This adorable mobile is a time consuming project, but the results are well-worth the time invested! You can shorten the time of this craft by making it a group project. Let each child make one bug to hang on the mobile and it’ll come together in no time.

Egg Carton Buggy Mobile

This pretty bug mobile is a fun project for spring and is great for a group of children!

What you’ll need

• Cardboard egg carton
• Scraps of colorful patterned papers (wallpaper samples, old greeting cards) or construction paper
• Acrylic paints: red, orange, brown, light blue, green, purple, yellow, white and pink
• Scissors
• 2 black skinny chenille stems
• 9 flat-backed heavy pebbles, marbles, or other object
• White yarn
• 2 heavy twigs or craft dowels
• 9 medium black pom poms
• 18 small googly eyes
• White craft glue
• Acrylic sealer spray
• Paintbrush
• Hot glue gun

How to make it

1. Remove the lid of the cardboard egg carton and save it for another project. Place bottom of egg carton upside down and paint each section with the desired color. You will need two cups painted the same color for each bug. Add a second coat of paint. When the paint is dry, spray all painted cups with acrylic sealer. Cut the egg carton sections apart. Trim around the sections so that all you have left are colored cups.
   
2. If the patterned paper you chose is single-sided, fold it in half with the pattern on the outside. Put a layer of glue in between the layers and stick together. This will create a piece of patterned paper that is patterned on both sides. If you are using construction paper, this step is not necessary. Cut leaf-shaped wings from the paper.
3. Divide the egg cups so that one cup of each colored pair is in a separate group. Turn one group of colored cups over and set the other group aside.
4. Squeeze some white glue into each of the cups that are turned upward. Place a flat-backed marble into each cup and allow time for the glue to dry. This will give each bug enough weight that they will hang nicely on your mobile and will cut down on the lines tangling together. It will also help the bugs to “look” downward so that they are seen from the ground.
5. Cut 9 pieces of yarn about 18” long each.
6. Glue a black pom pom onto the closed (bottom) end of each of the egg cup halves with the marble in them. Now pair up your colored egg cups.
7. To assemble each bug body you will need a pair of the same colored egg cups, a set of paper wings, an 18” piece of yarn, and your hot glue gun. Pipe a layer of hot glue onto the outer open edge of the egg cup with the marble in it, place the wings onto the glue, the yarn in the middle of the open cup at the top, and then the other egg cup goes on last. Repeat these steps for each bug.
8. Now that the bodies are assembled you can glue the googly eyes onto the black pom poms.
9. Cut the black chenille stems into 2” pieces. Bend the ends or twist them around a thin-handled paintbrush. Put a dot of hot glue on the straight end and push into the top of the pom pom. Repeat for the other antenna.
10. Cut another piece of yarn about 12” in length. Crisscross the two dowels and wrap them with yarn, adding a dot of glue to reinforce them. Be sure there is enough yarn left over to tie a loop at the top to hang your mobile.
11. Tie each bug onto the dowels, two on each ‘arm” and one in the middle. Stagger the lengths and tie in place. When you have them where you want them, trim the excess.

Mom and Me Wooden Spoons

These cute little dolls made from wooden spoons can be personalized however you’d like. Use your mom’s hair color and favorite outfit, then adjust the child to look just like yourself.

What you’ll need

• 2 wooden spoons, one larger than the other
• Yarn in your choice of colors
• Scissors
• Ribbon
• White craft glue
• Googly eyes
• 2 small pink pom-poms
• small pink beads
• Pink and red crayons
• Felt, buttons and pom-poms

How to make it

1. Take a long piece of yarn and fold it back and forth so that each length touches end to end until you have a small handful. Tie a piece of ribbon in the center. Don’t tie it too tight, just enough to gather it together. Tie into a bow, trim ribbon ends, and cut all the looped ends to create the hair. Pipe some glue around the top of the wooden spoon and press the yarn hair onto the “head”.
2. Glue on googly eyes, a pom-pom for a nose, and use marker to draw on mouth. Use a pink crayon for cheeks and red for Mom’s lipstick.
3. Make a necklace for Mom by stringing the beads onto a piece of ribbon. Tie around neck of spoon.
4. To create the dress, fold the corner of a piece of felt down and place the spoon (face down) onto the felt. The folded corner will be the dress’s neckline. Fold the felt over one side, then fold the other side over. Glue in place.

5. Slide off the spoon and trim the bottom straight to create dress. Slip the spoon back into the felt dress and glue in place.

6. Repeat all steps for the child spoon. Decorate with pom-poms, buttons, and ribbon.

Helpful Tips:

• To create a quick display can, insert some floral foam inside a clean aluminum can and insert the spoons. Tie a piece of ribbon or felt around the center of the can.
• Painting the spoons is not necessary but you may do so if you wish.
• To make a boy spoon, cut short pieces of yarn, no ribbon, and use a straight tube of felt for the clothing.

World’s Best Dad Trophy

Make Dad a shiny gold trophy for Father’s Day using foam cups. This trophy will show him that he’s #1 in your heart!

Materials:

• 2 foam or paper coffee cups
• 5 inch square box
• Masking tape
• Gold pipe cleaner
• Gold craft paint
• Black construction paper, cut to fit on side of box
• White paint pen
• Scissors
• Paintbrush
• White craft glue

Steps:

1. Turn cups upside down and trim bottom lips to make them flush.
2. Glue the bottoms of the two cups together.
3. Tape the square box shut by covering the entire box with masking tape.
4. When glue on the cups have dried, wrap a piece of masking tape around the middle where the two cups meet.
5. Cut the pipe cleaner in half and insert into each side of one of the cups as trophy handles.
6. Cover cups completely with masking tape.
7. Paint masking tape on both the trophy and the box gold. Let dry.
8. Write “Awarded World’s Best Dad” on the black construction paper with white paint pen. Glue to the front of the box.
9. Pipe white glue onto the bottom of the cup that does not have the pipe cleaner handles. Press onto the top of the box and let glue dry completely.
10. Fill with dad’s favorite candy or treat!

‘You’re Out of This World’ Alien Robot

Show dad here’s the star of your solar system by making his this adorable alien robot!

What You Need:

• 1” wooden cube
• 1.5” wooden cube
• neon green and orange paint
• paint brush
• scrap of blue felt
• medium white pom-pom
• miniature black pom-pom
• white craft glue
• white paint pen
• black, blue and purple fine point markers
• modeling clay
• 3” piece of orange skinny chenille stem
• 2 yellow chenille stems
• toothpick
• tape
• small piece of white cardboard or construction paper
• scissors

How To Make It:

1. Paint the two wooden blocks with neon green paint and let dry.
2. Glue the smaller block (head) on top of the larger block (body).
3. Cut a simple tie shape from a piece of blue felt. Glue the tie to the front of the blocks.
4. Glue the white pom-pom to the head, leaving room below it for the mouth. Glue the miniature black pom-pom to the center of the white pom-pom.
5. Use a white paint pen to dot on two teeth, about ½” apart. Use the black marker to draw a straight line directly above the “teeth” for the mouth.
6. Cut the 3” piece of orange skinny chenille in half and set aside. Cut the yellow chenille stems into 4 pieces each for a total of 8 pieces. Set aside.
7. Roll up small pieces of modeling clay, about the size of a plastic pony bead. Gently press two pieces to the top of the head, but do not flatten them. You just want to stick them to the wood. Use your fingers to round them up again if they are too flat. Insert the orange chenille, one into each piece, for the antennae.
8. Repeat the process in step 7 for the arms and legs. Place the modeling clay on each side of the body, in the center, for the arms. Place a piece of clay on the side of the body, toward the lower front corner, both sides. Bend the chenille into arms and insert four into the sides of the body, two on each side. Insert the legs into the clay, two on each side. Place alien robot on the edge of the table and bend legs in place.
9. The modeling clay will need to dry overnight in order to adhere to the wood. Move alien robot to a safe place. Don’t worry if the clay falls off when you move it, just replace it and allow it to dry. The clay will dry and stick to the wood surface but will also remain pliable.
10. The next day, add spots to your alien robot’s body by dipping the handle end of a paintbrush into orange paint and dotting on to the wooden cubes. Let dry.
11. Make the sign by writing “You’re Out of This World!” on a piece of paper or white cardboard, then trim it with scissors. Cut the sharp points of the toothpick off with scissors and tape the toothpick to the back of the sign.
12. Remove the arm that will hold the sign (the chenille should still be removable), and wrap the “hand” around the toothpick. Secure it with a little white craft glue.
13. Remove each arm and leg carefully, add a dot of white craft glue and replace. Let dry.
14. Helpful Hints
    If you don’t have a white paint pen, a toothpick dipped in white craft paint will work as well.
15. To simplify this project a bit, skip the spots and glue the chenille to the wood. You may have to hold them in place until they adhere.
16. Try other neon colors instead of green. Just be sure to use brightly colored chenille.

What You Need:

• construction paper
• scissors
• photo
• copy of the poem (typed or handwritten)
• glue stick

How to Make It:

1. Select a piece of blue construction paper to be the background. Cut a wiggly oval from light blue construction paper and glue it to the background paper.
2. Glue the photo and the poem to the light blue paper.
