Known as Yueyaquan in Chinese, the crescent-shaped lake is a major tourist attraction where one of the world’s great shrines to Buddhism resides.

Designated a World Heritage Site, the lake has been shrinking since the 1970s and is now about a third of its original size. In the last three decades alone, the lake has dropped more than 25 feet. However, it has been reported that the government has recently taken steps to preserve the site and restore the depth of the lake to previous levels (unsure how well that initiative is going though).

An ancient city that once served as China’s gateway to the West, Dunhuang is now threatened by very modern demands. A dam built three decades ago to help local farming, combined with a doubling of the population, have overstressed a fragile desert hydrology that had been stable for thousands of years. in an effort to combat obesity.

The proposed first-in-the-nation ban would impose a 16-ounce limit on the size of sweetened drinks sold at restaurants, movie theaters, sports venues and street carts. It would apply to bottled drinks as well as fountain sodas.

The ban, which could take effect as soon as March, would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks or alcoholic beverages. Nor would it include drinks sold in grocery or convenience stores. Food establishments that don't downsize would face fines of $200.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Wednesday that he "thinks it's what the public wants the mayor to do."

A spokesman for the New York City Beverage Association, Stefan Friedman, criticized the proposal as "zealous." He said officials should seek solutions that are actually going to curb obesity.
The proposal requires the approval of the city's Board of Health, which is considered likely because its members are all appointed by Bloomberg.

Under the three-term mayor, the city has campaigned aggressively against obesity, including outlawing trans-fats in restaurant food and forcing chain restaurants to post calorie counts on menus.

The Bloomberg administration has tried other ways to make soda consumption less appealing. The mayor supported a state tax on sodas, but the measure died in Albany, and he tried to restrict the use of food stamps to buy sodas, an idea federal regulars rejected.

City Hall's latest proposal does not require outside approval, according to The New York Times, although public hearings will be held.

Poonam Pandey had promised she will strip if superstar Shah Rukh Khan's franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the fifth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). And the controversial model kept her word.

Post the KKR win, she posted her nude pic on twitter. In the picture update, Poonam lies nude on her stomach, wearing a pair of black heels, and has accessorised her bare look with black beads on her wrist and a black coloured neckpiece.

"Wowwwwwwwwwwww what ever team I support always wins #IPL #KKR #SRK so as I promised, a pic is on its way," Poonam tweeted soon after KKR won against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) the IPL-5 final in Chennai.

American head shapes have been changing, but why?

White Americans’ heads and faces have been changing in shape on average, and no one knows quite why, according to new research.

In a trend that can be identified going back to the mid-1800s, U.S. skulls have gotten bigger, taller and narrower as seen from the front, said Richard and Lee Jantz, a husband-and-wife team of forensic anthropologists at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. They also found that faces have become significantly narrower and higher, though this shift is less pronounced than those affecting the whole cranium.

Their faces may be illustrative of general trends affecting American skulls and faces: they have become taller and narrower on average since Webster's time, according to anthropologist Richard Jantz. The selection of these two faces and photos is unscientific and they have not been scaled to show their true relative sizes.

The changes continue into the generation born in the 1980s, from which come the latest skulls available for the research, according to the Jantzes, who presented their findings April 14 at the annual meeting in Portland, Ore. of American Association of Physical Anthropologists.

“I don’t have any reason to believe” the changes have stopped, said Richard Jantz in an interview.

He cited dramatic increases in the availability of nutrition, better medical care and lower infant mortality as possible factors behind the changes, but expressed pessimism that a definitive reason can be identified. The sheer number of changes that have swept American life make that an “endlessly complicated” proposition, he said.

“We are living in an environment that’s totally different from what’s ever existed in the past. It’s like putting experimental animals in an extreme environment.”

A larger head could allow for greater intelligence, but it’s unclear whether the increases are related to improvements in intelligence scores, Jantz said. Some aspects of the shifts in skull shape aren’t necessarily healthy. Earlier puberty, which has led to reports of girls getting pregnant before their teens, may be reflected in the earlier closing in youth of a separation in the bone structure of the skull called the spheno-occipital synchondrosis, he observed. America’s obesity epidemic is the latest development that could affect skeletal shape, Jantz said, but its precise effects are as yet unclear.

Although the changes in skull structure may be likely to go on, “they don’t necessarily have to continue in the same direction,” he added.

The research only assessed Americans of European ancestry because these provided the largest sample sizes to work with, said Jantz. Over 1,500 skulls were included in the research, many of them coming from the donated collection at the University of Tennessee.

The average height from the base to the top of the skull in males has increased by 8 millimeters (0.3 inches), the Jantzes found; skull size has grown by 200 cubic millimeters, a space equivalent to a couple of small peas. In females, the corresponding increases are 7 millimeters and 180 cubic millimeters.

Changes in skeletal structure are taking place in many parts of the globe, not just the United States, Jantz said. But they tend to be less well studied elsewhere, with the exception of a well-documented increase in human height across the industrialized world in recent centuries. “From what we know, in Europe there are some” shifts in skull shape, Jantz said, but “not as dramatic as seen in the U.S.”

Jantz tends to focus on lifestyle as a principle reason for the changes, not human evolution, although he said he doesn’t rule out the latter. The trend in skull shape “tracks calories available pretty strongly” in the industrialized world, he noted.

The observed growth in skull height is to some extent part of an overall documented increase in whole-body height. But Jantz has found that the skull-height increases are considerably out of proportion to those elsewhere the body, and also have continued whereas the overall heightening has slowed or stopped in recent years.

Your best side may be your left cheek, according to a new study.

The research, by Kelsey Blackburn and James Schirillo from Wake Forest University in North Carolina, finds that images of the left side of the face are perceived and rated as more pleasant than pictures of the right side. This may be because we present emotion more intensely on the left side of our face, say Blackburn and Schirillo, who publish their results in the journal Experimental Brain Research.

Past studies suggest that the left side of the face is more intense and active during emotional expression—which may explain why Western artists’ portraits predominantly present subjects’ left profile, Blackburn and Schirillo said.
“Our results suggest that posers’ left cheeks tend to exhibit a greater intensity of emotion, which observers find more aesthetically pleasing,” they wrote. “Our findings provide support for a number of concepts – the notions of lateralized emotion and right hemispheric [right half of the brain] dominance with the right side of the brain controlling the left side of the face during emotional expression.”

Participants were asked to rate the pleasantness of both sides of male and female faces in black-and-white photos. The researchers presented both original photos and mirror-reversed images, so that an original right-cheek image looked like a left-cheek image and vice versa. The researchers found a strong preference for left-sided portraits, regardless of whether the pictures were originally taken of the left side, or mirror-reversed. The left side of the face was rated as more aesthetically pleasing for both male and female posers.

These preferences were also confirmed by measurements of pupil size, a reliable unconscious measurement of interest, the investigators found. Pupils dilate in response to more interesting or pleasant stimuli, and constrict when looking at unpleasant images, they noted.

This discourse narrates the circumstances that led to the birth of Srimad Bhagavatam and the story of sage Narada's previous birth.

The Vedas form the very foundation of the whole universe. Ithihaasas – Puranas (Epic / Scriptures) are merely derivatives of the Vedas and expound on the end purpose of the Vedas.
The Vedas, Mahabharata, the Puranas and the Bhrama-sutras have all been bestowed upon us by Sage Veda Vyasa. These constitute the very bedrock of our existence. Don’t they? It is these that address the very fundamental questions such as,

How was the world created?
Who is God?
Why has God created us?
What is our state before and after death?
How should we live?
What constitutes a sin and what constitutes a Merit?

The term 'Vedas' means knowledge or wisdom. The next logical question that arises is whose wisdom are we talking about when we refer to the Vedas? The Vedas represent God's wisdom. Man first draws up a building plan before the actual execution of construction. Likewise, the Vedas form the master plan drawn by the master himself before carrying out his work of creation. Even today, the Vedic sounds reverberate in the cosmos,

The Maharishis (Sages) have, through their divine power, grasped those cosmic vibrations and have bestowed them as the Vedas. The great Veda Vyasa made a compilation of all those and organized it in the current form.
Once, Veda Vyasa experienced confusion in his mind! Isn't this surprising? Do even realized souls like Veda Vyasa get into confusion and distress? Just as we are unable to sleep peacefully owning to our deep concern over various worldly matter such as son's education, daughter's wedding, employment and financial commitments to cite a few instances, Realized souls feel a very great mental unrest, when they contemplate on ways to uplift Mankind who are caught in ignorance (Maya). In spite of bestowing the Holy Scriptures, Veda Vyasa himself felt restless.

It was at this juncture that Sage Narada came there by chance. Veda Vyasa received the sage warmly and worshipped him as per scriptural injunctions.
Looking at Veda Vyasa, Narada asked, "Great Sage! Why do you appear distressed? What is troubling you?".

Veda Vyasa replied, "The thoughts of the realized souls can only be comprehended by another, sage Narada! I beseech you, who has rightly identified that my mind is troubled, to also explain the cause behind it?

At once Narada said, "In the path of Karma advocated by you, one has to follow the Scriptural injunctions scrupulously without any compromise. Following, the path of Karma without adhering to the Scriptural injunctions will not reap any benefit. Likewise, the path of Raja yoga is full stringent regulations such as control over the senses. Slightest deviation from them would lead to mental disorders. The Vedanta marga requires dispassion (Vairagya) of the highest order, without which one cannot attain liberation. The scripture describe God a being fair complexioned in Krita Yuga (the first of the four yugas where everything was perfect). As people of that yuga (Age) were pure, they were able to perform dhyana (One pointed meditation) as they could easily gain control over the mind.

கடல் குதிரைகள் தங்களின் வாலைப் புல்களில் கட்டிக்கொண்டு நிற்க முடியும். இதன் உடல் கடினமான எலும்பு போன்ற பொருள்களினால் ஆன போதிலும் நண்டு பெங்குவின் முதலியன இவற்றை வேட்டையாடி உண்கின்றன. பெரும்பாலான மீன்கள் கடல் குதிரையைக் கண்டுகொள்வதில்லை.கடல் குதிரைக்குக் கடலில் உள்ள விரோதிகளைக் காட்டிலும் நிலத்தில் உள்ள விரோதியான மனிதன் தான் மிகுந்த தொல்லை கொடுக்கிறான். மீன் இனத்தைச் சேர்ந்த உயிரினம்தான் கடல்குதிரை. பார்ப்பதற்கு முதலைக் குட்டியைப் போலிருக்கும். ஆண் கடல் குதிரையின் வாலின் கீழே பை போன்ற அமைப்பு இருக்கும். ஆண் கடல் குதிரைகளின் இந்தப் பையில்தான் பெண் கடல் குதிரைகள் முட்டையிடுகின்றன.

முட்டைகள் பொரிவதும் வெளிவரும் குஞ்சுகள் சிறிது காலம் வளர்வதும் இந்தப் பையில்தான். முட்டைகள் பொரிந்து குஞ்சுகள் வெளிவரும் நேரத்தில் அப்பா கடற்குதிரைக்கு பிரசவ வலி வரும். அப்போது அது நீருக்கடியில் உள்ள புதற்களுக்கிடையே கிடந்து மிகவும் சிரமப்படும். உடலை முன்னும் பின்னுமாக அசைத்து வளைக்கும். இப்படி வளையும்போது பையின் தசைகள் விரிவடையும். ஒவ்வொரு முறை வளையும்போதும் ஒவ்வொரு குஞ்சு வெளிவரும். இதில் பிரச்சனை என்னவென்றால் கடல்குதிரையின் இனப்பெருக்க வேகம் மிகவும் குறைவு. மனிதர்களுக்கு வேகத்தைத் தரும் கடல் குதிரைகளுக்குத் தான் வேகம் வருவதில்லை. இப்படியே போனால் எதிர்காலத்தில் கடல் குதிரைகள் என்கிற இனம் என்ன ஆகுமென்று யாருக்கும் தெரியாது.

In the last 25 years Mecca has been though a huge transformation; dividing opinion among Muslim from all over the world as it grew from a small, desert town into a huge metropolis with skyscrapers, garish shopping malls and luxury hotels.

Built on profits from the country's enormous oil wealth, Mecca has become of symbol of both Islam and capitalism, as Hajj souvenirs, necklaces and jewellery are being sold to the pilgrims.

For many however the city's new landscapes is hurting the country's archaeological heritage and deplore the fact that Mecca, once a place where the Prophet Muhammad insisted all Muslims would be equal, has become a playground for the rich.

Criticising the holy city in the Muslim world is still however very controversial, especially in Saudi Arabia where openly discussing such issues risks being associated with criticising the Kingdoms regime.

Outside of the Kingdom, other Muslims countries are also often afraid of voicing too much criticisms for fears that a diplomatic dispute could lead to restriction on their citizens' pilgrimage visas.

The next much talk about project is the R8.51 billion (£1.4bn) planned expansion of the Grand Mosque, the most sacred site in Islam, home to the Kaaba (the black stone cube built by Ibrahim (Abraham) that Muslims face when they pray), which recently began.

Saudi Justice Minister, Mohammed al-Eissa, said the plans would respect "the sacredness and glory of the location, which calls for the highest care and attention of the servants of Islam and Muslims".

However with the final structure expected to accommodate an extra 1.2 million pilgrims each year, the Grand Mosque is expected to become the largest religious structure in the world.

In the process however, the Islamic Heritage Foundation has revealed that important historical sited risks being destroyed, which include the old Ottoman and Abbasi sections of the Grand Mosque, the house where the Prophet Muhammad was born, and the house where his paternal uncle Hamza grew up.

சூரியன்:
சூரியனுக்குரிய நாள் ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை என்பதால் ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமைகளில் விரதமிருந்து வணங்க வேண்டும். இதனை ஆதிவிரதமென்றும் கூறுவார்கள். சூரியனுக்கு அதிபதி சிவன் என்பதால் சிவன் கோவில்களில் அர்ச்சனை செய்து வழிபடுவதோடு நவக்கிரக சன்னதியை வலம் வந்து சூரிய பகவானை நோக்கி வழிபட வேண்டும்.

"காசினி இருளை நீக்கும் கதிரொளி ஆகியெங்கும்
பூசனை உலகோர் போற்றப் புசிப்போடு சுகத்தை
நல்கும் வாசி ஏழுடைய தேர்மேல் மகாகிரி வலமாய்
வந்த தேசிகா எனை ரட்சிப்பாய் செங்கதிரவனே போற்றி"

என்று தோத்திரம் சொல்லி வணங்க வேண்டும். இவ்வாறு வணங்குவதால் உடற்பிணி கண்களில் ஏற்படும் நோய்கள் நீங்கும். ஜாதகத்தில் கிரக தோஷமுள்ளவர்களும் மற்றும் சூரிய திசை நடப்பவர்களும் ஞாயிறு விரதமிருத்தல் வேண்டும்.
செவ்வாய்:
செவ்வாய் தோஷமுள்ளவர்கள் செவ்வாய் திசை நடப்பவர்கள் இந்த விரதத்தை மேற்கொள்வதால் குறைபாடுகள் நீங்கும். காலையில் அம்மனையும் மாலையில் முருகனையும் வழிபடுவதோடு நவக்கிரகத்தை வலம் வந்து செவ்வாய் கிரகத்தின் முன்னின்று வழிபட வேண்டும்.

என்று தோத்திரம் சொல்லி வணங்கினால் மேற்கூறியபடி தோஷநிவாரணம் ஏற்படுவதோடு அம்மனின் அருள் கிடைக்கும். ரத்த சம்பந்தமான நோய்களும் நீங்கும். வெற்றி கிட்டும். குறிப்பாக இந்த விரதத்தை அனுசரிக்கும் கன்னிப் பெண்கள் மஞ்சள், குங்குமம், வெற்றிலை போன்ற மங்கலப் பொருட்களை சுமங்கலிப் பெண்களுக்கு வழங்க வேண்டும்.
சனீஸ்வரன்:

இங்கே படிக்கும் மாணவர்களின் படிப்பு நின்று போவதற்கு, பொருளாதாரம் ஒரு தடையாக இருந்துவிடக் கூடாது என்பதற்காக அக்கறையோடு பல ஏற்பாடுகளை செய்திருக்கிறார் சரஸ்வதி. அதில் ஒன்று... வசதி, வாய்ப்புகளோடு இருக்கும் பழைய மாணவர்களை சேர்த்துக் கொண்டது. அந்த வகையில் இன்றைய மாணவர்களுக்கு இலவசமாக நோட்டு, புத்தகங்கள் வழங்கி வருகிறார் பழைய மாணவர் செந்தில்.

மெட்ரிக்குலேஷன் பள்ளியிலிருந்து இடம் மாறி இங்கே சேர்ந்திருப்பவர்களில் ஒருவர் சாராதஸ்ரீன். அவருடைய தந்தை சம்சுதீன் நம்மிடம், "எங்க பூர்வீகமே இந்த ஊர்தான். பத்து பதினைஞ்சு வருஷத்துக்கு முன்ன இருந்ததைவிட இப்ப இந்த ஸ்கூல் நல்லாயிருக்கு. அதனாலதான் 'மெட்ரிக்' ஸ்கூல்ல படிச்சுட்டிருந்த எம்பொண்ண, இந்த ஸ்கூல்ல சேர்த்தோம்" என்று சொன்னார்.

Scientists have, for the first time, found water like that found in the Earth's oceans on a comet.
The new evidence strongly suggests that a significant portion of the Earth's seawater arrived
as a result of collisions with ice-packed comets.

Astronomers at the University of Michigan found the comet Hartley 2
carries ice with the same chemical composition as our oceans.

"We were all surprised," said Professor Ted Bergin.
"Life would not exist on Earth without liquid water, so the questions of how
and when the oceans got here is a fundamental one (sic)," he said.
"It's a big puzzle and these new findings are an important piece."

The scientists made the discovery with infrared instruments on the Hershel Space Observatory ,
a telescope which orbits 930,000 miles away from Earth.
They measured the ratio of hydrogen and deuterium - or heavy hydrogen - in the frozen water,
and found it was the same as in seawater.

Six other comets analysed by the observatory in recent years carried ice with
different chemical compositions.
As a result scientists concluded that comets could not have contributed more than
10% of the world's water.

But Hartley 2 was born in a different part of the solar system to the other six comets tested.
"The results show that the amount of material out there that could have contributed to
Earth's oceans is perhaps larger than we thought," said Professor Bergin.
The research is published in the science journal Nature.

Six Million Years of African Savanna

Scientists using chemical isotopes in ancient soil to measure prehistoric tree cover--in effect, shade--have found that grassy, tree-dotted savannas prevailed at most East African sites where human ancestors and their ape relatives evolved during the past six million years.

"We've been able to quantify how much shade was available in the geological past," says University of Utah geochemist Thure Cerling, lead author of a paper titled "Woody cover and hominin environments in the past 6 million years" on the results in this week's issue of the journal Nature.

"It shows there have been open habitats for the last six million years in the environments in East Africa where some of the most significant early human fossils were found.

"Wherever we find human ancestors, we find evidence for open habitats similar to savannas--much more open and savanna-like than forested."

Scientists have spent a century debating the significance of open, savanna landscape in human evolution, including the development of upright walking, increased brain size and tool use.

Part of the problem has been an imprecise definition of "savanna," which has been used to describe "virtually everything between completely open grasslands and anything except a dense forest," Cerling says.

He adds that the most common usage is a fairly open, grassy environment with many scattered trees--a grassland or wooded grassland.

In the study, Cerling and colleagues developed a new way to quantify the openness of tropical landscapes. This is the first method to quantify the amount of canopy cover, the basis for deciding whether something is savanna.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Leakey Foundation funded the study.

"The development of a paleo-shade proxy for soil temperature and woody cover, and its application to ancient fossil sites, reinforces the long-held theory that the roots of human origins are in the open grassland/savanna environments of East Africa," says H. Richard Lane, program director in NSF's Division of Earth Sciences.

Adds Kaye Reed of NSF's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences, "These investigators have done an amazing job of collecting modern comparative isotope and soil temperature samples to compare with paleosol [fossil soil] samples from hominin localities. Their newly developed method for calculating 'paleo-shade' is very innovative."

Cerling does not dispute that East African savannas became more expansive within the past two million years, or that human ancestors and relatives likely spent time in narrow "gallery forests" along river corridors.

But he says the new method shows that grasslands and wooded grasslands--savannas--have prevailed for more than six million years in the cradle of humanity, with tree cover less than about 40 percent at most sites.

By definition, woodland has more than 40 percent tree cover; forest has more than 80 percent tree cover.

"In some periods, it was more bushy, and other times it was less bushy," he says.

"Hardly anything could have been called a dense forest, but we can show some periods where certain environments were consistently more wooded than others.

"We find hominins in both places. How early hominins partitioned their time between 'more open' and 'more closed' habitats is still an open question."

Cerling says that even sparse woody canopy provided hominins with shade, some foods and refuge from predators.

Fossil evidence of hominins dates back 4.3 million years and possibly 6 million years, Cerling says. The new method was used to look for and find savanna up to 7.4 million years ago.

"Currently, many scientists think that before 2 million years ago, the region was forested, and that savanna conditions have been present only for the past 2 million years," Cerling says. "This study shows that during the development of bipedalism [about 4 million years ago] open conditions were present, even predominant."

Cerling conducted the study with biologists Samuel Andanje and David Kimutai Korir of the Kenya Wildlife Service; geologist Michael Bird of James Cook University, Cairns, Australia; University of Utah graduate students William Mace, Anthony Macharia and Christopher Remien; and Jonathan Wynn of the University of South Florida, Naomi Levin of Johns Hopkins University and Jay Quade of the University of Arizona.

The new method was developed by correlating carbon isotope ratios in 3,000 modern soil samples with satellite photos of tree and vegetation cover at 75 tropical sites worldwide--half in Africa--representing closed forest to open grassland.

That allowed scientists to determine the percent of tree and woody shrub cover millions of years ago based on carbon isotope ratios in fossil soils known as paleosols.

"This study is based on the geological axiom that the present is the key to the past," says Cerling. "We assume soils in the past had similar relationships to vegetation as what we observe today."

The researchers collected soil samples at Kenyan and Ethiopian sites and used published data on soil samples collected by others during the past decade at sites throughout the tropics.

Modern soil samples came from national parks and reserves and non-agricultural areas so that carbon isotope ratios reflected natural vegetation.

The ratio of rare carbon-13 to common carbon-12 in decayed plant material in soils reveals the extent to which the landscape was covered by plants that use what is known as the C3 pathway of photosynthesis, versus plants that use C4 photosynthesis.

Trees, shrubs, herbs, forbs and cool-season grasses are C3 plants, which include beans and most vegetables. C4 plants are warm-season or tropical grasses that dominate savannas, and plants called sedges. C4 plants have a higher ratio of carbon-13 than C3 plants.

The isotope composition of fossil soil gives a measure of the total makeup of the ecosystem in terms of how much was canopy versus how much was open landscape, Cerling says.

In a forest, even soil from open gaps shows the C3 signature because of non-woody C3 plants growing there, while on a savanna, soil from under a C3 tree will show the C4 signature because of grasses growing under the tree.

Cerling and colleagues used the new method to analyze fossil soils and infer plant cover back to 7.4 million years ago, a period that includes the time when human ancestors and apes split from a common ancestor.

Their analysis of 1,300 fossil soil samples from sites at or near where human ancestors and their relatives evolved shows that more than 70 percent of the sites had less than 40 percent woody cover, meaning they were wooded grasslands or grasslands. Less than one percent of the samples reflected sites where tree cover exceeded 70 percent.

"Therefore, 'closed' forests (more than 80 percent woody cover) represent a very small fraction of the environments represented by these paleosols," the researchers write.

"We conclude there have been open savannas all the time for which we have hominin fossils in the environments where the fossils were found during the past 4.3 million years--the oldest fossils now accepted as human ancestors," Cerling says.

The researchers also created vegetation chronologies of the Awash Valley of Ethiopia and the Omo-Turkana Basin of Ethiopia and Kenya--home to many fossils of human ancestors, including Ardipithecus, Australopithecus, Paranthropus and our own genus, Homo.

They found that during the past 7.4 million years, woody cover ranged from 75 percent (closed woodlands) down to 5 percent or less (open grasslands), but significant areas with woody cover below 50 percent (savanna woodlands to savanna grasslands) were consistently present.

Fossils of early humans and their ancestors and extinct relatives have been found in both wooded and open environments in East Africa.

Even 4.3-million-year-old Ardipithecus--which lived in the woods, according to its discoverers--had a small component of grasses or other C4 plants in its diet, says Cerling.

Healthy oceans are as important as ecologically rich forest-land and we require marine reserves to preserve the biodiversity of the oceans. While the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary has helped protect turtles and fish stocks in Orissa, the lack of involvement of fisher communities in the sanctuary’s management has created a conflict between livelihoods and conservation. Greenpeace, along with United Artist Association, conducted a comprehensive survey [1] and public hearings [2] with fisher folk around the sanctuary to get their opinions relating to marine conservation approaches and supplementary income generation schemes. The results [3] of the survey show that while fisher folk support conservation, they quite rightly want conservation models to factor in livelihood concerns. The next step is to take these suggestions to the government to ensure that the voice of the fishing community is heard and the recommendations are adopted.
