Practice basic math skills with this cool craft stick abacus. Countries all around the world have been using the abacus for thousands of years to make math problems easier to visualize and calculate. Even children who claim to hate math will be fascinated by this old-fashioned and incredibly simple tool.

Craft Stick Abacus

This abacus is surprisingly easy to construct and is a great way for visual and tactile learners to practice their arithmetic.

What You Need:

• Pencil
• 9 craft sticks
• 56 large pony beads
• 8 bamboo skewers, 4″ long (if yours are longer, cut them to the right length)
• Wood glue

What You Do:

1. Lay three craft sticks down so they are parallel. Use the pencil to draw eight matching lines on each stick, evenly spaced and centered across the length of the craft sticks.
2. Take the bamboo skewers and align them with the pencil marks. There should be one craft stick at each end of the skewers. The third craft stick should be in the middle, about 1 inch away from one of craft sticks on the end.
3. Put a thin line of glue on each of the pencil lines you’ve drawn.
4. Carefully thread seven beads on each of the eight skewers. Place the skewers on the glue lines, arranging the beads so that two beads fall into the 1-inch space between the two closely-placed sticks and the other five fall into the larger space between the middle and end sticks. Let the sticks dry.
5. Glue three craft sticks on top of the bamboo skewers so they line up with the sticks below, taking care to keep the beads divided. Let the sticks dry.
6. Glue the last three craft sticks on top of the sticks you’ve just glued down. Let dry.
7. Flip the abacus over so that the stacked sticks are on the bottom. Depending on the size of the beads, you may have to add more craft sticks to the bottom. The stacked sticks let the beads slide smoothly on the skewers and prevent them from scraping along the surface you’re working on.

Create a miniature underwater world with a paper plate and colorful paper, adding Kix cereal to the bottom for a textured touch on this paper plate aquarium.

For this paper plate aquarium you will need:

2 light blue paper plates (or plain plates painted light blue)
Colored paper
Googly eyes
Handful of Kix cereal
Colorful tri-beads
Glue

Glue Kix cereal to the bottom of the blue side of the first plate.

Cut fish and plants from colorful paper and glue to the plate. Add googly eyes to the fish. Glue tri-beads to the cereal. Cut the center out of the second paper plate and glue it to the front of the aquarium.

Now you’re ready for a little aquatic fun!

Learn how to transform an ordinary paper plate into this cute crab! A fun summertime craft for your kids.

Summertime means spending time at the beach, and for many families, a trip to the ocean! Talking to kids about the different animals that live in the ocean is always fun, and creating a craft to make one is even better. Instead of your everyday flat paper plate crab, I’ll show you how to make one with a bit more dimension!

You will need:

Paper plate
Red craft paint
2 googly eyes
Red pipe cleaner
Tools: paintbrush, scissors, hole puncher, hot glue gun or quick drying glue
Print the pattern here

SAFETY NOTE: We recommend that parents handle the glue gun, or if your child is familiar with handling one safely, to supervise them closely.

Start by painting both sides of the paper plate with red paint and let it dry completely.

Print the pattern above and use it to cut the paper plate. The legs are cut from the top of the plate, as indicated by dashed lines in the pattern.

To make the front claws stand up and be three dimensional, first fold them upward on over the paper plate body.

Next, fold down about an inch or so from your first crease and fold upward. Then a few inches after that, fold down again.

For the eyes, use a hole punch to create two holes about an inch apart on top of the head.

Cut your pipe cleaner in half, then fold each piece in half. Glue an eye to the top of each pipe cleaner. Insert the pipe cleaner eyes into the holes in the head about halfway. Turn the plate over and bend the pipe cleaners flush with the plate. Hot glue them in place. Turn the plate back over and bend the eyes to stand straight up.

Take the six back legs you cut from the top of the paper plate and bend each one in half.

Glue one to the back of the paper plate, just behind where the front claw begins. Glue the other two legs in place as well. Do any adjustment bending and creasing needed and your crab is all done! Cuteness!
