Tips for Keeping Your Fullamoon Designs Jewelry Looking Like New!

The best way to keep your jewelry tarnish-free is to limit exposure to moisture. Store your pieces in a pouch or jewelry drawer. Storing tarnish strips in the drawer will reduce moisture and help prevent discoloration.

I clean my pieces with a quick wipe down using a silver tarnish cloth. Cloths are readily available at WalMart, Target, KMart, etc. They are inexpensive and easy to use!

Do not swim or bathe wearing your jewelry, and remove before strenuous exercise, as sweat may dull the appearance of the surface. Try not to get sunscreen or lotion on the metal as well.

To clean the glass, I dip a Q-tip in nail polish remover and very lightly rub the surface of the glass. DO NOT soak the piece or immerse in polish remover, as this will destroy the design painted behind the glass!

My name is Laurie, and I live in the far Northeast corner of Massachusetts. On weekdays I am an office worker, but on the weekend I dive into creating these fantastic one-of-a-kind works of art that you can wear!

Fullamoon Designs all began one Saturday morning, sitting in my hairdresser's chair waiting for my color to develop while reading a decorating magazine. There was a craft article about water marbling fabric. Now I had been searching for years (yes, years - I am not exaggerating!) for the perfect accent pillows for my living room, and just couldn't find the right style, fabric or colors. I'd rather have no pillows at all than throw my money at something I didn't really love looking at. Anyway, when I found this article about marbling fabric, I thought, "Eureka! I'll make my own!" I bought everything I needed including the Carrageen, Methocel, ammonia, paint and canvas fabric. I researched online some more about setting up the process of marbling the fabric and kept running into water marble nail videos. If you haven't seen one yet, just go to YouTube and search "water marble nails". You're in for a treat!

I found myself even more intrigued by the nail enamel marbling than I was for the fabric marbling, and tried the technique on tiles for coasters, planter pots, small gift boxes and even glass magnets. The magnets were a hit, and my husband suggested I make something that I could wear. He held a magnet up to my neck and said "Like that. You should make something you can actually wear."

Once I started making them, I was hooked! It is such a creative outlet for me. It was getting out of hand when I had accumulated more than 100 pieces of jewelry. I gave it away, I blogged about it, I sold some at local craft shows. Who'd have thought I'd be opening an online shop?

So that's my "How I Got Into This" story. Now here are some fun personal facts about myself, if you're interested:

1. I like to play the keyboard. Although I think I'm pretty good, I cannot play in front of people other than my two boys (17 and 21) and my husband.

2. I can make soap from scratch.

3. "Fullamoon" is a nickname my Papa Vespa called me as a chubby little girl. Now say it with a thick, Italian accent FULLaMOON and you've got it!

4. I'm in an arranged marriage. Well, not really. But our moms did introduce us. And thank God they did! We've been happily married for 26 years. I am C-R-A-Z-Y about my husband! He's a cute one, too. You can probably find him in my Facebook profile pic. Go ahead. I'll wait. I don't mind.

5. I live very close to the beach, but I hate going there. Yes, I really do. I get sticky, sandy, windblown, chewed by sand fleas and the water is freezing! The only condition I will agree to go is if it's after supper so I don't get sunburned, the tide is low so the seashells are visible and there is at least one tide pool to wade through. If the sun, moon and all the planets are in alignment, like maybe once a year, I'll go. But that's it.

6. I can juggle. Yes I know all moms juggle things - work, kids, relationships - but I mean balls. Or apples. Or oranges. But not eggs. Because I'm allergic to eggs.

7. I love to decorate. It takes me a while to get it right but I love the whole process. I've been decorating this house for 8 years now. I've only made a small dent, but it's fun.

8. I'm a night owl. Who-o-o, who-o-o! During the week I try to get my rest, though, because I work in a print shop by day.

9. I am a Maxxonista. I love shopping for clothes at T. J. Maxx.

10. That Carrageen, Methocel, ammonia, paint and fabric? It's still in the box. And I still don't have pillows!

Aquadelic Mommy Pots

Aren't these the sweetest? I remember when the kids were little they'd bring buttercups and dandelions to me. There wasn't a vase small enough to hold them up! I wish I thought to make some of these back then. Up-cycled from empty nail polish bottles, I water marbled the outside and put some cork on the bottom to protect furniture. Now, who's going to bring me some flowers?

Christmas Water Marbled Designs by Fullamoon Designs

I am gearing up for my Christmas shows this Fall, and though it's warm and muggy out, Christmas colors are dominating my designs!

Tadaa! Here are my Christmas pieces.

What's that? Orange, pink, blue and yellow aren't Christmas colors? Well, sure they are!

Each piece begins with at least three colors. I swirled black, sparkly green and a nice shade of red together. When the red hits the water it spreads out and becomes more of a pink. The more paint I use, the darker the colors become.

Here's one just after it's water dip.

If I painted plain white on the back after the water dip, the red would remain a pinkish color. I could paint it a nice solid red but that would be boring don't you think? I chose neon yellow for kicks. I think it will make the green pop and bring that pinkish red to life.

Now here's what the front looks like after it dried. WOWZA! Don't you think?

Let's do another one. I water dipped the same exact colors but this time applied hot pink to the back.

Whoa! I'm loving these combinations.

I can't wait to turn these into rings, earrings, necklaces and pins!

How on Earth do I make these?

It's a question I'm asked over and over again at shows. How do I make these?

My process is fun and messy. But mostly fun. No, I take that back. It's mostly messy.

First I decide on some color combinations to work with. I find inspiration in the garden, in my wardrobe, in magazines or just plain in my mind. I have water-marbled dreams. Really I do! And I think up some very incredible color combinations. Who would ever think to pair orange and purple with neon yellow? And yet - just look how stunning they come out!

Next, I pick my polish. What kind of finish do I want? Flat? Glossy? Metallic?

I drip some drops in a bowl of water, swirl 'til my heart's content, then dip the glass into the paint.

The first pic above shows how they look during the middle stage. Once these have dried, I choose yet another color to hand- paint the back. If I choose white, the colors really pop! If I choose black, they turn to a sophisticated, moody piece. And all the colors in-between will totally change the look of the final cabochon. Sometimes only a bright neon will do!

I hand make my curly bails out of colored wire, choose a cord color, slide the pendant on, and Voila!

I am having a ball both creating and selling my water marbled artwork.

I was accepted into my first juried craft show on May 2nd and did very well at the Seacoast Artisans Spring Fine Arts & Crafts Show. The Frank Jones Center was a beautiful facility to exhibit at, and I will be returning for their November 7th Show in the Fall.

On Saturday, June 27th, I will be exhibiting some of my work at the new Haverhill Art Market at 90 Washington Street in Haverhill, MA 12noon - 4pm. Some of the areas finest artists will also be there, including the show coordinators, Gerrie Maffris (www.gerriemaffris.com) and Justin Gordon (www.ElwinDesigns.com). I am so excited and very honored to have been selected to participate in one of their Saturday shows.

DIY Craft Show Display Shelves Using Foam Board

I have a craft fair coming up and was panicked I didn't have any shelving units to add some height to my table. I searched and searched online for an affordable unit or a template to make one myself. I found nothing of the sort, and to purchase one is not in the cards for me right now.

I needed something lightweight, easily transportable and quick to erect and dismantle.

I found a photo online of a plexiglass unit that I used for my inspiration and designed one myself! I am pleased with the result, and I will share it with you!

I wanted my shelves to be about 6" deep with at least 3" between them vertically. I created this mini version to make sure it worked (1" = 6"). It took a couple of tries, but I got it just right. It measures 12" tall and is 18" deep - perfect for a craft fair table! I may make one for each side of the table.

For this unit I could have used white foam board but chose black instead. I found 22" x 28" foam board in the stationery department at KMart for about $3.00 each. One unit uses 2 sheets.

You will need:

2 sheets of 22" x 28" foam board

Sharp Exacto knife

Long, sharp scissors (for cleaning up edges)

Yardstick/Ruler

Pencil

Cardboard to protect surface under foam board while you cut

Patience

Here's the template I made:

Even though my Exacto knife had a new, sharp blade, I still had a difficult time with it. Towards the end of my project I discovered if I sawed up and down as I followed the line, the foam board was less likely to tear - a shame really to have struggled through almost to the end. My second one will go much smoother and not have such jagged edges. I will probably hit the edges with some black paint or "something" to smooth out the edges. Perhaps some black duct tape? We'll see.

You want to make sure your slots are the same width as the thickness of your foam board. This looks messy, but it's not visible once the shelf is in place.

All my pieces are cut out (and cleaned up around the edges with my scissors as best I could). Time to piece it together! Very gently wiggle the pieces together until they are all snug and in place. You should not have to jam them in place, but there should be a little bit of resistance between the pieces so it holds together firmly with no wiggles.

I am so excited to try my new displays out. They only cost me about $12.00 and a few hours of my time. They are lightweight, portable and lay flat when not in use.

Water Marbled Jellyfish Pendants! by Fullamoon Designs

These graceful animals of the sea have landed upon the jetty in Newburyport after a powerful February Nor’easter. I swirled the polish in the salty waves, and when the jellyfish appeared I captured them under glass. Don’t mind the sea urchin – he’s just hanging out with the jellies!

Just look at all these lovelies I've painted today! I am excited to see how they all turn out.

The next step is to choose a color for the back. I take my time with this step because it can make or break my design on the front. White really makes the colors pop, but black gives a moody, sophisticated look. I've even experimented with neon colors, which are fun because they morph the colors already on the glass and transform them to fun, psychedelic pieces to wear. They even glow under a black light!

So, what color would YOU choose for my jellyfish?

Day 2, and here they are with painted backs and bails applied. Now just the finishing touch-ups and cords are all that's needed.

Handpainted Water Marbled Jewelry by Fullamoon Designs

I have been up to so much and have lots to share. Over the past few months I've been perfecting my technique of water marbling glass cabochons and creating the most interesting pieces!

I opened a shop on Etsy and also created a Facebook page. I was graciously invited by my hairdresser to share her booth space at a local craft fair and to display some of my work in her salon!

I have learned to create my own bails out of wire as shown in this pic:

I received my first request to make a set of matching earrings and necklace for a special occassion! Don't you just love how they came out?

I am having fun creating all of these pieces. It's the perfect outlet for my creativity after a long week at work, and making a little "dough"-re-mi on the side is a rush! My next move is to step out of my comfort zone and approach some artsy store owners to carry my jewelry.

Wire Wrapped Cabochon Glass Necklace Pendant

I am doing my best to come up wth a wiring technique that works for me. This was a difficult one and I think I got a little carried away with the curly wire, but I like it just the same. I made it for my sister. I hope she loves it.

This wire is from a local craft store. It is 20 gauge gun metal color and is easy to twist and work with. It comes in many colors that I'm excited to try. However, I have read online reviews that say the colored wires peel. That makes sense considering all the bending and twisting, especially for a newbie. When I try it out it will have to be on very simple, straight-forward designs. I have noticed myself that this wire mars easily. I wonder if 16 gauge wire would be better.

This design is a combination of tutorials I found on YouTube and my own silly idea of wrapping the extra wire ends around a screwdriver. I don't have all the right tools yet, but it certainly makes the job easier when you do use the right tools. I get a little more each time I shop, and my designs become a little more refined.

Pendant Necklace Using Water Marble Technique

Oh the possibilities are endless! I am having so much fun making my swirly creations. I've made magnets, planters, barrettes, coasters, and now I am beginning to make jewelry. How wonderful to have just the right piece for each workday outfit! I made my own bails out of wire for these pretties. But I also purchased some blanks to glue cabochons into. They just came in today's mail so I will be posting more pics soon!

I've Opened a Shop on Etsy!

Surprise! It's NOT Soap!

I have been wracking my brain for months trying to come up with a creative outlet. I need to create. I need to make cool things. But soaping was expensive, took up a lot of space in my kitchen and I just no longer have the time or energy to suit up, mix, measure, swirl, pour and wait for soap to cure. I still love my homemade soaps and will make them for special occasions, but for now I will try dumping some soapy supplies on eBay and begin exploring other creative outlets to share with you.

So...if the photo at the top of this post is not soap, then what is it? It's marbleized coasters!

I have had an obsession with marbleizing my nails since last summer. The tutorials on YouTube are mesmerizing. And there's no wrong way to do it, which is a beautiful thing! I decided to try the application on something else. Voila!

I filled a square plastic container with water and plopped droplets of nail polish on the surface, swirled it a bit, dipped the tiles in upside down and ended up with the most beautiful designs! After they dried, I sprayed on high gloss acrylic sealer. Now I just have to glue some cork on the bottom and I'm done.

Psychedelic Magnets for Refrigerator

Here are some psychedelic water marbled magnets I made using the same technique as the coasters. They are so much fun to make, and the results are unexpected! The designs change dramatically depending on what color you coat the back with. Some of these are white on back, and some of them are black, but you could paint any color. You can make them in fun primary colors or really rich, sophisticated decorator colors. I love using a bit of metallic nail polish to make them pop. Hmm...I might have to start making jewelry like this!

I am hoping to sell some on eBay. I've given some away, and the recipients are delighted! What a beautiful hostess gift. Or for a student with a locker. Or for work, a stocking stuffer, Easter basket, grab bag gift, etc.

Water Marbled Planters - Hello, Spring!

Using the very same technique as water marbling magnets or tiles for coasters, I decided to try my hand at marbling other items like these plain, ceramic bowls I found at the Salvation Army yesterday. They are nice and thick, and I thought they'd make cool planters out on my back porch. They are addictingly FUN to make, so I think my porch will be full of them by Summertime!

After marbleing, I sprayed a couple of thin coats of clear gloss enamel.

Now when I go treasure hunting at flea markets and yard sales, I will be looking for other things to marble! I'd like to find a ceramic trinket box with a lid next. Wouldn't that be neat?

Cold Process White Tea & Ginger Swirl Soap

I wish I had filled just one mold with all of the batter because these bars came out pretty thin. I can tell they are going to be nice, hard bars of soap, though. I used Bramble Berry's Ultramarine Blue and Liquid Orange for the swirls, although the orange swirls look more red to me. Funny, because when I try to make a red soap using Liquid Red it comes out pink! I just used 1/2 of a Capri Sun box for my molds.

Christmas Holiday Soaps

I'm finally soaping again. It was a long, hot summer and I just couldn't bear the thought of suiting up with gloves, long sleeves and goggles in the heat. Here are the first two I've made, which should be fully cured by Christmas!

Cranberry Fig:

Almond Biscotti:

I lightly dusted the top of the cranberry fig with copper mica powder and the top of the almond biscotti with gold mica powder. The almond biscotti fragrance (from Bramble Berry) really turned the color of the soap a yellow, which I don't mind. I was expecting off-white and then for it to turn to light brown color because of the vanilla in the fragrance. I used vanilla stabilizer, and I do still expect the color to change over time. We'll see. I sprinkled cocoa powder between the layers for the thin line, and then topped with plain, unscented soap on top. I like how it looks now and I think I will like it as it morphs, too. I'll keep you posted.

"Have I Lost My Marbles? No, I Fried Them!" Soap

This is a Fullamoon original I dreamt up in honor of Tamra of DelightfulU who nominated me for the Versatile Blogger Award. I figured I'd better come up with something original and fabulous to live up to this award.

Ladies and gentleman (that's you, Kevin, I think you're the only gentleman who follows me) I give you (drum roll)...Fried Marble Soap!

Okay now first let me explain I've never actually fried marbles myself, but I do recall hearing that jewelers make crackled marbles by frying them in a pan and then dumping them into freezing cold water, which crackles the marbles from the inside out. Here's a photo I found of the real McCoy:

From these beautiful fried marbles, you can make earrings, slides and bangles by bending wire cages around the marbles. Now here is my melt and pour soapy interpretation:

And here they are embedded in a solid color bar:

Like gemstone soaps, these were quite time consuming but worth it. I documented each stage so I can post a tutorial. I am delighted to share this with you!

For this project I used Bramble Berry's:

White Ginger Tea fragrance
Copper Sparkle Mica
Liquid Orange color
Clear soap base
Goats milk white soap base
12-bar soap mold from Bramble Berry
Melon baller
Spritzer with rubbing alcohol
Knife
Glass container to melt soap base in microwave

Here are blocks of opaque orange, copper sparkle mica and clear.

To make the ribbons, slicc the copper and orange into thin strips.

Give each strip a twist and set aside. This will form the "glass" ribbon inside the marbles.

Chop up the clear block this way and that. These small cubes will form the cracks inside the marbles that give them a crackle appearance. See where I'm going with this?

I like marbles with more than one color inside them so I also made orange ribbons to complement the copper. I could have used solid white or some other color as well.

I layered the embeds in the following order - clear chunks, mica ribbon, orange ribbon, then clear chunks again. This ensures that the ribbons will appear in the center of your marbles. Spritz with alcohol and then pour melted clear with the fragrance in it to fill the rest of the mold.

Get your melon baller ready!

I used the larger side of the melon baller but smaller marbles would have been cool as well. I think the bigger they are the more dramatic they are. I was able to scoop out 5 marbles per square using the melon baller. The soap was a little soft, so I could really dig deep and get a full sphere.

I plopped them into colored soap and as I use the bar the marbles will appear from within. Of course once I unmolded the soap I wondered why I didn't just use clear to fill the bar. Oh well. Next time.

So there you have it. Soap marbles. Pretty cool, eh? I think next time I will skip the crackle part, use two colors for the ribbons and sink them in clear soap base.
