The Holiday Season and Mike's Famous Christmas Party

It's kind of fun to work at the place that has the best Christmas party every year. Mike Lembo, our fearless leader, has developed quite a tradition of throwing a great party, usually 2 weeks before Xmas day. Fabulous ( and I do mean amazing) eggplant parmesan is the star of the show. That and well made sauce, meatballs, sausage, it's an italian food lovefest. Wine and deserts are brought, young and old co-mingle and share conversation, music and great fireplaces. Afterwards, a drive through the set-up at Winterhaven (google it - it's awesome) and a stiff eggnog is the recipe for an almost perfect day. Would only be better if Johnny Depp was waiting at home, doing the laundry.......

Thanksgiving – From Funzalo Records – some thoughts….

Thanksgiving – holiday to fill you up with calories you need for energy before ‘BLACK FRIDAY’ or time to spend with friends, family, or beloved pets? I tend to go for the latter, but some look forward to that insane 4AM shopping spree. To me, the idea of crawling out of that pocket of warmth you have formed under your covers, while the sun isn’t even out yet, to go stand in line with a bunch of cranky, tired, voracious for stuff consumers just doesn’t sound like any fun at all. I am also a big believer in shopping local for almost everything these days. It supports your neighbors, our country, and cuts down on carbon footprints. And the gifts tend to be much more unique. I also took some time to find out what some of the Funzalo Artists are up to for their holiday…….

Mel from SIRSY will be spending her holiday with her family. She has created a fabulous chocolate pecan pie (YUM – recipe please!!) and her mother makes a special vegetarian stuffing for her. She and Rich have also recorded a fabulous version of Silent Night, which we’ll make available to everyone very soon.

Ashley Raines, one of our newest signings, apparently knows his way around a kitchen (and what to do with a really hot chili pepper) will be cooking an enormous turkey for his small family. And then he plans to enjoy turkey sandwiches for a week…..

Brian Lopez will be spending his Thanksgiving in Europe on tour – so he can probably forget the turkey. But he’s in Europe so we have no sympathy at all.

Nicole, who handles our publishing arm, will be with her family and braving the terrors of BLACK FRIDAY!

Mike Lembo, our fearless leader says we are getting scewed by the gov’t like they fucked the indians that fed them and gave us thanksgiving……..
*What would it have been if the indians scalped the pilgrims ?
*And the pilgrims are now on wall street and gov’t people!
*That would be more real and more fun!!

Sunday, November 6, I went to Agua Caliente, a large pond and park formed around a natural warm spring. I usually go there for peace and quiet, and to check on this particular duck…..but that’s a different story. As I sat reading my Joyce Carol Oates short stories, and praying for the immediate destruction of a couple overly-loud boys throwing rocks at the waterfowl, the most lovely voices crept into my hearing range. Looking over to my left, two girls (obviously U of A students) had pulled out acoustic guitars and were singing and playing by the edge of the water. Half-listening, I noted the similarity in quality to the songs that peppered the movie Juno. For perhaps the billionth time in my life, I was struck by my love of melody. A simple tune is often better than chocolate, great wine or anything. After an hour of so of listening, I walked over, congratulated them on their playing and handed them a bunch of Brian Lopez free download cards. (yes, this is kind of like the message of the Orphan Annie Ring in A Christmas Story. Get over it.)

If you had picked up Golden without hearing one of Tony Furtado's previous 14 albums you'd never guess that originally he was a banjo prodigy. After winning the Nation Bluegrass Banjo competition at 19 he was on his way towards the bluegrass bus and the summer festival circuit season when he made a musical left turn into blues, learning slide guitar and lap steel. Then he detoured into songwriting. For his 15th album Tony Furtado serves up a rock/pop/folk/ soufflé that combines songwriting, picking, and vocals into one tasty entree. Co-producer and engineer Rob Stroup recorded Golden at his 8-Ball Studio, which is located near Furtado's home in Portland Oregon. Local musicians including Paul Brainard on pedal steel, Scott Law on mandolin, Tye North on bass, and Anders Bergstrom on drums give the album a relaxed "down home" quality. The playing is more about making the ensemble mesh than stringing together hot licks. The results are pretty much Golden.
