Apple ships removal tool for Mac-menacing malware

Fake anti-virus malware attack on Mac OS X is doing rounds over the internet for couple weeks now. We have seen Microsoft Windows being infected with malware, that requires us to install anti-malware, anti-virus software (ofcourse there are many free tools available). However, at times some of these tools happen to be fake and these tools will install virus on our machines.

Apple is coming with a better solution. Rather than creating an anti-malware application by a third-party company or by with-in Apple, instead, they are building an update feature to the Mac, that puts an end to the malware issue. The next version of Mac OS X will include the Security Update 2011-003. The update provides additional protection by checking for the MacDefender malware and its known variants. When found the system will terminate the malware, delete any persistent files, and correct if any modifications were made to the configuration files.

This scareware variant downloads directly to the applications folder, which during installation will not require admin credentials. Any application being installed outside of Applications folder will require admin credentials to install.

Google Introduces Google Wallet Phone Pay

NFC - Near Field communication, the term itself describes what this is all about. Communication that occurs when both the devices are less than 4 cm away. It's a short-range wireless technology that allows two devices to communicate when they are in very short range. Usually used in mobile devices to make payments, sharing data, unlocking doors, etc.

Project trials and Full-scale deployments is on the go across all the continents.

One such event occured today in New York City. Google introduced Google Wallet, a contactless near field communication (NFC)-based cell phone payment platform.
The company is teaming up with Citibank, Mastercard, Visa and many other retailers to roll it out.

Basically what Google Wallet does is, Next time you go to Walmart, Kroger, Hollister, Americal Eagle Outfitters or any of these stores, you will not require your wallet to pay, but instead you can use your cell phone to make the payment. The Cell phone also shows up if there were any coupons for the product available online, and scans the coupons automatically, paying only the rest of the amount. You don't have to swipe your card, enter 4-digit pin, or even sign the transaction. Everything is handled by the Google Wallet Phone Pay. Just wave on the card reader with less than 4 cm distance, and that's it - Transaction Complete.

You will have your Citibank, Visa or Mastercard Credit card / debit card, or gift card details fed to the cell phone prior making any transactions, and this feature to work.

Mac users are not used to these things. Criminals have been ruling Microsoft Windows users for a long time by infecting their Windows operating system with virus. Could be by downloading software in to their system knowingly or unknowingly. For example: On Windows system, while browsing through internet, a pop-up shows up telling the user that his/her system is affected with virus and prompting the user to download the software. No matter what the user clicks, either OK or CANCEL, on-click of either buttons, the software gets downloaded and installed on the user machines.

Now it's time for mac users. However, one way mac users are safe because, when a software needs to be installed, the OS prompts users for administrator password. If you haven't been installing something knowingly, you can cancel, and the installation stops and it no longer affects your system.

So guys, next time keep a track of what you install, so that you just don't enter your admin credentials to stop the bugging pop-up on your system.

If you have a Macintosh, you can also create your own ringtones without paying

anything to anyone—by using GarageBand, the music-editing program

that comes on every new Mac (version ’08 or later).

Start by building the ringtone itself. You can use GarageBand’s Loops (prerecorded

instrumental snippets designed to sound good together), for

example, or sound you’ve recorded with a microphone. (There’s nothing like

the prerecorded sound of your spouse’s voice barking out from the phone:

“HONEY! PICK UP! IT’S ME!” every time your beloved calls.)

If you’re not especially paranoid about record-company lawyers, you can also

import any song at all into GarageBand—an MP3, AIFF, MIDI, or non-copyprotected

AAC file, for example—and adapt a piece of it into a ringtone.

That’s one way for conscientious objectors to escape the $1-per-ringtone

surcharge.

In any case, once you have your audio laid out in GarageBand tracks, press the

letter C key. That turns on the Cycle strip—the yellow bar in the ruler shown

below. Drag the endpoints of this Cycle strip to determine the length of your

ringtone (up to 40 seconds long).

Tip

One feature that’s blatantly missing on the iPhone is a “vibrate, then ring” option.

That’s where, when a call comes in, the phone first vibrates silently to get your

attention, and then begins to ring out loud only if you still haven’t responded after,

say, 10 seconds.

GarageBand offers the solution. Create a ringtone that’s silent for the first 10

seconds (drag the Cycle strip to the left of the music), and only then plays a sound.

Then set your iPhone to “vibrate and ring.” When a call comes in, the phone plays

the ringtone immediately as it vibrates—but you won’t hear anything until after

the silent portion of the ringtone has been “played.”

Press the Space bar to start and stop playback as you fiddle with your

masterpiece.

When everything sounds good, choose Share ----> Send Ringtone to iTunes.
