We saw consistently high retail email volume – equal to Thanksgiving week. Email frequency tapered off with only 11% of clients sending five or more messages compared to 32% in Thanksgiving week. With so much email earlier than ever before, customers responded. Chase Paymentech2 data indicated a spike in transactions Sunday night as many brands started their Cyber Monday sales early. The email channel worked extremely hard given the increased volume during the two big shopping weeks. Cyber week click and open rates were up by more than 10% from Thanksgiving week and revenue per net delivered stayed strong.

Earlier this month, eBay Inc. made some big news from Innovate when it announced plans to integrate Facebook’s Open Graph into its commerce platforms – including GSI Commerce.

The release stated:
"eBay Inc. also plans to integrate Open Graph functionality into its GSI business unit’s Social Media Services framework. This will enable large merchants worldwide to offer their customers similar ways to connect with their friends through shopping, using GSI’s existing Open Graph-enabled content management system. GSI’s commerce platform supports more than 180 retailers in the U.S. and globally, including many leading national brands."

Like my colleague Richard Brewer-Hay, chief blogger at for eBay Inc., I have watched eBay move its community-based marketplace into today’s social web over the last couple of years – and now, we’re doing the same at GSI. After Innovate last week, I was anxious to catch up with some of the core team behind GSI’s Social Media Services to learn more about what it all means.

Entering into a GSI summer internship within the corporate marketing team as a third year college student, I had 8 weeks to figure this one out. I didn’t go undercover, but my mission was clear—to be a sponge. Listen, watch, learn and ask questions. And, in my final week, I had the chance to reflect on all that I learned about ecommerce.

1.There’s a lot going on behind the scenes
During my first week at GSI, I was asked if I had ever purchased anything from Dick's Sporting Goods ecommerce site. Lo and behold my answer was yes. But how did this relate to GSI? The senior executive responded with an ear-to-ear smile. "You've already worked with us, and you didn't even know it."

Specifically around topics like anticipated growth, best practices, why it’s here to stay and why it’s a passing fad. Part of the reason for its extreme coverage is because its definition has grown to include so many types, iterations (mobile, tablet commerce, Facebook) and versions (transactional and experiential). What’s missing in all the coverage is the concept that success in social commerce will be defined by a brand’s ability to remember and execute against the commerce fundamentals.

Where does social commerce go from here? And what commerce fundamentals should you leverage?

Instead of trying to play lexicographer on this, I think the easiest way to talk about multichannel is to simply look at how consumers gain awareness, research and/or buy things today: across multiple online and offline channels.

Retailers see it. They see consumers researching online before they buy in-store (45% of visitors to Home Depot visit their website first) and the rapid growth of mobile commerce with 62% of consumers with web connected phones buying something with their mobile.

The eTail West conference is once again in Palm Springs this year, with the theme, “The Future is Now: Managing ‘What’s Next’ While Remaining Focused on Today’s Brand Experience.” It’s a timely theme -- with the pace of change in ecommerce, the challenge is definitely in executing today while planning for tomorrow. GSI comes to eTail for the obvious marketing benefits. We meet with current clients and prospects, but each of us also attends to learn the various approaches that retailers are taking to succeed in multichannel commerce.

You know the scene. It’s the same every year – only the teams change, sometimes. The final gun of the Super Bowl sounds, players on the winning team pour on to the field high-fiving and hurriedly pulling on “Super Bowl Champion” shirts and hats. It turns out the scene isn’t too different in living rooms around the country. Big difference is that the fans at home don’t reach to team assistants for gear, they reach for their mouse and go online.

Launched in October of last year, ShopRunner is a $79 annual subscription program that provides its members with free two-day shipping and free returns on an ever-growing assortment of products from a network of over 60 best-in-class brands and retailers.

The coverage around ShopRunner thus far has centered on the program’s parallels to Amazon Prime, and how GSI is using it to provide multi-channel retailers a platform to compete with the world’s largest online retailer. But what are the challenges for GSI as a company in operating a consumer-facing endeavor like Shoprunner?

To dive deeper on these and other topics, I caught up with Mike Golden, President of ShopRunner.

The 2010 holiday season was supposed to be the best one for online retailers in the past few years. Holiday growth estimates range between 13% (comScore for overall online industry) to 23% (Chase Paymentech for top 50 websites) – with a lot of changing consumer behavior behind it all. Last week, I spent a few minutes with Fiona Dias, executive vice president of strategy and marketing of GSI Commerce, to see what happened in the industry last quarter and what marketers can take from it as we roll further into 2011.

My whole life I saw the trees because of the forest. The big picture helps me understand the bits and pieces in it. Years later, I know my entrée into any work related conversation usually starts at 30,000 feet including my first introduction to GSI Commerce.

Not too long ago you could do an industry round up on ecommerce by looking through a straw. There were two major ecommerce players – Amazon and eBay – and brick and mortar retailers launching Web sites to compete with them and their own stores. Then came search marketing and online payments.

Looking back at what ecommerce became in 2010 requires a much bigger straw. Local shopping, social media, couponing, mobile commerce and private sales became more than words buzzing around ecommerce last year. They became a bigger part of the consumer experience and are quickly becoming core to the segment.
