Travel expert Christine Karpinski tells us how you can still travel to the Olympic games for cheap!

The 2010 Vancouver Olympics is just a week away and believe it or not it’s still not too late to see the games. Travel expert Christine Karpinski knows this because she just recently finalized her travel arrangements.

“My family will soon be flying from Texas to Vancouver to take in among other events an Olympic hockey game, and we’ll be staying within walking distance of the venue,” says Karpinski. “When people ask me when I started making all these plans, they always expect me to say something like ‘November 2008.’ So when I tell them I purchased the hockey tickets this past November—yes, November of ‘09—and just finalized my travel arrangements in January, they’re stunned.”

Here are Karpinski’s tips for booking your Olympic vacation without spending a fortune:

How to get there
You have to plot your plan for getting from point A (your home) to point B (Vancouver). If you live in the Pacific Northwest, like Seattle, then you might be able to drive across the border for a short stay or even just for the day.

Everyone else will have to travel by airplane. Check with popular online travel agencies as well as the websites of individual airlines. Play around with different departure and arrival points. You never know when a good deal might pop up, or how long it will last, so be ready to book quickly.

Whenever taking a last-minute vacation, it’s a good idea to purchase a travel insurance policy that covers changed flight dates and/or cancellations. This way, if things fall through, you won’t be out nearly as much money.

Where to stay
Accommodations will be tough to find this close to the opening ceremonies. Hotel rooms can be thousands of dollars per night so it’s time to get creative.

“I even looked into rooms on cruise ships that will be anchored in English Bay during the Winter Games. Ultimately, I rejected that option because I’d have to deal with the inconvenience of waiting in the freezing Canadian cold for a ferry each time I needed to go to my room… or cabin, as it were, which was sure to be small and cramped.”

Again, no matter where you end up staying, be sure to purchase some sort of travel insurance policy.

Consider booking an actual home away from home
Book a vacation rental home . In most instances, these cabins, chalets, and cottages are people’s second homes or in the case of an event as crowd-drawing as the Olympics, primary homes. And they’re often a much better value than a hotel room.

You can find great deals on vacation home rental websites like VRBO.com and HomeAway.com. You’ll pay much less than a hotel room, and you’ll return each evening to a place with a kitchen and living area.

If you looked at vacation rental sites and came up empty, keep checking! Even at this stage of the game, homeowners are adding properties that are available for travelers to rent. Also if the owners haven’t attracted Olympic renters, they may lower the prices. In addition to saving money, the homeowner can answer your questions about the area and recommend tips for activities and transportation once you get there.

Tips on buying tickets the sporting events
Visit the official Vancouver Olympics website. If you’re Canadian, you can directly purchase tickets there. For Americans, there is a fan-to-fan marketplace where tickets are constantly being added and auctioned off (Tickets.Vancouver2010.com/Buy/TicketSales). “This is a sanctioned ticket seller, so you can rest assured that all postings are legitimate,” says Karpinski.

You can also visit CoSport.com, which is the official ticket seller for the U.S. and other countries. The website also has one more ticket release planned before the Opening Ceremonies.

Consider attending only Week 1. Unless your heart is set on seeing a gold medal round of your sport of choice, think about attending an event during the first week. Since almost all of the gold medal events are scheduled during the second week of the Games, you have a much better chance of finding affordable tickets when things are just getting started.

Try the “walk up” option. Once you’re in Vancouver, consider walking up to the ticket booth a few minutes before an event is about to start and inquiring as to whether there are any open seats.

Can’t get four (or three or two) seats together? That’s okay! The Olympics are as much about international fellowship as athletic competition. So make it a goal to mix and mingle with your fellow spectators as much as possible! If the tickets you’re able to buy are scattered all over the stadium, don’t bemoan the fact that you can’t sit with your traveling companions. Instead, embrace the chance to meet the diverse people around you.

It’s not all about the games. In addition to the Games themselves, the 2010 Winter Olympics will include official ceremonies and celebrations that feature live performances, recreational activities, and Canadian and international arts and culture. “My family will be attending a Victory Ceremony, which is essentially one big party with live bands,” says Karpinski.

Make sure you know where you’re going and how you’re going to get there. There’s an official Olympic transportation system, and most venues have multiple points of entry, so you have to know in advance how you’re going to get around.

Unless you’re going to be zipping in and out of the city for a day trip, it would be a shame not to sample some of the other non-Olympic things Vancouver has to offer. The city’s website OlympicHostCity.Vancouver.CA includes an excellent list of free events to help you get started. Keep in mind that some free events may still require tickets.

We asked The Hills beauty, Audrina Patridge, ten questions about Valentine’s Day and she answered. She talks about romance, feeling sexy, and she even has some great gift ideas from Bluefly.

FUSN: What are your favorites for each of these on Valentine’s Day?
AP: Romantic song: “Colorblind” by Counting Crows
Movie: Pretty Woman
Food / Dessert: Chocolate covered strawberries or fresh berries and whipped cream
Perfume: Leila Lou
Most romantic spot to take a vacation: Anywhere tropical!

FUSN: What’s the one thing you do to feel sexy on Valentine’s Day?
AP: I always feel sexy when I have great undergarments on! I also feel sexy in a gorgeous pair of high heels. Wear what you feel comfortable in, but remember that it’s fun to dress up every once in a while.

FUSN: What advice can you give men so they can give their girlfriends the perfect Valentine’s Day?
AP: Make sure you pay attention to what your girlfriend likes, not what you “think” she should like. It’s important to put a little effort into it– maybe cook her dinner or dessert, or surprise her with a love letter.

FUSN: What’s the one thing a girl must do for herself on Valentine’s Day?
AP: If you are spending Valentine’s Day without a significant other, then I vote for a spa day or a mani/pedi with your best friends!

FUSN: Any Valentine’s Day gifts men should not give their girlfriends?
AP: Make sure you know your girlfriend’s size if you’re going to buy her lingerie! There is nothing worse than stuff that doesn’t fit.

FUSN: Do you think it’s too generic for men to bring flowers and chocolate or is it still a perfect way to start out a date on Valentine’s Day?
AP: I think it’s all in the gesture. If you are going to pick up a bouquet of her absolute favorite flowers (i.e. pink tulips), then it’s awesome, but don’t go out and grab red roses because that’s what they had at the grocery store!

FUSN: Would you rather stay in and let the guy make you dinner or go out to a fancy restaurant on Valentine’s Day?
AP: I like both! I have to say, there is nothing more romantic than having a guy cook an entire meal for you… plus, on Valentine’s Day the restaurants usually do a fixed menu which takes some of the fun out of it.

FUSN: Going on a first date on Valentine’s Day– yes or no?
AP: It seems like a lot of pressure for a first date. I would rather be having a glass of wine with my girlfriends than meeting a guy for the first time on Valentine’s day.

FUSN: Past or present, do you have a celebrity crush that you wish you could spend Valentine’s Day with?
AP: Oh gosh… I’d have to think about that one!

Here are Audrina’s top picks for Valentine’s Day from Bluefly and why she loves each one:

Valentino Red Satin Bow Detail Zip Clutch
Retail: $795
Bluefly: $636

I love this clutch! It’s so feminine and then, of course, the signature Valentino red. It looks like a present, and it is!

Jardin White CZ 3 Carat Studs
Retail: $260
Bluefly: $156

These earrings are gorgeous without being gaudy or breaking your boyfriend’s bank. Perfect of everyday, but would also look great paired with an evening gown and a sleek updo. Note to guys: You can never go wrong when you give us jewelry for Valentine’s Day.

Kashmere Red Gloves

Ladies, don't let your guy pack on the pounds this Sunday. Here are some foods that are delicious and non-fattening.

Don’t let your New Year’s Resolution to lose weight get the best of you on Super Bowl Sunday. Health and fitness expert Dr. Eric Plasker gives us his tips on eating right while enjoying the game and the much anticipated Super Bowl commercials.

Dips that Don’t
For dips, try hummus and babaganoush instead of heavy cheese dips. You can buy an assortment of flavors, such as red pepper, garlic and olive. Pair these with pre-cut veggies like carrots, broccoli and celery, rather than chips. You can also buy whole grain, stone ground or 100 percent whole-wheat crackers, which contain fiber and nutritional value. You’ll get all of the flavor and less of the fat.

Sub Saviors
Sub sandwiches can be a good way to get your protein and fill up on not-so-fattening food. Limit the mayo, pack your sandwich with extra lettuce and tomato, and eat it open-faced to save on calories.

Wings for Winners
Buy baked chicken wings instead of fried ones. When wings are covered in sauce, you won’t be able to taste the difference anyway. Just be sure to steer clear of blue cheese and ranch dressings, or buy low-fat versions.

Dessert Danger
Finger foods can be the most dangerous, as they’re easy to pop into your mouth without thinking. Don’t be a grazer. Load your plate with a small portion of whatever you want to try, and then step away from the dessert table. This way, you’re practicing portion control.

Workout Warriors
Plan ahead. If you think you’ll be taking in an extra 1,000 calories on Super Bowl Sunday, make sure to get in a good workout earlier that day and on the Friday and Saturday before the game. This way, you can compensate for the extra intake and net out without weight gain.

Dr. Eric Plasker is also the best-selling author of The 100 Year Lifestyle and The 100 Year Lifestyle Workout.
