The Nintendo DS Lite is made up of several components, among which includes several ribbon cables that connect the screens to a circuit board designed to display graphics properly on the screens. These Nintendo DS Lite cables can easily become dislodged as you continue to raise and lower the top lid of the DS Lite that encases the two screens. When the ribbon cable becomes removed from its place, then the top screen will no longer work properly.

While you can send your device to a Nintendo technician, you can easily perform the repairs yourself, though you will have to void your warranty to pop open the case. You will only need tools you can find around the home.

Prepare your work space by setting a soft cloth on a clean table free from dust and debris. Put down your Nintendo DS Lite onto the cloth so that the logo faces you, opening the lid so you can see the two LCD screens facing up at you. From there, remove the four pads that encircle the upper LCD screen. You can use your fingernails or a plastic knife if you lack the fingernail length necessary to loosen the pads.

Next, remove all of the screws that were hiding under the four pads you removed using a screwdriver. You may require a jeweler’s screwdriver or the small screwdriver that comes with toy skateboards.

Pry off the front over plate to reveal the LCD screen sitting on its own. This gives you the room necessary to take out the screw that is on the green circuit board located to the left of the top LCD screen. You will need the small screwdriver to get this screw out due to its small size.

With the screw gone and set aside in a cup for safekeeping, you can remove the small green circuit board and detach it from the top LCD screen. Turn it around and put it on the soft cloth. Correctly positioned, the Nintendo logo should face up at you but appear to be upside down.

Look at the device and find the ribbon cable; it is named this as it is a cable that does look like a ribbon, and it should be on the left side of the small green circuit board that rests outside of the socket at the moment.

Take the edge of the small screwdriver and put it into the left side tab of the ribbon cable you found. This will allow you to gently lift it up so that the tab can release the ribbon partially. Complete the job by putting the flat edge of the screwdriver into the right tab and gently lifting it here as well. The ribbon cable can now be pulled out of the socket so that it detaches itself from the small green circuit board that only rests inside partially.

Take a cotton swab and dab some alcohol onto it, wiping down the socket for the ribbon cable on the small green circuit board. This allows you to clean it and remove the dust from within. Similarly, wipe down the end of the ribbon cable before tossing out the swab in the trash.

Line the ribbon cable notch with the slow on the small green circuit board, affixing the two together firmly but gently. Turn over the board and put it back into the Nintendo DS Lite console so that it is back where it originally was positioned. Firmly secure it by putting the screw back into its position as well.

Put the device back together and screw in the front cover place. Place some stick glue on the four pads and put them back in place to cover the screws.

If you’re anything like us here at GadgetHeat you have probably had a whole host of mobile phones over your life. Great right? er, not all the time….. Back when Nokia was the top -dog in the mobile phone space you could upgrade from Nokia to Nokia to Nokia and have a crop of Nokia chargers in your top draw. From time to time this would be useful as spares are always handy but in the main, they would remain in your top draw for an eternity until you switched brand…..

All of a sudden, you had a new phone from a non-Nokia manufacturer (let’s say Motrola Razr, remember them?). What do do with all those Nokia chargers but to throw them away? Those were the days when protecting the environment was not high on the agenda (before good old Al Gore came on the scene). Nowadays we do believe that disposing of electronic waste this way is extremely damaging to the environment and we wouldn’t recommend it.

So if we’re not going to throw it in the trash, where do we put all the old (by old we mean at least 3 months – ancient, right?) electronic items that we no longer want? No longer working PlayStation 1 and 2, that old Xbox with the 3 rings of death in the cupboard and dare I say it, the Wii.

There’s only so much tat you can flog on eBay. What happens when you just want to get rid of it ethically? That’s when you find an ewaste disposal company to take the old gear off your hands and recycle it. Yeah I said it, recycle.

Who knew you could take old electronic stuff and make it into new stuff?

Not only that, you can actually restore to such as state that you could turn around and sell it as ‘refurbished’ (we used to hate that word, we prefer to sound posh and call it electronic asset recovery).

For some of their fans, Chevys will always be the ultimate All-American cars. That means, if not actually (per Don Maclean) driving them ‘to the levee when the levee is dry’, then at least worshipping at the altar of the classic Corvettes and Camaros from the sixties and seventies.

That said, the company is wise to the fact that even nostalgia buffs get excited when smart technology comes their way. No surprise then that the newer models like the Sonic, Spark and Malibu, and even the new Chevrolet Camaro, come with Chevy’s Mylink Infotainment System, which for a product from a supposedly retro-minded firm, actually steps up to the tech plate pretty well.

First point to note (and congratulate Chevy on) is that the 2013 Mylink does not try to fight the smartphone any longer. That is a good thing. Why? Because previous in-car systems, while insisting on running their own platforms, inevitably soon lagged behind the yearly surge of new apps. You pay a fortune for them, and a year later you have something you feel faintly embarrassed about.
By contrast, the Mylink system is built around the principal of the driver’s smartphone being the primary source of apps. A Bluetooth connections means you can use any app you have downloaded on your phone in the car.

The obvious place to start when testing this out is in-car navigation. No longer are you forced to accept an imposed system. The choice of navigation app is yours, and while GM (Chevy’s parent) have provided their own gogolink nav app, you’re equally free to use another one such as Bringo with its choice of 2-D or 3-D map interfaces, the latter of which comes with cheery green trees on the horizon, even in the middle of a city (yes, it’s touches like that which are important).

Second key factor in the Mylink – and it builds on the first – is the integration of voice recognition. There is a touchscreen display to the dashboard mounted system, but because it’s not ideal to be fiddling with this while driving, voice recognition has long been seen as a key, but costly, feature of high level in-car infotainment. Again the Mylink’s smartphone integration does away with complications by allowing drivers to use the voice recognition installed on their own smartphones. A sophisticated app like Voice Action for Android, means you can ask for a specific song to be played from your phone’s playlist, or call up a friend in your address book, without getting something completely different because the inadequate VR thinks you’re speaking Swahili. Point scored, well done Chevy.

Are there any limitations to the Mylink? Well, some people might quibble that videos can only be viewed on the seven inch screen when the vehicle is in park transmission mode. However, on safety grounds that seems pretty sensible. What one might query is the fact that on the different models of car (Camaro, Sonic, Traverse, Malibu) offering Mylink, the physical set-up of the system is slightly different. There seems to be no good reason for that, other than perhaps to create the illusion that in the more expensive models, the Infotainment system is somehow better than in the cheaper ones. In reality, what Chevy have done in making car-infotainment smart phone compatible, is prove that a one-size-fits-all template is possible. It’s all about the smartphone, and the apps you have, not the hardware in the car. And for that they should be congratulated.
