How to Power Up an ATX PSU without a Motherboard

Today I have a quickie guide on powering up a power supply without the aid of a motherboard. This guide is aimed at the user who needs just a little more power to get that peltier working or to get more fans in your box. A 250W may not be enough for those chores, so here we have a solution. Get another PSU just to power those specific components.

As most of you know, motherboards usually come with just one ATX plug. How that works is, the two pins on the row of your motherboard is usually connected by a momentary switch. To put it in layman's terms, the switch you press in front of your case causes a 'jump' in those two pins which in turn tells the power supply to turn on.

The above picture is the general design of an ATX plug. The green box and black box are the exact locations on the plug we will be working on. The green (Pin 14) is designated as the power on line, while the black (Pin 13) is just a ground line.

To keep a PSU alive, a momentary switch is not needed since you will not be going through a motherboard. A permanent switch is needed though, to keep it powered as long as needed. To do this, you will need the following components:

SPST (single pole, single throw) Switch

ATX Compliant Power Supply

That's it! all you need now is a switch that can stay on all the time and the PSU will be continuously powered. Some people have mentioned that just taking a wire and connecting the two points on the plug will do it. To turn off the unit, just hit the switch on the back of the PSU. Well, what happens if you don't have a switch on your PSU? That's where the SPST switch comes in handy.

Here are the two wires that come out from the SPST switch, you don't really have to worry about which goes where since the switch will just act as a pass through. Either wire can be placed within the green or black connector on the ATX plug.

You can solder those points into those plugs for a more permanent solution. I just placed it in position for the time being to make sure everything was working.

To test if the little mod worked, I attached a small heatsink with a molex connected fan to the power supply. I turned the power supply switch to the on position after attaching my SPST switch. The SPST switch will be used to power on/off the unit from now on. It is fortunate that you have both switches to utilize, but if you are stuck without a master on/off switch on your PSU, the SPST can be used instead.

And there you have it, Voila!!! we have our little heatsink spinning up just fine. Make sure you power down your PSU when you plug in more devices, to prevent any sparks and failures.

How to install Android 4.0.3 ICS to Motorola XOOM?

Download the update click
Store that zip file on flash drive that is attached to your device and apply it through stock recovery.

In order to penetrate in XOOM recovery mode, reboot the device and after few seconds when the Motorola logo will start appearing press the volume down button. By this, the Android recovery will start appearing on the top right hand corner & then press volume up to select it. Now the only thing which will appear is Android logo and you can press simultaneously both volume up and down button to dismiss this menu.

Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi Gets Ice Cream Sandwich

Finally Motorola has started rolling out Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich to Motorola Xoom owners in the U.S., but only those who have the Wi-Fi version of the device.

This will bring a redesigned app launcher, a better web browser, resizable widgets and many other goodies to the tablet.

As for the 3G version of the tablet, Motorola said it will get the update as well, but did not give an exact date.

The update will be rolling out in “phases over the course of a few weeks,” so don’t be perturbed if your Xoom still hasn’t been updated.

Motorola is also slated to update its Droid Razr with Ice Cream Sandwich in early 2012.

Rockstar Games Delays Max Payne 3 Release Until May

Eager gamers will have to wait until May before getting their hands on the new dark and gritty third-shooter game Max Payne 3. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game will hit U.S. shelves on May 15 and May 18 in Europe. Fans will have to wait even longer for the PC version that lets out on May 29 in the U.S. and on June 1 in Europe.

Video gamers and blogs speculate that the delayed release is an effort to avoid sharing the spotlight with highly anticipated Mass Effect 3, to be released on March 6, around the time Max Payne 3 was set to release originally.

On Wednesday, Rockstar Games released a preview video for Max Payne 3, which received rave reviews from gamers on Twitter. The three-minute video shows off the game’s advanced design and technological features. The developers have said this game will be very realistic, incorporating powerful storytelling and “precise and fluid gunplay.”

The game follows Max Payne, an ex-New York detective onto the dangerous streets of São Paulo, Brazil.

The preview video shows prospective gamers what it would be like to play the hero in Max Payne 3 with first-person precision targeting capabilities while Max’s full body is still visible. The picture is clear and motions are fluid — Max’s upper body can shift while he shoots and runs away from enemies.

Gun fire is quick and powerful enough to send enemies flying and their blood spewing. The game takes into account the weight of the guns — Max’s balance shifts when he holds a pistol in one hand and a rifle in the other. Another Design & Technology Series preview video is expected to release soon.

The game is available for pre-order online until April 2 while supplies last.

Google Collected 4.5 Million Anti-SOPA Signatures Yesterday

Google generally gets in hot water when it is thought to be abusing its pole position in the search industry. But it’s no use denying that while some moves skirt the edges of abusing monopoly, others are more than welcome. During natural disasters, for instance, Google has provided helpful links and resources for people who want to donate or volunteer. And their logo doodles pay homage to personages and events many people would otherwise have overlooked.

Today must rank among the best applications of their choice placement: a link on the Google homepage and thousands of shares have produced a mind-blowing 4.5 million signatures on their anti-SOPA petition.

When I wrote Kill Switch a few months ago, there were some petitions linked to that had tens of thousands at the time and now as many as 150,000 (the Whitehouse.gov one got just over 100,000). And the petition at Avaaz is almost to 1.5 million. The grassroots opposition to these bills has been immense, more so in fact than other rather terrifying bills like NDAA, perhaps on account of the fact that SOPA and PIPA are directly aimed at internet freedoms.

Regardless, 4.5 million is a hell of a lot, and in one day as well. I just wrote earlier today how we need to improve the way that the internet and our governing authorities interact, but things like this are certainly among the best applications of existing online methods. The numbers may, of course, be considered somewhat inflated and less salient than 4.5 million written signatures complete with social security number and voter address, but that’s not really the point. 4.5 million people took the time to go to this page, inform themselves, fill out the pertinent information to register their discontent.

It was also shared quite widely, as many of our readers will surely be able to attest; according to Facebook’s stats, it has been shared over 344,000 times, Google shows over 125,000 shares on Google+, and surely a few of those 2.4 million #SOPA, #stopSOPA, etc. tweets pointed to Google’s petition as well.

One In Ten South Koreans Now Owns A Samsung Galaxy S II

It’s not really news to say that the Galaxy S II is a hit, but it has actually become a mega hit in South Korea. According to maker Samsung, the Android handset has been sold a whopping 5 million times in its domestic market since release at the end of April 2011. In other words, a little more than 10% of the country’s entire population (48 million people) are now proud owners of the phone.

It’s the first cell phone that has reached this milestone in mobile-crazy South Korea, according to Japanese business daily The Nikkei. The paper also says that one out of four South Korean smartphones users owns a Galaxy S II (sounds like feature phones don’t play a big role in that country anymore).

In 2011, Samsung commanded a 53% market share in South Korea’s smartphone industry.

The company recently decided not to take legal action against its fiercest competitor, Apple, in its home market – despite being in a patent war with the iPhone maker the whole world over. It looks like Samsung can afford it.
