G Data analysis shows the dominance of this dangerous type of malware

Along with phishing campaigns, banking Trojans are the principal method chosen by cyber criminals to attack users and manipulate online transactions. The G Data Security Labs analysis for the first quarter of 2013 revealed that ZeuS Trojans and variants of these are currently the commonest programs used to launch such attacks, representing more than half of all infections detected during the first three months of this year. The ZeuS clone Citadel was one of the biggest culprits. The number of infections has increased slightly compared to the last quarter of 2012, even though arrests have once again been making life difficult for cyber criminals. G Data expects the number of dangerous malware programs to continue to rise in the coming months.

Cyber crime 3.0: malicious app targeting mTANs

G Data discovers supposed security certificate for Android mobile devices

Cyber criminals are currently targeting Android mobile devices to steal mTANs and PINs for online bank accounts. The criminals do so by using an email supposedly coming from Postbank, which tries to convince users to install an "SSL certificate app". If users access the link in the email via their smartphone or tablet, they are taken to a website that provides the supposed SSL certificate app and installation instructions. Once installed, the malicious app, which claims to make mobile online banking more secure, spies on mTANs and PINs and sends them to the perpetrators. This enables criminals to manipulate online banking transactions and divert money to other accounts during transfers. Customers who secure their Android devices with G Data MobileSecurity 2 are protected from this malware.

Active hybrid protection closes holes and makes surfing, online banking and online shopping safe

Today G Data launches its new security solutions for home users. With the 2014 security generation, G Data once again sets the standard when it comes to security. G Data AntiVirus 2014, G Data InternetSecurity 2014 and G Data TotalProtection 2014 now come with an active hybrid protection technology, G Data CloseGap. The new technology "Made in Germany" quickly closes holes in the computer's defence ring and saves resources. G Data CloseGap combines signature-based and proactive protection technologies in a new, insurmountable wall of defence. For example, the BankGuard module, also recently developed, offers defence against dangerous banking Trojans in real time without relying on signatures – whether the malware is one hour or one second old. Thanks to the completely redesigned one click user interface, the security solutions are extremely easy to use. Virus scans, backups and setting up the new AutostartManager are possible with just one mouse click. Device control in G Data TotalProtection 2014, which is also new, offers additional protection and ensures that other users cannot use unwanted USB sticks or DVDs on the home computer. G Data AntiVirus 2014, G Data InternetSecurity 2014 and G Data TotalProtection 2014 are available now.

G Data is currently observing a huge wave of spam luring recipients to malware sites

While the devastating bombing at the Boston Marathon has caused grief and horror around the world, cyber criminals have exploited the attack as an opportunity for a huge wave of spam. G Data Security Labs is currently observing a massive rise in email with links to videos of the explosion. But besides YouTube videos, there is also blackmail malware hidden on the website. This blocks the infected computer and claims it will be released again on payment of a "ransom". The computer is also exploited as a spam spray-gun to send more email. In a second variant, passwords are stolen and all network traffic is read to spy on the user. G Data advises recipients of such emails to delete the message without reading it and not to click on the link contained in it under any circumstances.

G Data urges everyone to remember their PCs, smartphones and tablets this year while tidying up. Over time, significant amounts of data and obsolete programs accumulate there, whereby old software poses a serious risk.

CeBIT innovation secures company networks

The dangers of operating system and software vulnerabilities are of-ten underestimated in companies, even though they offer an ideal attack vector for cyber criminals. Due to increasing heterogeneous network structures within companies, administrators lose the overview of the software that is installed and their update possibilities. Sometimes available patches are not installed out of fear of possible system incompatibilities. G Data now offers a solution. G Data PatchManagement is an ingenious tool for the management and installation of updates. Administrators will have an overview of implemented software and they can install tested up-dates in stages without the fear of system failures. Companies can now close application vulnerabilities before online criminals use them for their attacks. G Data PatchManagement will be available as an additional module for G Data AntiVirus, G Data ClientSecurity and G Data EndpointProtection in the second quarter of 2013.
