Here are some options to consider that will offer more space, make your small studio look more spacious and provide more storage space. If you are living in a studio flat there are several plausible solutions for you to consider, the most obvious option would be to fit a small bed and a small sofa into the room however, depending on the size of the room, this may not leave much space for other bedroom or living room furniture which in itself defeats the purpose of having a sofa in the first place. If you cannot socialise in the room comfortably then you are probably better simply having a bed in the room, push it against a wall and place pillows on the wall when visitors are around to give the impression of a sofa, the key is to choose furniture that is not obviously bedroom furniture, get rid of all teddies and bedroom paraphernalia, keep the bed linen very simple and when guests are visiting throw a heavy weight throw over the bed and scatter pillows on it to give the impression that it is a seat. There are several bed frames on the market that are a divan/day bed style with support on the back and sides of the bed, making it look similar to a sofa than a place to sleep. This idea of having a smart bed double as a seating area is also a good idea for students living in student accommodation where you have one room for yourself, another option for students is buying a sofa bed or futon, the advantage being that if you do want people around then you can fold it back up to give you more space.

Again, sofa beds can be a good option for a studio apartment for its functionality but it may not be the comfiest of beds in the world. If you have bought a studio flat, or if you bedroom is particularly small, it may be wise to do something more drastic not only to give you more space but doing so may increase the value of the property. A mezzanine is a very clever way of getting more storage space for a small bedroom and can create a whole new area for living space. A mezzanine is an intermediate floor constructed between the main floors of a building, in a single room, how much room a mezzanine can give you is entirely dependant upon the height on the ceilings, the most common practise is to place a mattress and sleeping area up on the “second” floor providing you with a new bedroom with an alcove area that can be used for wardrobes or cupboards. However, how well a mezzanine works is entirely dependant upon the size of the existing room and getting a good architect, and if anything just raising your bed to chest height will give you enough extra space to put in some high quality storage. If your bedroom is still too small for this then another option is a Murphy’s pull down bed; a bed that is usually hidden vertically inside a cupboard but can then be pulled down into a horizontal position for sleeping. The benefit of this obviously being that when the bed is hidden away, duvet and all, the bedroom can transform into a living area giving you the best of both worlds. Murphy’s beds are most suited placed in a cupboard unit that stretches an entire wall so you can have the bed and wardrobes on either side, so that when vertical there is no hint of a bed at all. If you can fit a bed into your room, and a sofa, but not really your clothes or your CD’s then you can purchase a divan bed with drawers underneath, or as suggested above pay for a second floor to be built under which you can use for storage or if you simply cannot afford that invest in under bed storage from somewhere like IKEA who specialise in affordable space saving solutions.

I need to decorate my studio apartment. I am in the market for a futon or lounge chair and I have limited space, a limited budget and to top it off I have a bad back, so I need something comfortable I am young so I want something hip and modern. With your back, I’d suggest getting a really cheap futon frame, and then spend the majority of the money on a more expensive futon. I’d go with one that was at least 5-6 inches thick.

Bunk Bed and Futon Bedding Options

Your kids are so excited that you finally got them a bunk bed.  It is all set up and looks beautiful in the bedroom.  The kids sleep in it one night and the room looks a mess.  The sheets are pulled out from under the mattress and the comforter has fallen on the floor.  You attempt to make the bed up but it is a job.  You can’t seem to get it looking like it did in those photos of the bed when you purchased it.  You wonder if this bed was really a good choice.  Well, don’t dispair.  With a few changes in your bedding, this bed can look as good as any other bed in the house and be easy to make too.

First and foremost, you need sheets that are called attached sheets.  The fitted sheet and the straight sheet are attached at the foot or on the side.  When they are attached at the side, all you have to do is pull the top sheet across the fitted sheet and it’s done.  This keeps the top sheet on the bed during the night.  These sheets are available in a variety of colors and styles to suit every taste.

With the sheets fitting nicely, you might want a nice comforter on top.  A regular comforter or blanket will come off easily.  They make a comforter for bunk beds called a bunk bed cap.  It is also known as a bunkie, hugger or snuggler.  It has a fitted bottom so it stays in place during the night and makes up nicely during the day.  These are not just for bunk beds.  They work well on twin or full beds, trundle beds or any bed with a footboard. 

Futon bunk beds are another bed where choice of bedding needs to be right in order to keep them looking tidy.  Futons need a gripper under the mattress so it doesn’t slide when it is in the couch position.  There are also futon covers that look just like a couch with colorful upholstery and designs.  They may come in faux leather, faux suede, denim, and even genuine leather.  These make a great alternative to a couch for small apartments or dorm rooms with the sleeping area right above.

Consider all the available options in bedding for bunk beds and futon bunk beds.  It isn’t a necessity but it does make owning one of these beds more pleasant.  You can have a smart, space saving bed that looks nice too.

So you have a small apartment. You are possibly wondering, how do I make my small space look comfortable and inviting with out looking cluttered? I have your answer. Try creating rooms with the use of decorative screens. It can make a single room look like two or more rooms are there. Also remember your curtains, they should be allowing the light in, the more light you allow in the bigger the space looks. Use a small bistro table as a dining table. It is intimate and makes for a great coffee talk spot. If you are lucky enough to have some one in your apartment remember to always hide your laundry. Laundry laying around makes the apartment appear cluttered and small. Plants are a great way to make your room appear bigger. Try hanging them from the ceiling or by using hooks on the wall. Don’t forget the importance of mirrors. The use of mirrors can make your small apartment look large. Use a focal point and angle your mirror towards it, it gives the illusion of depth. Most importantly make sure you always have a clean space, it is always bigger when it is clean.

Ok so now you have gone and cleaned, you are noticing that the apartment still looks small. Question your storage. You need some ideas for storage you say? Well I am full of them. Look around and if you notice you have lots of magazines lying around get yourself a magazine holder. It is a handy little box that is decorative to your specific likes and it cleans up your tables of clutter. Get your self a footrest that has storage inside of it. It is nice for when the surprise guest comes over and you need to store something quickly. A coffee table with storage underneath it is also a wise choice. The more storage you have that isn’t added clutter makes your life easier. Wall shelves help to eliminate tabletop mess. Put your collectible gnomes on a small wall shelf and look at all the free space you have just created for yourself. All of the suggestions presented here to you are easy do it yourself projects. You can get most of these easy to use items at your local all purpose store and hardware store.
