November 6th-Chattahoochee Nature Center Den Meeting 3:30-5:00pm -We need to get a head count of all the scouts and parents coming to this meeting because we can only have 15 total in attendance. So if we have all the boys attend then we will only have room for 5 adults to come. We will meet for our next den meeting on Friday, September 30 at Leita Thompson Park on Hwy 92. We will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the large field in the valley. Class B red shirts are the uniform for this meeting and we will probably need a water bottle. Also please remember that Dan Betts had sent out some homework for you to be working on a couple weeks back so please let me know at the meeting if you have completed it. See previous homework below. We will cover the following achievements during the meeting so if you are not able to make the meeting please let me know and make sure that you complete the achievements with your scout and report back to me. Previous Home Work:

For the first part of September please work on the following two items:

1. Ways we worship. You can complete this requirement by earning the Religious Emblems award or writing down ways you can practice your religion in your home, church, synagogue, mosque, or other religious community. While I strongly encourage you to work towards the Religious Emblem, as a back, up I suggest writing down ways you can practice your religion (Achievement #2).

Note: The Religious Emblem Award is not a BSA Award but is rather awarded by a religious leader at the place of worship. It is one of only a few awards that a Cub Scout can wear as a Boy Scout and then also as an adult leader. The Pack is currently looking for a sponsor to help parents find resources for earning the Religious Emblem Award. If you are interested in volunteering for this position, please contact Lisa Baraji or myself. 2. In Achievement 3: What makes American Special, the scouts will need to write an essay on what makes America special to them. After that they need to complete two other items. Most of you have already done this at Summer Day Camp and Resident Camp, attending the Den Meeting at Etowah Indian Mounds, and doing flag ceremonies with the Pack/Den.

Below are the requirements for Achievements 1 through 3 (please refer to your Bear Handbook):

We will be holding an all Bear Den Meeting this Thursday, July 28, 2011 from 6:30 – 7:30 PM at the Garrison Mill School Covered Playground.

If you missed the Pack Pool Party we will be handing out awards and honors earned over the summer. The main focus of our meeting will be to work on the Emergency Preparedness Pin and cover Achievement #11 (in the Bear Handbook), “Be Ready.” If you want to get a jump on the requirements, please review and update as necessary the Emergency Evacuation Route the scouts did last year and get a practice run on this completed.

August is the month for recruitment and registering with the Pack. Here are some of the upcoming dates

Sat, Aug 6 9:00 am – 12:00 pm: Habitat Day at Garrison Mill Elementary. Come and help our Charter Organization get the front of the school ready for classes.
Fri, Aug 12 8:30 am – 10:30 am: Sneak-a-Peak at Garrison Mill – Stop by the Pack 471 table and bring a friend who may want to join scouting.
Tue, Aug 23 6:45 pm – 8:00 pm: School Night for Scouting/ Pack Meeting at Garrison Mill – Sign-up for another great year with Pack 471. There will be fun and games for the scouts while the parents complete the registration form.

Den 11 Update:

Pack 471 is gearing up for another great year of scouting. For Den 11 we are putting together plans that will help all three Bear Dens work together to reach our goal of earning the Bear Badge. We are expecting a number of new boys to join the pack at all levels, including bear so please welcome them to our program.

This year I have humbly accepted the role of Cubmaster for the Pack. It is a big responsibility but I want to assure Den 11 that I am as committed to the Den and Bears as I have been the last two years for Tiger and Wolf. I could use an assistant Den Leader to help organize resources for the Den Meetings.

As I mentioned before, the Bear program is different than the previous Tiger and Wolf Programs, in that the scouts will need to complete 12 of 24 achievements (if you have not already, please review your Bear Handbook). The achievements are divided up into 4 groups.

Each Scout must:

Do one of the 2 Achievements in Group 1 (God)
Do three of the 5 achievements in Group 2 (Country)
Do four of the 6 achievements in Group 3 (Family)
Do four of the 11 achievements in Group 4 (Self)

I will be sending out a calendar soon of the Den Meetings and asking parents to sponsor 2 meetings/activities between August and February. In addition, the Bear Rank will be planning and hosting the Pinewood Derby this year. This will go well as a number of you have participated in the last couple years and have become old hands at this.

We are also going to be continuing our Summer Program. We have had great participation in the Whittling Chip and almost everyone in the Den will have attended the Summer Day Camp and/or the Resident Camp. By participating in each of the Pack events in June, July, and August, the scouts can earn the National Summer Time Award Pin.

August - Pack Meeting and Round-up (this will be the week of August 22nd but the date has not yet been set).

Welcome to Bear!

Much of the advancement for the Bear rank is done by the scout with his family outside of the den, similarly to the Wolf rank. The parent signs off in the scout's handbook and the Den Leader records the advancements from the handbook to tracking chart or software program. The Bear program relies heavily on family involvement, but you will see this gradually change with the scout doing more with his den and more individual direction as he reaches Webelos and Boy Scouts.
To complete the Bear Trail scouts must complete twelve achievements to be a Bear Cub Scout. They have a wide choice because there are twenty-four to pick from. These twenty-four are grouped into four broad categories, God, Country, Family, and Self.
During the next year our Den Meetings will cover part of some achievements and the scout, with his family, will need to finish the rest of the tasks for that achievement. If the scout attends Cub Scout Day Camp and/or Resident Camp, they will complete some of the achievements over the summer.
Start looking at the Bear handbook now. It is very exciting and has a lot of very cool boy things to do. Scouts may start working on Achievements and Electives as of May 21, 2011. This is definitely a notch up in the scouting world form what we did as Tigers and Wolves.

Placement of Arrow Points

Congratulations to all Den 11 scouts and parents for achieving the Wolf Badge. I am very proud of each of the boys and thankful for the support from each of the families in the Den.

Each scout received their Wolf Badge and a number of arrow points. I wanted to share my experience with the sewing of the arrow points on the uniform which was not easy. I first tried to sew them on individually and they ended up crooked and uneven. I finally decided to put a drop of hot glue and place them on the uniform then sew. This worked much better. Please refer to the pictures for placement of the Wolf Badge and arrow points. The Gold Arrow Point is located 3/4 inches below the Wolf Badge.

Also, it is worth mentioning all the recognition that the Den received at the Blue and Gold Banquet. This would not be possible without the great group of parents that is supporting the scouts. 3rd Place in the Table Center Piece Contest, Jack Hunter received first place in the Pinewood Derby for the Wolf Rank, Alex Betts received first place for Best In Show for his Pinewood Derby, Jack Hunter and Daniel Lee tied for winning the Moon Walk Contest, and Den 11 was able to receive their Wolf Badges at the Blue and Gold Banquet right on target with our goal. I was also very impressed with the cakes from Den 11.

My apologies for not getting a Den schedule out sooner. I needed to get a few things to drop in place first. We are making our push for the Wolf Badge while preparing for the Blue and Gold Banquet. Here are the upcoming dates then for Den 11:

Den 11 Update

Yesterday we completed Achievement 5, “Tools for Fixing and Building.” We had a great time at Lowes building a game box and learning about different tools.

I will be calling

each family to talk about what Achievements need to be completed over the next month on the path to earning the Wolf Badge. All the remaining achievements are to be completed with the family and then we will talk about them at our Den Meetin

gs. That means that if you are caught up on everything as of today, you will need to complete Achievements 8, 10, 11, & 12 as a family and report your progress.

1/12/2011 Achievement Report Due for any Belt Loops or Activity Pins earned over the past month. Awards will be presented at the next Pack Meeting. Send an e-mail or call Dan Betts with your updates.

1/18/2011 We will have our next Den Meeting on Tuesday, January 18, 2011. I will let everyone know the details as we get closer to this date. Dan Betts will bring a scale for scouts to weigh their cars if they are ready.

1/21/2011 Pack Meeting on Friday, January 21, 2011. We will have our sign up for Space Camp so be sure to be there. The cost will be around $100 per person. If you sold $300 or more of popcorn this year, the plan is that the Pack will cover this fee for the boys. Be sure to bring your check book and get signed up at this time. Also, bring a sleeping bag, bean bag, or blanket to watch the movie, “Down and Derby.” The pack will be making popcorn. Note: I will not be at this Pack Meeting. I will be on the Scouters Winter Camp (SWC). This is an adult leader training event camping at Woodruff Scout Reservation. A scale will be available to weigh Pinewood Derby cars.

1/27-28/2011 Weigh-in and Quarantine. All Pinewood Derby racers must have their care weighed in and then quarantined prior to the race (same as last year). Watch for specific instructions.

1/29/2011 Pinewood Derby: Watch for schedule and activities to be posted on the Pack Website.

2/3/2011 February Den 11 Meeting: We will be wrapping up our records on Achievements and talking about electives. We will also be working on our Den 11 table centerpiece for the Blue & Gold Banquet. Dave Grachen, Dan Lee, and Frank Hunter will be pulling together the supplies and prepping the center piece for final completion. We may need to have a second session to complete the centerpiece. Thanks for everyone pitching in to help with the Refrigerator Box decorating. I also wanted to thank all the parents that are pitching in to help with upcoming Pack events. Den 11 is well represented and I am proud of everyone for stepping up. As we have been told, scouting is lead by volunteer Scouters (parents and Adults who have an interest in seeing scouts learn the scout values, have fun, and mature into outstanding young men).

Today we wrapped up Achievement # 6 and did the Character Connections for Achievement #7.

If you have missed some meetings all Den 11 should have Achievements 1, 2, 3, & 4 complete.

By the next Den Meeting scouts should complete the necessary work at home to have Achievements 6, 8, & 9 complete if they have not already done so.

In January we will complete Achievement 7 & 10.

In February we will complete the last two, Achievement 11 & 12

We also talked about the Pinewood Derby & the Blue & Gold Banquet today

Pinewood Derby:

1. The Pinewood Derby kits will be handed out at Tuesday's Pack Meeting.

2. The January Pack Meeting date has changed. We will have the Pack Meeting on Friday January 21, 2011 and after a brief meeting watch the Down & Derby Movie and eat popcorn.

3. Weigh in and quarantine will be Thursday and Friday January 27 & 28, 2011

4. The Pinewood Derby race will be Saturday, January 29, 2011

Blue & Gold Banquet:

1. The Blue & Gold Banquet will be held Sunday, February 13, 2011. The theme this year is Space.

2. There will be the Father / Son Cake contest

3. We will need to plan and do a skit

4. We talked today about the center piece. Dave & Matthew Grachen will work on a design for a rocket center piece with input from Dan Lee and others. Frank Hunter has volunteered his garage for the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). Everyone will have a chance to give input and decorate.

Another great time at today’s Den Meeting. What a relief that it wasn’t the transfer station like I originally thought. The scouts were very well behaved and asked great questions.

In order to complete Achievement #7 scouts should find 3 stories about how people are protecting our world. They can be articles books or TV shows. Then discuss them with their family. We will cover the last bits at the next meeting on December 11, 2010.

November 4th Den Meeting

Another great Den Meeting. Thanks Dan for hosting and putting all the prep work in for this meeting. I am very proud of the scouts and their progress towards their Wolf Badge and Elective Chevrons. Tonight we had a lot of fun and completed the following:

Achievement 4a - List of Emergency Numbers (be sure to finish this at home)

Achievement 4b - Tell what to do if someone comes to your home

Achievement 4c - Tell what to do if someone calls on the phone

Achievement 4d - Tell what to do when you leave your house

We also built our Rain Gutter Regatta Boats for the next Pack Meeting. This also fulfills the requirement for Elective 5g.

Dan will plan our next meeting which will be to Visit an important place.

Also tonight we had several parents who had multiple commitments. I am very pleased that arrangements were able to be made so that those scouts could attend the meeting. If you have a conflict, please call the Den Leader or another parent and see what accommodations can be made. Attendance at Den Meetings is very important for the scouts.

Great Den Meeting on Thursday!

We caught up on a lot of things and had a lot of fun. Just to recap:

1. Turned in Achievement 3a worksheet - How to keep your body healthy, completing Achievement #3

2. Completed the rest of Achievement #1 - Feats of Skill

3. Talked about the Georgia State Flag, Completing Achievement#2

4. Handed out the 1st yellow Wolf Bead to go on the scouts Totem

5. Did elective 14b (Meeting a strange dog) & Elective 14d (Tell what is meant by rabid)

6. Matthew shared his poster for his Pet Care Belt Loop

7. Jack & Alex shared their Cub Scout Values Project boards

8. Handed out the Chore Checklist worksheet for Achievement 4e

I will e-mail directly to everyone the Chore Checklist. I will also e-mail everyone a copy of the Advancement Report so you can compare what Achievements, Electives, and Belt Loops have been completed.

Next Den Meeting

October 28th Den Meeting:

Out next Den Meeting will be this Thursday, October 28, 2010 at Alex’s House from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. I will send out a separate e-mail with our address and directions. We will be outside for this meeting so dress appropriately and I will have a fire going to warm up by. We will be finishing up a couple achievements and the scouts will earn their first Wolf Bead after this meeting. Scouts will also receive their very own state flag and learn flag etiquette. If you missed the Feats of Skills Den Meeting we will catch you up and complete this Achievement. Please be sure to bring your Scout Values board project if you have completed them.

Please bring your completed Health Habits Chart, Achievement 3a to the Den Meeting on Thursday.

Chores Home Work:

Over the next couple months, our Den Meetings will require more and more work at home with the family and then sharing your experiences with the Den. On Thursday we will hand out a chart for the scouts to chart the chores they do at home. This will mesh well with our Pack goal for scouts to earn money doing chores at home to purchase a gift for the Garrison Mill Gift Tree. This year money earned at home doing chores can be donated to purchase a bicycle that will be put under the Garrison Mill giving tree.

November 4th Den Meeting:

On November 4, 2010 we will have our Den Meeting planned by Daniel Lee’s family. At this meeting each scout will construct their own Raingutter Regatta boat. At the November Pack Meeting, we will set up several 10’ lengths of rain gutter and fill them with water. Scouts will blow (lung power) their boats to the finish line. And remember, if your son sold more than $300 in popcorn, he can throw a pie in David Jane’s face at this Pack Meeting.

10/19/2010 Pack Meeting

Bring your popcorn sales card and money to turn in at the Pack Meeting.
Bring a recent scout project to display at the Pack Meeting. You can bring a project from an achievement, elective, belt loop activity or other scout activity (such as Day Camp). Please include an index card or small scrap of paper that includes:

Scouts Name
Rank
What Achievement, Elective, Belt Loop, or activity the project was made for.
Date project was completed (Month & Year).

We will receive instructions on next months Pack activity, the Rain Gutter Regatta, a boat race using rain gutters and propelled by scouts lungs.

10/23/2010 ScoutFest at the Cobb Gallaria from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. ScoutFest is a one-day event in which Scouting units from throughout the Council come together to stage exhibits and demonstrations that bring to life the fun and adventure of Scouting for all to experience. It is the final Centennial Celebration that no one will want to miss including Scouts, parents, leaders, and the community.
