How to rent a car without borrowing trouble

If your vacation includes use of a rental car, a little knowledge about auto insurance could preserve your peace of mind and save you money. Consult with your agent and check your policy for coverage, limits and deductible amounts. You may be able to save money by declining the insurance offered by the rental company if your own policy provides the coverage you need. If you are involved in an accident while driving a rental, you could be liable for damage to the auto and any resulting injuries. You could also be responsible for the rental agency’s lost income and the diminished value of the rental car, if damaged. In addition, you may be responsible for losses other than collision, such as fire, theft or vandalism, while the rental is in your possession. Drivers already named on your personal auto policy may be covered for use of a rental car within the United States. However, if the rental contract limits who can drive the vehicle, be aware of the restrictions and act accordingly. Some personal auto policies are contingent on the language of the rental contract, so you may not be covered if you let someone else drive the vehicle. And, if you don’t have an auto policy of your own, the rental company’s insurance may be your only option. Some personal auto policies cover collision losses to rental cars only if you already have collision coverage on your owned autos, subject to the policy deductible. Other policies offer “first-dollar” coverage on rented vehicles through their liability coverage, meaning you pay no deductible on a covered loss. Purchasing an umbrella policy can further protect your interests by increasing your liability coverage. The umbrella also may extend your coverage territory beyond that of your auto policy. However, when traveling abroad, you may need to purchase the insurance offered by the rental company, because foreign countries may not recognize your U.S. policy. Your personal auto policy may also provide coverage for rental of other types of vehicles: trailers, such as do-it-yourself moving trailers; pickups; vans; and trucks under a specified weight limit. Take time as you prepare for vacation to assure that the right auto coverage is in place; then relax and enjoy.

Did you pay a tax penalty for not having Healthcare in 2014?

If you have just learned what the “cost” was for not having health insurance in 2014, there is still time to help lower the cost of the penalty you might pay in 2015! This year, you will pay $325 per person, or 2% of household income, whichever is higher, for not having health insurance. You may be eligible for a special enrollment period coming up during tax time, to sign up for coverage for the remainder of 2015. This special enrollment period begins March 15, 2015 and runs through April 30, 2015. Take a minute to contact Jan Shaffer so that you won’t have to pay the full penalty on your 2015 tax return! Do you need help with healthcare?

With the fall colors, we are entering another season of change. Open enrollment is just around the corner for healthcare. Whether you are on Medicare, and want to check options for a Medigap, and/or a PDP (Prescription Drug Plan), or you have been thinking about a different Medicare Advantage policy, now is the time to make changes. Medicare open enrollment is from Oct. 15-Dec. 7. When you make a change, the new policy will take effect Jan. 1, 2015. You can also make a change to your personal or family health plan this fall. Open enrollment for affordable healthcare is from Nov. 15 - Feb. 15, 2015. If you want to make a change in the plan you chose last year, you can have it in effect for Jan. 1 if you sign up by Dec. 15. Didn’t sign up for healthcare last year, but still interested? You have until Feb. 15, 2015 to sign up for coverage in 2015. There are more plans available this year. Open enrollment is the time to see if you are eligible for any tax credits and/or subsidies to help offset the cost. We have many options whether we look on or off the marketplace. Two associates earn prestigious designation.

John Kujawa and Beth Rohde have earned their Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation. This is the industry’s premier professional certification to cover the important aspects of the insurance field. There are five separate institutes including class time and exams. The five CIC institutes are Personal Lines, Commercial Casualty, Commercial Property, Life & Health and Agency Management. Congratulations John and Beth!

Future Insurance Agency is pleased to announce the addition of two new employees, Jason Campbell and Kyle O’boyle. Kyle recently graduated from SVSU with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing. While at SVSU, Kyle also played for their baseball team. Kyle and his wife Sarah, have been life-long residents of Midland County. Kyle and his wife recently celebrated the birth of their first child, Adalynn. Jason graduated from Kirtland Community College in 2007 with a degree in Criminal Justice. Jason was a Police Officer for six years. Jason recently moved to Saginaw Township after living in Gladwin County for 23 years.
