For the modern customer, HVAC energy efficiency is a top concern and popular point of conversation. In honor of Earth Month, I've outlined the top five energy-saving tips that you can reference when your customers ask about improving their home energy efficiency.

Replace filters often - Hands down the best thing you can do to improve your energy efficiency is to replace your air filters often. The more debris that's in the filter, the less air can circulate through the HVAC system, making it work harder. The harder your HVAC unit works, the more energy it uses.
Set a schedule - Constantly adjusting your thermostat uses a lot of energy. Set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature that reflects your schedule so that your unit isn't cooling an empty house or working overtime when you're away.
Air sealing - A quick, inexpensive air-sealing fix can mean big savings on utilities. Blocking outside air from coming in not only helps keep allergies and other irritants out of your home, but it also prevents your HVAC unit from having to constantly heat or cool outside air.
Out with the old, in with the new - New light bulbs don't use as much energy and last a lot longer, but they also don't tend to run as hot - ultimately saving you from having to turn down your thermostat a few degrees or having to turn on a fan.
Turn down the temp - According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lowering the temperature on your water heater by just 10 degrees can yield a $12 to $30 reduction in energy costs annually. Also, taking a cooler shower or bath means lower energy use, from your HVAC unit to cool your home afterward.

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) 2017 Incentives Update

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) will continue to offer the existing Heating and Cooling incentives until June 30, 2017. New eligible equipment and incentives are expected to be introduced by July 1, 2017.

The Rebate Program will include:

$250 incentive when you have an existing furnace replaced with the purchase and installation of an eligible high-efficiency furnace equipped with an Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM). – will be eligible until Dec. 31, 2017

$250 incentive when you install or replace your existing central air conditioner (CAC) system or install a new CAC system that is purchased and installed of an ENERGY STAR qualified CAC system with a minimum 14.5 SEER and 12 EER (confirmed by AHRI reference number). – only eligible until June 30, 2017
$400 incentive when you install or replace your existing central air conditioner (CAC) replaced with the purchase and installation of an ENERGY STAR qualified central air conditioning system with a minimum 15 SEER and 12.5 EER (confirmed by AHRI reference number). – only eligible until June 30, 2017

The IESO will be removing the CAC incentives for the SEER 14.5 & 15 (EERs 12 &12.5) from the program as of June 30, 2017 and will be looking at introducing incentives for the following products starting July 1, 2017:

Central Air Conditioners – SEER 18+
Air Source Heat Pumps –Ducted and ductless, including ductless multi port
Drop in ECMs for furnaces
ECM Circulator pumps
Air Source Cold Climate Heat Pumps – Ducted and ductless, including ductless multiport
Adaptive Thermostats

Once the IESO confirms these new products will be eligible, HRAI will communicate the final details of the program changes for July 2017.

Please note the IESO can change the terms of the initiative during the program year, including the eligible products and incentive amount.

Tips To Prevent Back Pain When Shoveling Snow

That sharp pain you feel putting away the dishes on high shelf might be traced to lifting a shovel above your shoulder after this month's snow.
Snow shoveling can gift you with pain that keeps on giving, and sometimes won't go away for weeks, or even months. Repeatedly raising the arm when shoveling snow and specially by lifting that snow-filled shovel above the level of your shoulder can lead to several common back injuries.

Here are some tips from Ontario chiropractors to help ensure a pain-free winter:

Don't let the snow pile up: If the weather report calls for several days of snow. frequent shoveling will allow you to move smaller amounts of snow at once. It's far less strenuous in the long run.
Pick the right shovel: Use lightweight pusher-type shovel. If you are using a metal shovel, spray it with Teflon first, so snow won't stick to it.
Push, don't throw: Always push the snow to the side rather than throw it. That way you avoid lifting heavy shovelfuls of snow, and sudden twisting or turning movements.
Bend your knees: As with any heavy object, you need to use your knees, leg and arm muscles to do the pushing and lifting, while keeping your back straight.
Take a break: If you feel tired or short of breath, stop and take a rest. Stop shoveling immediately if you feel chest or back pain. If you have back pain that is severe or that persists for more than a day after shoveling, see a chiropractor. If you have chest pain that is severe, see a doctor immediately or call 911 for help.

Comparison Between Lennox ML195 and Lennox EL195E High Efficiency Gas Furnace.

What are the value added benefits to customers with the new EL195E furnace?

1. Lennox customers will save more money every time their HVAC system is operating.

The difference between the ML195 PSC motor and the EL195E ECM X13 motor is that the ECM motor is much more efficient. Why? Because it uses a brushless Direct Current (DC) motor, similar to the ECM motor if you’re already familiar with in a variable speed furnace. The ECM X13 motor is almost as energy efficient as a variable speed motor.

Consumer Rights When Changing Water Heater

If you are replacing your rental water heater and you choose to change rental providers, you are protected from arbitrary exit fees and penalties under the Ontario Consumer Protection Act. If your old supplier tells you that you may be subject to a “buy-out” of the old tank or a “tank return fee” or an “account closure fee” or any other charge, you need to be aware of the following: Under the Ontario Consumer Protection Act, a provider of any rental agreement which does not provide for a fixed term, and does not provide sufficient disclosure information so that you know upfront the maximum amount payable by you over the entire term of the agreement, the interest portion, the interest rate and the purchase option, can only charge you the following amounts to exit a contract:

The periodic rental payments due on or before the day the lease is terminated that have not already paid
The expenses incurred by your old provider for the removal of the old tank
The penalties, if any, imposed on you for unreasonable or excessive wear or use of the old tank.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

You were never presented with or signed a contract with a fixed term
Payments to your old provider are up to date.
Your new contractor is returning your old tank
Your old tank has only been subject to normal wear and tear

Consumer protection law in Ontario states that, other than what we have identified above, you should not be subject to any fees penalties when you return your old rental water heater.

Carrier High Efficiency Gas Furnace Heat Exchanger Issues

One the most common issues found in Carrier high efficiency gas furnaces is corrosion or blockage is their secondary heat exchangers in approximately 5 to 10 years after the original installation date or in other words premature secondary heat exchanger failure. This problem happens due to corrosive nature of condensation water produced during combustion of natural gas and improper design in drainage system which keeps the acidic water in secondary heat exchangers exit point as shown in the picture below and use of improper materials.

Class Action Lawsuit Against Carrier High Efficiency Furnaces

There were four class action complaints filed in the United States (Washington, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota) and two class action complaints filed in Canada (Ontario & British Columbia) with another being proposed in Quebec. The first lawsuit filed was in Washington State in June 2005. The suit alleged, “From January 1, 1989, Carrier manufactured and sold 90% residential high-efficiency condensing furnaces that contained defective polypropylene laminated condensing heat exchangers and failed prematurely.” (Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer used in wide variety of applications from ropes to bank notes). The products cited in the class action suit include high-efficiency condensing furnaces manufactured after January 1, 1989 with Carrier, Bryant, Payne or Day & Night on the nameplate.

The complaints specified that Carrier manufactured more than three million units with an inferior material in the secondary heat exchangers that may cause premature corrosion and failure. Carrier denies these allegations. Before any of the other complaints could reach fruition, the plaintiffs and Carrier Corp reached a settlement agreement.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon Monoxide is a byproduct of incomplete combustion of fuels such as petroleum and wood. Cracked or corroded gas furnace heat exchangers leak CO and other poisonous gasses into the home living area though air ducts. A damaged or cracked heat exchanger is the cause of the leading cause of carbon monoxide poisoning in North America.

Myth #1: There is no selection.

Facts: There are light-emitting diodes, better known as LEDs, for every need, including many household appliances, indoor flood lighting, decorative bulbs (chandeliers) and outdoor fixtures. LED bulbs can also be as small as 2 mm, making them ideal for fitting into hard to reach and compact ares.

Myth #2: They produce bright blue and blasting light.

Fact: Colour temperature describes the visual warmth or coolness of a light source. LED lights are available in a wide range from a bright light or a mellow glow making them suitable for any room. LEDs also offer dimming and color changing abilities. Whether you want to create a natural atmosphere in the kitchen or elegant, ambient lighting in your dining room.

Myth #3: They are too expensive!

Fact: LEDs have an incredibly long life, with each bulb lasting approx 25,000 hours or approx 25 years of use), compared to a life span of an incandescent light bulb, which is approx. 1000 hrs. Based on life span and typical electrical usage, an incandescent light bulb will cost home owners about $8.00 per year to run, while and LED bulb comes in at only $1.75.

Myth #4: They are hard to find in stores.

Fact: Retailers across the country carry hundreds of LED products to meet all you household lighting needs. With well known brands including Phillips, GE, the bulbs are widely available. Additionally, many areas have rebate programs that will ensure that lights are available at reasonable costs.

Myth #5: Switching to LEDs requires changing existing fixtures.

Fact: LEDs currently on the market are designed to fit all kinds of existing sockets. They work in standard bases that are common with incandescent and halogen installations. In most cases, they are the same size if not slightly smaller, that the bulbs they replace and do not pose any difficulties when making the switch.

Why Your Central Humidifier Might NOT be Working?

Central whole home humidifiers are an essential part of central heating and cooling systems in North America. Central heating systems make the indoor air very dry especially during cold winter months when temperatures plunge to minus double digits. All central humidifiers need fresh water to operate. Large By-Pass Central Humidifiers like Lennox HCWB-17 Humidifier or Aprilaire 600 Humidifier and Power Humidifiers like Lennox HCWP3-18 Humidifier have water pads which MUST be replaced annually. Some homeowners mistakenly wash their old humidifier water pads with CLR (Calcium Lime Rust) or Vinegar in order to re-use the old water pad. However, washing your existing water pad will remove all of the water absorbing material on the it, preventing the humidifier from working properly. This could also cause some serious health effects by bacterial growth, and could cause damage to your heating and cooling equipment.
Steam Humidifiers have Canisters or Cylinders which must be replaced annually as well. Aprilaire 800,for example has a water cylinder instead of a water pad.
If you notice your indoor air is extremely dry although the humidistat is turned to 45% RH, there is definitely something wrong. Either your humidifier needs a water pad replacement, or there is no water running through the system due to mechanical problems.

NEVER leave your natural gas fireplace unattended when operational
Keep children away from natural gas fireplace. Children can be severely injured.
Read and follow manufacturer instruction carefully when trying to turn on natural gas fireplace for the first time. Operational instructions are located under the fireplaces gas valve.
Never try to light your natural gas fireplace with BBQ lighter or matches.
If your natural gas fireplace fails to turn on call your local Heating Contractor for assistance.

In attempting to conserve energy and reduce our heating costs, we can sometimes make our homes too air tight. In fact, for a house to be healthy, it needs to “breathe”. It needs to expel moisture and other gases from inside and take in a constant supply of fresh air from outside.

When a fuel-burning appliance in your home does not get enough fresh air and fails to completely burn its fuel, carbon monoxide is produced.If ventilation is damaged or blocked, or if you have a powerful kitchen fan, bathroom fan or open hearth fireplace, then carbon monoxide can be drawn back inside the house.

Exhaust fans can compound the problem

Be mindful that the air you exhaust from your home has to be replaced. Powerful exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens or open hearth wood- burning fireplaces can actually create a negative pressure inside your home, resulting in a back draft which will draw exhaust fumes from your furnace, hot water heater or other appliances back into the house.

How can you tell if your home is too air tight?

The air inside your home is usually stuffy and stale
Excessive condensation is dripping down your windows (which could also mean your humidifier is set too high, so check that first)
The pilot light on your gas appliance keeps going out
A gas flame burns yellow instead of blue (except in the case of a natural gas fireplace)
The smell of exhaust gases is present in your home; although you cannot smell carbon monoxide, other exhaust gases do have an odour

If you see any of these signs, contact a certified heating contractor or a building ventilation expert to check your home and correct the problem consider these solutions:

Air Exchanger
If your home is tightly sealed to make
it energy efficient, consider investing in a professionally installed air exchange system. It exchanges the air inside your home for fresh outside air every 24 hours, without wasting heat.

Direct feed
When renovating or building, consider installing heating systems and appliances that have a direct feed of outside air for combustion, so they do not draw air from inside the home. The combustion chambers are sealed so they are safer and more energy efficient.

Gas Fireplaces - Too Hot for Tots

Every year, children are burned from contact with the glass barrier at the front of a gas fireplace. Statistics show that contact burns – injuries sustained when a part of the body touches a hot object – are the second leading cause of burns in children.

Children have been burned when they have fallen towards the gas fireplace and have pushed up against the hot glass for balance. Serious third- degree burns are the result. Others have touched the glass only for a moment out of curiosity. It takes just two seconds to be seriously burned. Many children have been burned while parents are in the room. Children are not only at risk for burns when the gas fireplace is in use but before and after use too. The glass barrier can heat up to more than 200°C in about six minutes during use. It takes an average of 45 minutes for the fireplace to cool to a safe temperature after a fire has been extinguished. Some children have even been burned when the fireplace is not in use, by the heat from the ignition light. Children are at risk of a burn injury whenever they are around a gas fireplace.

To keep your child safe around gas fireplaces:

Never leave a young child alone near a gas fireplace; they can be burned before, during, and after use of the fireplace
Create a barrier around the gas fireplace; safety guards can be installed to keep your child at a safe distance at all times
Teach children about the dangers of fire; children are fascinated by heat and fire and may not understand the dangers
Consider not using the fireplace if you have young children less than five years of age, using it only after your children have gone to sleep, or consider turning the unit off completely, including the ignition flame, whenever the unit is not in use
Be aware of contact burn dangers from irons, curling irons, radiators, older oven doors, wood-burning stoves, and fireplaces

It takes an average of 45 minutes for the fireplace to cool to a safe temperature after a fire has been extinguished.

Four Steps to CO Safety

To keep your home safe from CO hazards, follow these four steps:

1. Be aware of the hazard. Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless and poisonous gas produced by common household appliances such as your furnace, fireplace, gas stove, propane heater, kerosene lantern or any other fuel-burning equipment.

2. Eliminate CO at the source. Get your home’s fuel-burning appliances and equipment inspected by a certified technician who works for a TSSA- registered heating contractor. To ensure a technician is registered, visit the Find a Contractor section of COSafety.ca

3. Install certified CO alarms. They will warn you of rising CO levels, giving
you time to take potentially life-saving action. For proper installation locations, follow manufacturer’s instructions or ask your local fire department.

4. Know the symptoms of CO poisoning. They are similar to the flu – nausea, headache, burning eyes, confusion and drowsiness – except there is no fever. If they appear, immediately get everyone, including pets, outside to fresh air and call 911 and/or your local fire department.

Trane recalling 100,600 air conditioners for shock risk

Trane said June 24 it is recalling more than 100,000 Trane XB300 and American Standard Silver SI air conditioning systems because the ground screws used in some units do not have the two threads required to provide sufficient grounding. This recall involves 37 models of Trane XB300 and American Standard brand Silver SI split system outdoor cooling units. The units are gray and have a black grated front. Check model numbers on the Trane website. Consumers should immediately turn off the cooling unit via the main breaker switch and check the model information. Consumers with recalled air conditioning systems should contact Trane or their installer or service dealer for instructions on scheduling a free inspection and repair. HRAI Comments on Proposed New Rules for Door-To-Door Sales and Rentals of Water Heaters and Furnaces

Late last year the Government of Ontario passed legislation to address the problem of misleading sales tactics involved in door-to-door sales and rentals of water heaters. Legislative changes to the Consumer Protection Act, 2002 were enacted in December 2013 as part of theStronger Protection for Ontario Consumers Act, 2014. HRAI applauded the Minister of Consumer Services moving quickly to address a problem that has cast a negative spotlight on the industry because of the unethical behaviour of a few companies. HRAI even suggested that potential measures should be broadened to include other products sold at the doorstep, since there was mounting evidence that these same unethical tactics were being used to sell furnaces and air conditioning systems.
More recently the Ministry of Consumer Services released a draft regulation consultation document entitled “Door-To-Door Sales: Improved Consumer Protection”. This document presents the more detailed regulations that will give life to the legislation. And as happens too often with this type of legislation, “the devil is in the details.”
The rules proposed include an extended cooling off period (to 20 days), a requirement for third-party verification calls to confirm customers’ understanding of the terms of new contracts, and some mandatory new language in contracts. Unfortunately, while these changes might be needed to deal with certain types of transactions, the proposed new rules, as currently drafted, will apply to all direct sales agreements done in customers’ homes, which will have the effect of significantly complicating the traditional contracting sales process for thousands of HVAC (and other) contractors.
In the consultation document, the term “direct agreement” is defined as “a contract negotiated or concluded in person, away from a supplier’s place of business, a trade fair or an auction.” Additional clarifications in the document confirm that this type of agreement, as defined by the Ministry, will include the vast majority of HVAC sales in the residential marketplace, since heating and cooling contractors do not typically sell out of an office or retail showroom and almost all contracts are concluded in the customer’s home.
It seems that the Ministry understanding of how the HVAC industry operates is flawed. Immediately following their definition of “direct sales”, the consultation document claims that “door-to-door sales are the most common type of direct agreement” In fact, most contracts are notinitiated through door-to-door solicitation as this approach is not particularly effective except in very limited circumstances (where vendors of rental water heaters present themselves in as being in some way connected to a regulated utility business).
In a letter to the Ministry dated April 22^nd, HRAI submitted that, if this definition of direct agreements is already established in legislation, the scope of the proposed regulations must be narrowed to so that they apply only to transactions resulting from unsolicited door to door sales or rentals. Unless this narrowing occurs, the regulations will cause more harm than good by imposing onerous new rules on a multitude of HVAC contractors who engage in perfectly acceptable sale practices.
HRAI has offered to discuss with the Ministry some refinements to the proposed rules so that they properly target the problem at hand.
