I decided to upgrade us from last year's summer bucket list . . .

and make a printable that I can share with you too!

The thing I like about Bucket Lists is that
they are a visual reminder of things I want to get done.
So often life gets so crazy and time passes by
and I think - Man! I wanted to do such and such.
This way I have a cute checklist of awesome stuff to do.

Fasten your seat belts because today we launch our very first Auto Club Day! This day is presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California. Our guests will have a new way to explore the city by focusing on safe driving. It is never too early to help children ensure that they are playing safely in the community and that they understand those important rules which are very important for them to follow for safe play. Through fun activities and new offerings children will enjoy learning safety tips for the road and driving; here’s some of the activities look forward to:

Sensational Story time: Me On The Map - One of the benefits of being an Auto Club member is the opportunity to learn more about traveling! Today our sensational story times will focus on stories that explore a variety of places around the world and traveling.
Plaza Play: City Streets – Every day Pretend City offers a variety of pedal cars for children to drive through the city, including a AAA tow truck. Today we will have a special focus on traffic sign/light recognition, directions, and map reading.
Smart Art: Transp-“art”-ation - This smart art activity will combine children’s creativity and a bit of engineering! Children will have the opportunity to use a variety of objects to build their very own cars while learning about safe cars.
When I Grow Up Guest: Police Pals - Police officers play a very important role in ensuring that all citizens in the community are adhering to safe driving practices. Children will have fun experiencing such things as monitoring traffic lights, crosswalks and street signs just like a real police officer.

Teacher Appreciation: Sweet Notes

As part of Teacher Appreciation week,

the kids were asked to bring notes to the staff and teachers.

I thought it would be fun to spice the notes up with some candy,

because candy makes any note sweeter :)

I printed the notes on plain white paper,

glued them to a piece of cardstock and glued the candy

to the paper with hot glue.

You could use glue dots, but I didn't have any on hand.

We gave the office staff the "pieces"- because

we all know that they run the school :)

We gave the principal the "extra" note, because he works hard.

And we gave his teacher and classroom instruction aide the mints.

Teacher Appreciation: Spring Bunting and Pinwheel Door

We had Staff Appreciation week this week,

and as the Kinder Room Mom it was my responsibility to

decorate the door on Monday to kick off the week.

We had company in town this past weekend,

so I didn't have time to collect the paper supplies to decorate

the door traditionally.

However, what I did have on hand was gobs and gobs of fabric :)

So I decided to go the fabric bunting route

and then his teacher would have a keepsake to use again.

It was the first time I've made a bunting like this and it was so fun!

I made up a pattern to the size that I wanted -

about 5 inches across at the wide side.

I printed it out on a heavy cardstock and cut it out as a pattern.

Using my rotary cutter and straight edge, I laid the pattern on top of the fabric

scrap/piece and cut 2 pieces of fabric at a time for each triangle of the bunting.

Next I stitched the 2 pieces together on two of the sides, leaving the top open.

To make the letters, I used the font Cafe Rojo at about 170 pt

and made the letters "outline" to save on ink.

Then, print the letters as a mirror image, trace them onto the

paper side of Heat and Bond, adhere to the WRONG SIDE of your fabric,

cut out, and iron onto your bunting triangles.

I used medium sized ric rac and spaced the triangles 1" apart.

Pinned them to the ric rac and ran it through my machine.

Now I want to make a bunting for everything!

I love the idea of including the names of the class on the door.

So, I cut 4" squares of cardstock and made

paper pinwheels and wrote the names of each child on a pinwheel.

JT thanked me for making his teacher a beautiful door,

and it was all worth it :)

I love cupcakes.

I just think they are so dang cute and happy.

Product Review: Animals United on DVD

I had the opportunity to review the movie Animals United: Adventure in Africa.

I jumped on the chance because of JT's never-ending love for anything

animal related - and especially things that involve animals in Africa.

I received the movie the afternoon before we left for our 15 hour road

trip to Oregon, so it was perfect timing because I like to have at

least one new movie the kids haven't seen so we can

keep things fresh and exciting on the long drive.

Well, since we left at 9:00 PM that night,

the kids slept most of the way to Medford - our first stop,

so I didn't get a chance to use it on the first part of the trip.

However, because of some bad weather on the return portion

of our long drive home, we had the perfect chance to use it.

Both kids were totally enthralled with the movie.

And I would have to say that it is JT's favorite movie to watch right now.

He wants to watch it every chance he gets.

It is now available exclusively at Walmart!

Synopsis: The animals in the African savannah are wondering what happened to the water.

Billy the Meerkat and his friend, Socrates the Lion set out in search of water. On their incredible journey to find the water and to save their family and friends, they run into a motley group of animals new to Africa: rooster, polar bear, kangaroo, koala, Tasmanian devil and two turtles, who join them for the adventure. The animals discover that the water is being held for a human luxury resort. So, they decide to unite and call on all creatures large and small to fight back.

Disclosure: I was given a free copy of Animals United to preview and review. I watched it with my children because I wanted something new to watch during a LONG road trip. All the thoughts & opinions are mine.

Spring Pocket Dress Tutorial

We had a fabulous Easter up in Oregon visiting my in-laws.

The weather, which was supposed to rain the entire vacation,

totally cooperated and we had 4 out of 7 sunny days for fun

in the Big Woods where Grandma and Grandpa live.

I got Isabella's dress all cut out and planned before we left,

but never got around to making it.

I had the grand idea that I would take it and my new sewing

machine with me and then I'd have one day to

sew it before Easter Sunday AND I'd have my fabulous

mother-in-law to help me and keep me on the right track.

She did keep me on track and she helped me finish the dress

and JT's bowtie in the nick of time - like 10:30 the night before Easter :)

Which is WAY better than 8:00am Easter morning - before a 9:00 Service,

which is what it would have been if I tried to do it all on my own.

I {LOVE} how it turned out!!!!

And JT looked pretty sharp in his matching bow tie.

However, he informed me that he prefers regular ties.

This is really more of a how-to of how I made the dress, than a tutorial,

but I'll talk you through it and you can let me know if you have any questions.

THIS TUTORIAL over at Shwin&Shwin was the inspiration for my dress.

I liked the idea of pockets and a bubble shaped skirt.

However, I didn't want a sleeveless dress and I wanted it to have a

tie in the back, instead of the pleated belt on the front.

S&S used one of their own patterns for the bodice of the dress.

I didn't want to purchase a pattern, so I dug through my patterns

and found a dress with a similar neck line.

However, it was a pattern for a full dress, so I improvised

and used an altered version of the pattern I already had.

I also wanted it to have a sleeve, so I added a cute little flutter sleeve

because it's an easy peasy sleeve to add - and we're all about easy peasy.

It's basically an oval shape which you fold wrong sides together,

baste, gather and then pin into place.

To add the sleeve, I just pinned it in between the dress and lining

and then sewed the bodice together following the directions at S&S.

I lined the top of the dress with the same fabric as the outside,

that way it if it showed a little bit in any spot, it wouldn't be that noticeable.

My new machine does buttonholes!

I am so freaking excited about it.

However, when my mother-in-law offered to

do them for me while I worked on the bow tie,

I couldn't pass that up!

So I didn't do my own buttonholes this time . . . next time . . .

I opted for three buttons instead of four like S&S,

because I have a thing about threes :)

For the belt/bow I made it in three pieces -

one piece which fit exactly across the front from one side seam to the other

and the two long piece which became the ties.

We tacked the front piece at the side seams and along the bottom of the dress.

The back ties ended up being longer than we wanted,

but there was no time to shorten them before church,

so one day I'll get around to make them a few inches shorter.

Isabella's favorite feature is the pockets :)

A little tip for doing the box pleats,

find the middle of the front of the bodice and mark with a pin,

then find the middle of the skirt and pin to the middle mark of the bodice.

Then, find the middle of each of the "halves" of the bodice and mark with pins,

and again find the middle of the "halves" of the skirt and pin to the middle marks of the

"halves" of the bodice portion of the dress.

Then fold your pleats into each side of the pin for the "half" and pin.

S&S has a great image of a box pleat, but no directions on where to place them.

I hope that helps if you're interested in making a similar dress.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

And of course she needed some cute matching bows,

and pinwheels scream spring to me.

And not to be left out - my favorite little dude!

I used THIS PATTERN by Jocole for his bow tie.

I think the sizing is perfect of JT right now,

I love how stiff it is and I love the elastic option.

Pretend City: Earth Day Celebration

You know we love Pretend City at our house.
In fact, my kids ask at least 2-3 times a week for me to take them there.
In a world where dramatic play isn't valued as vehicle for learning,
it is a MECCA for families and this former educator
that know dramatic play is essential to early child learning.

And boy does Pretend City know how to throw a party!!!!
This Sunday is Pretend City's Earth Day celebration
and just check out what will be going on.

3^rd Annual Earth Day Celebration- Sunday, April 22^nd

Science Spark (9:30 am & 1:30 pm): Spark your child’s interest in science and the environment! Mad Science, the world's leading provider of science enrichment for children, will present two classes to ensure that children of all ages have a chance to experience their environmental education classes.

Bugs! (9:30-10:30am) - This class is recommended for children ages preschool and up to help them learn about natural habitats and the bugs that live within these special environments. Children will study an assortment of bugs, their defenses and their role in our ecosystems. As an added bonus, children can take home ladybugs to add to their very own garden.
Earth Awareness (1:30 – 2:30pm) - Children five years of age and up will enjoy learning about the different factors affecting our Earth today. As their cognitive skills develop, they are better able to understand community functions and begin building an interest in the environmental aspects of the community. This class will build upon this interest as they discover how water can go from dirty to clean through a mock lake.

Nature Works (10:30 am & 12:00 pm):

Busy Bee “Bees”-ness (10:30am): Guerrilla Beekeepers will give us an inside look at honeybees and their importance to our health and our Earth! We will learn all about how honeybees tend to the hive, feed babies, make honeycomb and pollinate 80% of our produce. You’ll even get to see real bees!
A Bug’s Life (2:30pm): Dr. Sue, "The Bug Lady," gives her live bug presentation about insects and arthropods! Her insect program helps dispel myths and misconceptions about bugs and brings some love to our crawly creatures that share our planet with us!

Music and Movement (11:00am):

Come one, come all to a sing-a-long with the Kazoom Band! They will get your child movin’ and groovin’ to their earthly tunes.
Good to Go Game: Beach Clean Up! Your children will enjoy this hands-on cause and effect scenario. They will learn the importance not only of putting trash in the garbage can, but also how important it is to recycle and reduce the amount of trash we create.

The Andrews Family will be moving into the Pretend City Home Exhibit on Earth Day!
From the City of Orange, The Andrews Family live by example, which we hope will inspire Orange County Families. The Andrews make greener lifestyle choices each day such as using homemade non-toxic cleaners for their home, using green personal care products, buying local and living off their own land, utilizing an at home recycling system, and making their purchases at garage sales and thrift stores to promote the importance of reusing products. LDS General Conference: Apostle Cards

About this time last year,

I shared my tradition of serving a big, fancy breakfast
for the Sunday morning session of General Conference,
and I shared with you my recipes for German Pancakes and Buttermilk Syrup.

Yum!
I am drooling just thinking about what we'll
eat this coming weekend when we gather in our jammies
on the couch to listen to the leaders of our church share
inspiration and instruction.

Prophets and Apostle Cards!!!

I made them in 4x6 and 5x7 sizes so that you can
use them for whatever purpose you can think up.
Some uses I came up with:

Flashcards
Print one copy of each, laminate, stick on a ring
and let the kids become familiar with the faces.

Memory
Print two copies of each, laminate, and make a Memory
matching game the kids can play alone or together.

Go Prophet
Print 4 copies of each, laminate, and make
play a GO Fish style game.

I hope you enjoy and can find use for them with your own kids.

Hunger Games Party Ideas

Happy Birthday to me!!!!!!
Who's ready for the Hunger Games movie opening?
I know the movie opens on the the 23rd, but if you're a nut
like me, and you're going to see the Midnight showing,
then your pre- PAR-TAY! will be taking place tomorrow.
I threw a Capitol Feast in honor of the Hunger Games a couple of year ago,
so I wanted to share my menu with you,
and give you some more ideas I've rounded up
to make your Hunger Games pre- PAR-TAY awesome.

If you ask my husband what the Hunger Games is about,
you'll probably get this answer,
"Oh, I'm so hungry, let's play some games."
He thinks he's so funny.
But let's be honest, if you're throwing a party,
it is all about the food :)

At my original Hunger Games Capitol Feast I served:

*soups & stews
specifically clam chowder & corn chowder
in honor of the soups & stews consumed by Katniss

*salad
I picked a yummy one out of the refrigerated section of Costco :)
But you could get fancy and whip something up.

*various breads
Bread is HUGE in the Hunger Games,
so you gotta have your carbs present to REPRESENT!

*CHEESE & grapes
It really isn't a party without a cheese platter.

*hot chocolate & rolls
Turn on that Cocoa Latte machine,
grab a bag of rolls of Costco,
and let your guests go to town.

*ORANGE JUICE
Not only does this beverage remind me of my
darling Grandpa Meyer, but it was the
first food I thought of when I thought the Hunger Games.
Can you imagine remembering what it was like
to taste OJ for the first time?
Yummy!

And the piece de resistance . . . . . .

They look really stunning on a candlelit table.

They say it's your birthday, it's my birthday too!!!!
Well, it will be tomorrow!!!!
We went out to dinner to celebrate this past weekend,
because I like to celebrate a whole week :)
I loved my shrimp taco salad from El Far.
I'm still dreaming about it . . . .

{Lucky} Stuff: You've Been Pinched! Printable

Last night I taught the 12 and 13 year olds to make cake pops.
While we were waiting for the little yummies to set up,
we made this cute gift for the girls to give to someone
special in their life.

The girls loved them!
I hunted high and low for gold coins,
but I couldn't find any.
So, we used Rolos - which are yummier in my opinion
because they have caramel inside.

I made the topper using Jacque's leprechaun
and Rachel's chevron paper.
Then printed it 4x6 at Costco,
folded it in half and stapled it to the top
of snack sized ziploc bag.
