What would Donkey Kong have looked like if it took place during the American Revolution? Well if this t-shirt is to be believed, DK himself was the King of England, and Jumpman was Georg(io) Washington, ready to liberate his new nation.

I love all of the graphics on the Chop Shop’s Donkey King t-shirt, including the little cherry tree near Washington and that little red axe instead of a mallet. And those are cannonballs being rolled down by Donkey King in place of oil drums. Of course, Georgio’s goal is to free Lady Liberty from the ape King’s tyranny.

The Donkey King t-shirt is available for $23(USD) over at Chop Shop, and can be printed on an upgraded (and appropriately patriotic) American Apparel t-shirt for an extra $3. While we’re still a couple of months away from Independence Day, there’s no reason not to be prepared early.

Robots can be awesome (and more than a little creepy at times). DARPA is about to start up a new Grand Challenge that involves robots that can walk among other things. DARPA’s Dr. Gill Pratt recently revealed that the new challenge will involve builders competing to create a humanoid robot that can accomplish a specific and rather difficult set of tasks.

The contest will apparently focus towards bipedal designs that are able to navigate rough terrain and can be used for helping during industrial disasters. The robot will have to be able to navigate through a very specific set of obstacles. To start, the robot will have to be able to maneuver itself into, and  then drive an open-frame vehicle such as a tractor to a building.

Once at the building the robot will have to get off the tractor, walk to a locked door, and unlock the door with the key. Once unlocked, the robot will have to move through the door and down a hall strewn with rubble and climb a ladder at the end of the hall. After reaching the top of the ladder, the robot will have to be able to turn off a simulated leaking pipe by turning a valve nearby and then replace a faulty pump to complete the exercise.

It’s not 100% clear if the robot will need to do all of these tasks back-to-back. Regardless, it all sounds incredibly complicated for robot that is supposed to be able to do all this with very little human interaction, other than a remote operator. DARPA also plans on controlling the communication layer, which may increase the need for robotic autonomy.

The guys at Robotics blog Hizook have much more to say on the topic, and think that Boston Dynamics’ PETMAN (shown in the video above) is a likely  candidate platform for the bipedal robot to be used.

I think anyone that has dropped a heavy object into water knows that liquid slows and softens the impact. However, you wouldn’t think liquid would be a viable option for body armor for soldiers and police. However, according to BAE Systems, some liquids are proving to be very effective body armor. The company has a new type of body armor that uses liquid and is much thinner than conventional body armor.

Traditional body armor is made out of multiple layers of Kevlar with additional metal or ceramic plates for more protection. The problem is that this very thick body armor can weigh as much as 25 pounds adding to load a soldier has to carry in a hot climate leading to earlier fatigue. BAE has developed a new type of body armor that uses what it calls Shear Thickening Liquid that has special particles that are suspended inside the liquid.

The video clip below first shows 9mm bullets being fired into 10 layers of Kevlar combined with liquid armor, then the impact on 31 layers of Kevlar alone.

When a projectile like a bullet hits the liquid, the particles lock together and spread the impact of a bullet over a larger area. That means that body armor using the special liquid can be made thinner and lighter, yet more effectively spread an impact across the surface offering greater protection to the wearer. BAE believes that the new technology could reduce the overall thickness and weight of armor by as much as 45 percent, while increasing freedom of movement.

Cheap speaker docks for your mobile device might do the trick for a while, but sooner or later you’ll want a solution that looks good and produces great sound. The new CeraAIR Two speakers are quite fetching, and they are AirPlay compatible, so you can stream music wirelessly from your iOS device or via iTunes. Plus, they seem to have solid audio specs.

The CeraAIR Two speakers can be mounted either horizontally or vertically on your walls. A Class-D amplifier drives the two bass/midrange speakers with 64 watts each and the two tweeters with 32 watts each, so it’s more than enough to fill up your room with music. The speaker also has a subwoofer out if you crave extra bass. Is also plays Internet Radio and digital audio files wirelessly or through a wired Ethernet connection. Total dimensions for the speaker are appx. 23″(w) x 6″(h) x 6″(d).

The CeraAIR Two speaker isn’t cheap, though. It retails for €599 (~$780 USD) and is available in silver, black, gold, high-gloss white, high-gloss black and custom RAL colors upon request over at Ceratec Direct.
