Where the Search Engine Spiders Will Look for Your Keywords

The first place to use your keywords, and the easiest way to get a search engine “bump”, is to choose a domain name that includes your best keywords. Simply find a domain that is as short as possible and includes you best keyword phrase. This can be overdone if you try too hard; be sure that the domain name is also human friendly (not just “search engine spider” friendly).

The next place to insert your keywords is in the title and description tags. If you have a wordpress.org blog this is easy to do because you just enter the title and description of each page using the SEO plug-in.

The title and description, or "meta description" are important for two reasons. One, they will be visible to your audience in the search engine results. And two, they will ALWAYS be spidered by the search engines. If you know some HTML you can easily locate the title and description tags and insert your keyword-precise title and description for your website. The title and description should be entered below the <head> tag in your page code in the following format:

<title>YOUR TITLE</title>

<meta name="description" content="YOUR PAGE DESCRIPTION WITH KEYWORDS."/>

NOTE: You will do all this for your homepage as well as every other page on your website that has related content. Each page can, and should be, optimized for a certain keyword phrase, or a couple keyword phrases.

The third place you need your keywords is in the "meta keywords". These are not visible anywhere on the page, but are seen by the search engine spiders. They are not as important for Google as they once were, but they're still important for other search engines. All you do for these is list your best keywords in order of importance and add them to your website code in this form:

<meta name="keywords" content="KEYWORD, KEYWORD, KEYWORD, ETC."/>

The next “hidden” place you should put your keywords is in image file names and “alt text” (this can also be found in your page code). As you know every file has a name and images are no different. Use your keywords as they apply when naming your images.

The “alt text” for your image is just the description of the image that people will see who have a text-only browser.

Another area to use your keywords is in the “H” tags. The H1 tag is viewed as the most important by the search engines, as it should because these tags also dictate the size of the text on the page. H1 would be considered a headline and H2 a sub-headline and so on.

And last, but not least, you need to use your keywords in the content of your page. Each article or post should use the keyword you would like to optimize it for once in the title or headline (H1), once again in the first 50 words of the page and then at about a 2-3% frequency throughout the page.

The important part with this is to be sure that it reads well for your human viewers and not just the search engine spiders!

Be sure to use your keywords in these places on every page of your website and you will soon be pulling in tons of FREE traffic; That is if you have chosen the best keywords for your business.

Never, Ever, EVER begin optimizing your website unless you have proven that your keywords will do two things:

1) Generate website traffic for your business

2) Attract only those prospects interested in what you’re selling

Creating a list of keywords to use to optimize your website or blog is not a complicated task. That is, until you find out you have the wrong keywords.

So, how do you find out if your keywords will attract the right prospects? And more importantly, how do you do this quickly?!!

The answer is pay-per-click, or PPC. By leveraging paid advertising through Google Adwords or Yahoo Search Marketing you can quickly find whether or not your keywords will be profitable for your business.

To set up a keyword test follow these steps:

Set up a “Landing Page” with a lead-capture form that contains some kind of “offer” that you will give your visitor in exchange for his or her email address

Break your keywords into related groups (you may want to use a free tool called Traffic Travis to do this)

Create a campaign in your preferred PPC provider (Google often has promotions for $100 to use towards advertising) for your keyword test

Put your groups of keywords each in a separate “ad group” and write an ad for each (To get ideas for ads run a search for your keywords in the search engine and look at the competing advertisers ads) **NOTE: Make sure the ad is consistent with your offer on the landing page**

Be sure to set a daily limit on your budget

Let this test run for a week and then go back and evaluate your results.

After a week look at the number of times each keyword prompted your ad to be displayed. Then look at the “click-through rate”. The number of displays will give you an idea of how popular each keyword phrase is, and the click-through rate will tell you how well searchers who input that particular keyword are attracted to your offer.

If you do not have enough "clicks" (often caused by a low position in the results) you can run the test again for another week. But be sure to increase your bid by 25-50% for all keywords that are not in the top 4 positions.

Utilizing this simple (and free if you get Google Adwords’ $100 credit) method of keyword conversion testing can save you thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours you’d otherwise be wasting on keywords that just don’t convert for your particular business. Whether this is your first time at keyword selection or the hundredth, there is simply no reason not to go through this final keyword evaluation step.

To see how to build a profitable keyword list from scratch watch this video and get my free DVD: “7 Secrets to Creating a Profitable Keyword List”.

Low Keyword Competition will Get You Quick Traffic, but You Want to Increase TARGETED Web Site Traffic for Maximize Profit

You can spend so much time and effort finding keywords with the most traffic and least keyword competition that you overlook the most important part: Relevancy. Generating a lot of traffic to your website does not mean that you will make more money. If your keywords aren’t what your ideal prospect will use to find you, you cannot increase TARGETED web site traffic and your keywords will prove to be quite miserable at converting traffic into sales.

So what you have to do is identify your ideal prospect. Your ideal prospect is the one who needs your product, or service. They are the whole reason you are in business.

To be sure you increase TARGETED web site traffic you need to qualify all of your keyword phrases before you settle on a final keyword list.

Here are a few questions you should ask yourself when qualifying your keywords for relevancy:

· Are they relevant to what my business does?

· Does each keyword phrase make logical sense?

· Would my target customer use these keywords to find me (my business)?

To help you answer the third question you can type the keyword phrase into a search and evaluate your keyword competition. First, look at the organic search results and see what your keyword phrase competitors are selling and determine if your products/services are similar. Of course there will be varying types of businesses for some keywords, but you’ll be able to determine which ones seem to make the most sense.

Also in the search results, quickly see what is being sold in the paid ads on the right hand side. (Keep in mind that every time you click one of these links someone is paying, so be nice and right click and open the link in a new window.) See if these businesses are offering similar products/services to you. If so, there’s a good chance that you have found a good keyword phrase that will increase your targeted web site traffic.

Not all high traffic and low competition keywords will bring you more business. Traffic, yes, but if your visitors have come looking for something other than what you’re offering then they will quickly disappear. The only way to make money from your keywords is to be sure they match your business and that your customer is using them to find you. Use the information in this article and you can increase your TARGETED web site traffic.

The best search engine optimization advice I can give to anyone starting to market online is to rank your potential keywords based on profitability.

To generate web site traffic you don’t need a huge list of keywords, you just need a few good ones. If you are already using some keywords test them first to see if you should continue to use them.

The data that you need for ranking your keywords are:

1) the number of exact phrase match web pages ( for more information on this click here: keyword competition)

2) the average amount of traffic for each keyword phrase (for more information click here: keyword search volume)

Put this data in a spreadsheet across from each keyword in a separate column.

To sort this data correctly for keyword profitability you need to follow a couple of guidelines.

· Google phrase match search results under 10,000 for keywords indicate a quick first page ranking (with proper optimization strategy)

· Keywords with search volumes of at least 1000 per month, or 35 per day, can generate enough web site traffic to optimize for

Basically you can order your words in the spreadsheet according to the above metrics and remove those that do not qualify and then narrow them down further until you have 10-12 keyword phrases. This is done simply by first sorting your list by the least keyword competition, and then by the most keyword search volume.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind if you run into any trouble when trying to decide between words.

1) If you have a product or service with a high price point you can optimize for words with lower search volumes because you don’t need as many sales to profit. And avoiding competition only generates web site traffic faster.

2) When comparing a high competition, high search volume keyword to a low volume, low competition keyword the low competition keyword is always better (if it meets the minimum search volume criteria). Again, the faster you put yourself in a position where you can generate web site traffic, the more profitable you’ll be.

This is by no means an exhaustive study of keyword selection, but by using this method you will be able to quickly assess the value of your keywords.

Improve Web Site Traffic by Knowing Keyword Search Volume

Do you know how many people are searching for the search engine optimized keywords that you’re using? How will you know if your SEO keywords will actually improve web site traffic?

I will show you how to determine the search volume for your keywords and gauge that against your keyword competition to get an idea of how quickly you can increase your web site traffic – For Free!

You don’t want to waste your time and money optimizing your website for the search engines with keywords that are not going to improve your web site traffic, so the first step you must do is determine the amount of traffic each of your potential keyword phrases is getting.

To do this you can either use the Google Adwords Keyword tool or Traffic-Travis. (Note that Traffic-Travis counts search volume per day, while Google Adwords Keyword tool shows you searches per month.)

I prefer Traffic-Travis over the Google keyword tool because it’s much easier to read and gives you search volumes for MSN and Yahoo, as well as Google. But it’s worth noting that you should compare results once in a while. (and yes, you should check these numbers on a regular basis) No program is perfect, and this includes paid services. Results will surely vary from one keyword search volume tool to the next.

As a side note you should be aware that the traffic volumes for keywords do fluctuate. And if you start to see a downward trend you may want to reevaluate your efforts of optimization for that particular keyword phrase.

Traffic-Travis is very easy, and it comes with many other helpful features, but for this article we’re just going to use the Keyword Finder. Once you download it click ‘Keyword Finder’ and type in your first keyword. Keep track of the results in a spreadsheet and repeat for all of your keywords.

Hopefully you have also done some keyword competition research and have the number of times each keyword is found (for the exact phrase match) in a Google search. To determine if the search volume is going to be enough for each keyword you have to know how much competition you’re up against as well.

Sort your keyword list by lowest to highest competition and then compare to the amount of the search results. As a rule of thumb you want to have at least 1000 searches per month for the keyword phrase (approximately 33 per day) and in order to rank quickly you will want the number of exact phrase match search results to be under 10,000 (with 50,000 being your absolute limit in most cases).

If the keyword competition is low enough (under 10,000 pages) you can be on the first page of the search results in as little as a week. Once you’re on the first page you can expect to see at least 10% of the traffic. The higher you get ranked the more traffic you will bring in. If you’re in the top 5 spots you’ll see 30% of the traffic; top 3 – 50%; etc. So if the keyword phrase gets 2000 searches per month, you will improve web site traffic by 1000 visitors per month once you reach the top three spots.

Hello Online Business Owners!

Do you know how to evaluate keyword competition so you can increase targeted web site traffic???....

Well, read on and make yourself some money!

The most important part of keyword selection is to see what kind of keyword competition you have. If the competition is too high it will take years for you to increase targeted web site traffic.

The first step to evaluating your keyword phrases for competition is to type them into Google (or your search engine of choice) and see how many results come back. This number (at the top right of the search results) will tell you the number of competing web pages that have all of the words in your keyword phrase, but not necessarily in that particular order. At the same time you need to search each keyword phrase with quotation marks around it to find how many pages have that exact keyword phrase (same word order) in them.

Keep a spreadsheet of these results. (You'll see why in a minute.)

These pages are not necessarily search engine optimized for the keyword you searched, so your actual keyword competition is much less. You should be able to out-perform most of them with proper SEO technique. However, there is a certain number of competing pages that would make the prospect of getting a first page Google ranking a very unlikely possibility.

Exact, or phrase match, results of less than 10,000 will get you a relatively quick ranking so you can increase your targeted web site traffic in just a couple of months.

Run all of your potential keyword phrases through Google as described and then narrow them down with a couple of quick “sorts” in an excel spreadsheet.

You should have three columns of data as follows:

1 – the list of keyword phrases

2 – the number pages for the general search results for each keyword

3 – the number of pages for exact phrase match results

Simply highlight column 2 and click “sort by ascending order”. (I will generally cut off the list at 1,000,000 search results, but it depends how many words are left. If you don’t have any with less search results you need to find more keywords to research.)

Now highlight and sort by the third column in ascending order. Anything over 100,000 exact matches indicates highly competitive keyword competition.

You will want to narrow it down to the best 20 or less keyword phrases.

Keyword selection is part ‘Art’ and part ‘Science’. And this is just one part of selecting keywords. You still must make sure these are the actual words your target audience is using to find you online, and that there are enough people searching these keywords to make it worthwhile for you to optimize your website for them.
