First Scholarship Recipients Selected

Katherine Schwartz, MSIV

The Summa Foundation Osteopathic Medical Education Scholarship was established in 2010 with a goal of awarding academic scholarship to deserving residents of Summit, Portage or Medina counties who are attending the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. The generous scholarship endowment was created by the Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital Osteopathic Education Fund as a method of support for new physicians to return to their home county to pursue their primary care medical practice. The first recipients were recently selected.

Katherine Schwartz, a fourth year medical student, is a lifelong resident of Medina County. She plans to pursue a career in family medicine.

Jennifer Valentic is in her second year of medical school. She is also from Medina County and intends to prepare for a career in primary care medicine. We congratulate both awardees and wish them well as their further their education and training.

Western Reserve ENT Resident Wins First Place

Dr. Amy Stinson

The American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation honored Dr. Amy Stinson, PGY-5 ENT resident with first place for her resident paper. Dr. Stinson’s paper was titled “Prospective Study: The Effect of Allergy Immunotherapy on Sleep.” In addition to the recognition, Dr. Stinson was awarded $650. She is congratulated for her work and selection.

Resident Awards Presented by Medical Students at May Pit Stop

Mary Ellen Margocs DiDonato (FM) received the “Career Guidance Guru” Award for providing helpful career advice to medical students
Vince Snarr (IM) received the “Genius Mentor” Award for excellence in teaching and sharing medical knowledge
Lindsey Hines (FM) received the “Social Captain” Award for showing hospitality to medical students and including them in social activities
Sergio Ulloa (Ortho) received the “Top Pimp” Award for always demanding answers to tough medical questions

Dr. Melissa Juliano receives First Place for research

Dr. Melissa Juliano, PGY-3 Family Medicine Resident has been selected as the First Place winner in the Ohio State Society of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians/CORE FP-RPAC paper competition. She will receive a $1,000 cash prize for her paper entitled Screening Intimate Partner Violence in Primary Care: A Survey of Battered Women’s Shelters in Two Ohio Counties. We congratulate her on her recognition of this community based research.

Third Year Med Students Prepare for OSCE

In preparation for an upcoming Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE), third year medical students practiced interviewing and examining standardized patients, played by fourth year medical students. The OSCE is a is a performance-based exam in which trainees are observed and evaluated as they go through a series of stations with standardized patients portraying a medical problem. Cookies for Hospice

Medical students from the SWRH CORE site gathered for an annual community service project to decorate holiday cookies for families of hospice patients. The students baked and decorated more than 17 dozen cookies!

Oral Care Lecture and Lab

Dr. Caltabiano places first in ACOI Resident Research

We are pleased to announce that Lisa Caltabiano, D.O., OGME-3 Internal Medicine Resident has received FIRST PLACE for her research/poster presentation Epidemiology of the Pandemic Influenza A/H1N1 2009 Northeast Ohio at the October 2011 American College of Osteopathic Internists Annual Convention and Scientific Session held in San Antonio, Texas.

SWRH OMM … On The Road Again

Summa Western Reserve Hospital’s CORE Assistant Dean, Ron Russ DO, visited the Ohio University campus in Athens, OH on September 20th to provide a unique learning experience to students in the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Russ presented a hands-on demonstration of osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) to a group of more than sixty first and second year medical students. Dr. Clayton Seiple, Program Director of the Family Medicine residency, assisted with the presentation along with Family Medicine resident Dr. Kelli Buckner and CORE students Sarah Watson and Dan McCarthy.

This is the second year that Drs. Russ and Seiple have led this program for OUCOM students.
