Polyvinyl chloride, also known as vinyl, is a toxic plastic that appears in almost everything you have in your home – toys, food and drink containers, building and flooring materials – almost everywhere you look, you’ll find vinyl. PVC contains Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), toxic molecular substances that are leached into the human body. According to Michael Schade of the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice, “One new vinyl shower curtain can release up to 108 chemicals over a 28-day period.”
From production to incineration, PVC emits chemicals like mercury, lead, cadmium, and dioxin that have been linked to birth defects, autism and cancer. These chemicals have been deadly to laborers who participate in production and have forced entire communities to uproot in order to escape contamination.

Identifying PVC is the first step in avoiding PVC. The Campaign for Safe Healthy Consumer Products created a motto to help: “Bad News Comes in 3s”, a reference to the number 3 recycling symbol that is located on many PVC products. Look for the letters PVC if you weren’t already.

Here are several of the items and places where PVC is most common:

Packaging - Most plastic packaging is made of PVC as well as unlabeled plastic and blister packages for pills. They are used to store olive oil, body washes and shampoos which come into direct contact with the skin.

Bedrooms and Living Rooms - Vinyl flooring is riddled with PVC and outgases chemicals fairly frequently. Even some carpet padding contains PVC. Some safe options for flooring include linoleum, bamboo, cork and ceramic. Vinyl window blinds give off VOCs as well as plastic, imitation leather and inflatable furniture. Always look for mattresses covered in cotton or wool.

Bathrooms – Shower Curtains and bath toys like rubber duckies can be made entirely from PVC. Children tend to chew on these toys where the chemicals bleed out.

Kitchens – Your dinner table is the last place you’d like to find toxic chemicals. Tablecloths, bibs and aprons made of plastic can contain PVC, as well as dishes and cutlery. Cotton Production has a devastating effect on soil and crop production. Cotton plants have shallow root systems; they soak up nutrients that are essential to life and erode topsoil from the landscape. Because of the hemp plants' deep root system, topsoil is held in place and even replaces lost nutrients. Before hemp prohibition, farmers would leave fields fallow for a year and plant hemp to repair degraded soil, improving it for further crop production.
