I am getting a $1500 refund check from government financial aid, scholarships, etc. My question is what can I do with it? Does it solely have to be used for educational purposes for myself? I am thinking about paying off one of my friend’s student loans because he needs the money more than I do. Is this okay? Could I get in trouble for this if anyone found out?

Additional Details:
This refund does NOT come from loans or anything else that needs to be repaid. It is from a Pell grant, an Academic Competitiveness Grant, and a 21st Century Scholarship. If I don’t have anything else to do with it, why shouldn’t I be able to give it to someone in need?

Geeks go through computers pretty fast & frequently upgrade. Are there any established organizations that take “older” computer parts, assemble them into working machines, and donate them to poor kids, etc?

I’d like to volunteer my time/money if so. I’d be particularly interested in groups like this in the Los Angeles area.

For the purposes of this question, let’s say the charity is legitimate and a cause you can care about, like feeding/schooling hungry children.

Part B: How about if your friend gives you the charity’s catalog and lets you choose which gift will be given in your name (like a goat for a poor family, school supplies for poor teens, small business training for impoverished parents)? How do you feel toward that sort of gift?
