This is one of the series that has piqued my interest so far. While it would be easy to dismiss as just another incarnation of the beautiful-alien-girl-falls-for-socially-inept-guy plot that’s been done a million times before, there seem to be some legitimate potential for a sci-fi story. Of course the slick animation and pretty girls don’t hurt either… Unless it proves to be an utter waste of time I’ll be more than happy to stick around and see what all Erisu has to offer~

Occult Academy
[世紀末オカルト学院]
One of three horror-type shows that emerged this season, Occult Academy is the one that appeals most to me. I’ve only watched the first episode but I’ve already come to like the main character Maya (both in personality and design). The premise so far is pretty intriguing, and I’m looking forward to finding out more about the whole time travel element as it ties in to the world of the occult.

One reviewer on AnimeNewsNetwork described this show as being a somewhere in between Kodomo no Jikan and Hanamaru Kindergarten – not as ecchi as KnJ, but more adult than Hanamaru. While I’m inclined to agree, I feel like it definitely leans more towards the Kojikan… I have to admit that it’s pretty cute, but the second episode almost lost me with the pee jokes We’ll see if this one can stay funny without becoming just another source of lolicon fodder.

K-ON!!
[けいおん!!]
Okay, so this is technically a spring release, but it’s still airing and we’ve just now gotten around to watching it >_> Evilbento and I both love the moe!blob goodness that was the first season of K-ON! so it’s pretty much a given that we’ll enjoy the second. It’s not exactly breaking any new ground, but then again it doesn’t have to as long as it keeps serving up the cute antics of the light music club~

It seems like there are a lot of new series that have potential… So I’m keeping my hopes up for some winners here. Also on my to-watch list are High School of the Dead and Shiki, the other two horror-themed works this season. I’ll let you all know what I think once I watch them~

Ball joint dolls are not for everyone. For every person that enjoys them, there are at least 2 or 3 other people who are confused, frightened, or just generally disturbed by their existence. And who could blame them? BJDs are fragile, expensive, and sometimes genuinely scary-looking. Despite all this, their popularity in the US has been steadily increasing over the past decade with no sign of slowing down. Why? What is it that makes these chunks of resin so appealing? The answer differs for every owner…

Personally, I love ball joint dolls. That said, I am not your typical BJD fanatic; I don’t keep a blog for my doll, I don’t document every inch of him via photo diary, and I definitely don’t write weird fan fiction about his numerous (and inherently homosexual) romantic endeavors. Although sometimes downright creepy, I have no real issues with those activities or the people who enjoy them. It’s just that I don’t feel any more compelled to give “life” to my doll than I do to my other toys and figures. Sure, he has a name and even a bit of a back story, but when it comes down to it, I’m into dolls for the aesthetics, not the spirituality. But enough about me – you want to see the doll!

LUTS CP Delf Yder

This is Niiro, a white skin Yder from Delf/Cerberus Project. Acquired in 2005 through a shopping service, he was purchased using what was left in my savings account after paying for my first car. My mom thought I was crazy, but I had been admiring these dolls from afar for a number of years and had thoroughly researched my options. Even now, there are very few boy sculpts that even register on my awesome doll radar.

FairyLand pukipuki Madeleine

Many doll owners are driven by some mysterious force of nature to own 5, 10, even 20 of these little creatures! I can’t imagine amassing a family that large, at least not without proper insurance… Regardless, one thing’s for sure – the world of ball joint dolls is an addictive one with a lot more to offer than simple snapshots of pretty resin faces.

L is in for a little surprise…

I made some chocolate chip cookies… and L was quite interested!!! They’re made with olive oil instead of butter or margarine, which makes them seem almost healthy~

Olive Oil Chocolate Chip Cookies
from Slice of Feist

2 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 or 2 tablespoons of milk (or rice milk)
1 cup chocolate chips

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl and set aside.

2. Combine sugars, vanilla, and olive oil. Beat in the eggs one a time. Gradually beat in the flour mixture, then add in a tablespoon of milk to make the dough a bit firmer, maybe another tablespoon if the dough is too dry. Fold in chocolate chips.

3. Roll the dough into balls with your hands and place on a greased and/or lined baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, until lightly golden and set. These over-bake quickly, so it’s better to take them out a bit early if you’re unsure. Allow to cool for a bit on the baking sheet, then move to another surface to finish cooling.

EVENT: Izumicon 2009

Last year Funny Bento attended Izumicon as an artist with our custom plushies, buttons, and lolita accessories. This time marked our first endeavor as a full blown vendor in the Dealer’s Room. It was a hectic weekend, and unfortunately we didn’t get to see much of the con besides our booth (I know I was in the vendor room from open to close on Saturday, a total of 9 hours), but we still managed to snap some pictures of the awesome cosplayers and lolitas who passed by during the weekend. FRIDAY:

Evilbento and Sinisterbug had other obligations Friday morning, so that meant that I ended up enlisting my mother to make the drive to OKC with me to set up. It was a relatively uneventful 2.5 hour drive, and we arrived with just enough time to get the booth ready for the opening of the Dealer’s Room

Once the rest of the crew arrived, my mom took off back to Wichita and I went to go check into our room and change. You can see my coordinate in the lame-o pics above lol. I looked like a mess, but it was better than jeans and a t-shirt I suppose The rest of the evening was dedicated to staffing our table. It was a rather slow day in terms of business, but there were already lots of cool cosplayers wandering around~

The Dealer’s Room closed for the night around 8:00 PM. After securing our area, it was time to find food!! We all went and grabbed Greek food from this awesome hole-in-the-wall restaurant called Acropolis. Delicious piles of food make for a happy Funny Bento team ;D In addition, like any self-respecting bunch of 21+ con attendees, we hit up the hotel bar XD

SATURDAY:

Saturday was waaay more action-packed in terms of business. We managed to work out a strategy for escorting potential customers to the restrooms in order to try on clothing which really helped out in the long run – next con, we’ll definitely try for a set-up that allows for a dressing room area~ All of our customers were a blast to talk with, and time really flew by!

These pics count for just a few of the awesome cosplayers (and of course Funny Bento fashionistas!) that were present. Sinisterbug was really nice and humored me by chasing down various people for pics XD She and Evilbento had also purchased Operation from the local Walmart that morning, so we had child-friendly surgery fun to keep us occupied in between crowds of people~

I actually spent 9 hours straight in the Dealer’s Room… I barely even noticed XD;;; It was regrettable that none of us could really go to any of the Izumicon programming… Judging by the schedule, it seemed like there were all kinds of fun things to do this year!

The little bitty Cloud you see pictured above was definitely one of my cosplay highlights. He looked totally bad ass with those shades, and he had all the ladies wrapped around his little finger!! His mini-sword really sealed the deal for me XD

Random Observation: one of the best things about conventions is getting to people watch. Amidst all of the cosplay pics, you’ll notice that there are two pics of a random guy. Why, you ask? Because his sweater exuded such an epically weird vibe, we couldn’t resist recording it for posterity. We’re not even judging the guy himself – it was chilly outside, so I’m sure he was feeling pretty good lol. But really… THAT SWEATER IS SUCH SERIOUS BUSINESS WHAT IS EVEN GOING ON OMG.

Domino’s pizza served as our dinner, and we pretty much destroyed it in seconds lol. There was also some *cough* consumption *cough* of beverages of a *cough* alcoholic nature. Don’t get ahead of yourself and think we’re a bunch of wild party otaku though – we all fell asleep watching Cats 101 on Animal Planet XD

SUNDAY:

That’s Evilbento and me, enjoying some complimentary coffee. THANK YOU HOTEL GODS FOR THE COMPLIMENTARY COFFEE!!!

His hair didn’t seem to lose any mass over the night lol. We were all a little tired Sunday morning, and I sounded like I had the plague (coughing up a storm), but for some reason that didn’t stop people from coming by to see us XD No full body snaps of me for Sunday, I was too busy and didn’t get a chance lol.

Sunday was pretty much “Loliday”, since most of the big lolita events were planned for the morning/afternoon. The tea party went from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, so we started to see a lot of frilly girlies starting shortly there after. I really wish I could’ve attended, but I didn’t want to ditch my Funny Bento army Maybe next year!!

The Dealer’s Room closed it’s doors for the year around 3:00 PM, so after some ultra last minute sales, we packed up to head home. Overall, even though we didn’t get to see much of the con, all three of us had a lot of fun just hanging out Thanks everyone for a great convention!! We hope to see you again next year~
