After some initial confusion I just upgraded my two iPhone plans through the ATT website and after checking out I noticed that I was charged an $18 upgrade fee for both phones (something that I didn't see on the Apple.com checkout screen when I almost ordered through them):

Email Order Confirmation For 16GB iPhone 4s:

Email Order Confirmation For 32GB iPhone 4s:

This isn't sales tax either as you can see by the images that tax is TBD and the upgrade fee is listed under Services & Fees.

Update 1: After calling ATT I found that although Apple.com doesn't initially charge you the $18 upgrade fee it will still come through on your next bill. In my opinion it's just another lame way to get $18 out of you though, which I think is pretty lame.

I finally got through to try and place an order for my iPhone 4s and I was greeted with this lovely (err... terrible) message:

"Your new device requires a different Data Add-on Plan than you currently have. We selected a compatible Data Add-on Plan for you. If you want a different plan, you can change the Data Add-on Plan by selecting Change here or from within myAT&T after you receive and activate your new device."

See the below applicable images and notice that there is no longer an option for me to continue to use my unlimited dataplan despite having the unlimited dataplan with AT&T since 2008:

Note: The discounted pricing is related to an EDU discount from my wife.

Update 1: The upgrade option is still unlimited as long as you continue through checkout but their order page is just unnecessarily confusing. Just keep clicking continue. I'm calling ATT to confirm that both of our upgraded phones get the discount.

You might be wondering what GadgetChris is in case you happened to stumble across this website - or perhaps you met me at this year's CES.

GadgetChris Explained:

This is a unique gadget website because the ONLY thing I do is video reviews of gadgets. My opinion is that there are already far too many gadget sites out on the web reporting gadget news but when the product actually launches there isn't enough video out there showing it off. So I'm here to change that by doing video reviews of as many gadgets as possible.

Like Gadgets?

If you like the concept of the website I suggest you subscribe to the RSS reader or via email updates to catch the first few shows that should go live in late January. Also, if there is a gadget you'd really like to see reviewed on this website simply add your comments on this post and I'll try and get one.

Do you work for a company that makes gadgets?

Great, I'm glad you're here too. If you have a gadget you launched and want some free publicity then please contact me.

I can't guarantee the review would be favorable of course, but if you believe your product is great there's a good chance I'll think so too.
