Early exposure to science is an important element of producing world class scientists, engineer, physicians, science teachers, business people, and policy makers. To achieve this goal, we are excited and pleased to announce that Pakistan Society of Computational Science/Biology (PSCS/PSCB) has launched ” High School Summer Science Research Program (HSSSRP)” project and requesting applications from interested faculty members and high school students. This summer Science Research project will engage students early in their education where they will learn from their mentors how they perform cutting edge research, what inspires them and how to pursue science at college and University.

The purpose of HSSSRP is to promote science at school level and give high school students hands-on research experience by working on research projects with top class research scientists affiliated with public and private Universities in different parts of Pakistan. We hope that this experience will encourage our students for science and have positive impact on student interest in careers in science disciplines.

The selected students will be attached with interested research mentors. The research projects may involve experimental, theoretical or computer based research. It is expected that selected students will participate actively in the science projects and learn novel research methods and will complete the projects during summer time. The students will present their research projects at poster as well as oral presentation session at PSCB/PSCB annual meetings to be held in Fall of each year. The students will obtain key credentials that will help them compete for graduate school, medical school, fellowships, and permanent positions in Pakistan and abroad.

The one way to enter into the list of developed countries is to promote science and technology at all levels in academia and industry. Our young and experienced faculty members working at public and private Universities in Pakistan are the main source of inspiration and hope for our coming generation and future scientists. They are the role model for our kids and young students. They can motivate and inspire our young students at the early stage of their school years. Sometimes a little inspiration from a scientist can change the whole life of a student. We request our faculty members to step up and lead our coming generation to the 21th century. It is a community service and all of us to pay back to our community. We have to make a transition from living a life to making a life. We hope that our faculty members will take a lead and take our students to 21th century.

Waleed Bashir from Khuzdar, this 15 year old Pakistani recently bagged the Grand Winner position, along with a gold medal, at the International Infomatrix Asia Computer Competition, held between April 18 and 21 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Infomatrix is an annual international computer project competition which aims at bringing together computer science students from across Asia. Although the Infomatrix competitions have been held since 2003, this was the first International Computer Project Olympiad.

This means that Bashir beat out competitors and projects from over 20 countries. Participating nations included Russia, India, Bangladesh, Georgia, Bosnia, Ukraine, Kyrghzstan, Azerbaijan, and Kenya, and judges had to choose between hundreds of projects. They chose Bashir’s ‘Green Automation’ project .

Bashir, a ninth grader at the Quetta chapter of Pakturk International Schools & Colleges, designed an automation system that illustrates how to control a greenhouse with only a computer and an internet connection. With heat, water level, humidity and other factors controlled through strategically installed sensors, there is virtually no need for human attendants,.

That’s not all; the energy required for the functioning of the system is provided by movable solar panels that follow the position of the sun for the best possible energy recovery.

“The honor and the pride belong to my country, Pakistan. They belong to my school and teacher, and to my parents,” he said. “Carrying our flag on an international platform, with dignity and honour, was my dream,” he said.

In addition to this, students from Pakturk schools across the country hold countless awards. Through many international competitions held in 2012, the Quetta chapter of the same institution won a gold medal in Turkmenistan and a silver medal in Turkey.
