Palm Pre- Kevin and I were both very impressed how smooth Palm has made working with the Pre. It feels nice in the hand and while it’s too early to tell if the Pre can save Palm it’s definitely a gadget that has impressed me here at the show.

Novatel MiFi- this credit card-sized 3G router made an impression on us when it was first introduced and seeing it in person at the show has not changed that. There is something totally cool and useful about a tiny gadget that once you turn it on you have an instantly connected hotspot no matter where you are. In a coverage area anyway.

Sony Vaio P- it is no surprise to find this on my short list. I haven’t had any hands-on time yet but Sony has done a good job with the design of the P. I like the fact that the keyboard is touch-typable and the build quality looks pretty decent. We’ll have to see if the screen resolution is to high to comfortably work with. That may drop it off my list.

HP dv2 notebook- seeing how thin and light this 12-inch notebook really is impressed the heck out of me even though it’s not a netbook. It’s not much bigger than a netbook and it’s light enough to carry around with ease. The $699 starting price is very nice considering it has a powerful AMD processor and discrete graphics, unlike netbooks.

Pogoplug- this little box is so useful that it’s amazing no one thought of this before. You plug any USB hard drive into the Pogoplug and it is instantly accessible from the web. It has full security and multiple drives daisy-chained are also accessible. Very cool.

Most of the guys I know are into the craziness of PMP (portable media players)! Every single day they wait for something new in the world of PMPs, hanging out in the dedicated forums, etc. I bet a new concept of a PMP with no touchscreen would rush their blood!

I wonder, are people ready to control their gadgets without even touching them!? I doubt that! I still think that people like touching their gizmos. It gives you a specific feeling of control! You like the way it feels when touching buttons or the analog controls; you like to feel in charge of the process; etc. So, I guess less touchscreen control doesn’t mean more pleasure. I’d rather say less touchscreen control is more innovative approach – that’s all.

This No Touchscreen PMP is presented by the designers such as Mathieu Pesme and Jeff Castel. The two use conceptually new technologies (though they don’t get into details which are these).

The presented PMP comes equipped with a subsurface OLED widescreen and a simple dropped bevel around the bezel. The last one is designed to wind headphones in. You will also find tactile control wheel and integrated stereo speakers.

I have to recognize that the two things I appreciate in this model is the natural touching (analog controls) concept and the evolution of the mobile devices.

P.S. Too bad guys! I have to disappoint you saying that this is nothing but a concept. Thus, you should forget about picking one up in the ‘next-to-door’ store as it is only a concept for the future, which is not guaranteed to be created in the nearest future.

Today is officially the start of the CES proper and in true journalistic fashion Kevin and I have split up and are at the two different venues. Kevin is in the main Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) and I am ensconced in the Sands Expo Center. We will be meeting up at an off-site event later today.

In years past opening day of the CES has been a bit frienzied at both of the venues. Crowds of people everywhere you go and long lines to enter just about anthing. This year the show is very different and I think it’s a sign of the times.

The crowd at the Sands venue is nothing like in years past. There are folks already walking around the show floor but no big crush of people anywhere. What is most striking about this is how quiet the show floor is compared to years past. Usually it’s a strain to hear anything but it’s a bit quiet this morning. Maybe everyone is at the LVCC, we’ll get Kevin to chime in since he’s there.

I spent the morning wandering through the exhibition in the Sands. I have covered over half the show floor in a record amount of time because nothing caught my eye. Nothing. I have been deluged with booths showing USB flash drives, robotic animals dancing in time to the music, and displays full of laptop bags. That’s pretty much it and why I have no photos of cool gear to share. I haven’t seen any. You know it’s a slow opening day when the most interesting thing I’ve seen is a urinal.

ThinkFree Office Suite on Qualcomm Snapdragon Netbook
This morning I met with Edward Coloma from ThinkFree, developers of the ThinkFree Office suite. Back in October, the company introduced a demo of the productivity suite specifically for netbooks and today the company showed me the software running on Qualcomm-based hardware.
ThinkFree Office on Qualcomm Netbook

This morning I met with Edward Coloma from ThinkFree, developers of the ThinkFree Office suite. Back in October, the company introduced a demo of the productivity suite specifically for netbooks and today the company showed me the software running on Qualcomm-based hardware. They’re looking to have their product available for Android during the first half of 2009, but of course it all depends on hardware vendors since there aren’t any Android netbooks on the market… yet.

The test hardware I saw ThinkFree software running on was the same Qualcomm concept notebook we saw last month. The specs were meager by today’s netbook standards: the CPU was clocked under 600 MHz and had limited memory: 256MB. Yet the productivity demonstration ran reasonably well and is already optimized for touch controls. The concept hardware had a touchscreen and it was easy to tap and navigate through the simple menus. Overall, the software was pretty impressive considering it was ported over to support an ARM environment; it surely doesn’t hurt that it’s heavily based in Java.

ThinkFree is working with various OEMs to get the suite bundled on netbooks, but is considering a netbook version for sale. Too early for pricing, but their full version or Windows, Mac or Linux notebooks runs around $50 right now. My gut says the right price point for a netbook optimized version is around $30 to $35. The key selling point is the software’s ability to work both on- and off-line. We simply don’t have connectivity available all the time on our netbooks. Why sacrifice productivity when disconnected if you don’t have to?

I’ll be looking deeper at ThinkFree’s solution as they provided me with an Asus Eee PC 1000H review unit for 30 days, complete with their netbook software. Meanwhile, check out the gallery.

These news updates are also augmented by travel, finance, weather and sports information, but make sure your handset has Bluetooth connectivity beforehand (absent-minded moments do happen you know). What makes the SH241 more interesting is the Instant Alibi feature that lets users call themselves out from a meeting - neat! You can pick up the SouthWing SH241 Bluetooth headset for $39.99 at all AT&T stores in the US.

Paul Thurrott points out this hack trio so you can one or both of the following to your Vista machine. The Windows 7 Calculator has…

Two hacks have already surfaced for Windows Vista that add new features from Windows 7, and I expect we’ll see more over the next year. Paul Thurrott points out this hack trio so you can one or both of the following to your Vista machine.

The Windows 7 Calculator has a simple Mode switch to get you moving between the Standard, Programmer, Scientific and Statistics function, but it gets better. There’s also some built-in functions to compute everyday problems like gas mileage, mortgage or lease payments, and hourly wages. You can add this to Windows Vista with a small 358 KB download.

Aero Snap is nifty feature as well and I’m liking it on the MSI Wind which is still running the Windows 7 Milestone 3 test version. With it, you can drag a window to the side of your display and it will auto-resize to half of the screen. Pull it away from the screen and it returns to its prior size & shape. Snap it to the top of your monitor and it maximizes. Nifty and handy although some folks will of course say “meh!”. If you’re not in that camp, you can grab the 823 KB executable here.

Aero Shake is another window control feature: grab any window and move it left & right for a sec to minimize all other windows. Shake it again and the windows are all restored. I find this very useful on the smaller screen of my netbook and if you think you might, you can grab the 200 KB AutoHotkey script through Lifehacker.

Leathery Dell XPS 13 shots and Adamo rumors
Engadget’s Joshua Topolsky reveals the Dell Studio XPS 13 with glorious high-res art. He also has murmurs about the firm’s secret project, Adamo. Apparently the device — which the company plans to market as the “world’s thinnest laptop” — was slated to be released this month, but has been pushed back till at least February. The Adamo will sport a black and silver color scheme similar to the system you see here, but is “different,” and we’re told that it’s most definitely Dell’s play to nab some of that MacBook Air marketshare. The MacBook Air has marketshare? Dell Studio XPS 13 leather-wrapped laptop revealed, Adamo info leaked!…

Source: feeds.feedburner.com

Mooon+ Phone - Touchscreen and bluetooth headset in one!

At first I thought we have to deal with another touchscreen, high end mobile phone, but then I figured out that there is something special about this piece. The concept of this mobile phone – called the Mooon+ Phone – is made to surprise with a built-in Bluetooth Headset. Actually the idea is not a new one on the market, but I have to admit it is executed in a pretty original way.

I was talking about some predecessors of the idea. Well, one of them is WND Atom Van Gogh mobile phone. The one which has as a motto: ‘The first handset truly devoted to Wireless Earpiece users’. This exemplar has a built-in detachable Bluetooth Earpiece situated in the back part of the mobile phone.

The Mooon+ Phone we are discussing today is much more interesting to me. Besides the fact that I appreciate the wireless bluetooth headset, I must say that the sleek and clean design is incomparable to its predecessors. The Mooon+ Phone has got a really big and gorgeous touchscreen, metal accents (which make it something else than ‘a plastic toy’), a comfortable back clip for the belt (as I assume) and a digital camera. The Mooon+ Phone incorporates all a high end phone might need: camera which can be used for both still photography and video capture; music player which lets users play back music files in MP3 and other formats; etc.

Sunman Kwon – the designer of this masterpiece – has hit the point when decided to make the mouth piece detachable and turn it into a bluetooth headset. I also like the fact that the wireless Bluetooth headset is charging itself while it is not in use. Of course, it might not be the best idea, because it charges at mobile phone’s cost, which means it takes energy from your phone, but at some instance it might not be as important as it seams. It’s just a matter of choice!

They who have got the chance to hold the Mooon+ Phone in their hands presume that it is a combination between some sort of PSP Phone and iPhone (meaning the design rather then functionality). Others even give some formulas, such as: PSP (TM)+ iPhone(TM)+ Jawbone (TM)! What do you think about this?

So let’s resume, what makes this mobile phone brilliant:

The headset can be fixed to the phone, which prevents the accidental loss or the possibility to leave it at home or in your car.

You can always choose whether you want to be using the phone or the headset.

The built-in headset charger via the phone means one less damn cord/adapter to drag around.

The compatibility problem between the headset and the phone is solved

Well, gentlemen Hats Off for this piece!

Now, guys think and remember all the times when you either HAD your bluetooth headset with you (when you were in the city) and you didn’t need it, or NEEDED it and didn’t have it with you, or maybe it was dead. I give my vote for this concept and I think it will make big steps into the mobile phone mainstream. It really seams to me that it is a long-awaited solution to today’s mobile users.
