Google wave is the new social network released by (guess who?) Google. It's still quite premature and there are very few invitations sent, so the amount of users of this network is very limited.

Google wave has a big potential for many purposes, but we are here to talk about go.

In this picture you'll see it is actually possible to load an SGF viewer. Only viewer, there is no way you can actually play with it. But it's the first solution for Go players in Wave...

Updated: LOL, I managed to get a board working, it's now playable. It's playable but has a couple of bugs, which I don't know how to solve...

Tengen 2009: Yamashita Wins Game One

Yamashita Keigo, challenger for this year Tengen title, won game one against title-holder Cho U.

Here is the final position: Cho U (white) resigned after black's 281 move.

Cho U has captured the Tengen title from Kono Rin last year, after Yamashita Keigo has unsuccessfully challenged Kono Rin for two years in a row. Tournament table here.

Today this thread has been started at GoDiscussions by a user called nchh. I'm unaware of predecesors, but it might be very interesting.
The first shining move they talk about are played in this awesome game:

Computer Wins 9×9 Game Against Top Pro

The computer-Go system Mogo won for the first time against a top professional player (Zhou Junxun 9p, winner of international LG Cup in 2007) in an even game on a small, 9×9 board.

Cho U Wins First Game in Oza Title Match

Cho U, title holder of the Oza title, defeated challenger Yamada Kimio in the first game of this best-of-five title match.
This title must be quite important for Cho U: while he is still dominating the Japanese Go by the number of title he is holding, his very recent loss of Meijin title to Iyama Yuta is a sign that Cho U may not be in top shape anymore.

South Korea Wins International Amateur Championship

Song Hongsuk of South Korea won Korea's Prime Minister Cup, which is an international world amateur championship, with a perfect score 7:0.

Besides South Korea, the countries placed in the first eight were China, Hong Kong (both with 6:1 scores), Japan, US, Singapore, Taiwan and Canada (5:2 scores).

Huge Go Board in Ancient Fenghuang City

Fenghuang is an exceptionally well-preserved ancient Chinese town, according to wikipedia, with unique ethnic languages, customs, arts and architectural remains of Ming and Qing styles.

Fenghuang also has the largest Go board in the world and it hosts a match between two invited top professional players as part of a Go festival every two years. The two players are playing the game in a tower next to the board, while people costumed in black or white are moving on the huge board to mark the current position in the game.

Besides the huge Go board, there are also statues of famous professional players - can you guess who is who?

This year's match was between Lee Sedol of Korea and Gu Li of China. The game commentary, with analysis in great detail by Lee Hajin 3p, is broadcast in English on this youtube channel. First two parts are available so far.

Typhoon No Match for Cho Chikun

Some interesting news from the current Nihon Ki-in monthly English report: the October 7th typhoon in Tokyo affected the games scheduled for that day, and 4 out of the 41 scheduled games have been forfeited due to players being late more than one hour.

I liked Cho Chikun's dedication as he made it to the game just in time, with only 3 minutes left on his clock, by walking barefoot between 6th and 7th floors of the Nihon Ki-in buillding. Here's the full excerpt from the report:

Games start at 10 a.m. Mimura Tomoyasu was 14 minutes late for his Honinbo League game, but he still managed to win it. In more serious trouble was Cho Chikun, who lives in Chiba Prefecture, next to Tokyo. When his usual train stopped, he switched to a number of different lines and somehow made it to Ichigaya just before 11. His troubles weren't over, however, as he thought his game was being played on the 6th floor, the main playing venue for professionals. Actually it was scheduled for the special playing room on the 7th floor. Cho had taken his shoes off for the Japanese-style playing room on the 6th floor; when he realized his mistake, he rushed up barefooted to the Western-style 7th floor. He made it with just three minutes left on his clock. Nothing daunted, he played the game in byo-yomi and won it. （His opponent was Kono Takayuki 7-dan, and the game was in Preliminary A of the Tengen tournament.）

Hane Naoki Defeated Cho U in Agon Cup Final

Hane Naoki won this year's Agon Cup after defeating Cho U in the final.

Cho U has very recently lost his Meijin title, so he seems to not be in top shape anymore.

This is Iyama Yuta's first major title in Japanese Go, but I am sure we'll see more of him.
Cho U is still the dominant player in Japan based on the number of titles he is holding right now (four out of seven).

34th Meijin Title, Game 4, Day 1

The fourth game of the Japanese Meijin title started yesterday. The score is 1:1 so far.

Iyama Yuta, challenger, leads by 2:1 so far. He sealed move 83 at the end of day one, and can be seen in the photo below handing the envelope with the sealed move to referee Kataoka Satoshi 9p.

Here is the position just before the sealed move. The lower half of the board is pretty much settled after several exchanges took place. The game will be decided by the fight in the upper half of the board.

Jeongganjang Cup: Wang Chenxing vs. Kim Yunyoung

In the debut of this year's Jeongganjang Cup, Wang Chenxing 2p of China (left side in the photo) eliminated Kim Yunyoung 1p of S. Korea.

Wang Chenxing won the game by 10.5 points. But for some reason she didn't look very happy at the end of the game, according to this photo:

Wang Chenxing will meet Mukai Chiaki 3p of Japan tomorrow.

Time to Sign Up for Group Classes

Only a few weeks till a new session of Guo Juan's Internet Go School Group Classes. These are very high quality classes, and I can very much recommend them. If you have the time and opportunity, click on the link and seriously consider joining them.

Class Levels

Group A: 1d - 5d
Group B: 1k - 10k
Group C: 20k - 11k
Group D: 21k - 30k

2009 term 3: October 3/4 to November 21/22 -> registration started
Group A and B meet on Saturdays, and Group C and D meet on Sundays. 1,5h each lesson, 8 lessons each term.

Class Content
1. Topics include opening, direction of play, middle game, joseki, and endgame, plus two question and answer classes. The number of classes on each topic will vary by group.
2. Internal competition - students play one game per week with another member of their class. These games will be reviewed (most important points) by the teacher. If you have questions on your games, you can ask during the question and answer classes.
3. Winners and second places of each group competition may play a simul teaching game (2 hour maximum) with teacher Wang Jiankun.
4. Homework will be assigned.
5. Three audio lectures, selected by teachers, watched outside of class.

Bedtime Ladder Problem

I haven't been playing much, but I have been doing pretty regular go problems. Tonight I finally managed to actually get a KGS game in. I played a guest and my 'capturing stones' problems sure did pay off.

I am white, he is black. It is not a particularly hard ladder to read, but it still made me feel good to see that I could capture those two triangle stones easily into a ladder. He didn't agree, so played out the ladder and escaped when he discovered that it failed for him. Oops ^^

He posted a link to the new American Go Association Go Database, where one can look up so many more statistics than we ever were able to do on the old site. I am impressed!

Boston Results

It was a good tournament. The disadvantage of a smaller tournament (26 people) though is that one ends up playing a lot of handicap games. In this case, I gave handicap twice out of four games.

I gave 3H and lost.
I gave 9H and lost.
I clearly have room for improvement in my handicap game skills.

Thankfully, the other two games were even and I won one and lost one. Perfect ^^

End result 1-3. Good enough for a rusty player and I am learning so much already from the game reviews. More details later.

Boston Go Tournament

I kind of forgot that there was a go tournament in Boston this week, but luckily my friends helped me remember and pushed me to actually attend. Tomorrow the four of us will drive down to Boston and meet another member of the Upper Valley Go Club there.

Today I considered panicking that I wasn't ready and that I couldn't play, but instead I did many go problems and replayed a shusaku game twice. My five years old assisted me by excavating some dinosaur bones right next to me and by making fairy dust out of leaves, which somehow ended up all over my goban.

Guide dog in training Giant helped by making sure the cats wouldn't interrupt my studies.

It will be interesting to see how my games are tomorrow, I have been having a bit too much life and not enough go, but who cares. I will do the best I can.

Once a month, our go club visits the cafe at our local Borders book store and plays a few games. We also are available to teach anyone who is interested and have the times publicized in our local newspaper 'activities calendar' so that people know about it.

Even although one would think that tons of people would show up for free go lessons, we tend to usually have only one or two on a good day. We still continue playing at Borders because we feel it is good public outreach to play in such a visible place and tell people about the game.

Last Saturday we played there and had a great time. Five of our members showed up and one new person joined us. He had played go in the past and was happy to get to play again, even if he was a bit rusty.

One little boy asked about the game, but he did not want to learn how to play. At least now he knows about the existence of go and maybe some day he will be interested to learn.

I wish I had more time to do more public outreach like this, maybe when things settle down after the move.
