It's the return of "Fridays with Full Radius Dance"! Come join us on Fridays during the month of February for physically integrated dance technique, partner stretching, contact improvisation and choreography.

Open to adults with or without physical disabilities and using any mobility aid or none at all. No experience required, but an adventurous spirit is helpful. Pay what you can.

Classes run from 10 AM to 12 Noon on February 3, 10, 17 and 24. Wear comfortable clothing which allows for freedom of movement.

The Final Countdown

For the past several days, I've had the song "The Final Countdown", released in 1986 by the band Europe, stuck in my head. But not the whole song, just the lyric "it's the final countdown" with the accompanying keyboard riff. Appropriate enough, as Full Radius Dance is now a week away from presenting our 20th anniversary concert. 20 years. Have I really been on this journey for two decades?

It all started with "Beginnings: A Dance Premiere" on June 22, 1991. Back then, the company was known as Dance Force. The original company was Berneta Bock, Cherie Carson, Jim Chappeleaux, Deirdre Driscoll, Kelly Oakes-Dent and, myself, Douglas Scott.

And now I offer "The Path Beyond" on January 20 & 21, 2012. Dance Force evolved into Full Radius Dance and "The Path Beyond" features Lindy Dannelley, Marshall Hamilton, Julie Holcomb, Samir Jusupovic, Laurel Lawson, Takiyah Sermons and Onur Topal-Sumer. Oh, and I'm still Artistic Director!

Older and Faster

I recently remarked to a friend that I couldn't believe that 2012 was just around the corner and that the older I got, the faster time passed. And it made me wonder, why? So I did some research and here's what I discovered through NPR's All Things Considered:

Neuroscientist David Eagleman says that when you experience a "first", such as a first kiss, an early birthday or summer vacation, they seem to be in slow motion. That's because, as a first, there are so many things to remember. "The list of encoded memories is so dense, reading them back gives you a feeling that they must have taken forever. But that's an illusion."

"Of course, you can see this in everyday life," says Eagleman, "when you drive to your new workplace for the first time and it seems to take a really long time to get there. But when you drive back and forth to your work every day after that, it takes no time at all, because you're not really writing it down anymore." He reports that this "may be because the brain records new experiences — especially novel and exciting experiences — differently." Eagleman's lab has found that brains use more energy to represent a memory when the memory is novel."

Aha! You can slow down time by having 'novel and exciting experiences'. I'm all for that, both personally and artistically. Here's hoping that 2012 is full of such opportunities and events.

Dance, By Chance

Two seemingly unconnected inspirations are informing a new Full Radius Dance work: 1) My love of thrift store shopping and 2) The company of Merce Cunningham, the iconic avant-garde choreographer who passed away in 2009, will disband following its final performance on December 31, 2011. So what's the connection? Chance.

I never know what I'll stumble across at my local Value Village or Goodwill. I take a chance whenever I visit that I'll find a bargain that interests me and that I can't live without.

Merce Cunningham introduced chance operations in dance creation and made indeterminacy an important compositional device. For instance, he would roll a die to reorder dance phrases, discovering endless variations for a finite number of movements.

The roll of a die is a new way of working for me as a choreographer. It is hard for me to give up control in the structuring of the dance and let the die tell Onur to start with phrase one but Laurel has to start with phrase 2, etc. But I'm finding new connections and interactions through this method, ones I wouldn't have found otherwise.

The Evolution of the Dance

We've continued to work on the phrase I, along with dancers' input, created in a rehearsal on Monday, August 15. (Please check out the previous blog posting.) The phrase continues to be refined, to grow in meaning, and to expand in length.

After watching Monday's video - which I watched it too many times to count - I took the basic footprint of the movement phrase, and manipulated it to add more substance. I'm still mulling the results. Does it say/communicate what I want it to say?

While creating the newer version of the phrase, I was also working on the "Fridays with Full Radius Dance" class. I couldn't remember a CD I used for a stretching combination a number of years ago, so I pulled out an old notebook. I found the name of the CD and unexpectedly, found something more - a few lines of poetry that I had carefully tucked away, saving for a future purpose, words that were perfect for the current creative situation:

I divided the lines amongst the two couples, and asked them to create movement informed by the words. The results were inspired. Here are Onur & Samir, Laurel and Marshall in the third rehearsal for "The Path Beyond", section two:

The Return to Rehearsal

After the June residencies/performances in Tucson, AZ and Tampa, FL, Full Radius Dance took a well-deserved rest during the month of July. We returned to the studio this past Monday, August the 15th, to begin preparing for the new season, which runs from September through June.

This was my 'play day' for the final section of 'The Path Beyond'. 'Play day' is when I bring the nucleus of the idea into the studio and my wonderful dancers allow me to see the idea translated into movement. It serves to clarify my vision before we launch into the setting of the choreography.

In this case, I began with simple, mirroring port de bras (use of the arms). I liked it, but felt it needed to be richer. The dancers willingly took on the challenge to do the same movement, but with a turn. Then Paulo added an additional arm, and I said "keep it!" Karin took the final movement into an over tilt, pulling over her footplate and front casters, which then Laurel and Samir translated into their duet.

Can I just say I love my dancers?

Auditions - August 12, 2011

Full Radius Dance seeks dancers with and without physical disabilities to join the professional dance company.

For dancers with disabilities, no previous dance experience is necessary. Successful applicants will demonstrate good body awareness and, if used, chair control. Persons without disabilities must exhibit a professional level of modern dance technique.

Members of Full Radius Dance receive payment for both rehearsal and performance. Company members rehearse MWF from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Auditions will be held at the Atlanta Ballet Cobb Studios, and will begin at 12:00 Noon.

Better Late Than Never

I had planned on blogging during the experience in Tucson, and later, in Tampa. As you know, if you follow this blog, this didn't happen. I had good intentions. In the hotel room, after a day of workshops at Arts for All in Tucson, I sat down to write, but couldn't remember my password. I took it as a sign that blogging could wait until I had time to process the experience. (It certainly couldn't be a sign of failing memory!) So it is now two weeks plus a few days later, and I am back home in Atlanta after the week of June 6 - June 11 in Arizona and June 13 - June 15 at the Florida Dance Festival.

I have a couple of standout memories from each location. In Arizona:

Early in the week, I didn't feel that one of the dance workshops went very well. The group was larger than I expected and I didn't get a good 'feel' for the energy in the room. However, a Arts for All staff member was watching this class, and later raved about it. She commented specifically about one of the students (a student with autism) who usually does not participate or interact. She thought it remarkable that this individual was a full and active participant in the dance class.

We led a workshop open to the Tucson community on Saturday, and had over twenty folks show up. The session absolutely flew by, and the participants were reluctant to leave. Amazing how these dancers -- many of them strangers to one another -- came with open minds and hearts and a willingness to learn and experience. Wonderful!

Kudos to Karin, Onur, Samir and Marshall for their great work during the week, both in the classroom and onstage.

In Tampa:

Two television interviews and three print interviews! I felt like a celebrity. It is nice to be appreciated!

Speaking of appreciation, Karin, Paulo, Vincent and Masha gave a stunning performance of section one of "The Path Beyond".

So, what is next for Full Radius Dance? For starters, the 2011/2012 season is the 20th anniversary of the founding of the precursor to Full Radius Dance, Dance Force! Stay tuned for news!

Hi Ho, Hi Ho . . .

It is off to rehearsal I go. And then in two weeks, off to Tucson followed by off to Tampa.

Remember the quandary I had with naming the new dance piece Full Radius Dance premiered at the Modern Atlanta Dance Festival? And how I finally settled on "The Path"? Well, turns out I wasn't through yet. I've slightly re-named it to "The Path Beyond", as I feel it is a clearer description of the dance's theme. (So what's the theme? Review our previous blog postings, if interested.)

Today, I'll finish a new section of "The Path Beyond", which will be performed in Tucson following our week-long residency at Arts for All. It was also be seen at the Florida Dance Festival as part of a oddly titled 'Disability Dance' concert. (I'm sure I'll have many interesting conversations about verbiage while in Tampa). In addition to the performance, I'll be teaching daily classes in physically integrated technique and a choreography workshop. Students from the choreography workshop will perform at the Festival's closing night concert.

Big Dreams

Before I get to what's on my mind this evening, I want to remind everyone that Full Radius Dance is appearing at the Inman Park Dance Festival on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1. Performances begin at 4pm each day. Also appearing are Ballethnic, Callanwolde Dance Ensemble and DENSE.

And now . . .

Big Dreams. I have them for Full Radius Dance. Too often, I have the dream and the reality of finances, personnel, space, etc., toss up a roadblock.

Roadblocks remind me of a popular school show Full Radius Dance did a number of years ago in which we talked about obstacles. In one narrative section, I talked about walking to Grandmother's house (depending on the school it was 'MeeMaw', 'Granny' or 'Grandma) and finding that a tree had fallen and blocked the path. I'd go down the line of dancers who were doing their best fallen tree impressions.

"I could turn around and go home, but I really want to see Grandma! Maybe I can climb over the tree," and I would hop over Laurel, "or maybe I can go under the tree", and I'd crawl under Nicola. "If that doesn't work, I'll try going around the tree," and I'd slip around Teal, "or I can take out my axe and chop through the tree" and I'd mime chopping Jojo in half.

I need to heed the advice we gave those hundreds of students! Gotta keep dreaming those big dreams for the company - dreams of the pieces we want to create, the people we want to reach, the places we want to go, and the legacy we want to leave. And finding a way over, under, around or through the roadblocks.

Full Radius Dance can't do it alone. We need you. Together, let's brainstorm and make concrete plans for implementation.

The "Baby" Has a Name!

With less than one week until performance, I've finally settled on a title for my new work that the wonderful dancers of Full Radius Dance will premiere at the Modern Atlanta Dance Festival: "The Path". It may not be a poetic title like Stephen Petronio's I Drink the Air Before Me nor one intriguingly punctuated like Bill T. Jone's Still/Here, but it fits the work. To me, "The Path" speaks of a journey -- where does the path start, where does it lead, and where is the end? And even before starting on that journey, how does one find or select their path? I hope you'll experience "The Path" firsthand by attending the Modern Atlanta Dance Festival this Saturday, April 16 at the Marcus Jewish Community Center Atlanta with shows at 7:00pm and 9:00pm. Musings on Dance and Disability

I've been reading the essays contained in 'Bodies in Commotion: Disability & Performance", edited by Carrie Sandahl and Phillip Auslander. It has inspired me to think of the work of Full Radius Dance in a broader perspective. My mind is now a swirl of concepts, ideas and opinions. Here are a few quotes that I'm mulling:

'In any performance medium, when disabled artists create work beyond the traditional roles provided for them, they necessarily challenge rigid aesthethic conventions.' Carrie Sandahl and Phillip Auslander.

'Similary, to think of disability not as a physical condition but as a way of interacting with the world that is frequently inhospitable is to think of disability in performative terms - as something one does rather than something one is. ' Carrie Sandhal and Phillip Auslander.

'These artists see beyond bodily impairment (as something that can, or needs to be cured), to disability as culture, as identity.' Johnson Cheu.

So, what has all this thinking revealed to me? I'm not sure. I'm entangled in the concept of being a choreographer without a disability working with a company comprised of dancers with and without disabilities. How does each inform the other? What is the significance of this mix?

Ultimately, it is about the art. That is the bottom line. But societal and cultural norms make that bottom line incredibly complex and difficult to describe.

As I continue to address these concerns, for myself, I know I can rely on wonderful Full Radius Dance board members such as Rosemarie Garland-Thompson and Bethany Stevens to help me, and the company, create an invigorating dialogue.

The Saga of the Untitled Work

Okay. So it has been almost two weeks since my last post in which I described my search for the title of Full Radius Dance's latest dance work. Unfortunately, nothing new to report on that front. I'm still on that quest.

For a bit, I was seriously considering copying American painter James Whistler, who gave his work titles such as "Arrangement in Gray" and "Symphony in White". Then I realized I'd have to decide on the colors that will be found in the costuming. Deciding on how to clothe the dancers for this work has been another struggle. Sometimes the complete vision of the work is revealed to me at once; at other times, things are divulged little by little, as if the Muses are sharing a reluctant secret.

This untitled dance really started to coalesce in today's rehearsal and I felt that welcomed, familar excitment well up inside me because I actually like what I've created. (I, as well as numerous other artists, have such a love/hate relationship with my work, but I'll leave that discussion for another time.)

Please plan on attending the Modern Atlanta Dance Festival on Saturday, April 16. And cross your fingers that the dance will have a title and the dancers will be costumed.

The Title Search

I'm struggling with my new dance work. Not with the music, which I found the components of over a year ago and to which I recently did a killer edit. And not so much with the movement, which crystallizes further with each rehearsal. My challenge is in deciding on what to call this new dance work - in giving my creation a name.

I started off calling it "Surviving Survival" after its inspiration, a broadcast on Public Radio International of the program "Sound & Spirit" with Ellen Kushner. This episode was called "Surviving Survival" and Ms. Kushner's intro include the following:

" . . . how do you survive your own survival? Because it's a blessing to live through something, to escape the body's or the spirit's destruction. But what about those you left behind - the ones who didn't make it?"

The program then delves into survivors of the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia, surviving the mean streets of South Central Los Angeles, etc. I was particularly struck by the segment on J.S. Bach's 'Morimur' which contains musical references to beloved choral works about the resurrection. Some scholars also believe that Bach encoded the name of his late wife, Maria Barbara, within 'Morimur's' Ciaccona.

But the more I called the work "Surviving Survival" the more I feared that audience members might be drawn into "ableism". (If this term is new to you, here's a quick definition, borrowed from Wikipedia: ableism reflects "a view that the able-bodied are the norm in society, and that people with disabilities must strive to become that norm.") This new dance work is definitely not about my dancers 'surviving' their disabilities. So that title got tossed.

I then settled on the lengthier "A Matter of Space Between Two Points", drawn from one of the interviews contained within "Sound & Spirit". I was relatively happy with that until I realized it was uncomfortably close to CORE Performance Company's new work "The Point". Since these works will be sharing a program at the upcoming Modern Atlanta Dance Festival, out went that title as well.

So I'm back to having an 'untitled work'. I'm seriously considering posting excerpts on our website and YouTube and seeking suggestions. Hmm. I wonder what's the last possible minute I can delay the printing of the MAD Festival program?

Full Radius Dance at Sweet Apple

We performed two shows, bright and early, at Sweet Apple Elementary yesterday (Monday) as the kick-off to "Exceptional Children's Week". The school really enjoyed us and offered us many positive comments.

Eight dancers underscored, through our performance, that different is not good or bad, that different is just different. The show begins with the dancers in a straight line, moving in response to a set of questions - "If you were born in the USA, move forward" or "If you've gone swimming in the Black Sea, front and center". At the end, the dancers then respond to a set of questions to which everyone can say 'yes': being a good friend, driving a car, and loving to dance.

This is followed by two more dances, one highlight our innovative partnering work, and the second showcasing how we translate movement from two seated dancers to two standing dancers to a seated and standing dancer and, finally, converting the duet into a trio.

Midway through the performance is the audience participation section. We ask students from each grade to select one way everyone is the same, and one way the individual student is different. The difference is usually something they feel they are good at doing such as a particular sport, school subject, etc. This is then translated into movement and performed, with the help of Full Radius Dance, by the entire grade. For instance, Sweet Apple fourth graders performed a dolphin move in response to the answer "I like dolphins".

The show wraps up with an ensemble dance, which is a restaged excerpt from one of our concert dance works, with age appropriate music added. (Somehow, I don't think a piece from "Bar Song" would go over too well with the faculty and administration.)

Snow Day!

A snow day means no rehearsal for Full Radius Dance. Strangely, I'm not in a panic, even with "Walking On My Grave and Other Dances" in less than two weeks. I left Friday's rehearsal feeling like we were in really good shape (no pun intended). And we are. I'm eager to see the dances onstage with the added layers of costuming, lighting, and audience. And I know my dedicated company members will put forth even more effort at the next rehearsal, making up for today's missed rehearsal.

Great Rehearsal!

Today was our last rehearsal prior to a short Thanksgiving break. (We'll be back at it next Monday!). Paulo led off working on several movement phrases from his brand spankin' new work "Pedro & Inez".

Next, we worked on two partnering sections found within "Bar Songs". It was a great way to begin to introduce Full Radius Dance's intricate physically integrated partnering techniques to new company members Na Young "Sophia" Yoon, Samir Jusupovic and Marshall Hamilton. (That's Jojo upside down on Samir in the photo.)

Both "Pedro & Inez" and "Bar Songs", along with "Walking on My Grave" will premiere on January 21 & 22, 2011 at our concert at 7 Stages Theatre in Atlanta.

For the right candidates, there is a very strong chance that these positions will become paid (rehearsal and performance) company members. Dancers with disabilities must have good body awareness and, if used, good wheelchair control skills. Dancers without disabilities must possess a professional level of modern or ballet technique. Integrated Dance Seattle Intensive

We're home from Seattle (okay, Douglas is home from Seattle; Laurel's in San Francisco, and Paulo's off again teaching in Japan). We had a great time at the intensive, organized andled by Jurg Koch, formerly of CanDoCo in London and now a faculty member at the University ofWashington (that's him in the bright red shirt and bright white smile--he's very sunny, just like Seattle in the summer. We thought we would get to be cold for a few days).

Workshop participants were evenly mixed between professional and amateur dancers, with backgrounds ranging from modern to ballet to ballroom. We made new friends with directors and choreographers from the US, Canada, and Europe, many from relatively new integrated dance companies.

It was a treat to get to work with Charlene Curtiss and Joanne

(Jo and Paulo seemed to have managed

to stay out of the official photos. And no, I couldn't

get through the week without falling on the floor--but that time was on purpose, honest).

It was also great to meet and work with a variety

of new dancers and independent artists with

disabilities (Ania and Yulia, right, of CA and OR

respectively). I'm leaving people out, of course--mostly because they managed not to be photographed, and also because I'm saving things for future posts...

More later on what we actually got up to, other new friends, and the artists' roundtable discussion following the intensive.

Sessions begin promptly at 10:00 AM and will continue until 12 Noon. This includes a short break. Please come early in order to be fully prepared prior to the starting time.

Open to adults and teens (14 +) with and without physical disabilities. No experience necessary.

Attire: Comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement.

Held at the Atlanta Ballet Cobb Studios, 2000 Powers Ferry Road, G-4, Marietta, GA 30067. (The intersection of Windy Hill Road and Powers Ferry Road.)
