There simply is no way to go wrong with Los Amigos Invisibles! This Venezuelan funky acid jazz ensemble delivers some of the most groovy and fun music you can run into these days. Granted it's in Spanish, you only need to have ears in order to enjoy their work.

With "A Typical & Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band", their debut album, they deliver 20 songs loaded with beats that remind of a blend between Santana and Steely Dan. Highlights of the album are: the opening track ("Dame Tu Color"), "Dime", "Nada que decir", "Vuelo Hasta Tus Pies" (along with "Guffi's Mix", which it blends with seamlessly) and the impossible-to-ignore "Boogaloo Pa' Los Panas" (which throws the album into a Salsa loop that is closer to Fania All Stars than anything else).

All through the album you can find bits and pieces that serve as a starting point for some of the Amigos' best known recordings, which would be found in following works after they were discovered by David Byrne who signed them to this label, Luaka Bop.

The Sound I've Been Looking For
What a phenomenal album this is. I found them after hearing one of their tracks on an episode of Entourage, and I haven't stopped playing this album since. Perfect summertime soundtrack music for a bbq, or if you just feel like tapping your feet, bobbing your head and being in a good mood. It's funky, soulful, jazzy, almost latin at times, and super catchy throughout. No need to skip any tracks here, these guys are awesome.

Fantastic comp!
Fantastic comp by the musicians who set the bench mark. Great to hear these tunes on CD as the quality is exellent. This one includes some of the classics such as computer love, ooh baby baby and I want to be your man. My only disappointment is that it didnt include A thin line between love and hate with H-Town.

Great music, a mix of funk and soul thats just be so well put together you will be listening to this again and again.

The funk is over
Reading at the leaflet inside the CD, BNH say America forgot to funk in the 90's. I think now there is no funk at all. BNH were the last hope and now it's all over. There are some excellent groups (I've been an Incognito fan for years and Jamiroquai is on my CD player almost every week), but BNH is what you expect for real funk.

This compilation is the answer. Listen to it and you will find a pure, complex, grooving and marvellous music. I cannot find anything but good songs. I've got some favourites, of course. Some of them make me sing, some make me dance, some make me smile. All of them make me feel optimistic.

My favourite:
- Saturday Nite: great for dance.
- Dream Come True: incredible 7 minute song. Wow wow, yeah yeah.
- Dream On Dreamer: a masterpiece: lyrics, rhythm, arrangements, everything.
- Midnight At The Oasis: extraordinary melody.
- You Are The Universe: the best love declaration.
- Shelter: boys also sing.
- You've Got A Friend: versions don't have to be worse than the original.
- Gimme One Of Those: perfect to make you smile.

I feel delighted listening to this CD. But, after this, BNH is over. And so is funk.

The New Zapp 4 U On Station WZAP!!!!
After three amazing albums starting from 1980's incredibleZapp album Roger and Zapp finaly decided that it was time to back away from P-Funk as it's primary musical influence.On this album Zapp decide to head in two new directions-one of which is more it's own style and a hefty dose of Prince's Minneapolis sound a long the way.While 'The New Zapp 4 U' doesn't shy away from technology (their music had always been based around it) their own funk,along with the fact they were throwing hip-hop scratching into the mix with more regularity really push this music out!All nine of these songs are incredible;in terms of funk "It Doesn't Really Matter" is almost impossible to beat,with it's roll call tribute to Roger's heros (namely James Brown and Stevie Wonder) while "Cas-Ta-Spellome" and "Ja Ready To Rock" actually go deeper into the bass then you'd normally think one could go. Going for the kind of variety Zapp were always so good at presented "Computer Love" is probably the finest example of quiet storm scratch hip-hop (long before LL Cool J did "I Need Love") while Zapp take "I Only Have Eyes For You" into heavy 80's elronically textured dynamics.80's technophobes beware yes but it's my favorite cover of that song!"Ichin' For Your Twitchin'" is probably the most thoroughly Minneapolis type tunes on this recording-it even reference Prince's "Irresistable Bitch" in part of the melody!"Rock 'N' Roll" really does what it says-throws some heavy hard rock guitar riffs into what sounds like either a black mans tribute (or parody)of 80's hair metal,with a funky twist.The bouncy "Radio People" has one of the most clever melodies (as well as some seriously baaad funk backbeats) on any Zapp album.The biggest treat on the album is "Make Me Feel Good",the very best of Zapp's "modern blues" tunes they always included on their albums with it's tasteful synthesizers and irresistable rhythms!A lot of people,even some reviewers will tell you here that there are too many electronic sound effects on this album and the songs are missing.Well that is sure not the case;the songs here far transend whatever (albeit KILLER) electronics Zapp throw at the listener!So if your a Zapp fan or are exploring the very finest of 80's funk or electro funk this is one of the best places to go!

a good album on its own, but as a live album, it's just ok
The music on this album is pretty good, but I have to dock the album a star because it's a live album, yet it has a low-energy vibe. When compared to something like Maceo/Fred/Pee Wee on "Life on Planet Groove" or some of the other JB live recordings from the '80s or '90s, this album just feels... well, it kind of feels like they're acting (as in, like actors reciting lines) instead of jamming and improvising. One can barely hear the crowd, and so I'm not sure the musicians are gaining any energy from the crowd. I sure don't feel it. Also, I've heard Pee Wee do better versions of these songs on other albums, so I give the album a final rating of three stars.

faking the funk
Check that cover, man with a bunch of vultures and a lion this must be one super funky african band. With a total lack of information on anybody involved muscially and some very suspicious song titles, oh how clever the title of song seven is, this cd is some white boys' afro fantasy, fake funk all the way through. No african group has ever played music this stiff and unfunky. If you're looking for the real deal afro beat, you know ya gotta go with Fela, and forget this group of out of work rock musicians playing dress up.

Keziah Jones has a unique technique to play the guitar. He invented it so that people in the streets of Paris could hear him. I love and recommend this CD. His voice is great, the compositions too. I had the chance to see him a few times live when I was living in Europe. Hopefully, he will come to the US soon.

"Let me play among the stars"
An old standard reworked into a funk bomb. James Brown and his J.B.'s take "Fly Me to the Moon" and groove on it. Lyn Collins wails above it all. You gotta hear it to believe it.This album features some classic material. "Think (About it)" is a classic feminist anthem. Who wrote it? The man with the crown, James Brown. The man who sings "It's a Man's World" also wrote another monster for Ms. Collins- found on this album- called "Women's Lib". Anyone who dare call into question the lyrical skills of Mr. Brown hasn't heard this album.Lyn Collins tears it up on this record. Her voice is a marvel to behold. Listen to what she does with "Ain't No Sunshine", it'll drop your jaw to the floor. "Wheel of Life"? Please, this is a smash that never was! Despite some heavy funk, this album is more relaxed than you might imagine. I docked it a star because it feels a bit ballad-heavy on the whole. But don't let that deter you from picking this up- it's worth the cost of the pricey Japanese import.

A Secret of the Southern Hemisphere
It is no new thing to hear artists blending hip-hop with other musical influences, but why did it take so damn long to throw in some samba, and bossa nova? Well Curumin has taken the lead in this department, creating an album of such electic variety, it somehow blends into one seamless goulash of flamenco guitars, obscure samples, reggae bass lines, synth loops, soulful vocals, and some bad-ass grooves to boot. This album's got everything, but it never seems disorienting or forced. Some tracks are for vibin' out, others for getting derty on the dance floor, but all if it is neccessary and enjoyable. Spread the word about this guy. He's gonna be huge. And he deserves it.

Dragged from obscurity by the Rare Groove DJs, the "In Miami" album now commands a three figure sum on the funk collectors circuit. Produced in the US in 1975 by Jamaican King Sporty and utilising disco-funk masters KC & The Sunshine Band mostly on backing duties, it covered all bases with tracks ranging form Funk through soul to a touch of Reggae. Unavailable for almost 30 years, the original set has been augmented by a number of King Sporty tracks from the period, most of which have never previously seen issue.

The New Mastersounds "This is What We Do" Album Review

I hope they keep doing what they do!
"This Is What We Do" is nothing less than a mind-blowing trip into the land of funky jazz. It swings and rocks. The ingredients include a heavy helping of soul and funk with a sprinkling of psychedelia and lounge. As with the art work, much of the music sounds like it was recorded sometime in the sixties and seventies, drawing on likes of the Meters and Howard Roberts. The production is partly responsible for the great vintage sound. The disc blends dazzling arrangements with jaw dropping solos. The melodies are catchy and toe tapping. At times, Eddie Roberts guitar work echoes Mike Bloomfield's playing with the Butterfield Blues Band. While the guitar is hot, it is keyboardist Bob Birch who seems to be in the driver's seat. Jimi Hendrix fans will have to seriously consider the possibility that this quartet recorded a better version of 'Ain't No Telling.' With Sam Bell's assistance, 'The Tin Drum' is a polyrhythmic feast. Karl Denson affirms the importance of these young turks by playing on 'You Got It All.' As if their jammin' live shows weren't enough, this album catapults the New Mastersounds into the forefront of the scene. If "This Is What We Do" is what the New Mastersounds do, I for one hope they keep doing it!

you want weird pasychedelic beats come here every song on here is a banger if you like funkadelic that is the first song has michael hampton going stupid on lead guitar one of his best underrated solos, undisco kidd is hilariuos bernie worrell makes the strangest keyboard noises ever the title is the strangest tune on the album and one of the weirdest p funk songs in history bernie does a 15 minute workout with george and the crew hollering strange souinds legend has it that jessica cleaves was so terrified of the music she ran away shouting this is the devil. lastly is my favorite cut on the album how do you view you another weird p funk track the vocals are strange but it's p funk and bernie does some strange stuff too funkadelic fans should buy this yesterday.

Jamiroquai "Dynamite" Album Review

JAMIROQAUI 'S "DYNAMITE" FEELS MORE LIKE AN ACME EXPLOSION.
Let's admit it everyone, There's a part in all of us that love the 70's. From the music down to the social lifestyle, the 70's was a golden age of sorts in american pop culture. You still hear a lot of the music from that decade, a lot of the artists still have careers from that era, a lot of the movies and television series are showed on a regular basis, and alternate designs of some of the fashions has found its way into our generation. So weather we want to admit or not, the 70's has left a lasting impression on modern culture that hasn't been done by any other decade before or after the 70's ended. As it relates to Jamiroqaui, Jason Kay has made it clear that he's a 70's enthusiast and that's Dynamite's strength and weakness.

As for strengths, This is their most well rounded album since "Traveling Without Moving". There's a steady balance between disco soul, funk, and quiet storm soul. The disco soul that Jamiroqaui have been experimenting with is at its most soulful and best on Dynamite. Not only does their disco soul sound fully realized, but it doesn't feel as synthetic as it did on its predecessor "A funk Odyessy". As the case with the rest of their albums, they do a stellar job at capturing the sound of 70's soul (Perhaps more convincingly than a lot of their other contemporaries who
aim(ed) for the same sound). Where as we could only hear our parents talk about the greatness of Michael Jackson and Motown, we get to experience it with Dynamite.

However, The problem with this album is the problem the plagues the rest of their catalog. UNORGINALITY. Jay Kay wears his influences on his sleeve so heavy until he doesn't have a personality of his own. The joy of listening to artists of the 70's is that they had interesting personalities to go with the innovative music they made (Bob Marley, Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, etc.) While Jay Kay does a excellent job of capturing the essence of Steive and Michael's music, he doesn't show people exactly who he is outside of his Idols. That's always been perhaps the most annoying thing about Jamiroqaui. You would think a band who has a healthy appreciation for 70's r&b would deliver some compelling material that's original. Instead, they always end up sounding like a first rate "Tribute Band" more than a real band with a voice of their own. What's even more frustrating about "Dymanite" is that if "Off the Wall" hadn't exsist, this would be one of R&B's all time greats. but since that album does exsist and it's hailed as a timeless classic, it just make Jay Kay look like the consumate rip off artist that a lot of people have grown to know him as.

I don't mean to be harsh, but a band with this much potential can do a lot better than recycle music cliches from the 70's. If Jay Kay want to stand a chance of being remembered as one of the all time greats, he need to do what artists of the 70's did to cement their legendary status. He need to take styles that were previously popular and transcend it into a style of his own. Then Jay kay and company will really be "Dynamite!" As the title of my review states, this album is like an acme explosion. it's entertaining, but it doesn't feel real.

Hardest Rick James cd to acquire.......
At the time of release (1990), who knew how unique this greatest hits cd would be, compared to future upgrades? As one of a number of "Best Of" or "Greatest Hits Of" cds released on Motown's greatest solo funkster, also released on vinyl at the time, this cd, only checking in with 10 songs, might cause one to say, "Who cares about this one"? "At this point there's a 2 cd anthology availible, covering many more songs". However, before this cd became long gone, prices had soared, even for used copies,to above $50.00! For whatever reason, this is the only cd release on the beloved funkster with the great ballad "Oh, What A Night For Love"! It's not on the other cds! Even the clean vinyl is no match for the sound quality that exudes from the song on cd. We can only trust that Universal will reissue this cd at some point. Even at inflated prices the cd sold pronto!

Funkadelic "Cosmic Slop" Album Review

(3.5 stars) Funkadelic in transition
After America Beats its Young got country and doo-wap out of Clinton's system, it was back to insane, psychedelic epics loaded with all kinds of distorted guitars and the usual streetwise protests. Said streetwise protests are usually the best songs: the dramatic, tightly-wound title song (about a woman forced to prostitution to feed her children, as if any P-Funk fan doesn't know that already), the anti-Vietnam "March to the Witch's Castle", a spooky, militant eulogy for Vietnam vets complete with basso-profundo sermon (though it's a good type of sermon!) and heavy guitars; and "Trash a Go-Go", another prostitution protest. Okay, so Clinton doesn't like prostitution. Neither do I. Objectifying women is wrong, and that's the highest form of it. A whole album of protests can get boring, though, and this record does have quite the sense of humor: the warped blues "No Compute" is simply one of the funniest songs ever, even though it should not be played at Joey's third birthday party if you're trying to avoid an awkward conversation. I also like the groove-based near-instrumental "Nappy Dugout" (essentially "Let's have sex!" repeated for an entire song), other than that percussion, and the Caribbean Temptations crossover "You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure". Then we've got... god, the other three songs. I don't remember a thing about "Can't Stand the Strain", other than that it's the last song on the album; "Let's Make It Last" mixes the "Cosmic Slop" guitar melodrama approach with banal love-song lyrics; "This Broken Heart" is yet another slow, pained love song that's impossible to sit through more than one minute of. This is a critic's favorite, but the fact is Standing on the Verge of Lighting Your Fire (hey, it means the same thing) is a better album

Moves my feet and moves me to tears
This album is the best investment i ever made. I'm a 16 and i play guitar and the solo on maggot brain puts every guitarist i've ever heard to shame,i t moves me to tears every time and eddie hazel has got nowhere near the recognition it deserves. I can't believe more people haven't heard this. And its not just the title track, EVERY song on here gets 5 stars from me. This band puts the supposed heaviest band ever, black sabbath, to shame on super stupid. its super heavy and on top of that you can dance to it and eddie hazel plays another classic solo. enough from me you should get it now, it criminal to not recognize this album for the masterpiece it is.

Funkadelic "Let's Take it to the Stage" Album Review

Funk used to be a bad word.
This is another example of how creative the music was in the 1970's. "Chocolate City" was already doing something. Funkadelic's album was a little more "coarse". With intense guitars, booming bass', pocket drum beats. Slick vocals, they were at thier best here. The album cover almost made me not buy the album. Every song here is a favorite. The opening song "Good To Your Earhole. I love Eddie Hazels guitar solo. Better By The Pound was also a great dance number with "Billy Bass" Nelson on the bass. "No Head" is a funny song about a girl trying to get backstage but the bouncer told her "No head, no backstage pass" (blush). Be My Beach is a slow song but it's a hot one. Bootsy Collins on bass & Lead vocals who sounds a lot like the late Jimi Hendricks. He's sharing vocals with George Clinton, the late Sting Ray (Bass singer) Davis & Calvin Simon, who sounds like Walter from the O'Jays. Title Cut is slammin'. "Get off your ...& Jam" was the song. Eddie Hazel sho nuff plays a hysterical guitar. "I Owe U Something GOod" WIth Garry & Calvin on vocals, they are holding it down, while the guitars sounds like some middle eastern play! Stuff & Thangs is great. Bernie Worrell is holding it down. "The Song IS Familiar" sounds real churchy. Garry Shider again, singing that song with so much soul. "ATmosphere" Bernie takes a stab at the Hammond B3& other keyboards, while George is obviously saying something "common" in the intro. This is one of the best albums that was ever released. RIP Eddie, Ray, & Tiki Fulwood!
THis album concept was actually the stuff going on backstage at the time. Who's going to go on first, equipment being sabatoged...stuff like that. I heard that some times fist fights happened. Funk says....Let's Take It To The Stage......

Herbie Hancock "Monster" Album Review

This is not a Disco album!!
For the record the Disco era pretty much died in late 1979. This album is a very energetic funky dance album. Incredible funky latin tune Saturday Night which features Santana and Sheila E killing it on percussion! A very underrated effort from Herbie. Seems like people only want their artists to play only one style of music. Herbie proves he can do it all effectively.

This tune has such a beautiful and somewhat haunting melody and interesting changes. I've had horn players tell me that piano players are the only ones who can solo on these changes. I don't know about that, but I do know I enjoy playing this tune. That's Ron Carter playing bass on the backing track and now I have a new respect for how much of a monster bassist he is. Those triplet figures of his make me use every ounce of concentration to figure out where "one" is. There is some controversy about this tune and it's author but I'm pretty positive that Wayne Shorter wrote this but often Miles gets credit (like in the Real Book). Whoever wrote it, it's a great tune.

The Bar-Kays singing Son Of Shaft before a live audience of 100,000 people at the Los Angeles Coliseum on August 20, 1972. This event was part of the Wattstax concert festival that year, which was organized by the Memphis, Tennessee Stax Record Label to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Watts riots and black power, pride, culture, tradition and heritage struggle. The party and peaceful atmosphere of Wattstax was seen by some as "the African Americans answer to Woodstock", and the Reverend Jesse Jackson gave the invocation, which included his "I Am - Somebody" poem, which was recited in a call and response with the assembled stadium crowd. There was a film (Wattstax) directed by Mel Stuart which was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Documentary Film in 1974. They began in Memphis, Tennessee as a favorite recording studio session musician group, backing major artists at Stax Records. They were chosen in 1967 by Otis Redding to play as his backing band. On 10 December 1967, Redding, his manager, and band members Jimmy King (b. 1949; guitar), Ronnie Caldwell (b. 1948; organ), Phalon Jones (b. 1949; saxophone), and Carl Cunningham (b. 1949; drums) died in a plane crash in Lake Monona while on their way to a performance in Madison, Wisconsin. Trumpeter Ben Cauley survived the crash and bassist James Alexander (who missed the flight due to returning a rental car) rebuilt the group. The reformed band consisted of Cauley; Alexander; Harvey Henderson, saxophone; Michael Toles, guitar; Ronnie Gorden, organ; Willie Hall, drums and later Larry Dodson, lead vocals. The group backed dozens of major Stax artists on recordings afterwards, including on Isaac Hayes' Hot Buttered Soul album, and changed direction in the 1970s to have a successful funk music career on Mercury Records. They continued to score hits on R&B charts well into the 1980s and have performed all over the world. The band took a hiatus in the late 1980s, but then reformed in 1991 with Alexander as the only remaining original member. Lloyd Smith joined The Bar-Kays in 1973. Dan Aykroyd also covered "Soul Finger" with John Belushi and their band, The Blues Brothers, on one of their albums. James Alexander's son is award-winning rapper and music producer Phalon "Jazze Pha" Alexander, who was named after Phalon Jones. Their songs "Too Hot to Stop" and "Soul Finger" are featured in the 2007 film Superbad. I am a die hard P-funk fan, but this is the weakest link. Not saying it's a bad album, however there were a whole lot of musicians on this joint. I believe that they brought in everybody to get the project done. I love "Let's Play House" and my favorite is "Body Language". "Agony Of Defeat" got a lot of airplay in the DC area. Bootsy is all over the place here. It was time to say "goodbye" to Casablanca. now I heard the remnant of Pfunk & the Rubber band nemed themselves "Sweatband". CD not availiable yet.

I thought the dj couldn't spin the record stright. Who is chuck brown signed to? classical music sells more than gogo. I enven heard gogo been out for 30 years! chuck still lives with his mama! he sells his cassette tapes out the trunk. Overall, gogo just sucks! America also thinks this. Sucks, just like the wizards, the nationals, and the hockey team, if D.C. has one. D.C. isn't even a state. Just stop, please. America has been embarrased enough.

The Brothers Showed They Use To Be The Real Deal
The McCampbell Brothers produced, arranged (vocal arranged), and played multi-instruments (bass, guitar, percussions, flute, trumpet, sax, and even layed down raps) on their 91 release The Real Deal and worked with a highly skilled team; Club Nouveau's Mikki Bleu (toured with Con Funk Shun and The Gap Band), very capable musician Chuckki Booker (Barry White's God Son), Cornelius Mims and producers Darrin & Tone Z. The Real Deal hit a high no. 78 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Charts, and the lead single "Everythang" hit a astonishingly high no. 73 on the R&B singles chart, but this shouldn't reflect the single's credibility. Its sad to see a group that only four years ago had a number one hit ("Roses Are Red") and fall out of the publics eye so quickly.

One of the best American Rock Bands Period!!!
This is one of the best albums in the last thirty years. There are no "filler" songs on this cd and just about every song you hear consistantly on the radio. Its no wonder why Journey's greatest hits has sold 14 million copies since its release, and is one of the highest selling albums of all time!

To those that are negative and talk bad towards extremely popular rock bands such as Foreigner, Journey, and Boston, take your negativity elsewhere.

You cannot argue with success and Journey is one of the best rock bands of all time. According to the RIAA, they have over 20 top 40 hits, sold over 75 million records worldwide, 45 million in the United States alone. They are the 29th best selling band in the U.S. Nearly all of their albums have gone multi-platinum. Most importantly Journey had one of the greatest singers of our time, Steve Perry!

Stellar* -- the hits -- 'Violent', 'Part Of Me', 'Every Girl', 'Undone', 'What You Do', 'All It Takes', 'One More Day' -- the list goes on and on. Their 1999 debut album 'Mix' set New Zealand's radio waves alight, and Stellar* quickly became Sony Music's biggest selling kiwi band. The acclaim wasn't just sales based, with Stellar* securing eight Tui Awards for 'Mix' and its 2001 follow up 'Magic Line'. After 'Magic Line' the band took some time out for expansion -- singer Boh Runga went to live in Los Angeles to hone her skills as a songwriter: "The opportunity came up to base myself in LA. My publisher introduced me to working songwriters over there, people who were writing for artists like Christina Aguilera, Meatloaf and Ricky Martin." "It was an amazing experience being thrown into a situation where I would be in a room with a complete stranger with amazing musical credentials and hold my own. By the end of the day we would normally have a great pop song, or at least the basis of a great pop song." "I got to sit down with Wendy Melvoin (Prince and the Revolution) and record our song in Frank Sinatra's old studio. I wrote 'Miracles' with Kevin Savigar, Rod Stewart's song writer. And I penned 'Whiplash' with Shelly Peiken who's written major hits like Meredith Brooks' 'Bitch' and Christina Aguilera's 'Genie In A Bottle'." Meanwhile, drummer Andrew Maclaren and guitarist Chris Van De Geer both concentrated on building a state-of-the-art recording studio, while simultaneously producing albums for other artists. Bassist Kurt Shanks took time out in Sydney. The band swapped ideas via the internet to keep the songwriting process flowing, with Kurt and Boh returning to NZ for recording stints. Boh admits to some nerves the first time the band got together again. "We've always been our own harshest critics," she says. "I'd written what I truly believe are about the best batch of songs I've every come up with, but didn't know how they'd be received until I sat down and played them to the boys." She needn't have worried. The band then set about unifying the songs into a cohesive album. New contenders arose as the band fed off each other. Asked what listeners should expect, Andrew says "We've stripped it back so the essence of these songs can clearly speak. We've made our strongest album to date." THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM IN THE WORLDDDD!!! LOL
4real I love this album soo much - it's ma favourite in the world, and it's absolutely timeless - u can never get bored of this, u'll always take it out now and again and go omg i cant believ hw good tht is lol. The best song on it is definitly Space Cowboy (an i got mad wen they neva put it on the film 'the return of the space cowboys lol). However, the beginning of 'Scam' is truly magical. The worst licks off this album are 'The Kids' and maybe 'Journey To Arnhemland, which is an instrumental. At 1st I h8ed 'Half the man', but then I loved it cos i find it easy ta sing to lol. 'Manifest Destiny' is amazing too, and I can really relate to it. 'Just another Story' is FANTASTIC!!! I'm a real Jamiroquai fan and out of all their albums this is the best (EOPearth comes 2nd!)!!
If u havent already got it - i strongly reccomend u buy it - u wont regret it it's amazing - even beats ma fav redhotchilipeppers album (BSSM - 4 those fellow fans ;) )

mixed motives on great music
This is music absolutely deserving all of five stars, but it *does* seem superfluous. Two albums, and then a best of? Obviously a marketing, money-making move.

As someone who has both discs, and who loves African dance music in general and the Kutis specifically, I completely agree with Fuchs's review.

However, as I seek to introduce Femi to those not initiated to Afrobeat, this seems like a good choice. It really does have my favorite tracks from each CD, without question.

If you haven't heard or don't own Femi's music, and aren't sure you can handle two CDs, this is a great selection of FANTASTIC music by Femi, the crown prince if Afrobeat music: that blissful fusion of traditional Nigerian Yoruba music, classic African pop music, reggae, jazz, hip-hop, and a large dose of funk.

But if you already have either Shoki Shoki or Fight to Win, forget this and just go buy the other one. It's even better than whichever one you already have!

Lakeside "Your Wish is My Command" Album Review

Superb 80's funk 'n' soul
Lakeside are another one of those rather understated but widely acknowledged giants of 80's funk and soul who were serious .. correction .. very serious MUSICIANS in every respect.

If the reader is unfamiliar with Lakeside then perhaps "Magic Moments" and "Special" may be worthwhile samples to audition, or if cool is more your thing, then perhaps "Urban Man".

Lakeside's "Your wish is my command" is the very first album - err . record .. I ever bought - and what a proud day that was. What a joy to see it digitally remastered onto CD

I first heard the title track "Your wish is my command" on the radio and took notice of the excellent bassline, the superb drums and rhythm and figured I would have no objections to hearing what else was on the album. It must have been a whole week later before I heard "Special" and decided I had heard enough. It was time to buy me a record!

A dilemma shortly ensued. I had enough cash for just one record (hey! I was still at school) and there was a shortlist to choose from which included Skyy. A close friend advised me to sample "Magic moments" at the record shop before I made up my mind. I was blown away and there could only be one winner after that for me.

"Magic Moments" has remained one of my all time 80's favourites and the track upholds the "timeless" reputation of these 80's gems. Amazing sound stage when you use high quality headphones!

"Urban man" and "I wanna hold your hand" were the perfect icing for when it made it sense to give the dancing shoes a break.

And now for the jury ..

Pros: Excellent compositions! Magic Moments, Special, Your Wish is My command are timeless classics that would not be out of place in any serious collectors portfolio.

Cons: CD quite rare and a little on the expensive side. A track or two still to do that "grow on you" thing for me.

Verdict: No regrets! Great album!

These guys are very underratted
I have loved Tavares since I saw them perform Check it out when I was about 9 years old. Anyway I own this Cd and I have to say it contains two smoking slow jams. Let me heal your bruises and my love calls. It also contains my two favorite Mid-tempo recordings by this group. Never had a love like this before, and Madame Butterfly. Tavares are one of the most underrated and highly talented groups to come out in the 70's. One listen to this group and you too will agree, these gentlemen can really sing.

A fairly good CD
It is missing some things that are on his other Greatest Hits ("Lady") and things that *should have* been on this compilation ("No Rhyme, No Reason"). These oversights may not have been such at all and may be strictly because of the publication date.

Other than that, there is enough extra on here to make the purchase price worth the extra few dollars that would be spent buying this as opposed to the other "Greatest Hits" CD-- although for a person who only wants a brief perusal of his hits, the "Greatest Hits" is sufficient. For a fan who wants the better things out of his MANY albums, this is quite a gem.

More Than Just Beauty
I was ecstatic to see the reissue of this wonderful album. It is perhaps the highpoint of the early ACR recordings (together with the sublime 12" version of Flight), and is one of the vital reasons why Factory should be remembered.

The digital mastering is excellent, as with the other Souljazz ACR reissues, and the ethereal delights remain. Lucinda, Crystal and Knife Slits Water retain their senses of beauty, serenity and menace. This was, without doubt, one of the sexiest records Factory ever released. The percussive storm of Skipscada retains its energy and focus. It is surprising just how well this album stands up after almost 25 years.

From the abstract sleeve to the crystal sound, this is the album that defined ACR for me. Their next highpoint was to be Good Together, but that is another story. Listen to this and tingle...

Video A Certain Ratio "Shack Up"

From Soul Jazz (UK): A Certain Ratio was one of the first groups to sign to the legendary Factory Records in Manchester. Whilst many people credit New Order and The Happy Mondays as the groups who brought Dance music into the sound of Manchester (later Madchester!), it is in fact ACR who were there in the beginning. Formed in 1978, the initial line-up comprised Simon Topping (vocals), Martin Moscrop (guitar and trumpet), Peter Terrell (tape loops) and Jeremy Kerr (bass). Their debut seven-inch "All Night Party" was Factory Records fifth release. Soon after this Donald Johnson joined on drums. After a cassette only release "The Graveyard and The Ballroom" containing early versions of future ACR classic tracks like "Do The Du" and "Flight". After this came "Shack Up". This single originally came out in Belgium, on a new Belgium subsiduary, Factory Benelux, and consequently was only available on import. This release became an underground dance record in New York (Billboard chart position 52!). This would lead to their first gigs in New York at places like Danceteria and The Roxy. On their first gig in New York they were supported by a young Madonna! "Shack Up" had originally been recorded by Banbarra in the US and had been a Northern Soul/Funk favourite in the UK. Unlike many bands of this period, ACR were happy to mix the two traditions of their collective Manchester upbringing (Punk and Northern Soul). "Shack Up" manages to be one of Punk's funkiest ever products dancefloor material, sly humour, and Northern post-industrial alienation all in one go! ACR was the first UK band after Punk to record in America. This signified a shift in focus of many UK bands as they started to look towards American music and culture for inspiration. The album "To Each" was recorded in New Jersey in 1980. Produced by Martin Hannett, the sound was a mix of urban US Funk/Dance music rhythms with a cold, isolated Northern sound that made it sound unique. It was here that ACR came into closer contact with their influences. After completing the LP they invited New York group ESG (who they had recently played with) to use their remaining free studio time to record some material. This resulted in the first ESG release, which came out on Factory in the UK and 99 Records in the US. These tracks were the revolutionary "Moody", "UFO" and "You're No Good". It was while in New York that ACR first came across new musical styles. ACR first heard Nu Yorican Latin percussion Street music in Central Park. The following day ACR brought Bongos, Whistles, Congas and a Cuica and didn't look back! By the time of their next album "Sextet", ACR had all the ingredients of their sound in place. "Gum", "Knife Slits Water" "Skipscada" are from this album. At this time ACR would end their live sets with a ten-minute percussion workout (that would become Si Firmo O Grido) and had also taken to wearing Brazilian Football gear on stage! By the time their next album "I'd like To See You Again" was released, Factory Records had in a sense come round to ACR's musical philosophy. Rather than ACR falling in line with Factory's grey-trenchcoat set, the opposite was true. The front cover of "I'd Like To See You Again" showed the band standing in Factory's new pride and joy, the Hacienda night-club. Factory was re-inventing itself as purveyors of Dance culture, with Joy Division changed into the more dance-orientated New Order (after the death of singer Ian Curtis) and The Happy Mondays, Madchester and rave culture still to come. At this time ACR were still moving into new areas such as the arch Disco/Funk of tracks like "Touch". Shortly after this Simon Topping decided to leave the group to study Congas in New York. Tony Quigley was brought in on Saxophone and Andy Connell on keyboards. Tony was also a member of Manchester Jazz/Funk group Kalima, and this led to many ACR members also moonlighting in Kalima. Many new Manchester dance bands sprang up at this time. Simon Topping went on to form T-Coy with Mike Pickering who would later find fame in M-People. Andy Connell would also later find worldwide success with his pop group Swing Out Sister! At this period the once mighty Factory Records was beginning to fall apart. After ACR recording one more record for Factory (Force), Factory closed under the weight of crippling costs from The Hacienda and New Order and Happy Mondays recording costs (The Mondays ran up a bill of a quarter of a million pounds in the Bahamas!). Awesome party music!
Let me tell you...I work in a very diverse office building....a place where everyone likes their own music and not yours. I popped this CD in my disc drive one Saturday morning and people from nearby departments were dancing and singing along with the music! Everyone came together and had such a great time...they recognized the song from the first couple of beats and we danced and sang along....then I popped in Rhino Instant Party Mix - Extra Strength....and WOW....it was more of a party than work. Someone pass the chips and dip! Great CD!!!

Great Collection of Little Beaver songs. The only problem is some tend to get a little repetitive and a little discoey at times. Party Down Pt. 1 is a killer soul funk song that needs to be heard. Pt. 2 is bascially the same while the lead guitar is to faint (I would've suggested a horn). Anyways there are plenty of other hits...Groove On, I Can Dig It Baby (my favorite on the cd) has Jaco Pastorius bass, Joey.

Particle "Launchpad" Album Review

Particle - Electronic, Psych, Progressive Rock
I am not sure how exactly I would categorize Particle. The band appeals to the techno electronica end of the music spectrum, but they also incorporate a healthy dose of progressive rock as well. I would think that they would appeal to a broad spectrum of listeners including fans of older bands like Ozric Tentacles, Hawkwind, or even The Alan Parsons Project. They also have a jam band element to them not totally unlike Umphrey's McGee. This is a very good album of all instrumental music. The musicianship is very good with lots of tasty guitar, keys and drum work to go along with the electronic bubbles and pops. I first discovered them when listening to the internet progressive rock radio show Galiarchives and was really impressed by what I heard. I don't know much more about them and have not had the chance to see them live, but if you are into electronic, psych, space, progressive rock this album is certainly worth a look.

KC and the Sunshine Band "KC and the Sunshine Band" Album Review

a solid greatest hits package geared toward the casual fan
KC & The Sunshine Band created some really great music during those disco days; and this CD helps to bring back many fond memories. As other reviewers have written, there are more comprehensive retrospective CDs out there; but for the casual fan like me this is really great!

The tracks are five star quality! "Get Down Tonight" sports that funky 1970s disco beat with some great sound effects; the drums, percussion and electric guitars come in to carry the bulk of the melody. The band sings to the funky melody to make this a memorable tune! "I'm Your Boogie Man" has some great percussion and H. W. "KC" Casey sings this straight out of the ballpark! Love that disco beat and the backup chorus on "I'm Your Boogie Man," too!

One of the band's greatest hits comes next, "(Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Booty." This ode to dancing and having fun for the sake of having fun has a very catchy melody; and they don't leave any doubt that they're encouraging romantic times as well! "That's The Way (I Like It)" has a great female backup chorus; and "KC" Casey sings this to perfection. This is one song that has a rhythm and beat that you just can't fight! SMILE

"Keep It Comin' Love" starts with some really fine electric guitar; and when they start singing this number takes off like a rocket! That infectiously happy disco beat will catch you yet. "Please Don't Go" gives us a song in a whole new genre; this time the band sings a slower paced number. "KC" Casey and the backup vocalists sing so well about wanting their lover not to leave them; and the percussion enhances the natural beauty of this love ballad.

"Wrap Your Arms Around Me" certainly gets back to that disco flavored style of music; the vocalists harmonize to perfection and I love that beat!

The liner notes include some great artwork; and we get a few black and white photos of the artists, too. There's a good essay about the band as well.

Harry Wayne "KC" Casey and the Sunshine Band certainly had more than just a day or two in the sun; and we are better off for their terrific tunes. It's also good to know that we can still enjoy their music on CD today. If you're a diehard fan, I would suggest that you consider a more thorough retrospective than this particular CD gives. For the casual fan, however, this CD is absolutely awesome!

K.C. and the Sunshine Band happened to be the featured band at Captain Planet's X-Mas Party 2005 in Atlanta. The old guy assembled an energetic band of dancers and solid musicians. Better than the original. ;-)

Percy Hill "Color in Bloom" Album Review

One of the Greatest Albums of All Time
I have listened to a lot of music in my life - that's basically what I do. I first heard this album in an Econo Lodge in New Haven, CT surrounded by new friends and a bottle of whiskey. The joy in hearts when 313 came on is unique and will be with me forever - "Take my life if you are able, I don't want to be here when they come to take me in" sung with pop hooks and a jazz beat, brought tears to my eyes. The rest of the album is just as stunning. Sun Machine is a mastery of controlled power using rythm chords to a manifest pure joy and freedom. Even though this album won the Jammy album of the yeaar in 2000 it is still largely unheard and deserves more attention. The members of PH are pure muscians and people in touch with the rythm of the universe.

High Funk
Short-lived funk trio (featuring Melisa Morgan), courtesy of the brilliant Jacques Fred Petrus and his team of high-quality studio musicians from Italy, at the height of the early '80s smooth R&B-funk groove era. Brilliant '80s R&B mastermind Kashif (Evelyn King, Melba Moore, Kenny G, George Benson) also makes an appearance on 3 songs, producing 2 of the tracks (most notably the silky-smooth dance gem "Hold On"). Despite their catchy hooks and irresistible grooves, some of their productions were a tad repetitive and they didn't really seem to catch on to audiences seeking something fresh, new and unique. However, the team involved maintained their quality and professionalism and the group released 2 albums that are deserving of a place in quality R&B's history. Out of print for many years, it is a great pleasure to see this seemingly forgotten treasure uncovered. It's just a shame that music of this caliber isn't made anymore.

Ebony Rhythm Band "Soul Heart Transplant" Album Review

You'll Need A Heart Transplant
Get ready for some very high energy drumming, tripped out organ riffs and nasty guitar! This set features some of the best psychedelic instrumental cuts I have ever heard. If you like funk, rock, and jazz all rolled up into a batch of instrumentals then this disc is to die for. I must say that this has to be one of my greatest finds and cd purchases this year or in a very long time. A highly valued addition to my collection.

The set starts of with the title track, "Soul Heart Transplant" which is a tripped-out hipster-styled tribute to "The Meters". Very funky and highly syncopated beats. Then the set moves to an instrumental cover of the "Doors" classic "Light My Fire".

This tone is continued on the next couple of tracks with "Vanilla Fudge" cranking up the tripped out factor. Check the ending with that olde horror-movie-style break! classic stuff here!

Then, We get treated to the ultimate psycedelic-acid jazz/rock cut (and the only cut that is not instrumental) "Drugs Ain't Cool". This cut features some of the fastest drumming I have ever heard besides Mahavishnu Orchestra's Billy Cobham and Grand Funk Railroad's drummer. The drummer seems to like to create that (rolling) style of drumming and it works for this set.

The next couple of tracks are of this same tone...Very fast with the same rolling style of drumming only not quite as hard as Drugs Ain't Cool.

Ebony Rhythm slows things down a little on the last 3 cuts and shows that while they were a serious force to reckon with in the downright hard and funky style of playing, They could also play slow stuff as well.
"Can I Call You Baby" is a beautiful track that proves this statement and although soft, The drummer never seems to stop that rolling style of playing which rounds it all off.
"It's Too Late" practically has the same tone and then we get treated to yet another slow,sweet instrumental "Fool Am I". This is the only track that the group uses horns on. Classic!

Hopefully, Funkheads,Head music lovers and Instrumental/Beat/Break heads and psychedelic rock fans can tell by my enthusiasm that this disc is highly valued in my collection. I am willing to bet it will have the same effect on yours. If you like Acid Jazz/Funk groups or beats and breaks then don't hesitate to pick this one up!
