Celebrations of Life

Greetings everyone, Robert and I are taking a vacation from August 18^th until September 3^rd to celebrate 20 years of happy marriage! See you all in September and remember to celebrate life every day. Love, Aleia

Our second Death Café was held last Saturday and it was, again, a wonderful celebration of life! We had 30 reservations; 18 new patrons and 9 repeat guests arrived. When asked to write three words to describe the experience, patrons reported these to name a few: revealing, respectful, awesome, helpful, caring, inspiring, beautiful, open, exhilarating, educational, and rich! Our next Café will be held on Saturday, September 28^th from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Federated Church. Watch for the event to be posted on our Facebook page.

Memorial Celebration - Two gatherings will celebrate Pat Taylor’s life and legacy. The first will be Thursday, August 22, at 4 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Flagstaff. The second will be Saturday, September 28, at 3 p.m. at Tonto Basin School. All are invited

Everyone at Further Shore is sending peace and healing thoughts to the family, extended family and friends of Pat Taylor. We had the honor and privilege of serving Pat in the early stages of a serious medical situation last Fall. Beauty, humor, quick wit and the seemingly endless ability to love life were but a few of the qualities that she exhibited to everyone she met. Pat could also out-hike most of her FS staff! She passed peacefully on Monday, July 29^thwith David, her husband, of 50+ years, nearby. Greetings everyone, It is fire season in the Southwest; time to use care

with flames of all kinds. The recent loss of nineteen Granite Mountain

hotshots has been deeply felt here in Arizona. Everyone I know seems

to know someone who was connected to this event. It gives us cause to

reflect on the miracle of life as well as its uncertainty. Wherever you are,

please join me in taking a moment to be grateful to all first responders

who rush forward into perilous situations. Theirs is a life of caring, service,

and courage. May their dear families take solace in the time they shared

the memories they made and the gifts they gave in service.

Further Shore Summer Programs and retreats are in full swing. Bridging the Gap will be offered just once this season (the first week in August). Holding Space is a three hour workshop to help you deepen your understanding true presence. There are several dates to choose from. Remembering Konrad

Dear Further Shore Friends,

Our Flagstaff community will remember Rev. Konrad Kaserer at a memorial service onWednesday, May 22, 2013 at 6 p.m. at the Unity Church of Flagstaff, 6134 Black Bill Road, Flagstaff, AZ 86004. His obituary appeared in the Daily Sun on Sunday. Robert and I have known Konrad for many years as a teacher, minister, counselor, priest and friend. We shared deeply meaningful conversations and healing ceremonies during an especially transformational time. Konrad’s written mission statement for his life reads: “To honor my life and priestly vocation; to honor the Divine by living the divine life I came here to live; to express love, happiness, abundance, joy, peace, compassion; to be in communion with my beloved; to travel and experience the world as the beautiful garden that it is. I want others to be at least as successful as I am.” He will be dearly missed and always remembered.

Walking in the Ponderosa Pine forest last week I spotted the first sprouts of yellow flowers poking through the pine needles. Spring is finally coming to the still snow-capped mountain. Meadows are greening up, red-winged black birds are singing and daffodils are bobbing in the blustery wind. Springtime for me, especially during the astrological sign of Aries, marks a time of waking up to new beginnings and honoring what is ending. Let your voice be heard!All adults can benefit from thinking about what their healthcare choices would be if they could not speak for themselves. April 16^th is National Healthcare Decisions Day. Visit the site and consider completing your living will this month. Our own Meg Leander is available to guide individuals, families or groups through The Five Wishes, “a living will with heart and soul” that was created by the Florida nonprofit organization Aging with Dignity.

Hold the Date: June 29, 2013 from 10 a.m. to noon for Flagstaff’s first Death Café. In Loving Memory

Dear Further Shore friends, Our team was honored to serve Karen Vercoe in her valiant journey and transition. My thanks to her Further Shore team and to Hospice Compassus who provided her end of life care. Here is the obituary that appeared in Sunday, March 3^rd Daily Sun paper.

Karen Leslie Vercoe, born November 23, 1956 died on January 15, 2013 after a brief struggle with a cancerous brain tumor. A kind and gentle soul, she gave her life to the care of children; first her own and then at Sechrist Elementary as a school nurse. Her career continued with the care of children when she transferred to Flagstaff Medical Center and became a charge nurse in the pediatric unit. Among her life accomplishments were two wonderful children; a son, Alex and a daughter, Amanda Iris. She loved the beach and was an avid scuba diver. Despite the tragedy of the diagnosis, she and her family were deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support from this community. There are many who will feel loss of her passing. The memorial, a celebration of her life, will be held on April 21st, 2013 from 10am-2pm at Joanie Abbott’s property in Flagstaff, AZ: 1751 S River Valley Rd. All are welcome. Please bring a dish of food. Car-pooling is preferred. RSVP: 928-607-0815.

With only days left in this Winter Season, Flagstaff is again blessed by a deep blanket of snow! While Wayne’s House is still closed for the season, our service continues with gentle support of six Tender Loving Care (TLC) Clients; the eldest is eighty-one and the youngest is four! Your generosity makes our work possible. Thank you for helping us to help them! Traditionally for me, Winter is the time of rest, rejuvenation, writing and research. I recently wrote a news brief about a Anita Moorjani’s best-selling book Dying To Be Me, which describes her amazing journey through cancer, dying, afterlife, and return to life. She will be speaking at the Creative Life Center in Sedona on March 23^rd from7-9 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general seating; doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event is hosted by David Sunfellow of NHNE-NDE.

Terry Gross with NPR recently interviewed Dr. Sam Parnia, author of a new book Erasing Death: The Science That Is Rewriting the Boundaries Between Life and Death. He's a critical-care doctor who is the director of resuscitation research at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. He's conducting research into optimal cardiac arrest care, and into the experiences some cardiac arrest patients report they have brought back from the other side of death. He says whether these experiences are psychological phenomena or actually happen, they've been reported so routinely they warrant further study. Choosing Wisely. How can physicians and patients have the important conversations necessary to ensure the right care is delivered at the right time? An initiative of the ABIM Foundation, Choosing Wisely is focused on encouraging physicians and patients to think and talk about medical tests and procedures that may be unnecessary, and in some instances can cause harm. To spark these conversations, leading specialty societies have created lists of evidence-based recommendations that should be discussed to help make wise decisions about the most appropriate care based on a patients’ individual situation. Choosing Wisely is part of a multi-year effort to support and engage physicians in being better stewards of finite health care resources. The ABIM Foundation is a nonprofit established by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1999.

An important part of our mission is to encourage people to have a living will and a medical power of attorney who will follow and honor your wishes if you cannot speak for yourself. Further Shore is now a state liaison for National Healthcare Decision Day which is April 16, 2013. The NHDD is founded to inspire, educate, and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning. Meg Leander is available to help individuals or families explore an advance directive created by Aging with Dignity called The Five Wishes. Care givers may enjoy listening to the radio show On Being as Krista Tippett interviews Joan Halifax. Joan has worked with hospice and end of life care for over thirty years. During the show, she discusses what she calls Edge States, as well as her thoughts on the sorrow within compassion and our collective moral distress. She offers bracing, nourishing thoughts on finding buoyancy rather than burnout in how we work, live, and care for others (51 minutes). At the close of this radio conversation she offers a 10 minute meditation on grief that she invites us to download and share.

Here is a Ted Talk offered by Dr. Krisin Neff on Self-Compassion. With the support of the administration at Flagstaff Medical Center, Dr. Neff will be coming to Flagstaff in July. Her two presentations on 7/16 and 7/17 will be open to the public. Stay tuned for time and place.

A Moment of Silence

Dear Friends Near and Far,

As you know, at the heart of our work is the intention to support those facing the end of life. We also assist loss-survivors to cope with grief. On the prompting of a friend, who lives near Newtown, Connecticut, I recently took time to visit a website remembering the shooting victims. While looking into the faces of Olivia, Charlotte, Daniel and the other children, I am struck by the beauty in each child’s face; the light within them. When I read about their principal and teachers who also gave up their lives that day, I am struck by their courage. My heart cannot help but contract, my tears cannot help but to mingle with a nation grieving. How does anyone help those coping with this kind of grief? A moment of silence is not enough; it cannot be enough. But if you are reading this now, please join the millions who have held a moment of silence for this group of souls who left this world in such an unimaginable manner. Speaking through the tears of his own grief, one child’s father offered sympathy to the gunman’s family. May we all be so gracious. May grace come gently to those who remain in the shadow of this loss. May peace prevail upon earth. May we each invoke something useful for coping with this kind of grief and pay it forward in kind.

The Crow’s Nest will return on Wednesday, August 1^st from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Helping individuals and families chart a course through times of transition, this monthly discussion and support group offers a safe space to discuss strengths and challenges, swap resources for optimal quality of life and improve communication of needs. Facilitated by Meg Leander; offered freely.

On Saturday July 21, 2012 former TLC Client, Kat Seekatz will participate in the "Relay for Life", a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This event is staged in many cities across the country. During the event, lighted luminarias are placed along the walking path dedicated to loved ones who had cancer. Participants will walk around a designated track anytime between 6 p.m. on the 21^st of July and 6 a.m. on the 22^nd. Kat hopes to walk two shifts, one at sunset and one at dawn in honor of VTara Ruscher. The event will take place at the Williams Rec Center. If you wish to support her walk, contact her at kat@cclearwater.com for details.

On Father’s Day, June 17^th our beloved TLC Client and friend, Victoria (VTara) Ruscher passed into spirit. Born on March 1, 1956 in Omaha, NE and moved to Flagstaff in 1995, VTara was trained as a rebirther, Flower of Life facilitator and Reiki Master. As an artist she worked with drawing, painting, jewelry and fabric arts. Her family enjoyed camping and traveling to beautiful natural places in the desert Southwest, Pacific North, Mexico and Germany. A graduate of the Flagstaff Leadership Program, she was an active volunteer in a variety of community action and service groups. She has been a client with Further Shore since January of 2008 when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Her physical presence is dearly missed, the memories we shared will sustain us, and her radiance will continue to inspire and teach us.

VTara’s Memorial and Celebration of Life

Date: Saturday, July 7^th

Time: Gathering at 5:00 p.m. and Ceremony from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Place: The Nordic Center – about 15 miles north of Flagstaff on Highway 180 at mile marker 232 (on the east side of the road).

What to bring and social time: Feel free to bring your own snack or picnic if you come at 5:00 p.m. as the ceremony time runs through the dinner hour. There are some folding chairs available at the Nordic, but bring a folding chair if you wish. After the ceremony, Chuck’s camper will be set up in National Forest nearby (FR 794 just south of the Nordic at mile marker 231 on the east side of the road and about 1 mile back; he will post signs and maps will be available after the ceremony). He welcomes all to join him camping overnight or to visit camp for a while that night or Sunday a.m.. Please bring whatever you may need (camping gear, food, beverages).

Dear Further Shore Friends,

The wind is roaring in Arizona and with it comes a feeling of cleansing and change. I want to share about a couple items that have crossed my desk recently while I am avidly researching Near Death Experiences (NDE) phenomena. First, I think you might enjoy watching a youtube of Dr. Eben Alexander III, a neurosurgeon who had a NDE in 2008. Having read about NDE’s for over 30 years, the material is not new to me. Eben’s story, however, is really unique. Next up: two books. Dying To Be Me by Anita Moorjani is an autobiography telling of her NDE (cancer related) and offers another amazing perspective on life after life. It is beautifully written and describes several little miracles for Anita including a connection with Dr. Wayne Dyer, who was instrumental in getting the book published quickly. Backwards: Returning to our Source for Answers by Nanci Danison offers a detailed account of the author’s NDE and perspective about human life on earth that is fascinating and healing. Lastly, David Sunfellow founder of New Heaven-New Earth in Sedona has been offering a series of public talks on the subject of “How NDE’s are changing the world”. In Loving Memory Further Shore offers heartfelt love and sympathy to the family of Jude Philbrick, Aleia’s long-time friend from St. Petersburg, Florida. Jude completed her physical life on Saturday, May 26^th in the company of her beloved husband, David, her parents, Ted and Geri Lenocker and her nephew Jackson. She was in the final stages of a rare cancer when she was flown by medical jet last Wednesday to the family farm in Iowa that she so loved. Jude was a graphic artist, world traveler, and avid gardener. She expressed care and kindness to everyone she met; often consoling others when they expressed worry about her. She leaves a legacy of abiding friendship, spiritual strength, joyful laughter and unconditional love that will be a source of comfort and will be long remembered by those who knew her.

Holding Space – A message from Aleia
We are currently holding sacred space for our TLC Client, VTara Ruscher. She has been a client since January of 2008 when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. She has valiantly faced surgeries, chemotherapy and a vast array of uncomfortable symptoms with grace, good humor and courage. During this time she joyfully welcomed a grandchild, visited with family and friends, created beautiful works of art, served as a Further Shore and Artist Coalition volunteer, facilitated Llumination Quests, participated in the Climb to Cure Cancer and inspired everyone within her influence to remain hopeful, forgiving, positive and embracing of life. She and her husband, Chuck, just bought a home here in Flagstaff, and plan to move within a week or two.
VTara is entering the next stage of her journey with the same radiance and grace she always shows us. As of last week she entered hospice at home; as cancer has progressed in her body to where the chemo is no longer helpful. May these next weeks or months be blessed with magic and miracles for her and her family. May she find her new home to be perfect in every way. She knows deeply that her essence goes beyond bodily expression; she is eating, resting and feeling well right now. She is focused on that feeling. She is beginning to sense the vastness that awaits us all. She is approaching these changes with her eyes wide open, steadfast, beautiful. Please join me, her family, and her community of dear friends in holding this sacred space for VTara.
A special request VTara has made is that we join her in the practice of Ho’oponopono (an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness). She has made this practice an integral part of her spiritual life and it has served her deeply in all her relationships. Ponopono is defined as “to put to rights; to put in order or shape, correct, revise, adjust, amend, regulate, arrange, rectify, tidy up, make orderly or neat.” So, you may offer this practice by visualizing VTara, her family, her community and the world in light and love and to then say: “I am sorry.” “Please forgive me.” “Thank you.” “I love you.” (in any order you wish). This is to dispel any feelings of hurt or regretful interactions; to clear the slate and be in peace for any real or perceived judgments. Her friend, (M.D. in Nebraska) shared this beautiful Rumi message today. I share it now with you, humbly and with gratitude for our friend, V.

Further Shore's 7th Annual Gala and Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 6-11 p.m. at the Radisson Woodlands Hotel in Flagstaff. This memorial event has become a beloved Flagstaff tradition. Please consider serving as an event Table Captain. Details to come.

Bridging the Gap
This training is required for Further Shore Volunteers and useful for anyone in a supportive role with loved ones in transition. It will be offered on May 11th and 12th. Registration is open for 2 additional participants. Please see the website for details about the training.

I am reaching out today to suggest an amazing book, The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. It is a book about two teens, Hazel Grace and Augustus, who meet at the local "Cancer Kids Support Group" and fall in love. The book is about being teens living with the disease called cancer; but it is really about so much more. Luminous and at the same time raucously told from the teen point of view, it will leave you in laughter and tears. "The only thing worse about being a kid with cancer is being a parent with a kid with cancer, " says Hazel Grace in one reflective moment. The Fault In Our Stars invites everyone to let go of tip toeing around mortality and live out loud. In the month of January it was my honor to serve TLC Client, Tim Whitney. While Tim was only a client for a short time, I was humbled by his strong spirit and generous heart. He was and still is beloved by local Colorado River Guides and a global community of friends and family. You may read about his amazing life here.

Tim actually passed on the same day as our beloved canine/coyote singer. . . Jake had a tumor removed from his leg on December 30th and had what looked like the miraculous recovery. He enjoyed a month of eating roasted chicken, walks in the forest snow and singing for treats. Full of grace, he departed early on January 30th in the gentle company of Robert, Madison, me and his docs (Westover and Crawford). Tim, also full of grace, passed on later that day in the gentle company of his beloved wife, Pam and his siblings. There have been many mystical moments associated with both their transitions. What I am left with is a gratitude that is impossible to express in words and some new friends who give a deeper meaning to the words "Further Shore."

As most of you may know, Further Shore takes a rest in the deep winter months to reflect on the past year and envision plans for the new one. Reflections of last year include an amazing and successful Bone Dance! Please check out photos on our blog! A big "Thank You" to Jim Torson for service as our event photographer. While you are browsing, visit the home page to watch a short video introducing you to our TLC Client Support Program and Wayne's House. With your generous support we continue to fulfill our mission for these and other TLC Clients.

We are excited to be planning the "Naturally Caring TLC for Care Givers Series" from April - November at the Joe Montoya Senior Center. We will kick off the Series on April 18th. We will also add a monthly Support and Discussion Group with a focus on helpful navigational strategies for families in transition. Watch for details about both these programs in February!

We are most grateful to welcome Meg Leander to our team as my co-Koala Bear! "Koala Bear" is our playful name for someone who serves others as a "Quality of Life Advocate". Meg will assist me with Care Planning and Advocacy for our TLC clients. She is also be available to offer Llumination Quest facilitation in the comfort of YOUR home. FREE Senior & Caregiver Discussion Series: On Friday, Aug. 12^th, Aleia O’Reilly will be presenting a meaningful and interactive workshop on stress reduction entitled “Nip It in the Bud.” The workshop begins at 9:30 and is FREE and is held at the Joe Montoya Senior Center (formerly the Thorpe Senior Center).

On Wednesday, August 17th join us for Naturally Caring TLC for Care Givers Workshop #5 "Create Your Own Fabulous Fast Food." Learn time and energy saving tips so you can create delicious healthy, nutritious, and inexpensive "grab and go" meals! Enjoy sampling the food prepared by Michele Lytle, Personal Chef.The workshop is from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Joe Montoya Senior in the arts and crafts room. FREE to the public.
