfighting scene in favour of more Sheryl X Alto. (well, near Yuri is good enough for now) Also, Nyan Nyan song is dangerously addictive.

p.s. reason for this being so late was because i was wondering whether shinsen subs was gaoing to sub it then i got tired of waiting and went for AiA subs.

The episode begins with a short narrative about the situation Japan is in now. The Black Knights have fallen and Japan is now completely under the iron grip of Britannia. Persecution against the Japanese is now harsher than ever, as a last resort the remnants of the Black Knights planned to make contact with Lelouch to restore his memory of being Zero; he currently lives a peaceful life and has absolutely no recollection of his alter ego.

Nippon BANZAIII!!

Lelouch and His younger brother Rollo decide to ditch class in favor of pwning noble Britannians in chess at sleazy parlors and so it was by chance or destiny's mechanisms that he shall meet a hawt bunny girl and sweep her off her feet.

Hot or not? The jury's out on this one.

Suddenly, the Black Knights appeared, seeking the return of their leader, the shit quickly hits the fan with the Brittanian army storming the complex and chaos ensues with people dropping like flies quite literally. I counted at least 50 DBs on screen by the end of the show.

The manner in which Lelouch regains his Geass and past memories is not dissimilar to the method he got his Geass in the 1^st season. C.C. gets shot, his contract gets made, and he orders the Britannian army to perform self-pwnage. It looks like Lelouch’s Geass is still out of control as his eyes were glowing all the time after his Geass was returned to him.

I AM ZERO!!!!

IMPRESSIONS:

I was rather impressed with the quality of animation this time around. It is obvious that the production budget is much higher than the 1^st season. As for the overall story it actually throws up more questions than answers. How did Lelouch get a younger brother? Where is Nunally? These are but a few of the questions that require answers to it.

Also, Suzaku has now lost all credibility as a force for change. Suzaku is now conspiring with the leader of the enemy who invaded his homeland. That’s patriotism for you. I seriously wish Suzaku would die. He has been a hypocrite and an emo one at that since season 1 and his current actions show that he is no longer redeemable and shall burn for betraying his people.

P.S. I watched the RAW so I didn’t get some of the dialogues. orz

This week I managed to redeem a discount voucher from Kinokuniya (it’s their 7^th anniversary), which will grant me a 20% discount if I purchase more than RM300, which is roughly the equivalent of 100 USD. So, I reckoned I should go and pick up a few titles that I have been holding back on. But instead I ended up with a basket full of books and an extraordinarily huge bill of RM600 (roughly 200USD) pre-discount. Thanks to that my reserves are drying up and that means less figures (that’s equivalent exchange for you). T-T

Others: Stalingrad, FMP vol 13., The split of Suzumiya Haruhi(translated from cover).

So far Kinokuniya is still the bookshop of choice for me due to the wide range of books there that easily outclasses all other bookstores in Malaysia especially in the manga, sci-fi and light novels department (light novels are in mandarin though because they are imported from Kadokawa’s Taiwan branch). Too bad there is only one of it in the whole of Malaysia (funny that there are two of them in Singapore though.) and it doesn’t sell Megami or Dengeki Hime. FUCK YOU MORAL FAGS!!!!

Also, due to my huge purchase I ended up getting 2 more of the same discount vouchers. So, I thought I should share it with my fellow comrades through a competition.

Well comrades, It’s spring now, the turning point where everything is given a fresh lease of life and the chance to make amends (looking at you Gonzo). Let’s now put the winter season on the back burner and now focus on the spring season animes. As usual, the spring season is the time of the year when many otakus suffer from anime overload and severe fatigue due to the large number of animes that are being let loose to prey on our souls. To avoid a serious overdose, I’ve trimmed my watchlist this time around and included only works which I will most probably not regret watching later.

Here is the list.

1) Macross Frontier. Though a Macross newbie I could sense that this will definitely be an epic mecha space opera. 1^st episode impressions have been good thus far.

2) Kanokon: For the fanservice and the fox. Also, Mamiko Noto is a seiyuu for this anime.

3) Wagaya no Oinarisama: Yukana is voicing Tenko, the 1000 year old gender bending kitsune.

4) Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion R2: do I even need to elaborate on this?

5) Tower of Druaga: another Gonzo anime. Even though I absolutely detest Gonzo at the moment, I will make an exception because Gatou Shouji (FMP) is writing the screenplay.

6) Toshokan Sensou: considering the fact that I live in a police state where almost all the media is controlled by the state authorities and freedom of speech is restricted this show would be interesting indeed because war over the freedom of information is something deadly serious to me.

Since spring is a season for new beginnings I would also like to announce that I will be trying my hand at episodic anime blogging for the spring season. Most likely to be blogged: Tower of Druaga, Wagaya no Oinarisama, and Code Geass

EDIT: i've decided to review Macross Frontier instead. sorry for my indecisiveness.

P.S. I dropped To-Love-Ru because of fears that it will turn out to be crap like one of my favourite manga which got turned into an anime.

There comes a point in time when one would just feel that the cow has been milked too far and will die horrible, skinny, miserable, malnourished death. lest you have been misguided, Im not talking about Evangelion here with its remakes and numerous movies.(I am still waiting for the release of the Eva 1.0 DVD so i can get subs of it)

I was describing the madness that has been committed by the most certainly warp-touched people of Saitama prefecture in their latest attempt to milk the cash cow that is Lucky Star.

It has been reported that Satte City in Saitama Prefecture decided that the introduction of the Lucky☆Star Sake was not sufficient, so they decided to take it further by introducing Lucky☆Star street lamps. (insert WTFness here)

"100 of the street lamps in Satte City already have Lucky☆Star design acrylic boards mounted onto the panels.

The city intends to install more of these Lucky☆Star design acrylic boards on 530 of the street lamps, so that the entire town becomes one with Lucky☆Star."

Well feth me. It seems that Max Factory is going all out too beat Kaiyodo in the articulated figures market with their latest line up of figmas.

Planned for release in May 2008 are Kyon and Nanoha. Pre-orders starting 28th of march.

I dont think i would be getting Kyon though because of my phobia of male figures. Quite sure that i would be getting Nanoha though. It is also a possibility that we will see a Fate figma later on but that is just speculation at this moment.

Apologies for the lack of posts lately, somehow I failed to bring myself to write anything at all for the past week. But I shall put that to rest with this post.

Yesterday on the 22th of March I attended the ACGC 2008 at Berjaya Times Square, a shopping complex in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. My main objective of the day was to cover the cosplay competition and meeting up with local otakus for the day.

Somehow, as if the wheels of fate conspired to thwart me I ran into a string of problems to reach my destination such as traffic jams etc. To further dampen my mood, the event was more centered on the gaming aspect. Even with advance warnings that gaming was the main event, I could not shake the feeling that the anime part of the event was used to lure otakus into it. To heap more misery on me, I found out that the cosplay competition was actually slated for Sunday, March 23rd. *insert facepalm*

But still I soldiered on and managed to take some rather acceptable photos of cosplayers. The event location was indoors and it played havoc with my camera as the lighting was terrible and my camera’s flash was nowhere near capable enough to provide adequate lighting.

The main highlight of the day for me was meeting up with the local network of otakus. They were a really nice bunch of folks who took a newcomer like me in without hesitation. (Surprisingly enough I remember that one of them actually thought I would be a girl. LOL?) Thanks to all of you for showing me a good time. One of them was actually my senior from college whom I had known all along but never suspected him to be an otaku vice versa. I guess it really is a small world.

And now, I present to you the pics. Please don’t expect too much. Also, I was unable to attend the second day of the event due to personal reasons so I did not cover the cosplay competition.

Third con i attended this year and so far the best one that i have been too. This time the event took place at The Curve Mutiara Damansara, a hip and happening place for mainly youths. This time around, the organizers held the event outdoors which really helped photography as there was copious amounts of natural lighting to go around.

Also, I met fellow comrade e-jump there and had a really nice time hanging out with him. lanie-emon, did you go? didnt see you there.

The event attracted a large number of cosplayers this time around. Most likely because of the loot given out by SONY. Remember folks, larger financial backing = better event. Well, most of the time anyways. Money is still no substitute for RAW passion.

Didn't go around the booths much this time around. Too many cosplayers to steal my attention.

6) Had the support of the Science Fiction community. Great folks they are.

CONS
1) Weather threatened to rain. I think it did some time after i left.
2) I still see Naruto and Bleach cosplayers ......... needs more variety.
3) Still feel its a bit over commercialized.

I am writing this in a hurry so expect incoherent babble ahead.

Today at approximately 12 pm i just had one of the most surreal experiences of my life.

I was busted by my Stats lecturer for web surfing during stats class viewing Dark Mirage's Gundam post. I expected to be lectured(pun intended) but he started discussing about Gunpla with me and we talked about more Gundam 00 and he told me that he owned a few MGs plus a PG Strike and just bought a 1/60 HG Exia.

i guess this would be proof that the otaku culture is a culture for all?

As most of you folks out there would have known by now, there is a massive undertaking at animesuki forums to rewrite Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu where all the characters will be gender swapped.

I have personally joined my comrades in the forum to contribute to this project which i view as a most holy undertaking by fans who love the series.

So, I hereby appeal to all of Haruhi's followers and minions to join in the Great Crusade to make history in the name of The God- Empress and the Holy St. Nagato.

After reading AS's blog ive been inspired yet again to do something out of the norm for me.

Today, ill be exposing you to one of my fanarts. This one was inspired by*ccopied from* Hayate no Gotoku vol.13

The character in question is Haruko. She is the student council's secretary and secretly serves as the Aizawa family maid.

This one was drawn a couple of months ago between classes with a pencil and is my best work to date. Truth be told, i have next to none in artistic talent but i can damn well copy a pic.^^

Red Alert!!!

Truth be told, i haven't been reading my gaming mags such as PCGamer (Us edition) for the past few months. Mainly because of all the coverage given to the FPS(First-Person-Shooter) genre and the lack of RTS(Real-Time-Strategy) game coverage.

This month, however i decided to pick up the mag again because of the coverage of a certain game. (Tips: it involves the colour red.)

Yes my fellow brethen. The classic RTS Red Alert is back in its third incarnation. Promises and hopes of mind control, Tesla weapons, weather machines and brave G.I.s all round.

As good as all of the above sounds however, that is not the real reason for my outpour of joy. In this new chapter of a great saga. The developers have saw fit to include a new faction in the game!! The more the merrier eh??

The new faction included this time around is The Empire Of The Rising Sun. No prizes for guessing which culture it is based on. Be prepared to see loads of ninjas and possibly anime style schoolgirls with weather powers. (I kid not. click the picture above and look closely at the Rising Sun corner.)

Well, after the impressive showing in Command&Conquer 3 i believe EA can do no wrong this time around. Keep ye fingers crossed and ye hopes high for this new installation to the Red Alert saga.

A Childhood Friend: A VN review

This is the first time I’ve played a doujin visual novel and honestly, I didn’t really know what to expect from it. But it my faith in shinji’s work was justified when I played it.

SUMMARY

This is the story of K, a disillusioned otaku salaryman(well sort of) who is tired and fatigued from the daily grinds of life. One day, he wakes up from a dream about his childhood friend, Little Hisa(or as I prefer to call her, Hisa-chan) whom he has not met for nearly a decade.(based on the assumption that he is now a working man)

K then decides to take a couple of days of from work to return to his old hometown to relieve himself of the daily grind of life. When he arrives in his hometown, he notices that much has changed and his old house was no longer where it used to stand. K then decides to go to a local café and get a drink where he meets a mysterious girl whom he feels a connection with. After a brief conversation they promised to meet each other in the same place again the next day, After awhile, Hisa-chan in her loli form came into the café and began to talk to K in earnest about life and how people are too preoccupied and fail to appreciate the simple things in life. Hisa-chan then disappears after walking out of the café.

The next day, the girl whom K made the promise with did not turn up and it was beginning to rain so he decided run through it and fell face first when he hit a trashcan. The girl then appeared and helped him to a nearby bus station. K was clearly in awe of the girl but somehow he could not string together a coherent conversation with her and ended up making himself look even weirder. Finally K manages to get the girl’s name before she departs to the next city. Her name was Hisa.

A grown up Hisa-chan is fine too.

Back from his refreshing trip, K gets ready for his daily commute to work but on trai station platform he saw Hisa on the opposite platform when a train sped by and all he could see was his own reflection.

It seemed endless.

IMPRESSIONS

First off, congrats to shinji and his team for even managing to complete this VN. (This is still in beta phase I presume?)

The story in itself is rather simple, boy thinks of girl, boy goes back to find girl and boy meets girl again and falls in love. It kind of reminds me of Kanon where Yuuichi has ties to Ayu through a shared memory. I personally think the story could use some extra details such as why was K forced to leave the city 10 years ago? It also seemed too short for a full novel.

Character wise, this story’s main characters are rather interesting. K is portrayed quite well as the world-weary otaku salary man. He even throws a few otaku references. (Watch out for it, really had me LOLed) Hisa in loli form was also quite interesting as I take that she is K’s inner conscience and innocence. The adult Hisa on the other hand projects the perfect image of a woman of Mystery, never giving up information unless asked to do so.

A few suggestions I might like to add though is to extend the story and add in an arc for when they meet in the city again as adults and add in some romance ala Hachikuro and I think you will have a recipe for pure win.

Just a short pic post about my Wonfest 2008 wishlist. Currently mustering the financial power to make most of it come true. ie, asking for allowance raises, working part time(possibly), scrooging, skipping meals, etc.

I think ill focus more on the Figmas and Revoltechs. Master Chief is way too expensive and Erika is a limited Edition piece. T-T
