We got an update from Emmie's new owners. They say she sits and sleeps with her grandma all day on the ottoman, and is very happy when her owners get home.

Sometimes when Emmie is sleeping, she snores! Congratulations to Emmie and her new family!

Update on Storm

We got an update from Storm's adopter:

"Storm is doing great! He is settled in now and is spoiled! He goes to doggy day camp once a week, as well as his favorite dog park on the weekends where he has lots of husky friends. He gets along great with my boyfriend's dogs too. I'm so grateful to your rescue. I couldn't ask for a better dog! I attached some of my favorite pics of Storm."

Lucky is Doing Great!

We got a 1 year update on Lucky. Here is what his mom had to say:

It's so nice of you to check in on Lucky. Crazy to think that he's been with us for a year already, wow! We drove down to North Carolina to visit Rich's mom this weekend, so right now our baby is still at the kennel and will be home this afternoon.

He's doing great - a little more relaxed (as much as can be expected from a husky) and definitely into a routine, which is good for all of us. He's still having trouble with greeting people and also other dogs, gets a little too excited. He doesn't seem to understand that he should approach other dogs by sniffing their butts and goes straight for their noses. I'm sure you know how well that can go over LOL! He and Rich have a new hobby though - bike riding! We got him a Walky-dog bike leash and harness, and the two of them are the hit of the neighborhood on the weekends. They both get great exercise and they can do a little "boy bonding". I'm trying to get a good picture of this to send you.

As you can see, this big white jerk has definitely made a place for himself in our home and our hearts and we can't imagine not having him. Thank you again for bringing him to us!

It looks and sounds like he has the perfect home. Congratulations Lucky and family!

Matty Versus Godzilla!

Matty's mom got this awesome stuffed dinosaur for $5! It has triple stitched seams and there are 3 layers of fabric. As you can see, Matty is enjoying it very much!

Brody Was Adopted!

Brody was adopted on Sunday, July 12! Here is the update his former foster parents gave a few days later:

I spoke with Carol last night regarding Brody's status at his new home. They are extremely happy with him so far. They said that he was a little nervous and constantly followed them around to make sure they were always in his sight. But he has been a complete sweetheart since he's been there. Carol said that Koda, their 5 yr old female husky, is already starting to play with him and has him pinned on his back. Brody has not shown any aggression whatsoever. For Koda to do this is a big deal; Carol told us that she doesn't seem to know quite how to play with other dogs. Maybe Brody can teach her!

They also said on Sunday while we were there that they probably wouldn't let him sleep in the bed with them. Yesterday when we spoke, she admitted that they felt bad for him being nervous and a little anxious, so they let him sleep in the bed with them. :) They learned rather quickly just how graceful he is when he gets in and out!

Overall, they said they have completely fallen in love with him and are really happy with the choice that they made. Finally, I think, after lots of traveling around for him, Brody seems to have found his final home. We'll update again as we learn more.

Memorial to Gidget

On June 22nd, 2009, 3 year old Gidget was hit by a car after she escaped from her collar while on a walk. Gidget's mom was with her, and she was rushed to an emergency hospital where staff performed CPR and worked on Gidget for 45 minutes, but poor Gidget did not survive. Gidget's parents, Michele and Manny, have created a memorial for Gidget. Please feel free to leave them some words of comfort, it will mean a lot to them. Gidget had a wonderful life with her family. She went to work with Michelle most days, they took her hiking, she went to the dog park a lot. She even took over her own couch at home and made it her own bed. Our hearts and prayers go out to Michelle, Manny and their family, all of whom loved Gidget. Rest in peace Gidget. All dogs should be as lucky to be as loved as you were.

Gidget

Gidget's family reports:

we are doing well. Gidget is happy healthy and so attached to mommy. She still comes to work with me every day and still going to the dog park every day. So friendly with other dogs people and kids. Oh and very smart she learned the word walk so we thought we'd start spelling it and now she understands that too. We cant wait for the hike this year she misses her husky buddies. She hates doggie beds so now she owns one of our leather couches

We got the yearly update on Lucie. Here is what her owner had to say:

"We spoil her rotten - her big treat of the day is when we finish eating we give her the plate to lick (even if there's absolutely nothing on it, she waits for it). We eat in the living room on trays; she patiently waits watching us eat. But when she sees you're done eating, she'll give it a few minutes, then if you don't get up to bring the plate into the kitchen, she starts VERY vocally complaining that "we're doin' it wrong"! It's really pretty hilarious. Then the minute you get up to bring the plate out, she goes flying out to the kitchen at 90 mph!"

Stoli and Her New Brother Zack

Happy One Year Anniversary Bandit!

In February, it was the one year anniversary of Bandit being in his new home! Here is what his mom says:

"Bandit just had his one year checkup with the vet. She was really pleased with his weight gain and muscles, and his coat looks so much better than last winter. He does have some teeth issues, it looks like he has cracks off both of his front canines. She did say they generally don't pull those unless they really need to because the roots are so long so we'll just keep an eye on them.

He is still sleeping with us, and is pretty demanding about bedtime. He can totally go from full tilt crazy to passed out sleepy boy in only a matter of minutes. He and the cats are just hilarious, especially Sammy. They spend a lot of time together and often both cats will sleep with Bandit on our bed in the evenings.

He loves Sky. We're still so amazed at how perfectly their personalities mesh. She is a bit of a diva and he's just so easy going and sweet. He tries to get her to play, but never pushes her too hard. When she does play with him, he's just soooo excited. And, when she can't play he always wants to lay close to her. They provide so much comfort to each other it's just adorable. At daycare they've started calling them the Two Headed Slay.

His fear of men seems to be a lot less most of the time. At Christmas we were gone for the day and our friend Matt came over to let them out. Everyone who normally helps out with them is a girl, so I was a little concerned about how he'd react. He has met Bandit a few times with no issue, but I was with him each time. Matt said he barked every minute he was here, even though he let Matt pet him, give him treats, and he licked Matt's hands! He said it was totally hilarious, because he was trying so hard to not frighten Bandit and to put him at ease, and he said the barking was so half hearted after a while but he just kept going :)

I've attached a few photos of the handsome boy. The one of him laying on the floor with his food bowl is at the end of a daycare day...he's so tired he lays down to eat his dinner! The shot with Sky is just from yesterday. He just wants to be close to her. He's quite a little charmer, and manages to make us laugh every day, gives kisses to everyone, and just generally makes our house complete. We are so happy to be his people.")

Update on Stoli and Her Brother Zack

Adorable little Stoli was adopted by a family that lives near her foster home. Her foster mom talks to Stoli's new dad every day. Here is what Stoli's foster mom had to say:

"I talk to Jose every day and he just loves her. She's had a couple of accidents in the house but Jose has figured out what to do. He says the first couple of nights they both slept on the bed without any problems but now they both run to the crate and sleep in it together. I think she has found her furever home."

You can see just how closely these two have bonded. Here they are sharing a crate AND food!

Congratulations to Stoli and her new family, it looks like this match was made in heaven!

Update on Zack

Chester (Now Stoney)

Chester has been renamed Stoney after Stone Harbor. He really enjoys going on morning walks with his family, then daily walks on the trail on his 15 foot leash to sniff things in the forest and run around.

Stoney's favorite pastime is watching tv with his family, and his favorite shows are Eight Below and the Dog Whisperer.

He gets to go to doggie day care to learn how to play with other dogs and is doing great.

Matty was adopted!

We apologize for not giving an update on Matty sooner. Summer is such a busy time with so many dogs that need help. But Matty has made a full recovery from his surgery and was adopted by a family that volunteers for Harnessed to Hope!

Here is Matty in his new back yard with his new sister Sassy. You can see that Matty has no trouble sitting up with only three legs!

Here are some photos of Matty only a few weeks after his surgery, after the surgical staples were removed.

Matty hardly has a scar at all. The specialist that did the surgery said he may not have a scar, since the surgery was done when he was so young.

Matty is doing great in his new home.

He has regular playdates with a neighbor's black Lab puppy named Cody. They love to wrestle, and Matty keeps up just fine on three legs!

Matty, his foster home, and his adoptive home want to thank everyone who made donations for Matty's surgery, and helped make it possible to get Matty the medical care he needed and give him a new leash on life.

Update on Sasha!

We got an email from Sasha's new family, along with some great photos!

"It's been some time since we've talked and I just wanted to send you a quick update on Sasha and Misha. It's been a little over 2 months now since we adopted Sasha and so far everything is going GREAT!! Her and Misha are attached at the hip and one can't live without the other. Although it took my heart some time to heal from Dima's passing, I can honestly say that Sasha has definitely helped to make it feel better. It's still really hard for me to think of my teddy bear because I still miss him so very much. Having Sasha around though has brought back a smile to my face and I love her for it. Although she is still very hyper, she has mellowed out quite a bit. Her and Misha have both learned to share and don't really go after each other when given special treats (one of their all time favorites are pig ears). We're still working on training her to sit, lay down, etc, etc, but believe it or not, Chris was able to teach her to play dead just like I taught Misha!! She definitely needs to practice more but overall I think she's well on her way to becoming a proper lady.

Attached are some pictures that I took of the two of them with my sister. As you can see they're very touchy-feely. Oh and yes, Sasha is a huge couch potato."

Update from Isis' New Family

We got an update from the family that adopted Isis! Here is what they had to say.

"Isis is doing really well. She had one accident in the house the first day and since then she has been perfect about signaling when she needs to go out. I have been leaving her crated for short periods of time just to get her used to it for when I go back to work next week. At first Isis cried for about 15 minutes, but she's crying less and less each time. Isis is really blossoming, she is becoming more talkative. She loves playing with our daughter, she actually fetches toys and brings them back!

I took her to doggie day care, her first day was just a half day to see how it went. The staff said she did great, she firmly but nicely let a German Shepherd know to leave her alone, and passed out as soon as she got in the car on the way home.

I take her running each morning, she is running for a longer period of time, 45 minutes instead of half an hour and Isis loves it. I bought her a harness to use when we go jogging."

Update on Trey and Cheyenne!

We got an update from Trey and Cheyenne's dad! He said the "pups" are happy and healthy. They just went to the vet and Trey weighs 76 pounds and Cheyenne weighs 68 pounds. He loves taking them for walks. He said that they play together all the time and are inseparable.

The dogs also like to sleep with their parents. There are some nights that Dan's wife needs to sleep in another bed because the dogs take up so much room on the bed there is none left for her!
We got an update on Trey and Cheyenne, who were adopted as pups from Harnessed to Hope! They are doing great and their family just loves them. Their human sister even had her picture taken with them on her prom night!

Bandit's Foster Home Becomes His Permanent Home!

Bandit's foster home failed fostering their fist time out - they are keeping Bandit! His foster mom says:

"Bandit is continuing to come out of his shell, he's such a little monkey. He is still working on his man issues: lately his response is sitting down, barking and howling. Pete's step dad came to visit this past weekend and that's how Bandit greeted him, but within 10 minutes he was up in his lap! (I asked him if he wore sausage cologne to make Bandit more comfortable!)

We were supposed to start school last weekend, but my trainer had the stomach flu so we will be starting this Saturday. He is a piece of cake to work with inside and I've been able to do quite a bit of training, but outside he is completely not interested. He is terrible on leash, and actually goes insane when I get the leash out. Until he learns some better leash manners our dog walker is just bringing her dog over to play with Sky and Bandit in the yard.

He and Sky will continue to go to daycare, but he's getting a little bratty there. He's getting a little nippy with the smaller dogs (which is kind of funny considering he lets our cat boss him around...hmmm, maybe that's why...he's taking it out on the little dogs). When Sky gets tired she goes to the "geriatric room" and passes out on the futon; when Bandit gets tired he hides under the futon and waits for dogs to run by and reaches out and grabs their legs!! He's a little stinker!

Speaking of stinker, we have (seemingly) gotten to the bottom of the middle of the night visits. We tried ignoring him a couple of nights ago and he was so good, just went back downstairs. But he was moving around a lot and we could hear his tags jingling so Pete went down to check on him and the poor thing had the runs. :( He was soooo upset and Pete felt terrible! Needless to say, the next 4 times he came to get us that night we didn't ignore him!

I gave him homemade anti-runs meals and he seemed to be feeling better, so last night when he came to get us 2 hours after going to bed we ignored him...and, he came to curl up on the floor right next to me for the rest of the night. This morning Pete found another pile of presents in the bathroom (at least he's polite enough to go on the tile!). So, he's been getting homemade meals again and will continue to for several days and it looks like I'll have to try a different food. Poor baby, hopefully once we get his bowels happy he'll sleep better.

We're just smitten with Bandit and thrilled to death that he's here with us. We will work hard over the next several months on obedience training. I've already talked to my trainer about trying to work with both of the dogs in harness, but we'll probably wait until he's better on leash. Hopefully by summer I'll be able to start with the two of them and be ready for next winter!"

Chloe the Samoyed

In mid December 2007, we were contacted by a young man in Baltimore Maryland. His girlfriend had moved out and he worked full time and went to school part time, and his Samoyed Chloe spent a lot of time alone. She wasn't getting enough exercise or attention and he knew she needed a home where she would get the love and attention that she deserved and needed. He sent us her vet records and photos and we put her up on our web site. Soon we had several adoption applications for Chloe!

Her owner drove up to Delaware to meet a volunteer who brought her to Pennsylvania. She spent the night at a kennel, and the next day two of our volunteers took her on an adoption. Chloe found a wonderful home, where she has a Samoyed brother and three little dog siblings. Chloe's new family knew that Chloe would need some special care - she was quite overweight and her coat was pretty matted. They put her on a diet and gave her a little time to settle in. Chloe's new family took her to the groomer, who found that her coat was very matted, so it had to be clipped so that it could grow back in nicely. She may look a little funny right now, but she's already lost 10 pounds. Her makeover will be finished in no time!
