If you add the micro lending mechanisms and the rapid growth of mobile based banking systems in Africa, I referred to yesterday, this could be the beginning of the end of the hegemony of the large banks and credit card systems.

As turbulence and change define the socio-economic landscape that brands play in, scenario planning is an increasingly valuable tool for brand mangers to embrace. Scenario planning provided one of the foundations for respected marketing academic Philip Kotler's recent book, Chaotics: The Business of Managing and Marketing in the Age of Turbulence, which he co-authored with business strategist John Caslione.

The brand is probably the most valuable, albeit volatile asset, a company has today. If 10 of Coca Cola's factories where blown up in terrorist attacks Coca Cola would prevail with just minor damages, but if the Coca Cola brand was connected to something deeply unethical, it might destroy the company.

Just look at Tiger Woods...

Well, scenario planning will not hinder catastrophes or stop the effects of changes in the environment, but it might prepare management in advance. And if you are prepared you might change course, take precautions, or at least develop a plan for what you should do to minimize the effects of any attacks on the brand.

What's Up With Virtual Worlds? [ANALYSIS]

Have they died? Nope!

Just because things move out from the lime light doesn’t mean that they disappear. But the air of hipness might have faded a bit… What is happening is most likely exactly what is happening to any hype - it follows the hype curve. We all know that to weave a thicker and lasting web of interest and activity you need more than just social interaction, but finding out what sticks is an iterative process, that doesn’t stop when the initial hype fades. That is when the experimentation phase actually starts.

The result of the hype period is an existing technical platform that works pretty well, a huge group of users who is at least slightly familiar with virtual worlds, a money structure which is connected and tested towards the real world. What is lacking is more ideas and business models that apply the tool of virtual worlds to other areas where they can evolve a step further.

Virtual worlds are definitely here to stay, but through which door they will come in to the daily lives of billions of users is yet to be found. Maybe it is through games, which is most likely now, but it could also be through e g e-commerce, education or telework…

It seems like this is a day when I'm delving deeper than before. This was an interesting list of underreported IT-related posts.

My picks here is that the explosive effects of spreading use and changing patterns of technology is really starting to stress the system:

- spreading use of new media is pushing the limits of the wireless spectrum (no 1)

- People with criminal intent is realizing that it (again) is more easy to fool people than to break technological security structures - and that doesn't necessary say as much about tech security as it do about people... (no 3)

- the flood of innovations which leads to patent applications (which probably is a very small part of all innovation that is going on) is swamping the US Patent system so bad that it seems to break (no 9)
