In an announcement made this afternoon MacKinnon was dealt to the Halifax Mooseheads. In exchange, the Drakkar receive 19-year-old Carl Gelinas, 18-year-old Francis Turbide, along with three first-round picks (2012, 2013, and the Quebec Remparts pick in 2013).

The QMJHL currently has a trade freeze in place until Aug. 1, but league commissioner Gilles Courteau called this "extenuating curcumstances" in allowing the deal to be made.

"The fact that Nathan MacKinnon will play for a team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League next year is fantastic news for our league," Courteau said in a statement. "I would like to salute the excellent work of both organizations."

MacKinnon skipped the QMJHL Draft indicating that he had no intention of suiting up for the Drakkar. He instead spent the weekend skating with the USHL's Omaha Lancers.

MacKinnon spent last season at Shattuck St. Mary's prep school in Minnesota.

The hockey world lost a great man with the passing of NHL Vice-President of Central Scouting EJ McGuire.

Gary Meagher, Senior Vice- President of Communications for the National Hockey League, wrote an outstanding column on McGuire that was published on Thursday. <a href="http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=558605
In the tournament’s opening game, the Swiss opened up a 4-0 lead through one period and held on for a 4-3 victory over Germany. Nino Neiderreiter scored a goal and an assist for the Swiss, who chased German starter Philipp Grubauer from the game in the opening frame.

Inti Pestoni also had a goal and an assist for Switzerland while Gregory Hoffman chipped in with two assists. Matthias Plachta had a goal and an assist for the Germans.

Canada scored three unanswered goals in the third period to beat Russia 6-3. With the two teams tied at three heading into the final period, Ryan Johansen, Brayden Schenn and Curtis Hamilton scored for Canada. Schenn had a goal and an assist in the win while Jaden Schwartz set up a pair of goals for Canada.

Dmitri Orlov and Yuri Urachev had two assists each for Russia.

Sweden scored the biggest margin of victory on opening day by beating Norway 7-1. Norway managed to keep the game close through one period, trailing 2-0 after 20 minutes. Patrick Cehlin led Sweden with two goals and an assist in the win. Tim Erixon, John Klingberg, Sebastian Wannstrom and Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and an assist each for Sweden.

Anton Lander chipped in with a pair of assists in the win. Eirik Borresen scored the lone goal for Norway.

In the final game of the night, Nick Bjugstad scored at 3:08 of overtime, giving the United States a 3-2 win over Finland. Jason Zucker and Justin Faulk also scored for the Americans while Joonas Natinen and Iiro Pakarinen scored for Finland.

Today we look at some of the players to watch around the league.

Barrie – Peter DiSalvo (Goaltender): DiSalvo takes over again as the Colts starting goaltender with the trade of Mavric Parks to Saginaw earlier this summer. With the amount of turnover from last year, DiSalvo should expect to see a lot of shots this winter and will be a key to any success in Barrie this winter.

Belleville – Michael Curtis (Centre); Austen Brassard (Right Wing): After a successful rookie season on a struggling team, Curtis can expect to be an important piece of the Bulls offense. Brassard, picked up from Windsor last season, will also have a major impact on the re-building process.

Brampton – Jacob Riley (Goaltender): Another goaltender who finds himself on the hotseat, Riley is taking over for Patrick Killeen, who turns pro this season. Riley is one of just two 17-year-olds expected to assume the starting role with their respective teams (Tyson Teichmann of Belleville is the other).

Erie – Andrew Yogan (Centre): The New York Rangers prospect will look to become a more consistent scoring threat for the Otters as one of the elder statesmen of the team.

Guelph – Peter Holland (Centre); Taylor Beck (Right Wing): A team that struggled last winter, Holland and Beck are expected to carry the offensive load and provide leadership to a young core.

Kingston – Taylor Doherty (Right Defense): With the graduation of Brian Lashoff, Doherty will be looked to even further as an anchor on the blueline. Should Erik Gudbranson stick with the Florida Panthers, Doherty will carry even more of a load.

Kitchener – Julian Melchiori (Left Defense): Picked up in a trade from Oshawa, Melchiori turned down a scholarship to the University of Massachusetts (Lowell) to play with the Rangers. A late birthdate, Melchiori adds a veteran presence to a solid group of defensemen.

London – Jarred Tinordi (Left Defense): The Montreal prospect helps shore up a blueline that lost Steven Tarasuk to graduation and saw Matt Ashman dealt earlier this summer.

Mississauga – JP Anderson (Goaltender): Passed over in the 2010 NHL Draft, Anderson will look to bounce back and prove scouts wrong this season. And what a better way to do it than taking over the starting role for the Memorial Cup hosts.

Niagara – Ryan Strome (Right Wing); Mark Visentin (Goaltender): Strome was a key piece of the trade that saw the IceDogs deal Alex Pietrangelo to Barrie. For Visentin, 2010-11 will be a chance for him to prove that his early selection in the NHL Draft wasn’t a mistake.

Oshawa – Boone Jenner (Centre); Colin Suellentrop (Right Defense): Both Jenner and Suellentrop are expected to be selected in the top four rounds of next summer’s NHL Draft.

Ottawa – Tyler Toffoli (Right Wing): The Los Angeles prospect will look to get off to a good start this year and carry it out for a full season. The 18-year-old had a tough start last year and had to work through some injuries but finished the year strong.

Owen Sound – Joey Hishon (Centre): Hishon missed time due to injury last season and managed to put up solid numbers offensively. He impressed scouts enough to be selected in the first round by Colorado in June. An injury-free season will allow him to really show what he’s capable of.

Peterborough – Jason Missiaen (Goaltender): Unsigned by the Montreal Canadiens after being drafted in 2008, Missisaen is playing for a contract this winter.

Plymouth – Scott Wedgewood (Goaltender): Remember his performance in the playoffs against Windsor? This winter will be a chance for him to prove he is every bit as good as he looked in that game.

Saginaw – Brandon Saad (Left Wing): Saad was Saginaw’s first round pick in 2008. After two years playing south of the border, Saad joins Saginaw as a potential top five pick in next summer’s NHL Draft.

Sarnia – John Cullen (Goaltender); Shayne Campbell (Goaltender); Jesse Raymond (Goaltender): Plain and simple, one of these three will take the starters role for the Sting. The only question is which one?

Sault Ste. Marie – Brandon Archibald (Right Defense); Brock Beukeboom (Right Defense): After pairing with Michael Quesnele and Jacob Muzzin on the top two defense pairings last season, Archibald and Beukeboom will now anchor the blueline.

Sudbury – John McFarland (Centre): Will the real John McFarland please stand up? The Florida prospect has plenty of skill but doesn’t show it nearly enough.

Windsor – Jack Campbell (Goaltender): Not to add to the pressure of being a first round NHL prospect, but Campbell is the goaltender for a team looking to become the first in CHL history to win three-straight Memorial Cups.

-The speeches prior to each pick are the reason why the first round takes forever

-And Hall gets selected first overall by Edmonton. btw, Hall makes it four straight years that an OHL player is selected with the first pick

-And the Taylor vs. Tyler debate is officially over as the Bruins select Seguin

-Florida now up and the question is...do they take one of the 'Big 3' defensemen (Gudbranson, Gormley, or Fowler)?

-And the run on defensemen has started as Florida takes Gudbranson

-Columbus takes Portland forward Ryan Johansen while the Islanders use the next pick to take his teammate Nino Niederreiter

-The Lightning then use their pick to take Brett Connolly

The Hurricanes continue the run on forwards by taking Jeff Skinner of the Kitchener Rangers

-Alexander Burmistrov of the Barrie Colts is the newest member of the Atlanta Thrashers

-Quite the run on forwards as Minnesota takes Mikael Granlund 9th overall

-Pretty surprising that neither Gormley or Fowler have gone yet

-Surprised that the Rangers take Dylan McIlrath at 10 with Fowler and Gormley on the board still.

-The first American has been selected as the Stars take goaltender Jack Campbell

-And Fowler finally selected as he goes 12th to the Anaheim Ducks

-And Gormley goes with the next pick to Phoenix

-Jaden Schwartz goes to St. Louis

-Los Angeles trades up and selects defenseman Derek Forbort from the US Under-18 team

-St. Louis picks up the 16th pick form Ottawa and selects Russian forward Vladimir Tarasenko

-The Colorado Avalanche surprise a lot of people taking Owen Sound forward Joey Hishon

-Austin Watson selected by the Nashville Predators

-Florida back at it, selecting high school forward Nick Bjugstad

-Pittsburgh selects California-born forward Beau Bennett of Penticton of the BCHL

-The Detroit Red Wings go the college route and select Riley Sheahan of Notre Dame, nephew of Rocky DiPietro, formerly of the CFL's Hamilton Tiger Cats

-The Montreal Canadiens trade up and select Jarred Tinordi, son of former NHL'er Mark

-Mark Pysyk is selected by Buffalo at 23 while the Chicago Blackhawks select forward Kevin Hayes with the following pick

-Quinton Howden of the Moose Jaw Warriors is selected by Florida with their third pick of the first round

-Evgeny Kuznetsov is selected by the Washington Capitals 26th overall

-Phoenix goes off the board and selects Niagara IceDogs goaltender Mark Visentin

-The San Jose Sharks select forward Charlie Coyle

-Good on the Ducks for taking Emerson Etem, the California kid

-Final pick of the opening round goes to the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hawks proceed to deal the pick to the Islanders for a pair of second rounders.
The biggest debate is whether the Edmonton Oilers will use the first pick to select Taylor Hall of the Windsor Spitfires or Tyler Seguin of the Plymouth Whalers.

How the first round of the draft plays out could be extremely interesting. The top five could play out numerous different ways. Does Edmonton take Hall or Seguin. Which defenseman does Florida take third? Erik Gudbranson? Cam Fowler? Brandon Gormley?

Here’s how I see the top 15 picks playing out:

1. Edmonton: Taylor Hall, Windsor – Hall adds another young, offensively-skilled winger to the mix.
2. Boston: Tyler Seguin, Plymouth – The Bruins add a young centre that will not be expected to step right in next winter.
3. Florida: Erik Gudbranson, Kingston – A solid defenseman, Gudbranson gives Florida a physical defenseman who is solid defensively and can chip in offensively.
4. Columbus: Brandon Gormley, Moncton – Gormley adds a complete defenseman to the Blue Jackets lineup. Gormley is likely the most complete defenseman in the draft.
5. New York Islanders: Cam Fowler, Windsor – Fowler adds an offensive element to the Islanders blueline. Fowler will provide the organization with a nice complement on the blueline to John Tavares.
6. Tampa Bay: Brett Connolly, Prince George – Despite seeing limited action in 2009-10, Connolly is highly-skilled. The young forward was seen as a possible top three pick before the season.
7. Carolina: Nino Niederreiter, Portland – The Hurricanes need to add to their offense and the Swiss star fits the bill.
8. Atlanta: Vladimir Tarasenko, Novosibirsk – Highly-skilled, the only concern will be whether the Thrashers can get the Russian forward to report.
9. Minnesota: Ryan Johansen, Portland – A linemate of Niderreiter in Portland, Johansen brings a little bit of everything to the Wild lineup.
10. New York Rangers: Alexander Burmistrov, Barrie- Looking to add an offensively-skilled forward, the Rangers do just that with Brumistrov. The Russian forward has already adjusted smoothly to being in North America.
11. Dallas: Jack Campbell, US Under-18 – The Stars add some depth to their goaltending by taking the best netminder in the pool.
12. Anaheim: Jonathan Merrill, US Under-18 – With the retirement of Scott Niedermeyer, the Ducks will be looking to add to their depth on the blueline.
13. Phoenix: Quinton Howden, Moose Jaw – Howden can do a little bit of everything and fits well in the Coyotes system.
14. St. Louis: Jeff Skinner, Kitchener – One of the top goal-scorers in the draft, the Blues will be looking to take the best forward available.
15. Florida: Austin Watson, Peterborough - After taking Gudbranson with the third pick, the Panthers add a skilled, highly-competitive player.

And the rest of the first round:
16. Ottawa: Derek Forbort, US Under-18
17. Colorado: Mark Pysyk, Edmonton
18. Nashville: Ludvig Rensfeldt, Brynas
19. Los Angeles: Emerson Etem, Medicine Hat
20. Pittsburgh: Mikael Granlund, HIFK Helsinki
21. Detroit: Johan Larsson, Brynas
22. Phoenix: Evgeny Kuznetsov, Chelyabinsk
23. Buffalo: Tyler Pitlick, Minnesota State
24. Atlanta: Brock Nelson, Warroad
25. Vancouver: Jason Zucker, US Under-18
26. Washington: Kirill Kabanov, Moncton
27. Montreal: Stanislav Galiev, Saint John
28. San Jose: Charlie Coyle, South Shore
29. Anaheim: Nick Bjugstad, Blaine
30. Chicago: Calvin Pickard, Seattle

Just days after acquiring all-star goaltender Olivier Roy from the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, the Maineiacs acquired the first overall pick in the QMJHL draft on Saturday in a three-team trade.

The trade overshadowed a number of moves on draft day, which included the Maineiacs sending Roy to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan for the fifth overall pick, a second round pick and third round pick on Saturday as well as a fifth round pick next year and a first round pick in 2012.

The Maineiacs acquired the first pick in exchange for 19-year-old Marc-Andre Carre and first round picks in 2013 and 2014. Lewiston then sent the fifth overall pick, acquired from Acadie Bathurst, along with their second, third and fifth round picks, and the Titan's first round pick in 2012 to Baie Comeau in exchange for the Drakkar's second round pick and first round pikcs in 2013 and 2014.

With the pick, the Maineiacs selected defenseman Dillon Fournier. The Halifax Mooseheads held the second pick and selected winger Luca Ciampini. With the third pick, Chicoutimi selected defenseman Dominic Poulin. Val d'Or selected goaltender Francois Tremblay. Baie Comeau rounded out the top five by selecting centre Frederick Gamelin.

Baie Comeau traded down in the draft after GM Steve Ahern said on Friday he would trade down if highly-touted Michael Matheson's vow to go to the NCAA seemed legit.

Halifax caught the attention of some when they used their second round pick on centre Darcy Ashley. Ashley has a committment to Maine.

The trade of the top pick overshadowed a couple other big deals on draft day.

Shawinigan dealt Nashville Predators second rounder Charles Olivier Roussel to Montreal in exchange for a pair of players along with two draft picks.

Montreal also acquired the rights to Harvard (NCAA) forward, and Montreal Canadiens prospect Louis Leblanc. Montreal acquired his rights, along with a third round pick next year in exchange for Guillaume Asselin and a first round pick next year.

The latest is the Barrie Colts hiring of Dale Hawerchuk. The former Winnipeg Jets star was the coach of the Orangeville Crushers, a team he was also part-owner of. The announcement was made on Friday morning.

Hawerchuk takes over for Marty Williamson, who took the GM/coach position in Niagara earlier this week. His hiring came after the IceDogs cleaned house, letting go the entire coaching staff as well as GM Dave Brown.

In other changes around the league, the Sudbury Wolves hired Trent Cull as their new coach while Blaine SMith takes over as GM. The hirings come after Mike Foligno stepped down from his role as GM/coach.

In Peterborough, a house-cleaning led to the hiring of former NHL'er Dave Reid as GM. Following his hiring, Reid brought in Mike Pelino as coach while Wayne Clark, Ron Tugnutt and Jody Hull were brough in as assistants.

The Oshawa Generals added two new assistant coaches after they released associate coach RIch Ricci, assistant coach Randy Fitzgerald and Tugnutt, who served as goaltending coach.

Within a week, the Generals announced the hirings of former Peterborough assistand Joe Cirella and Roger Hunt, who was with the Jr. A Milton IceHawks.

The Ottawa 67's have also announced that coach Chris Byrne will also take on the role of assistant GM.

Regardless of what you think of the Windsor Spitfires, the way they marched to their second straight Memorial Cup title was impressive. There’s no other way to say it.

After losing three straight games to open the Western Conference Final against the Kitchener Rangers, the Spitfires went on a 12-game winning streak to finish the year. The 12 wins included four against a tough Rangers team as well as four more against the Barrie Colts in the OHL Final.

And what a way to go out for some of the Windsor players.

Harry Young, the anchor of the Spitfires blueline, capped off his OHL career following the win over Brandon on Sunday night. Young is one of the more unheralded players on the Spitfires roster.

When talking about the group of defensemen the Spitfires boast, names like Ryan Ellis and Cam Fowler come up. Mark Cundari’s name is another that comes up often.

A rock on the blueline, Young was a steady influence.

Dale Mitchell returned from the AHL for another shot at a title. The 21-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs prospect started the year with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL and wasn’t expected back. All he did after his return was bolster an already-potent offense.

And Scott Timmins. Along with having one of the best playoff beards in all of junior hockey, Timmins is Mr. Everything. It doesn’t matter if it’s killing off a lengthy 5-on-3 or scoring a big goal, Timmins is the kind of player you want on the ice.

And what about Taylor Hall? Say what you want about him, he’s one of the most highly-skilled players in junior hockey and he showed it in leading the Memorial Cup in scoring. And that’s after getting run over by Brandon Wheat Kings defenseman Travis Hamonic in the opening game.

Who can forget the contributions of Cundari, Adam Henrique, Greg Nemisz, and Eric Wellwood? All four, also likely played their final games of junior hockey in the Memorial Cup win.

Regardless of whether you love or hate the Spitfires, their accomplishments of the 2008-09 and 2009-10 OHL seasons was certainly something to watch

A win on Tuesday night and the Spitfires can become the first back-to-back winners of the OHL title since the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in 1991 and 1992.

One of the differences in the series has been the play of Spitfires goaltender Philipp Grubauer. The sophomore goaltender has been solid in the series, especially in game three where he was the difference between a 5-2 win and a much closer score.

Speaking of difference-makers, Colts forwards Bryan Cameron and Luke Pither have been somewhat disappointing in the series.

Cameron, who scored 53 goals during the regular aeason, has not found the back of the net in the series and, despite generating some scoring chances in game three, doesn't have a goal in the final.

Pither scored 36 goals and 94 points during the regular season and had 15 points going into the OHL final. The overage forward has just one assist in the series.

Speaking of the OHL final, the OHL announced that forwards Zac Rinaldo and Darren Archibald of the Colts and Adam Wallace of the Spitfires have been suspended indefinitely.

Rinaldo was suspended for making contact with an official during game three. Wallace's suspension stems from a late hit he threw in the third period on the Colts Matt Kennedy.

Archibald finds himself suspended after running Grubauer in the final minute. With the Spitfires up 5-2, Archibald proceeded to run over Grubauer behind the Spitfires goal while he was out to play the puck. The Colts forward was given a match penalty for charging.
