Walk the Walk: Moschino F/W 2012 Collection

Moschino continues to show a strong collection this season by sending out some colourful pieces to the runway. Even though the inspirations are quite out of place (military, sportswear, cheerleaders...), somehow Rossella Jardini can pull everything together with this concept: a cheerful theme with bright colours. When I look at the images, I feel like there is something for every Moschino lover. Everything is so fun to wear and I cannot wait to see them appear on editorials! What do you think?

Pros:
- I like the inspiration a lot. Military fits the fashion house well.
- The colour palette is beautiful. Bright and cheerful!
- There is something for every Moschino girl, from biker jacket to whimsical dress, or military inspired blazer to oversized cape dress.
- I like the small waist bags a lot.

Cons:
- Would love to see some different colours on the shoes.

Trendology: Bape x Porter Jacquard ABC Camo 3Way Briefcase

So by now, you should know Porter is having a collaboration with Bape this year and now the products are out on Zozotown. I like the dark navy Bape Camo print because it is iconic to the brand and applying it on Porter products is beautiful. Out of all the products, my favourite is the 3Way bag. I do have a tanker version and yes, I wouldn't mind to upgrade it to this version.

Walk the Walk: Prada F/W 2012 Collection

Let's play with retro design and oversized embellishments, shall we?

No more automobile related pieces, for this coming season, Miuccia is bring us back to the retro geometric prints. To make sure you are getting the retro feeling, the prints are paired up with the pants suits which I think is a brilliant idea. While a lot of designers like to use small gems to decorate the clothing pieces, Miuccia decides to exaggerate this idea by making them big (as if they look like insects now) and this idea applies on both the clothing and bags. I find this collection to be very interesting and yes, it does mirror the menswear collection. What do you think?

So, there will be no pre-fall collection for Prada this season?

Pros:
- The colour palette is very nice, and Miuccia always aces the print department without any problem.
- There are a lot of pants suits this season. These pieces are mirroring the menswear.
- The bags, are without a doubt, the most eye catchy pieces in this collection. The oversized embellishment is the key.
- How can you not like the sunglasses? They look very edgy.

Cons:
- Clearly the high heels need to be modified a bit before they can be released to the public. (Check the video out if you haven't seen it yet, even the designer herself almost fell down).

So Banana Republic is collaborating with Janie Bryant, the costume designer for Mad Men, for a second Mad Men inspired capsule collection (Mad Men 2.0?). The collection will hit store on March 1st and at this moment, I am just attracted to the campaign. [Read Here]

I am attracted to this collection because of David Gandy, ad sells (source: the Fashionist)

Uniqlo has released the new campaign and it features 2 very familiar faces: Cyndi Lauper and Tavi Gevinson. While I am all right with Cyndi's image, I still find Tavi to look very awkward. Maybe this is the reason why she is behind the scene now? [Read Here]

Walk the Walk: Fendi F/W 2012 Collection

Perfection!

In my memory, I have never highly praised Fendi until now. This collection is simply beautiful. Even though the colour palette is very safe here (expect the last few pieces), the silhouette and the use of materials are what caught my attention the most. When I look at the collection, I feel like there is a hint of Native America flare when I look at some of the pieces. Also, I am certain that Stingray has to be involved in the mood board, or else how can you see those cool leggings and structured pieces around the should area? Lat but not least, those accessories and boots are something ladies will die for next season!

Pros:
- For some reasons, I feel like there is a hint of Native American flare and truthfully, I think it creates magic in this collection. Also, I believe Stingray is definitely one of the inspirations.
- A very safe colour palette choice, except for the last 4 fur coats, these 4 are the items of the season.
- It's interesting to see the moth/butterfly print on the fur coat.
- The boots are amazing! I love the colour combination and the height is perfect.
- I just cannot get enough of the bags, they are so pretty.
- Love the shoulder structure on some of the pieces, it makes the girls look like warriors.

Cons:
- None, I can't think of anything that I don't like. (Leave a comment and tell me if you have anything you do not like)

I am always a fan of paper art so when I first came across Stuart McLachlan's website, my heart just immediately fell in love with his works. Today, it is such an honour to have Stuart on this site and hopefully you will enjoy this Q&A session as much as I do.

Hi Stuart, it is my pleasure to interview you on this site as I am such a big fan of your paper art works. So can you tell me how did you get into paper art? Did you have any paper art training before you entered this industry?
Initially it was due to boredom actually,I have been woking as a freelance illustrator and was searching for a fresh approach to what I did. I was doing well but I didn't seem to be challenged as much as I could be by my work. I also was getting frustrated that my work was being more and more taken over by the computer and really yearned for doing more hand made artwork. While doing crafts at home one weekend with my young daughter, she inspired me to try something out. I really enjoyed what I was doing and the technique of paper seemed to be very natural to me, more so than any other technique I have tried before. I haven't ever had any previous paper art training, actually, I don't know where I would find such a course.

It seems like true artist always like to go back to hand crafted works and I agree, they are more valuable than computer generated works. I admire paper art but I have never approached any paper art artist until now. I do want to know, are there any specific tools and papers you need to use to create the artworks?
I was generally using Arches watercolour paper, but these days I use almost anything that a piece requires as long as it's right.I hand cut everything with an Exacto knife and sometimes use hole punchers , and scissors. Other things I use are glue, of course,and sometimes wire, and velcro to hold sections together if necessary.

Interesting, I have actually never thought using velcro to hold the papers together, now consider I have learned something new! Is it possible to tell me what is the process of making a piece of paper artwork? How many hours does it take to make one artwork?
That's a difficult question as every piece is very different. Basically,I start with an idea that I think will make a strong graphic statement. From this point I will either do a drawing of the design or often I will simply start cutting and building as I go along, until the piece is completed.I cut everything by hand either at home or in my studio in the city (Sydney). It's really intuitive and I let the wok take me where it needs to go, nothing is set in stone and if I find another direction that works better , I will go down that path. It is physically quite difficult on my hands and shoulder as I firstly haver to keep in a rigid position so that I don't accidentally cut myself with a wild stroke. The paper I use is around 300gsm thick and is hard to cut, I don't usually use thin paper because it buckles when glued and is too easily damaged. Instead, I use strong , hardy paper stock. Some artworks may take 4-5 hours, however the combined time to finish the piece I am currently woking on may end up being 60-70 hours. I spread this out over a couple of weeks and generally work at night after I've done any paid illustration work. I do of course get paid to do my paper art but I still do many peices purely for art sake whenever I have time. My art is very varied and each one presents different challenges and takes different times, however, a tight deadline can stimulate amazing speed sometimes.

I have realized intuition is one of the key elements a lot of artists have in common when working on amazing pieces. I believe this is something an artist is born with and why every artist has an unique approach on artworks. I know that you also do illustrations as well, does this skill help you with your paper art creation?
Very much so, having the ability to draw and design is the key to what I do. Being able to pre visualise an image as I do when I begin an illustration, gives me the ability to know if an image is going to be strong or not. If I'm not sure, then I can investigate any idea by drawing it or creating a computer generated rough of it. The other advantage of knowing how to illustrate is that I have a decent colour sense, something that is usually developed over a long period of time. This helps me to pretty much decide whether a paper art piece should be white, black or multi coloured, I don't usually ever regret the choice I make. When doing illustrations you have to make a lot of crucial decisions quickly , due to deadlines and because of this I transfer these skills to my paper art. I don't usually have to stop and restart a piece because as in illustration, I have a long think about the construction and design of an artwork to it's completion and the problems I may encounter before I start.

As my grandma always tells me colour sense is very important to artists, I am glad you have this element built into your mind in an early stage. So, out of all the projects you have done so far, which one do you think is the most challenging? Why is that?
I did a white top hat which was entirely made from watercolour paper and was used for a fashion editorial spread for Vogue. The brim of the hat was built as normal but the top was made as a birdcage with a blue small peacock inside. I started it at 9 p.m. at night and finished it about 14 hours later, no sleep of course. I had no time to draw anything so had to design everything on the fly hoping the decisions I made worked . It was extremely challenging but it worked out really well in the end. I am currently working on a small ship that will be worn on the shoulders of a model . I designed the boat loosely based on the old Dreadnought battleships of the early 1900's. It's my own design but I want it to have all of the rigging and details of an actual ship. Creating the curved and shaped hull of the boat is very difficult as I want it to be pretty smooth. I have started creating the masts , smoke funnels, cannons and all the other complicated deck detail which is very time consuming and complex. I have yet to work out the hooking device that will allow the boat to be attached to the model. Her head has to be set within the centre of the ship as though she is part of it. I always try to produce art works that people don't expect and can't believe that are hand made, therefore they are generally very detailed and not the simplest things to create. I think this is what gives the viewer a buzz when looking at them.

Well, in general, I am in love with your works as they are unique and unpredictable. In the future, other than paper, would you want to use another material to create art works? If so, what would you choose and why?
I use paper right now but I can see many of the things I make being transferred into materials like metal or plastic or fabric, depending on the purpose of the artwork. I would love to do a massive scaled piece of work that would serve as a public sculpture or something of that nature. It would be interesting to mix paper and clothing / fabric to create a wild fashion runway show. I think combining what I do with a fashion designers sensibility would produce some great results ( D&G ?!). I've done this to some extent in photo shoots, but to do a whole show would be quite a blast.

Walk the Walk: Gucci F/W 2012 Collection

Frida Giannini shows the F/W 2012 Gucci collection on the first day of Milan Fashion Week and she brings us to a darker side of the Gucci universe. Even though the colour palette is still associated with the jewel tone, it is rather darker than the previous seasons. Artificial flowers are now being crystallized and they are embellished on the evening gowns. Floral prints are also heavily used in this collection but they are emitting a very dark vibe than what you may have expected. As for the silhouette, Frida is staying the classic Gucci woman look, which she should be elegant and classy, with a little hint of dramatic. This collection may not be as strong as the last F/W season, but still, there are many strong pieces that I can imagine showing up in the future editorials.

Pros:
- Frida is pretty much bring us on a luxurious wildlife field trip by showing us the floral prints, fur, feathers and crystal flowers.
- The floral prints are pretty and help to show the elegance side of a Gucci woman.
- The last few gowns, in my opinion, are almost custom made for Florence Welch. She can totally rock those outfits without any problem.
- the dark jewel tone colour palette actually makes the clothes to look heavier, even though there is sheer material.
- The high boots are very nice.

Cons:
- Even though I like this collection, I think this is not as strong as last F/W collection.

Eye Candies:
- Floral suit
- Floral print skirt
- Feather skirt
- Gowns with crystal embellishments.
- Boots

Walk the Walk: Mary Katrantzou F/W 2012 Collection

While I was not really feeling the S/S 2012 collection because of the slightly off track prints, I am totally in love with this F/W collection. As usual, you have to look at Mary Katrantzou's collection in a more artistic angle to appreciate her "print collage" technique. I really like the silhouettes she created for this collection as they make girls look bold, edgy, confident, but still remain feminine. If I had a daughter (provide I were also a billionaire), I would not mind to purchase the entire collection for her to treat the clothes as collectable items.

Pros:
- Katrantzou's print is always the main gimmick of her collection.
- I like how the show is organized according to colours, this makes the whole show interesting.
- Katrantzou's silhouettes, to me, are always dramatic. She knows how to make a girl look bold and confident.

Cons:
- Are the pieces wearable, that might be the ultimate question for all the fashion lovers.

Eye Candies:
- Everything. Each piece is simply an art piece.

Time[less]: Ulysse Nardin Royal Blue Tourbillon

This watch has been on my wish list a long long time ago...

Royal Blue is one of the complicated watches Ulysse Nardin has ever created. The most special part of it is the "floating" tourbillion - only one side is attached to the mechanical parts. Of course, if the company names it as Royal Blue, you are going to see the blues shades on part of the watch and also on the 12 sapphires to indicate the hours. I think this watch is a very interesting design and classy. It only has 99 pieces in the world and I wonder if I will ever have a chance to see it in real life.

Walk the Walk: McQ Alexander McQueen

Forget about the punk impression you have when you think of McQ because this season, Sarah Burton is changing the game plan and wants you to know it runs the same DNA as the big sister brand Alexander McQueen.

Sarah Burton has created a very dark McQ army by combining the military and Victorian style together. Many of the pieces, especially the menswear, are very structured and sharp in tailoring. In order to have the essence from Alexander McQueen collection, the big hip silhouette is used on women's pieces. By combining the brocade with the signature silhouette, many of the pieces become very dark and edgy. If you are a fan of Alexander McQueen, the last few gowns will instantly remind you of the signature collection.

Pros:
- I love how Sarah Burton uses the Alexander McQueen signature silhouette for this collection. It immediately helps the audience to associate this collection with the main brand.
- I like the brocade pieces a lot. They look very elegant and edgy
- The artificial flower pieces are stunning. They are dramatic and have a strong Alexander McQueen vibe.
- The menswear are very structured and will be easy for a lot of men to carry those looks.

Cons:
- The live stream is really not working for me. I know there is a concept behind it, but it might be better if the live stream is straight forward without any gimmick.

Eye Candies:
- Red brocade skirt
- Black leather jacket with fur sleeves
- Blue/green tartan trench dress
- Green/brown military jacket
- White floral lace gown

Walk the Walk: Giles F/W 2012 Collection

Maybe this is Giles Deacon's interpretation of End of Days, well in a fairy tale sense...

Burn hole print is the first thing that comes to my mind when I look at this collection. I would have never though this print could look pretty on pieces but I was completely wrong. With the fairy tale princess silhouette, this print has created a very dark and sad vibe for a lot of the pieces. I also find this collection to be very dreamy because of the abstract unicorn print. Have you ever thought of having this print on adult fashion pieces? Giles wants you to know this option is possible. Last but not least, the "dying rose" has created a striking impact to the entire collection by letting us know, yes, the collection is pretty much on fire (in a good way).

What do you think of this collection? I think I am truly in love with it!

Pros:
- The collection has a very strong end of days theme. It's chaotic, dramatic, but elegant to wear the pieces
- The burn hole print is amazing, same as the grey/white abstract unicorn print
- The silhouette reminds me of the princesses in all the fairy tales.
- The black tuxedo really stands out and I love it!

Cons:
- The head piece cannot trump last season. The Swan piece is just too bold and dramatic.

Eye Candies:

Walk the Walk: Mulberry F/W 2012 Collection

Taking inspiration from "Where the Wild Things are" may not be something new to the fashion industry, but executing this concept in the right manner is another story. Mulberry latest collection is one successful example.

Emma Hill designs a rather interesting collection for Mulberry this season and since it is inspired by the monsters, there are a lot of furry pieces and the everything is in earthy tone. I really like the tribal prints as they give me a feeling of mystical and retro. Also, for the first time, I actually think the leather pants are very comfortable to wear. Aside from the Del Rey handbag, I think this collection is pretty flawless. What do you think?

Pros:
- I like the "Where the Wild Things Are" inspiration. As expected, there are a lot of furry pieces.
- The colour palette is outstanding, especially the bright orange.
- I really like the print, is very sharp and playful.
- The shoes are pretty cool.
- For the first time, I actually feel the leather pants to be very comfortable to wear.

Cons:
- Can't think of any, unless you are looking for gowns, then this collection will be lacking it.

Eye Candies:
- Brown fur vest
- Abstract print jacket with fur collar
- Black leather pants
- Shoes

Walk the Walk: Burberry Prorsum F/W 2012 Collection

Back in January, Christopher Bailey showed the world his gentlemen collection and it has everything a man will need for next season. Today, he continues to show a strong womenswear collection by combining the London urban and hunting vibe together.

There are so many great things in this collection but I am just going to highlight a few here. Peplum seems to be the major element of this collection as this design is applied on dress and outerwear. This element adds a flare to the classic silhouette. The colour palette is leaning towards the earthy tone which is easy for the ladies to mix and match this collection with their existing wardrobe. One thing that is worth to mention is the ornamental animal-detail on the clutches (men have the ornamental animal-detail umbrellas). I really like this detail add on as it helps to reflect the hunting theme.

Best part of this runway show? I have to say is the raining effect at the end of the show. After watching that scene, my mind starts to associate the word "romantic" to the entire collection.

Pros:
- The peplum design is one of the signature elements of this season and it makes the pieces very elegant and lady like.
- Those ankle boots (Burberry Field Boots) are pretty.
- I love the floral pattern, from what I have seen in the video, the pattern is hand painted.
- I am a fan of the mixed fabrication panels, so modern and pretty.
- The small ornamental animal-detail zipped clutch bags are cute, which really reflects the hunting theme.

Cons:
- I expected I would be seeing some gowns in this season since there are quite a few pieces in the pre fall collection. Nope, nothing.

Eye Candies:
- Cotton tweed trench coat
- Burberry field boots
- Corduroy collar riding jacket
- Tailored cotton riding jacket
- Clutches with animal ornaments
- Floral print peplum skirt

Ray of Inspirology: Miu Miu S/S 2012 Promotion Campaign

The star effects is here again. For this season, Mia Wasikowska (best known for her role in Alice in Wonderland) has become the face of the new Miu Miu campaign. It is shot by David Sims and it seems like Miuccia wants a more simple approach this time around. The portrait style really makes the images to look elegant and classy. That yellow backdrop and the clothes create a huge contrast which helps the viewers to focus on the collection. I really like it, do you?

Walk the Walk: Moschino Cheap And Chic F/W 2012 Collection

This is the first time for Moschino Cheap and Chic to show in London Fashion Week and I think the collection has the vibe that suits this fashion week than the Milan one. Moschino Cheap and Chic is always having this fun and young vibe so you can see a lot of colourful pieces here. One of the major highlights is the cosmetic prints which I think is unique. While I like this collection a lot, I have a feeling that some pieces will be very hard to mix and match with your existing wardrobe. What do you think?

Pros:
- The collection is very young and fun.
- I really like the cosmetic print, it is something different.
- The colour palette is very colourful, not something you will expect from a F/W collection.
- This collection blends well with the others in London Fashion Week.

Cons:
- It is not easy to style this collection. You probably need to check with your existing wardrobe and see if you have pieces that will go along with this collection.

Eye Candies:

Supermarket as the backdrop for an editorial? That sounds right!

In the latest issue of Vogue Mexico, Constance Jablonski is shot by Jean-Francois Campos and it is all about prints! There is a big contrast between the elegant clothes and the super market setting, but art director John Paul Tran has made the editorial work. My favourite photo of this editorial is Constance standing in front of the vegetable section in the Dolce & Gabbana dress, she just blends right in!

Trendology: Converse x Gorillaz S/S 2012 Collection

Converse has recently announced the company is collaboration with Gorillaz, the virtual band! I have been a fan of the group since Clint Eastwood so I am super excited about this project. There are 4 designs and Jamie Hewlett, the co-creator of Gorillaz, has created exclusive prints for this particular collection. You really should keep an eye on this collection if you are a fan of this virtual band!

My eyes are totally on the camouflage one right now.

No no, I am not talking about the Madonna Hard Candy album here, even though that is one of my favourite albums of all time. Anyway...

Kaja is dressed in some really nice evening gowns and the winning point of this spread is the really edgy accessories such as headbands and necklaces. I am not sure what you think about this editorial but I am totally falling in love with the dark mood images.

Trendology: Lanvin Velcro Tennis Sneakers

If my shoe closet only contains sneakers, then I would have bought this in a heartbeat.

This pair of Lanvin tennis sneakers is from the S/S 2012 collection. I like the scaled leather and also the orange trimming on the shoes. I find the velcro tab to be an interesting design because it adds a retro vibe to the sneakers. If your hobby is to collect great sneakers, I recommend you add this to your collection.

Trendology: Alexander McQueen Jaw Skull sequined box clutch

Alexander McQueen clutch is not a new thing, but looking at this particular design makes me wonder, can Sarah Burton top this design?

This gold clutch is covered in gold sequins and the skull's eyes and teeth are made of Swarovski crystals. This item is definitely dramatic and will catch a lot of attentions if you are going to carry it at an event. If this concept could transform into a briefcase for men, I bet I will be lining up for it.

Prada always has amazing accessories for every season and this time around, it is all about the jewel studded pieces.

One of the signature items in this collection has to be the studded briefcase. It has a very strong Western flavour to it and the red & blue jewel studs work very well with the black & baby blue leather combination. Yes, this is a statement fashion piece so there might be a chance this item won't be relevant in the next season. Nevertheless, it is a stunning piece!
