This is our sixth journey into this marvelous chapter and with every passing week as I survey the text that is here and all of the trails that it leads to other places, I am reminded of how fathomless this chapter really is. One could spend a lifetime here and going from here to all of the things that are implied and elucidated by this great chapter. Isaiah 53 poses a challenge to any preacher and that is to edit himself so that it does not become overly cumbersome and you miss the main point. I’m fighting against that a little bit. I’m further challenged because I normally prepare to have a beginning and an end and a middle, a whole sermon--I did last week--and to cover verses 4 through 6. I didn’t make it. I got through verses 4 and 5, two thirds of the way, but we didn’t have enough time for verse 6. So I have sort of a third of a message left. Well that presents to me is a great opportunity then to fill in with things that are really needful and related and I think helpful. It allows me to take a tangent of necessity rather than whim. And I’m going to do that with you a little bit this morning...

The name Isaiah means salvation of the Lord. Isaiah’s prophecy of 66 chapters, interestingly enough, is divided the same way the Bible is divided. The Bible has 39 books in the Old Testament, 27 books in the New and Isaiah has 39 books in the first half and 27 in the second half...

Now we want you to look at Ephesians chapter 6, and I know, I only get a certain amount of time on Sunday and I ate up half of what I get for tonight, because we got a little bit long this morning, so I'm not going to keep you a long time tonight. But I do want to bring to a final conclusion our brief series on Ephesians chapter 5 on the Spirit-filled life and the outcomes of that Spirit-filled life that have to do with marriage and the family. All of this really started back in verse 18, "Be being kept filled with the Holy Spirit." And we talked about the fact that we ought to be under the control of the Holy Spirit, not under the control of alcohol cause that leads to dissipation. We talked a little bit about the Christian and drinking alcohol. And then we launched off into what it means to be filled with, controlled by the Holy Spirit and how it produces all kinds of wonderful, spiritual benefits. We speak to one another in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, sing and make melody with our hearts to the Lord. We're always giving thanks for all things and we're subject to one another in the fear of Christ. So it produces praise and worship. It produces gratitude and thanksgiving. And it produces a willing submission that makes the body of Christ work together...

We return tonight to the fourteenth chapter of Mark, but I don’t want you to turn to that right now. Instead, I want you to turn to the sixteenth chapter of Deuteronomy…the sixteenth chapter of Deuteronomy. The book of Deuteronomy was basically a reflection of a brief period of time, about a month, in which Israel was on the brink of entering into the promised land after being delivered from Egypt. It’s called the Second Law, that’s what Deuteronomy means, because on the brink of entering into the promised land, God gave instruction to Moses to give to the people to prepare them as to how they would live when they entered into the land of Canaan, took over the land and became the nation that we know as the nation of Israel. There is all kinds of instruction in the book of Deuteronomy about their conduct, a reiteration of the law that God gave on Mount Sinai, a reiteration of many of the requirements for spiritual life and social life, how they were to live among the nations, how they were to conduct the feasts, the festivals, the Passover, all of that. And then there is tucked in to chapter 16 a very important portion in verses 18 to 20 where God lays out to the people of Israel the responsibility they have to function as a society in a just way...

Well, let’s turn back to the fourteenth chapter of the gospel of Mark, the fourteenth chapter of the gospel of Mark. With the beginning of this chapter, we enter into the events that lead up and include the crucifixion and the resurrection. This, as I said this morning, is the section in Mark’s gospel that we would call the Holy of Holies. This is where we go behind the veil, as it were, into the place where the blood is shed and sprinkled. This time symbolically, but genuinely to satisfy God and to provide redemption for all who would ever believe. This part of the life of our Lord, these final hours of His life, really are the Holy of Holies of Scripture. All of the Bible has led up to this point and all redemptive history, beginning in eternity past with God’s plan to slay His Son as a Lamb comes to its highpoint, its fruition here. For this morning, I am very happy to say to you that we’re going to begin our series on finding Christ in the Old Testament. That’s going to happen right now. However, you’re going to have to be patient with me because I’m hitting the reset button on my entire life. So I have for months been reading and absorbing and all of this, even when I went back in my days of seminary, I took a minor in college, I took a minor in Greek, that’s the language of the-- original language of the New Testament. I made a much greater emphasis in seminary on Greek and I’ve loved working in the New Testament. Now it’s a shift for me into the Old. I’m not unfamiliar with it, but I have absorbed so much in the last number of months. Somebody reminded me this morning that it was nine weeks ago that I said I was going to do that and it’s taken me nine weeks to get to this point and that’s because I can do anything I want, basically. I just show up and nobody tells me what to do. So there were other things on my heart like the ministry that we talked about with regard to Romans 8 and the Holy Spirit. But now, we are at a point to begin to find the Lord Jesus in the Old Testament.
