12 Things to considering when buying a generator

Recent advancements in technology and the rapid growth of industries has increased the need for electricity. Electricity is rapidly becoming more scarce and expensive to generate in order to meet the increasing demands of the industry. Due to the damage induced by the recent typhoon, maintenance of power plants, and rotating brown-outs, electricity is now becoming a precious commodity.

But before deciding to purchase your own generator, here are a few items you should consider:

1. Know your load - a 650 W portable generator works as well as a 900 W or higher load. Based on my experience a liter of gasoline practically last's about an hour of operation, the difference is only on the output they are capable of generating. So it would be practical to decide on what appliances or devices you really need.

2. Generators are noisy - operating the generators create noise and if your living in an area where the houses are close together. Generators could be irritating to your next door neighbor. Although there are generators that are quiter and produce lesser noise, they cost a hefty price and are quite expensive.

3. Generators produce smoke - generators burn fuel in order to produce electricity. So make sure you put your operate your generator in a well ventilated area.

4. Operating a generator is not cheap – Let’s face it with the rising cost of gasoline, operating a generator isn't exactly cheap. For our 650W & 900W generator, we average about 1 hr run time for every 1 L of gasoline. For computation purposes, let’s say that unleaded gasoline cost’s Php 50/L, this would mean that you would spend about Php 1200 for 24 hrs. operation, which is about the same amount you pay for your monthly electricity bill.

5. Brand new generators are easier to start than old ones – based on our experience, our generators get harder to start the older they get.

6. You have to drain excess gasoline from the carburator after every use – don’t forget to drain the excess gasoline from the carburetor after every use as it makes your generator hard to start.

7. A fuel additive is needed for 2 Stroke engines – a fuel additive (2T oil) is need, approximately 0.2L per 1 L of gasoline should do.

8. Not all the gasoline in the fuel tank is consumed – as much as we’d like to hope so, approximately ½ a Liter of gasoline is left in the tank.

9. You need to start your generator ideally once a week – part of maintaining your generator is having to start it up periodically. This will allow the gasoline to circulate and ensure that the motor continuously runs smoothly. Don’t make the same mistake I did, which led me to purchase a new generator.

10. Don’t overload your generator – as much as possible stick to the intended load specified on your generator. You’ll know that your generator is having problem’s with the additional load as the motor runs harder and produces a louder chocking noise.

11. Automatic switching generators are more expensive than pull types – the cost of automatic switching generators are more than double the price of their pull back counterparts.

12. Store you generators in a cool and dry environment – when not in use, make sure you place your generator in a cool and try environment to keep it from rusting & getting wet.

After going over the above checklist your now ready to purchase a suitable generator for your needs. It would be better if you use your generator to charge car batteries so you can use the electricity produced by your generator even after you run out of fuel. However, I’d suggest that your purchase your generator from a store which also does repair & maintenance of generators. We got our’s from a store at 4th Ave. Gracepark Caloocan City. Not only do they do repair, but they also allowed us to test the generator before we purchased it. The price is also half of those that are commercially available from malls. However, you’d have to pay in cash, the generator is an unknown brand but looks exactly the same as those sold in malls and there is no warranty given for the generator. We've been using it for a week now and so far it’s been working fine.

Aqua Gear All Weather Protection Case

Tired of taking pictures from the sidelines. Missed capturing candid shots in the water. Reduce the risk of getting your camera wet. Found this great water proof case at True Value ATC. The regular price for the Aqua Gear All Weather Protection Case is Php 799.75. Since it was on sale for 70% off, I only got it for Php 200++. Not bad if I may say so myself. Since, We were going to the beach the coming weekend, thought that this was a perfect opportunity to take the Aqua Gear All Weather Protection Case for a spin.

I used our Canon Power Shot AS2400IS for the Aqua Gear All Weather Protection Case. Although the size of the camera is almost exactly the same as the case, I found out that it was not an exact fit. The camera lens was not perfectly aligned to the case, so every time the camera lens extends it would bump the case and automatically turn-off. I used rubber spacers to position the camera in place.

The camera is locked and sealed into place, preventing from accidental opening and preventing dirt and water from coming in. It also comes with a strap making it easy for you to carry around. The case also provides extra protection from damage caused from from accidentally dropping or hitting your camera on hard surfaces.

Taking pictures with the Aqua Gear All Weather Protection Case is pretty decent. However, I found that you can't zoom the Canon Power Shot AS2400IS, since, access to the buttons is limited to the back and top of the camera. The Canon Power Shot AS2400IS uses a toggle switch for the zoom function which is accessed from the front of the camera.

Make sure to wipe the front of the case from time to time before taking a shot as water droplets tend to accumulate.

Base Speaker Dock for Ipod or Iphone

Found this nice Speaker Dock for Ipod or Iphone at the local surplus shop for only Php 250. Regular price normally ranges from Php 1000 to Php 2000. Same as buying from CDR-king but with a different brand. Decided to try one and see how it goes.

The Base Speaker Dock comes with a power adaptor which is connected via USB Cable. So you can connect the Speaker Dock to your car if you have a usb adaptor which connect to your vehicles cigarette lighter socket. The device is pretty much plug and play. Just connect the AC Adaptor, connect your Ipod or Iphone, and play your favorite music. The Speaker Dock also has the capacity to charge your Ipod or Iphone. Sound quality is good in enclosed spaces, but tends to be weak in open spaces. Volume output is also dependent on the sound quality of the audio file you are trying to play. But hey, for a small amount, it's a definite steal.

You can also use other audio devices , such as MP3 and Portable CD players by connecting to the line jack on the rear of the unit via the AUX in cable.

Android Hybrid 6.0 Tablet PC from Ensogo

Got an Android Hybrid 6.0 Tablet PC last January from Ensogo for less than Php 4000, using our accumulated Ensogo points non-the-less. It definitely looked good on paper and some of the videos from YouTube were very encouraging, so We decided to give it a try.

Nice clean design, makes for an elegant look and very light weight and easy to carry. Comes with built-in camera, WiFi and supposed to be compatible with a USB Broadband Stick. Have tried using Smart Bro, and 2 other versions of Globe Broadband Sticks, unfortunately none of them worked. Checked the manual inside but unfortunately these particular USB Stick models are not included in the prescribed list. USB Broadband Sticks are supposed to be just plug and play based on the indicated instructions. However, the Android Hybrid 6.0 only detects the USB Broadband Stick, but executes no response. Currently, were just connecting through the Internet via WiFi It's nice that the Android Hybrid 6.0 comes ready with pre-installed games and applications, which saves time downloading and installing basic games and applications. However, the Android Hybrid 6.0 has difficulty downloading and installing games and applications via Google Play. We currently download games on a PC and install the files through USB or Micro SD Card. Not all applications turn-off automatically once you exit a session, some have to be turned-off via device manager. This eats-up and lessens the battery life. Battery life is low, as it only lasts less than 2 hrs. of game play w/o WiFi connection enabled. Once the battery has been drained, it would take you a considerable amount of time to turn-on the device, even when the charger is connected.

Accessories include, the charger a USB Cable, USB Cable adapter where you could plug your USB device and earphones. A manual is included inside, but it's more of a product insert than an actual manual, as the instructions are very basic and straight forward. Instruction manuals are also very difficult to find on the Internet. There is no Micro SD Card included in the package, but the Android Hybrid 6.0 is able to support one.

A leather case also comes free with the package which is very handy. The Android Hybrid 6.0 is okay for something worth less than Php 4000 and besides We got it practically free from accumulated Ensogo points. But if circumstance were different, I'd get something with a more notable brand and a little kick.

After years of using wired mouses, I finally decided to shift to a wireless one. Using a wireless mouse would usually mean that you would eventually need to change the batteries or you would need to bring a separate charger for the batteries which is kind of a hassle and defeats the purpose of portability. Good think I came across the A4 Tech G11-570HX wireless rechargeable mouse. I've been using A4 Tech mouse's for as long as I could remember. I particularly like their durability (they normally break down due to physical abuse), easy of use, elegant design, and reasonable price point compared to their counterparts.

The A4 Tech G11-570HX wireless rechargeable mouse is no exception. I particularly like it's elegant design, light weight, and ease of maneuverability. By downloading A4 Tech's Office Shuttle Software, you can maximize the A4 Tech G11's special features. With 7 buttons to press, you can assign specific keys and functions to best suite your requirements. A work of caution though, as there are times that the system gets confused if your using multiple applications at the same time. The battery life is pretty decent, a full charged battery last me at least 2 weeks of an average use of 10 hrs. a day. It easily charges via a usb cable that's included in the kit. Purchasing a wireless, mouse has probably been one of the best investments I've made as I have been able to do more in a limited amount of time.

The A4 Tech G11 mouse practically moves on any surface and fires a low intensity beam which allows it to conserve on much needed battery life. The receiver also stows safely snug under the mouse when not in use.

Canon Powershot A2400IS

For quite some time now, I've been wanting to upgrade my old point and shoot camera. My 3 kids are growing up at an astronomical rate and I wanted to catch those special moments with a better quality camera. Definitely a DSLR camera captures better quality pictures than a conventional point and shoot camera. However, with the difference in price and the easy of use, a DSLR camera will not seem to fit my needs. After all, I didn't want to buy something that I didn't know how to use. The equipment is definitely only as good as it's user. Maybe sometime in the future when I get more experience and after some photography classes. But now a good point and shoot camera will be just fine.

After looking around at some the available point and shoot cameras in the market, nothing quite caught my eye as the Canon Powershot A2400 IS. At the time I bought it a couple of months back, It had some of the highest specs. vs. price range at the time.

However, here are some other things that sold me on the Canon Powershot A2400 IS:

1. 16.0 Megapixels
2. 5X Optical Zoom
3. A pretty decent battery life. A full charged battery can last an entire day of use, which is just right for people like me who like to view the pictures immediately after every shot.

4. Ease of use. No complicated functions and menus. Even on manual mode, the Canon Powershot A2400IS seems to work on automatic mode.

5. A free camera case and 4GB memory is thrown in for good measure.
6. It's elegant design, light weight, and portability is definitely a plus.
7. However, what sold me the most is Canon Powershot A2400IS's ability to capture decent quality pictures in low lighting conditions w/ or w/o the use a flash.

Got tired of working on my laptop on an uncomfortable position and decided to go out and get myself a laptop riser. Tired of carrying around a lot of mobile phones and chargers around. Be it for business or personal use, carrying around extra equipment is always a hassle. Thanks a lot to Technology and Dual Sim phones, the need for carrying around an extra mobile phone has greatly diminished. I've been going around and searching for the proper Dual Sim mobile phone to use. From all the Dual Sim phones available in the the market the Myphone and Cherry brands seem most appealing from a price and functionality stand point. After all, you normally need Dual Sim phones for call and text features. I eventually decided to get a Myphone B11 Dual Sim Phone. The fact that Myphone phones are made in the Philippines caught my attention. Availability of parts and service centers is also a nice factor to consider. Original price for the MyPhone B11 was tagged at Php 999, but after inquiring at a Mega Cellular branch at Festival Mall Alabang, I found that the price dropped down to Php 850. Without, any hesitation I decided to buy the MyPhone B11. I Have been using the MyPhone B11 for quite some time now and it has been working better than I expected. Aside from the Dual Sim feature, the MyPhone B11 also has a provision for a Micro SD Card Slot, FM radio, and MP3 player. Battery life is also great, as a fully charged battery lasts for 5 days or more. The MyPhone B11 is light weight and has an elegant design.

3. Add your desired files and hit next...

4. From the current recorder drop down menu, choose image recorder and click burn...

5. When you press next the program will ask you as to where to save the file then choose your desired location...

Was browsing through my e-mail a couple of days ago and came upon this invitation to join Seagate GoFlex's

Perfect Match Challenge. Since it was free, I decided to register online and join the challenge for the experience and just for fun. Besides the chance to get your very own Seagate Satellite, winning the travel vouchers is so tempting that you just can't miss the deal. A few days later, I received a call from Seagate informing me that I was shortlisted as one of the 30 contestants to join the challenge and informed me that they would be sending the demo unit within the next 3-5 days. True enough I received the demo unit 3 days and the challenge instructions. Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-503

Found this nice Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-503 which you can use and pair with your Iphone 3G/3GS. Haven't really tried it on other Iphone models, but I supposed it could also work. Aside from it's outstanding sound quality, you could also use this for receiving and making voice calls. Never have to worry again about those wires and enjoy true hands-free access. The Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-503 has good range of up to 10 m, I can use it when I get stuff or run errands in the house and get pretty decent connection. Battery life is also good, as a full charged battery lasted me about 5 days of operation including standby time and an average of 2-3 hrs. operation daily. The Nokia BH-503 is easy to operate and pair. It also comes with a multi-function key, forward, rewind, volume controls and a start and pause key. It also helps that the keys are embossed, so you can operate it even without looking. For a fair price compared to other available brands this headset is quite a steal. The headset fit is fixed though and you can't adjust the size to make it more comfortable.
