Girl Scouts: Smart Cookies and Cover Girls

As the time of our organization's centennial celebration draws near Girl Scouts of Hawai’i is literally “on the move,” working hard to ensure our efforts to remain relevant to today’s girls are not only exciting, but that they create new opportunities for us to better serve the community on a local and global scale for centuries to come. Amidst great changes, we continue to pride ourselves on cooking up a recipe for success so unique it has yet to be matched by any other. In the May 2, 2011 issue of Midweek, writer Susan Sunderland highlights some of Girl Scouts’ recent innovations, proving we’re so much more than our tasty trademarked treats or outdoor adventures!

GSH Moving Update

Oahu staff will be unavailable Monday, April 25 and Tuesday, April 26, 2011 to allow for installation of the communication systems in our new Ala Moana Hotel home.

Offices are still scheduled to reopen Monday, May 2.

Girl Scouts of Hawai`i offices on Oahu and the shop will remain closed to the public from April 25 - 29, 2011. Please be advised that during this time Oahu staff will be intermittently unavailable via phone and email due to the installation of the communication systems at our Ala Moana Hotel location.

Join the Relief Effort for Girl Scouts of Japan

We are devastated by the catastrophe in Japan and, on a personal level, are deeply concerned about our sisters there, the Girl Scouts of Japan. USA Girl Scouts Overseas has served American military and civilian families in Japan for many years, and has extremely close ties with Girl Scouts of Japan. In fact, many of our overseas troops and Girl Scouts of Japan are sister troops.

Girl Scouts of the USA reports that the policy that prohibits Girl Scouts from raising money for other organizations has been temporarily suspended. To contribute to earthquake and tsunami relief efforts, online donations are being accepted to the newly established Girl Scouts of Japan Relief Efforts. At times like these, Girl Scouts throughout the world come together in sisterhood to help those in need. We have seen our Movement rally in support of the victims of Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters over the years, and will continue to do everything we can to help our sister Girls Scouts of Japan in the weeks and months ahead.

Memo: Girl Scouts of Japan relief efforts

Girls are also encouraged to send expressions of friendship to their sister Girl Scouts in Japan by making origami cranes (Sadako). For instructions, see YouTube videos. The Girl Scouts of Japan made and mailed thousands of these cranes to the United States as an expression of peace and friendship after the September 11th tragedy.

Girl Scout Organization Recognized for Innovation!

Fast Company revealed its 2011 list of the Most Influential Women in Technology and Girl Scouts was singled out as an example of an organization on the right track! The article discussed what is being done today to forge the next generation of women in technology, and highlighted the wonderful aspects of World Thinking Day while praising us (and a few others) for helping girls change the world with innovative and creative solutions.

Girl Scouts of the USA has been awarded the much esteemed Gracie Award! Sponsored by the Alliance for Women in Media, the Gracies strive to encourage the realistic portrayal of women in entertainment, commercials, and news, and GSUSA's selection recognizes the organization's efforts to remain a strong, loyal advocate! In October 2010, GSUSA hosted the Healthy Media for Youth Summit with partners: The Creative Coalition, the National Association of Broadcasters, and the National Cable & Telecommunications Association. At the summit, GSUSA's Watch What You Watch PSA was revealed to raise awareness about girls and healthy media images and because of its impact, GSUSA will be awarded a Gracie for that PSA in the Outstanding Public Service Announcement category.

It's an all day, annual event when troop cookie orders are dispersed at Aloha Stadium. This year taking place on Thursday, February 24, some 15,000 cases of these tasty treats were handed off and are now destined for loyal customers and store fronts beginning March 4. Because of the excitement surrounding this cornerstone of the much anticipated Girl Scout cookie season we had a chance to talk with some of the media's finest representatives, telling them just how much a cookie can do!

In observance of President's Day Girl Scouts of Hawai'i offices statewide will be closed Monday, February 21. Offices will reopen during normal business hours February 22.

Due to Cookie Pickup at Aloha Stadium offices on Oahu will be closed Thursday, February 24, reopening during normal business hours February 25.

Girl Scouts and Google have partnered together for the fourth annual "Doodle 4 Google" contest, providing girls with the exciting opportunity to design the Google homepage doodle of the day! This year's theme is something Girl Scouts encourages all its leaders of tomorrow to think about: "What I'd like to do someday."

The top 40 regional finalists will be determined by Google employees and a panel of guest judges, including Whoopi Goldberg, gold medal ice skater Evan Lysacek, and “Garfield” creator Jim Davis. Finalists will get a trip to New York City, a visit from Google in their hometown, and their artwork will be featured in a special exhibition in partnership with the Whitney Museum of American Art!

What about the first place design? Not only will it be on display for millions on the world wide web to admire, the artist will receive a $15,000 scholarship in addition to a $25,000 technology grant for their school!

First Shipment of Cookies Arrive at GSH Headquarters!

More than 3,000 cases of cookies - that's 40,000 boxes - were delivered to Girl Scouts of Hawai`i's headquarters today, marking the beginning of an exciting cookie season in 2011!

This first shipment of Girl Scout Cookies will be made available to Girl Scout Cookie Ticketholders for redemption starting Saturday, January 15! Cookie Ticket customers will be able to redeem their Cookie Tickets at various locations across O`ahu, including the Girl Scout Hale (420 Wyllie Street, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, closed holidays.) Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Monday, January 17, Girl Scouts of Hawai`i offices statewide will be closed as we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a man who embodied the ideals of courage, confidence, and character to which we as Girl Scouts are committed. His heroic embrace of brotherhood, sisterhood, and forgiveness in an angry, fearful, and divided time was an inspiration and a beacon of hope to millions, and helped save a troubled nation from calamity. He truly made the world a better place for all.

More than fifty years ago, Dr. King singled out the Girl Scout Movement as “a force for desegregation.” We are still a powerful force for equality and positive change as we develop the leadership skills of nearly two and a half million girls from every race and every walk of life. Our girls teach people to read, clothe and comfort the homeless, establish medical clinics, found libraries, and much more. Through their individual acts of compassionate public service, they continue Dr. King’s work of transforming our world.

Since it first became a national holiday twenty five years ago, the Girl Scouts have observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day of community service. Troops throughout the nation have organized a wide variety of community service projects, from serving food at homeless shelters to painting murals at community centers. Girl Scouts wishes to congratulate all involved in these projects, and urges everyone in the movement to seek out, this coming Monday, an opportunity to serve others.

Commemoration is a fine thing, but we best honor and celebrate Dr. King’s life by following his example. He is gone now, and it is up to us to make the world a better place.
