Looks like they had fun with this one as I’m having fun myself using it. Reminds you of the times sitting in class and just drawing random objects, pictures or even dialogue to pass the time or zone out HedoneDesign looks to have taken the fun and slapped it right on your blackberry with “Skeper”. I’m guessing Skeper is a play on words of sketch or sketcher.

Everything on the homescreen has a hand drawn look to it. You have 10 custom icons on the bottom. The icons blend so good with the theme it would make you not want to change to the 3rd party apps as they can throw it off alitttle. The battery meter is cool as its animated as is a few other things on here. Its not a lot going on but it brings simple fun looking functions to your device.

App screen looks nice as the icons continue to look as if they were drawn on a notepad. Once again when you throw the 3rd party apps can throw it off a little. But I like the notepad look though, looks nice behind the BBM? smileys. The handwriting font is nice to see too in your 1st party apps like your SMS. You see it every time you press the menu button. Been cool to see it incorporated into some of the actual apps.

Skeper is fun theme and you should enjoy it as it brings a different new look to your blackberry. Everything on the homescreen is hilarious and should bring some laughs.

Skeper is available now for most blackberry devices for $6.99, and this can be picked up at www.hedonedesign.com

I was reading a very interesting article on BerryReview.com titled “Why US Carriers Sell Smartphones for $199.99?”. They in turn got this story from CNNMoney. The idea they have is that

“The obvious answer is that $199 is a magic price point for smartphone volume.” That could definitely be but I think it is just because carriers have managed to condition us that a new device will cost $199 with a new contract.

I disagree with this. I think the reason for this price point is the Apple effect. When the original iPhone came out it was selling for some $599 & this is with a contract. But at the time this wasn’t uncommon. Smartphones started at $299 and up.

But all this changed with the release of the iPhone 3G. Apple had already changed the game with the release of the iPhone and its OS. But with the release of the iPhone 3G at the $199 price point, people lost their minds. This changed the game for smartphone makers and carriers. Think about it, every phone after had to be “an iPhone killer”.

Think about it from the carrier view. Everyone and their momma wanted an iPhone, it was the Jesus phone. For your phone launch to succeed, how could you put it up against an iPhone 3G which cost $199 and yours went for anything more than that? Every smartphone launch after that had to drop its price to $199 to stay competitive, to have any kind of chance. Can you think of any phone that launched for more than $199 since the iPhone 3G that has sold well? (besides an higher storage capacity iPhone).

So I seriously doubt any other reason for the $199 price point, other than because Apple set the standard. Maybe one day this will change, but as long as there is an iPhone out there that costs $199, there will be no smartphones (that succeed) that launch above $199!

Hey just because I don’t have the Blackberry Torch or OS 6 for my Bold 9700 doesn’t mean I cant have the feel of it right? Using OS6Like by Hedone Design gives you the functionality and look of one. Its got the look down from the transitions to the menu options, to even a search tab on the homescreen.

So much can be done on the homescreen alone its great to see. You have 12 customizable icons divided into 2 sections which are Custom & Favorites. I think its cool because you can distinguish your apps more. At the top we have a array of features. It broken into two bars. The lower bar presents your usual Profiles tab, the middle houses a tab for messages(which also shows notifications when available), and to your right is a “Search” tab. Never really see these in themes but this a feature mostly used in OS6 and you may enjoy using it here too actually. Above that for your changing of Connections. The blue wallpaper is a nice touch but if you want you can always change it to your liking.

Icons used on here are identical to OS6 and they changed every first party app to show. The theme itself runs pretty smooth transitioning from window to window and your battery/memory don’t seem to take a beating in the process. I do applaud HDD for keeping up on this theme as I guess its been very popular and updating and touching it up fairly quick to make it what it is today. I don’t think I have any gripes about this one and enjoy using it. Also you have the choice of using it Zen style or the popular Today Preview.

OS6Like is available now for most blackberry devices for $6.99 and can be purchased from www.hedonedesign.com

When reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) hires a film crew to document himself, his motive is to show the tricks of the trade of being a preacher and also to expose himself as the fraudulent preacher that he is. He tells them that he will also show that the people he has performed exorcisms on are nothing more than religious fanatics who believe that they are possessed by demons. He picks a letter that he has received from someone wanting him to perform an exorcism, and he and the film crew go out to a farm in Louisiana. Once they get there Cotton meets with Louis Sweetzer (Louis Herthum), who tells him that his daughter Nell (Ashley Bell) is possessed and has been killing his cattle in the middle of the night.

Cotton, is a charismatic preacher who although he does believe in religion, he also believes that the people who are supposedly possessed are nothing more than someone with mental problems. He feels that with his trickery and effects that he uses, he can convince anyone that he has extracted the demons that have possessed them. After doing his exorcism on Nell, he tells her father that his daughter will be fine and that the demon has been removed. Cotton soon discovers that there truly is something wrong with Nell, but he’s still not convinced that she is possessed. He performs another exorcism on her and his religious beliefs are put to the test when Nell actually does show signs of having some kind of evil inside of her. Now Cotton and his film crew must find a way to help Nell before it’s too late, as she is becoming more and more dangerous to herself and everyone else involved.

I have to admit that I was possessed by this movie trailer. I thought that the movie was going to be really scary and shocking, because the trailer had looked so good. After coming out of the theater, I had been thoroughly exorcised. This movie was straight fraudulent. It bordered on more comedy than any real scare factors. I thought that this was going to be a good horror movie and all it turned out to be was a bad way to spend my money. There was no wall climbing scene, like shown on the poster. The one scene were the girl’s body was contorting was pretty cool, but I’ve seen yoga people do the same exact move, and better I might add. Then when you think that you’re finally going to see some real signs of demonic possession, the girl easily snaps out of it. The final slap in the face came towards the end of the movie when things just got really stupid and confusing. It turns out that the girl was possessed, and it was somehow connected to the town’s own preacher. He then performed a sort of exorcism/extraction and it just really left you wondering as to what the hell, excuse the pun, just happened.

If I took anything away from this movie, it would be the confessions that the preacher, Cotton revealed about the practice of performing religion in churches. We all know that all preachers aren’t in it for the good of their followers and this movie made fun of that fact. Other than that it was a waste of my time and money and truly questioned my judgment of movie trailers once again. I will give this movie ½ a demon out of 4. It just didn’t live up to the hype. The movie runs 1 hour and 30mins. It was rated PG-13 for disturbing violent content and terror, some sexual references and thematic material. It was written by Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland. It was directed by Daniel Stamm. The movie was produced by Strike Entertainment. It was distributed by Lionsgate.

Make sure your pastor isn’t a con man when donating to the collection plate. Ezo

This morning I received an email from the Socialscope team that a new version of Socialscope had been released. Sure enough, there it was when I checked the app on my BlackBerry. According to the email, Socialscope has received quite a bit of changes as well as a few new features and tweaks.

What’s New in .129?

Full Facebook Experience
We’ve upped our Facebook experience 1000x with Facebook Friends list, Facebook pages, Full Facebook Profiles, Private Messages and Notifications. SocialScope is the best way to use Facebook on your BlackBerry.

Inbox Integration
Powerful inbox integration allows you to select exactly which messages appear in your BlackBerry inbox.

Mute
Tired of hearing from a user, application(farmville!) or topic? Now you can block those updates.

Reduced Battery Usage
We’ve tuned, tweaked and optimized SocialScope to dramatically reduced battery usage. The most powerful social networking app now also the most power efficient.

Interface Tweaks
SocialScope is faster and easier to use. We’ve made interface tweaks through out the app based on your feedback.

Invites (coming later this week!)
You’ve been asking for a way to share SocialScope with your friends and we’ll be delivering that later this week.

    Lots of Bug Fixes
We went bug hunting and fixed many issues including url shirking, removing Twitter accounts and location lookup.

As you can see, quite a bit of changes. I am pretty excited however about the much improved Facebook experience on Socialscope as well as the Inbox Integration. As you can see in the image above, it even lets you see full profile information now as well as those for Facebook Pages. This means that I can finally delete the Facebook app from my BlackBerry now and replace it with Socialscope thus freeing up some much needed space.

One function that is very nice now is the new Mute function. This allows you in essence to remove updates in your timeline from certain users or Facebook updates that you don’t really care to see but at the same time, don’t want to unfollow. This can drastically clean up you timeline with more relevant information. that you want to read about. All you do is scroll to the update of the person you don’t want appearing on your time line, press the BlackBerry key and click mute.

On the interface side of things, most of the app is the same as the previous version. There are a few really great changes though that Socialscope implemented. You can now adjust the size of the font based on actual text size now instead of just the generic normal and large in the last version. Also, Socialscope is now fully integrated into the BlackBerry inbox which means all @replies and direct messages can now be seen in your BlackBerry inbox. Socialscope also seems to be handling Facebook image galleries much better now.

If you’re not on the BlackBerry platform and Socialscope sounds really interesting to you, don’t fret. I also received another email from Socialscope stating in the coming months an Android and iPhone version of Socialscope will be available for beta testing. If you are interested in signing up, visit http://getsocialscope.com/.

First with the Astro Gaming A30s to the Able Planet ones, and now the V-Moda Crossfade LPs. We definitely like V-Moda’s products as we have previously covered the Vibe and Vibe 2 series. While we could never use the media control input with a Blackberry (always seem to drive it mad lol), the quality of sound for this company has always been good.

This continues on with the Crossfade LPs. This are some very futuristic looking headphones, very robotic looking. When I wore them around the house, my daughter (3yrs old) said I looked like a robot lol. The design on these are very good looking and you will definitely stand out in a crowd. Check out some of the images below and in our Gallery. And stay tuned for the full review coming soon.

Pneuma brings us a nice dark smoke theme with highlights of blue with the indicator. It provides 12 custom icons on the right side that look to represent a almost a 3D effect about them. The left side you have a open gray homescreen that can you can use for wallpapers(if you can find one that fits just right), and depending which version your using either the Zen or Today Preview will show you info in that area also.

The application screen looks simple with your usual icons laid out and your notifications and such at the time. I will say that this theme does run pretty fast and moves from screen to screen without any hesitation. Doesn’t seem to take a toll on the battery or memory too much either. Only gripe I have about this theme is trying to get the perfect background which I haven’t. Other then that I think its a great addition to your theme library. As with a lot of the HDD themes it also uses DFK and has received a BQC award.

Pneuma is available now for most blackberry devices for $6.99 in Zen or Today Preview w/ HDD icons or Blackberry icons. And you can get this theme at www.hedonedesign.com

I checked a couple of nights ago and it wasn’t there. According to the App Store page, it was only just released this morning. With the release of the Netflix app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, this further convinces me that I need to get an iPhone 4 as my next upgrade which is in a month. I love Netflix and its probably one of the best services I currently pay a monthly fee for. I use Netflix on all my game consoles so why wouldn’t I also want it on my phone?

I did download the Netflix app to my test iPhone 2G and it downloaded without a hitch, however when trying to log into the service itself, it would continuously timeout when trying to connect to the login server. Not sure what that is about but I was only able to get to the 2 screenshots you see below. I will try it again tonight to see if it is finally working correctly.

How are you guys doing today? Today I’d like to introduce the Raven 1 by Silverstone! Just what exactly makes this case so unique? Well for starters, it takes the conventional motherboard and rotates it 90 degrees. Now backtracking to middle school science class, we’ve all learned that hot air naturally rises. So now instead of a front intake to back exhaust fan setup, with the simple idea of hot air rising, Silverstone went ahead and changed it to bottom intake and top exhaust. Another reason this design is eye catching is because it separates GPU(video card) and CPU heat from each other. In a normal case (pun unintended) the GPU’s hot air will rise and then meet with more hot air in the CPU area until it is exhausted out. This design flips it so the GPU and CPU’s hot air, which is already going up, will go up!

Here is a better explanation from Silverstone themselves!

Click here to view the embedded video.

Features:
Revolutionary 90 degrees motherboard mounting
Natural airflow layout with positive pressure design
Dual 180mm silent fans included
RADsupport included for optional liquid cooling
Flexible drive storage options with hot-swappable SATA adapter

Now this case will run you roughly $200. (Really depends on where you get it) But hey, your computer might just thank you.

Ever since the MiFi came out and the thought of having a personal WiFi bubble where ever I went, I’ve been fiend for this device. The MiFi is in a nice looking credit card shaped package and yet it provide an internet connection for up to 5 devices.

I believe it was Verizon Wireless who came out with this first and then Sprint had one. The only thing about them that I didn’t like, was their plans. Verizon Wireless has a pay as you go option, but it is way more than I wanted to pay and at most you just had 5GBs of data. Not that I would need that much, but say I wanted to use it for CES week, I’m sure we might just get close. Sprint had the MiFi and even a faster service with the Overdrive 4G device they have. However on Spring I couldn’t find any prepaid option.

This is where Virgin Mobile comes in. I heard that Virgin Mobile had a prepaid option, but never got around to checking it out. I’m glad I wait until now. Seems Virgin just announced that they will replace their existing prepaid plans of $20, $40 and $60 with a $40 unlimited 30 days plan. Combine that with the fact that their MiFi device (though not 4G) is only $149.99 and I have an offer I just can’t refuse. While I would like 4G, it isn’t something I absolutely need right now. So you can trust I will be getting this, come Friday! Check the press release below

Virgin Mobile USA Moves to $40 Unlimited Offer for Prepaid Mobile Broadband2Go

WARREN, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Virgin Mobile USA recognized early on the value in expanding the mobile broadband market to include nationwide prepaid service with the introduction of the Broadband2Go portfolio last year, and then launch of the MiFi™ 2200 device in June. Now, Virgin Mobile is bolstering the Broadband2Go portfolio with a new $40 unlimited mobile broadband plan1. Available tomorrow online and rolling out at retail in the coming weeks, the new offer replaces the previous $20, $40 and $60 plans, allowing consumers to access unlimited internet use at home or on-the-go for $40 per month. The $10 option for 100 MB, good for 10 days from purchase, remains for less frequent internet users.

“Many unlimited broadband offerings require a contract or are on networks with limited range, so they don’t meet the need for flexibility or true mobility”

A recent study from the U.S. Department of Labor shows that the self-employed and independent workers represent approximately 30% of the nation’s workforce. The study determined that this segment of the self-employed population, consisting mainly of small business owners and freelancers, represents a large market of consumers who need to stay connected, mainly with email and internet browsing, without the constraints of a contract.2

“Many unlimited broadband offerings require a contract or are on networks with limited range, so they don’t meet the need for flexibility or true mobility,” said Neil Lindsay, chief marketing officer, Virgin Mobile USA. “The introduction of Virgin Mobile’s prepaid unlimited broadband for $40 a month will provide the access you need on a nationwide network without a contract.”

New Broadband2Go Plans

Signing up for the new unlimited plan also means customers no longer need to monitor data usage – and try to figure out how much they need –

Price Expires MBs/GBs* Web Browsing Video Emails
$40 1 month Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
$10 10 Days 100 MB 5 HRS 25 MIN 10,000

*Data usage per activity is based on average use. Actual usage varies depending on the types of websites, video, email and other Internet applications accessed.

Broadband2Go activation remains simple and without fees. Customers who are currently signed up for the $20, $40 and $60 plans will be able to use up the data or time (whichever comes first) on their current plans. The next time they need Broadband2Go, they will have the choice of these two plans.

Top-Up can still be handled online, with a Virgin Mobile Top-Up card, debit or credit card.

Operating on the Sprint Nationwide Network and developed in conjunction with Novatel Wireless [NASDAQ: NVTL], Virgin Mobile offers two different mobile broadband devices on both plans as part of the Broadband2Go portfolio:

    * the Ovation™ MC760 USB device connects to a single personal computer or laptop and is available at retail for $79.99 and,
* the MiFi® 2200, the nation’s first prepaid Mobile Intelligent Hotspot, priced at $149.99 allows up to five users at a time to connect using a variety of Wi-Fi enabled devices

Devices are available at Best Buy, RadioShack , Sprint Stores, Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile stores, Walmart and online at BestBuy.com, Target.com, Walmart.com and VirginMobileUSA.com.

Its Spring Break time and thousands of teenagers have gathered at Lake Victoria for their annual spring break activities of swimming, drinking, and partying. Some distance away a tremor has cracked open the lakes floor, and has unleashed a prehistoric strain of piranha fish. These fish are hungry and they’re ready to devour anything they run across in their path. When Sheriff Julie Forester (Elisabeth Shue) learns about the razor-sharp teeth man-eaters, it’s a race against time to try and get all of the teenagers out of the water before the piranhas attack.

Meanwhile, her son, Jake (Steven R. McQueen) is also on the lake showing a porn video producer, Derrick Jones (Jerry O’Connell) and his group, locations to shoot his video scenes. With the piranhas approaching fast, will anyone be able to get out of the lake before it’s too late? How can the Sheriff regain order in time to get thousands of teenagers from out of the water and also rescue her own family?

Now I know a lot of people saw this trailer and said, “Why are they remaking that franchise?” I thought the same thing, but I have to say that it was definitely worth the effort. This was actually a really good horror movie. It had all the aspects of a horror movie revolving around the beach, partying, topless woman, and blood thirsty fish, just waiting for someone to enter the water. Yes there was an over abundance of nudity in this movie, but isn’t there always in horror movies. What I was more concerned about was how gory this movie would be and I have to say that it ranked up very high on the gore meter. These fish were tearing people up, to the bone. What also made this so much fun was that it was in 3D. Now I know I have complained about the overkill of movies presented in 3D, but this movie actually used the technology as part of the appeal. There were several times in the movie when the 3D was used to have things come right at you, as opposed to using the technology to just have the audience seem like their closer to the scenes. What better way to watch flesh eating fish attack, than to have them coming straight at you.

There is also a scene that involved a body part of Jerry O’Connell’s character coming at you that was pretty disgusting, but very funny at the same time. Ving Rhames plays a deputy in this movie. He doesn’t have that big a part, but he gets to go down in a blaze of glory. There was also a cameo by Richard Dreyfuss, which I guess was just a salute to the original Jaws movie, being that back in the days Piranha was the only other man-eating fish horror movie competition to the Jaws franchise. Christopher Lloyd also had a small part as the over excitable scientist who first realizes that they are from an extinct group of piranhas from the prehistoric age. All in all I have to say that this was a well rounded horror movie that didn’t disappoint. It also seems like they are leading towards a sequel to this film, which I anticipate will be just as bloody as its predecessor. I gave this movie 2 ¾ bites out of 4. Any horror enthusiast will have a fun time with this one. The movie ran 1 hour and 29mins. It was rated R for sequences of strong bloody horror violence and gore, graphic nudity, sexual content, language and some drug use. It was written by Josh Stolberg, Pete Goldfinger, Alexandre Aja, Gregory Levasseur, and John Sayles. It was directed by Alexandre Aja. The film was produced by Intellectual Properties Worldwide (IPW), Atmosphere Entertainment MM LLC. It was distributed by Dimension Films.

The next time you’re at the beach, if you feel a nibble on your leg, swim fast, very fast. Ezo
Next Week’s review: TBD

I mean it had a physical keyboard, it slid out, it was just quite frankly amazing. Good news for you G1 users who have been tardy to switch to a new phone because the TMobile is about to release the G2! Yes you read right, the G2 or otherwise known as the HTC vision. So what’s new?

Hardware additions:
1) Subtle front camera on the edge of the speaker. (like the X1′s cam, for waving hand gesture control software, and video chats)
2) 3.5 headphone jack e.g. http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/2…headsetzw0.jpg
3) TV out
4) Dedicated Lock/Unlock side switch (like the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic “Tube”)
5) Face sensor (turns off screen to save power during calls, like the Nokia “Tube”)

Does NOT have a tiling screen.

Hardware Improvements:
1) Screen resolution 800×480
2) A compete design overhaul
3) A bigger, flush screen that fills the sliding part front
4) Ultra low-power Tegra-like processor (GPU+CPU) capable of seemlessly handling OpenGL ES 2.0 gfx effects, transitions, and lengthy HD playback
5) More inward travel with keyboard key strokes
6) More responsive/sensitive compass
7) 5MP camera with flash
OLED screen (OLED displays appear brighter and sharper than LCDs, even when viewed at an angle. They are viewable in sunlight. And as a side benefit of ditching the LCD backlight, OLEDs are battery thrifty. OLED screens refresh faster, so they’re better at displaying video.)
9) A one-touch Omni-directional Nub instead of the Trackball

More information can be found here. As for the release date, it has been estimated to be around September 29th so get ready folks this one is going to be popular!

We’ve seen these book style cases before for the iPads but this is the first time I’ve seen one for the MacBook and MacBook Pro lines. Twelve South makes this stylish leather bound case for the MacBook and MacBook Pro called the BookBook. What I really love about this case is that it isn’t just a regular leather bound case. Instead, the BookBook imitates the look of a classically bound leather hardback book and even has a “weathered” look to it that adds a touch of class to it. Because of this, no two BookBook cases are ever the same according to Twelve South. Your MacBook and MacBook Pro is safely concealed inside with a velvety soft interior and secured with very strong elastic straps. On top of that, the BookBook also zips close for added security and protection. When closed, its pretty difficult to distinguish it from that of a regular book which is perfect for those who don’t want to draw attention to their precious MacBook enclosed within.

You can purchase the BookBook for $79.99 (13″ & 15″ models) or for $99.99 (17″ models). For a limited time, Twelve South is even offering free shipping in the United States.

Product Description

BookBook is a one-of-a-kind, hardback leather case designed exclusively for MacBook Pro. Available in Classic Black or Vibrant Red, BookBook brings three levels of security to your prized Mac. First, the hardback cover and spine provide solid protection from the rigors of the road. Second, the vintage book design disguises MacBook for superior security. And third, the stylish case protects you from being like everyone else because BookBook is totally original, just like you.

Hardback cover softens the blows.

Protecting your MacBook is a top priority and it’s job one for BookBook. Slip your Mac inside the velvety soft, padded interior. Zip it closed and your baby is nestled between two tough, rigid leather hardback covers for a solid level of impact absorbing protection. The rigid spine serves as crush protection for an additional line of defense. BookBook creates a hardback book structure that safeguards your MacBook like few other cases can. Far better than any floppy neoprene bag ever will. End of story.

The real story. No two are alike.

Each BookBook is brought to life with hand craftsmanship and distressing, ensuring no two are exactly alike. From dual zippers with leather pulls, that at first glance look like bookmarks, to the sturdy reinforced hardback covers, BookBook is a vintage work of art built to protect modern day Macs. Along with classic looks, BookBook was designed to use as a traditional sleeve or to work while connected via elastic corner clips. Those dual zippers give you the option to charge your MacBook while it safely stays inside BookBook. This case is designed with good looks and smart functionality, cover to cover.

BookBook is the perfect disguise.

One of the neatest features of BookBook is the stealthy security it delivers. No one will see your MacBook when it’s tucked inside BookBook, even when it’s right under their nose. Sitting on a coffee table, dorm room or desk, BookBook looks like a vintage piece of literature, not an expensive laptop. It’s a great disguise and a simple way to reduce the risk of your MacBook getting stolen.

Since there isn’t a app for the Blackberry, I took his suggestion to check it out and downloaded the Android app. The “check in concept” is very popular now due to companies like Foursquare and Gowalla, but instead of focusing on your location, Miso goes a little bit different direction.

With Miso you do “check in”, but instead of telling your friends your location, you let them know what you are watching. Do you consider yourself a movie buff, or maybe your a closet couch potato. Well now you can share what you are watching with everyone. Miso seems to have Foursquare down to a tee. You can check in, you get points, and earn badges. Just last night I earned the Movie Rookie badge when I check in watching Inside Man which was on AMC last night. I also earned myself 4 points for that check it.

Currently Miso has apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch, iPad, and Android devices. Like Foursquare you can share your check ins with Facebook and Twitter. While I don’t share my Foursquare check ins on Twitter, for Miso I don’t think I’ll mind, and would be cool to share what I’m watching. Also like Foursquare if a item isn’t in their database, you can add it. The app looked very good on my Samsung Captivate, working is another story. I don’t know if it was my signal (I was using WiFi at the time), but the app took way to long to load its pages if at all. I rebooted my phone a couple times to see if that was the issue, but it was a no go. I installed it on the iPhone 4 as well, and it worked like a charm. *Recently spoke with @0×88 on twitter, who I believe to be a dev there. He came to my aid as I complained lol and looks like they may be working on this*

From the app you can see Activity, TV & Movies, Badges, Profile, Friends, and Settings. This feels so much like Foursquare it is funny, but I do like checking in the stuff I watch. Want to check it out, head to gomiso.com and sign up.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Canon digital cameras, especially their SD, S and G-series line of consumer cameras. I’ve owned many Canons and have even strayed off the path and owned a couple of Sony cams and a Panasonic LUMIX.

Lately I’ve been wanting to go back to Canon and the S95 might be just the camera to do it. It looks very similar to its predecessor, the S90 and features a lot of the same guts but unlike the S90, the S95 is thinner and now features a new high-sensitivity image sensor that allows for some major low light image capturing and 720P HD video recording. The S95 also includes a new HDR mode that will process HDR images internally which is a new feature not seen in other Canon cameras.

The main features of this camera that really peak my interests are its low-light image taking abilities, being able to record in HD, and the manual control ring up front that gives it a more old school camera like feel.

The Canon S95 is set to release some time in late-August with a retail price of $399.99.

Press Release:

London, UK, 19th August 2010 – Canon today unveils the latest model in its successful PowerShot S-series with the launch of the new PowerShot S95 – an advanced, compact digital camera for photographers looking for outstanding low light performance and manual control in a pocket-sized body. Succeeding the highly-acclaimed PowerShot S90, the new model offers improved handling, greater levels of manual control, HD movie capabilities, the HS System and Hybrid IS – providing a powerful feature set capable of superb image quality in all shooting conditions.

Building on the S-series’ core principle of offering advanced manual control and low light performance in a compact body, the new PowerShot S95 takes the range to new heights, with features designed for users who demand maximum control and premium image quality in all conditions. The popular lens Control Ring, introduced with the PowerShot S90, has been improved with greater levels of flexibility, while a bright, f/2.0 lens and Canon’s HS System provide an even more powerful basis for low light and creative photography. The PowerShot S95 is also the first-ever Canon compact to feature Hybrid IS technology, providing improved image stabilization for macro photography.

Improving on both the size and handling of its predecessor, the PowerShot S95 features an even slimmer body at just 29.5 mm thick*1, an improved multi-control dial and the same external coating used on the EOS 7D to improve slip-resistance and grip. Also designed to fit seamlessly into a photographer’s existing workflow, the camera offers RAW format shooting and support for Canon’s Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software.

Shoot in darker situations with f/2.0 aperture and the HS System
The PowerShot S95 includes Canon’s HS System – a combination of a high-sensitivity 10.0 Megapixel CCD sensor and powerful DIGIC 4 processing, which provides exceptional low light performance even better than that of its predecessor. The HS System enables the camera to support a maximum ISO of 3200 at full resolution and works to reduce the occurrence of noise at all ISO speeds for high quality images. Users can also set their own parameters in Auto ISO mode, with the ability to limit the maximum ISO speed they want to employ during shooting.

Using Low Light mode, the camera can also achieve an extended ISO range from ISO 320 to ISO 12800, capturing images at 2.5MP resolution. Manual control of ISO settings and white balance in Low Light mode also provide greater control over shots taken in darker conditions, allowing users to accurately capture the ambience of a dimly-lit environment exactly as they see it. Low Light mode also enables higher speed shooting, capturing up to 3.9 shots per second so a moment is never missed.

As well as providing the ability to shoot without the flash and still achieve correctly-exposed shots, the PowerShot S95’s high-sensitivity sensor offers a greater dynamic range compared to conventional sensor types. Tonal range representation is improved as a result, allowing natural looking pictures to be captured in all conditions. A bright, f/2.0 genuine Canon lens perfectly complements the HS System, allowing more light into the camera and providing greater ability to use faster shutter speeds and freeze the motion of moving subjects.

Genuine Canon lens with Hybrid IS
The PowerShot S95’s 28mm wide-angle lens features 3.8x optical zoom, allowing users to get closer to distant subjects during shooting. The camera benefits from Canon’s extensive heritage in lens design, having been developed using the same processes and high-quality standards employed to manufacture Canon’s EF lenses, ensuring sharp, high resolution images with every shot.

Canon’s acclaimed optical Image Stabilizer (IS) counteracts camera shake – reducing blur and enabling users to capture shots in darker conditions and shoot at a shutter speed approximately 4-stops slower than would otherwise be necessary to achieve a blur-free shot. Hybrid IS also prevents image blur during close-up shooting, counteracting angular and shift shake that becomes more pronounced during macro photography.

Unparalleled control
The PowerShot S95’s unique and enhanced lens Control Ring enables the adjustment of various shooting settings such as ISO (in 1/3 stop increments), shutter speed, aperture, focus and exposure compensation – providing a satisfying and tactile experience. Offering even higher levels of customisation, the PowerShot S95 features a custom setting that allows the user to pre-set the function of both the lens Control Ring and the rear Multi-Control Dial in various shooting modes. A dedicated shortcut button can also be configured to provide instant access to pre-selected functions, offering the photographer easy access to settings during shooting.

To track subjects that are in motion, or to help achieve a creative composition, a new Tracking AF mode offers the ability to select objects from the centre of the frame and track them if they move, or if the frame is recomposed.

The handling of the Multi-Control Dial has also been redesigned following feedback from owners of the preceding model. The dial now features a more pronounced ‘click’ mechanism, preventing any unintentional changes to settings. Furthermore, the positioning of the ‘Ring Func.’ and ‘On/Off’ buttons has been revised, providing greater all-round operation in everyday use.

A 7.5 cm (3.0”) 461k-dot PureColor II G LCD screen features a tempered glass outer layer, offering enhanced strength, high contrast and a wide viewing angle that offers greater visibility even when shooting in bright conditions. A new RGB histogram available in playback also allows photographers to instantly check the exposure of a shot in detail.

HD movies with stereo sound
The PowerShot S95 features 720p HD 24fps movie recording with stereo sound. The inclusion of Miniature Effect in movies also adds a completely new dimension to video footage – shooting at a slower frame rate for dramatic and compelling time-lapse-style videos which appear of model scale. An integrated HDMI port with CEC compatibility makes it simple for video and stills to be viewed and controlled directly using a compatible HDTV and remote control.

Capture scenes as you see them
A High Dynamic Range shooting mode allows the capture of high contrast scenes closer to how they appear to the human eye. Exceeding the limitations of conventional cameras, the PowerShot S95 takes three different exposures of the same scene*2 before analysing and combining shots to create a single image in-camera. The result is an image that captures highlight and shadow detail closer to how the photographer sees it.

Instant, creative results
The PowerShot S95 includes a range of shooting modes to match the desired level of control or the photographer’s skill. In addition to the flexibility of Full Manual control and semi-automatic Aperture priority (Av), Shutter priority (Tv) and Programme AE modes, the PowerShot S95 also features Smart Auto for those who simply want to capture great shots instantly.

Scene Detection Technology within Smart Auto helps to provide the best results in all conditions, intelligently detecting the scene and selecting the optimum settings from 28 variables. Hints & Tips messages within the UI also make everyday operation as simple as possible, intelligently guiding users through the camera’s menu and offering a short explanation of each feature before it is selected.

Smart Flash Exposure controls flash levels according to shooting conditions, providing the right amount of flash to ensure perfectly exposed shots in all situations, from darker rooms to bright sunlight. The PowerShot S95 also offers Multi-Aspect shooting, with 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, 16:9 and 4:5 formats supported. Allowing photographers to shoot according to their subject or the intended use of the image, Multi-Aspect shooting provides the ability to choose which composition and result they want to capture as the image is taken, without the need for post-processing.

Easy, wireless content transfers are supported by Eye-Fi connected functions, allowing remote uploads to image sharing websites such as CANON iMAGE GATEWAY. The camera features a dedicated Eye-Fi section within the User Interface, and disables the auto power-down function when the Eye-Fi card transmits data – allowing the easy transfer of content without interruption*3.

Providing excellent all-round image quality and excelling in low light, the PowerShot S95 offers an extensive feature set designed to deliver outstanding performance. Built for those who want the perfect combination of portability, power and control, it’s the ultimate pocket-camera for the even the most advanced photographer.

Share stories with CANON iMAGE GATEWAY
Owners of the PowerShot S95 can join the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, an online facility for sharing photos and video. Photographers can take advantage of up to 2GB of personal storage capacity, creating enough room for hundreds of high-quality images.
