This week's class will be looking at Adobe Indesign. It will focus on nook production layouts and the ergonomics of the printed page. If you are thinking about producing your own Artist book then this is a great class to turn up to.

This week's class will be looking at Adobe Illustrator. It will focus on using images for artwork, masking, live trace and live paint. This useful for turning images, such as hand drawn illustrations, into vectors which can then easily be manipulated using the computer.

Essential IT Maintenance in Library and Computer Centre 4.30pm 16th of December

Due to some essential IT maintenance at 4.30pm on Friday the 16th of December all of the computers in the Library and Computer Centre will be out of use. The Library will remain open as usual and books can be returned and issued at the self service machine.

Learning Resources User Satisfaction Survey prize winner!

Many congratulations to Daniel McGeough Year 4 Textiles who won the £50 Amazon gift voucher in the annual Learning Resources User Satisfaction Survey.

We are delighted that 90% of respondents agreed that the Library & Learning Resources provide a good service to them, the highest score we have achieved. Survey results will be discussed in detail at the Student-Library Forum to ensure that we continue to provide the best service for our students and staff.

Limited Service in Library on Wednesday 30th November

A number of Trades Unions have voted for strike action over pay and pensions and will be holding a National Day of Action on Wednesday November 30.

This means that some of our staff who are members of these Trades Unions will be on strike; that public transport may be disrupted with some staff and students unable to get to GSA; and that nursery, primary and secondary schools may be closed with the ensuing implications for those with children.

Library will be open between 09.00 and 17.00 although it will only be able to offer a limited service.

Photoshop: glamour images, depth of field and high dynamic range

From the days of George Hurrell in the 30s & 40s, glamour photography has

used some manual enhancements. Originally airbrushed by skilled artists like

Bob Nesbitt, these manipulations have now been taken to a new level using

digital techniques. In this class we will explore the powerful capabilities

of Photoshop to assist you with creating visuals, manipulating and enhancing

images and montaging files.

Vogue Archive Online - Trial Access

The Library currently has trial access to the newly launched Vogue Archive Online. This resource provides a searchable archive of American Vogue, from the very first issue in 1892 right up to the current issue, reproduced in high-resolution. The indexing enables you to search for images by garment type, designer or brand. The Vogue Archive preserves the work of the world's greatest fashion designers, stylists and photographers and is a unique record of American and international fashion, culture and society from the dawn of the modern era to the present day.

This twilight class shows you ways of enhancing your images; revealing hidden detail; manipulating and balancing colour, some tips and tricks to get the best from digital files. We will use a variety of filters, layers and adjustments as well as the photography-based tools to demonstrate how refined or deliberate your corrections can be.

We kick off this years Library IT Twilight classes tomorrow evening, Thursday 6th October, when Kerry Aylin will be presenting a session on:

Idea Mapping – visual methods of mapping divergent ideas and projects

Kerry will be looking at how to use the Inspiration software package to create mind maps or idea maps.
The session will start at 5.30pm and last for one hour in the iMac training room in the Computer Centre on the first Floor of the Library. As always there is no need to book, attendance is based on a first come, first served basis and we have 20 seats – do feel free to bring your own laptop and join in if you have Inspiration software installed on it.

Scandinavian artists' films

We have recently added a number of Scandinavian artists' films into stock in the library.

These include short films, video installations and exhibition previews by a number of leading and unheralded conceptual artists from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

All these titles, that include work by the likes of Eva Koch, Bodil Furu and Johanna Billing, can be found in the DVD collection between DVD 2157 & 2179.

New and Improved Subject Guides

GSA Library has just updated and expanded its range of tailored subject guides in preparation for the start of the 2011-2012 academic session.
Our subject guides have a great new streamlined look, and have been made available as PDFs for easy download. They provide a quick one-stop guide to the resources available for all GSA programmes and subject areas, as well as for affiliated topics such as Film and Cinema. Find out useful shelfmarks in the Library, print and electronic journals, online databases and imagebanks, library blogs and learning materials, all tailored to your specific subject or course of study.

Creative Research at GSA Library

GSA Library has just launched its brand-new mini-site, 'Creative Research'.
Discover how artists, writers and creative practitioners have used the collections of GSA Learning Resources to inspire, challenge or expand their practice. From interventions into our spaces, to installations amongst our shelves, our collections can be used to explore and challenge artistic, cultural and philosophical themes and preoccupations.
‘Creative Research’ brings together a number of case studies, images and artist testimonies to explore how practitioners have used, played with, and deconstructed the Library’s spaces and collections. The resource is freely available on the Library Website.

Direct Entry and International Student Library Inductions

Complete List of Print Serials in GSA Library

We've just added a Complete List of Print Serials in GSA Library to our website, which provides details of our complete holdings (including dates) of journals, serials, magazines, annual catalogues, year books, almanacs and other periodicals. The list follows a year's programme of work to tidy up our journal holdings and make it easier for our readers to understand what we hold. We've amalgamated catalogue records where journals were previously split over 2 or more records, added extra fields of information (such as ISSNs, publishers and publication frequency) and cross-referenced our catalogue records to alternative titles where journals have changed titles over time.
