Earlier in the year Google started to display a daily doodle/logo change on their website to add a little fun and to educate people on important events that were either happening or had happened in the past. September 7th 2010 sees Google showing off the possibilities of css code in the form of bouncing and flitting dots that react to the movement of the mouse curser. If you move the mouse over the logo dots fly off in all directions, leave the logo alone and it settles into a bubbly looking Google logo.

CSS3 is a new form of ‘cascading style sheet’ which is set to revolutionise the way web pages and elements work. When using CSS each dot is actually a individual piece of a page called a ‘div’. The ‘div’ is combined with the other components and programmed to react in a particular way if the curser approaches it.

The logos goal is to raise awareness of the new standard in CSS which is currently undergoing tests for approval by the World Wide Web consortium, a governing body who decide what becomes standard practise for development of website coding.

CSS3 and HTML 5 allow video, animation and other dynamic web page elements to be handled in a way that does not require flash, this has proven very popular with Apples CEO Steve Jobs who sees the new coding technology as a strong alternative to Adobes Flash – this is mainly due to the fact that no Apple product currently supports Flash technology.

The whole idea of the Google doodle in our opinion is a good one, it brings news, events, history and today future news into peoples lives in a passive way.

What do you think of today’s Google Logo?

We’re always looking for a decent excuse to go back to school because apparently they are the happiest days of our lives (although we often refute this fact). The Livescribe Echo Smartpen is one seriously good reason to become a student again as it remembers everything you write and everything you hear so that you can play back audio and link them with ay notes you might happen to have taken. In the US, the Smartpen is a reasonably affordable $200 as well and you do need to buy the special paper but while it might cost a little more than the average Bic biro and notepad it’s still not extortionately priced.

With your purchase you also get free desktop software so that you can sync your notes from the pen to your PC quickly and easily while charging the Smartpen too. There’s a choice of 4GB or 8GB internal memory which is crammed into the rather bulky and awkward pen but there is an awful lot of tech that needs to be housed so it’s hardly surprising – it may, however, lead to some reasonable cramp sessions.

You can export your notes as a PDF or a LiveScribe file (which combines audio and notes) and then share them with others. There’s even an iPhone and iPad app apparently on the way that will let you play the audio files back over your favourite Apple gadgets.

And, yes, that means that there’s an app store in which you can pick up games and other useful utilities but if you intend to dip into the app store with any kind of frequency then we strongly suggest that you opt for the 8GB storage because some of the will seriously drink your memory.

Let’s be honest, most of us could probably do without the Echo Smartphone and not really notice that we’ve been hard done by, but then that’s the point of a true gadget isn’t it? We don’t HAVE to have one but we would LOVE to.

When it comes to emerging science and technology, renewable energy is right up there as one of the most widely researched and often most impressive areas. Solar energy is considered the most viable form of renewable energy because of how abundant it is in our atmosphere but solar cells are far from cheap and they don’t have the longest life that one would hope for when fitting them to the home or anywhere else.

Sunlight and oxygen is a damaging combination, unfortunately, and as well as being the reason that paper discolours when left in the sun it is also one of the reasons why solar cells often have such a short lifespan.

Professor Strano and a team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (yes, MIT) have discovered a way of integrating the photosynthetic reaction centre utilised by plants into solar cells. The end result is a solar cell that can repair itself as it becomes damaged by the constant exposure to the sun’s rays.

The solar cell is unlike anything you see on roofs or on your 1980s calculator. They use synthetic molecules called phospholipids which attach themselves to carbon nanotubes. The nanotubes also channel the flow of electrons that are created from the reaction.

OK, so it’s not you average high school science lesson, but it is science essentially imitating something that nature has been perefcting over millenia and it will have a practical use.

The ability to self repair is something that sets nature apart from science and this looks like it could be several steps closer to bridging the gap between the two. Professor Strano is now looking for a way to improve the overall solar efficiency of the cells so that they collect more solar power.

Will we soon see self repairing solar cells on houses across the country?

Talk about building the hype – the Samsung Galaxy Tab was only really officially announced at IFA last week and yet we’re already getting more than a little impatient for some actual hard details. We don’t want much, Samsung, but we’d quite like a little more than “coming soon” and we definitely want more than some wild stab in the dark regarding a release price.

However, with that hard information seriously lacking, we’re happy to go with the rumours for now so the Samsung Galaxy Tab looks likely to be released on October 11th through Vodafone and while it is being rumoured to have a $300 price tag in the USA it’s believed to have a £400 price tag here in the UK.

It is definitely being geared up for release because it now appears on the Coming Soon section of the Vodafone website so that’s as good as concrete as far as we’re concerned.

Probably one of the greatest features and one of the biggest reasons for people choosing the Galaxy over the iPad is the inclusion of Flash 10 support. This means that owners will be able to watch streaming video content on the Internet, enjoy sites like BBC, and upload and enjoy clips on YouTube; something which the Apple iPad is seriously lacking even with some of the more complex work-arounds that can be found on various forums and websites.

it also has dual cameras so that you can partake in video calling and video conferencing as well as take photos and shoot your own video clips and because it’s a Samsung running the popular FroYo 2.2 Operating System it means that you will gain access to two app marketplaces – the Samsung one and the Android one.

Will you be buying a Galaxy rather than an iPad?

Apple clearly isn’t interested in owning the touch smartphone and touch screen tablet market. They’re not even content with the ludicrously popular brand of mp3 and multimedia players they have as despite a few teething problems following its launch, it looks like they’re making a pretty good show of social networking too. Apple’s new Ping social network has made it to the 1 million user milestone just 48 hours after it was launched and their smug representatives believe that this figure will continue to grow and grow to new heights.

Ping is supposed to be more of a niche social network than the likes of Facebook. It is primarily geared towards music lovers, especially obvious when you consider that it was released just in time for the iTunes 10 release. Users can follow their favourite artists as well as their friends and keep up to date with the latest goings on in the music industry.

Essentially, everybody that downloaded iTunes 10 was encouraged to become a member of Ping and with 3 million downloads, that means an impressive conversion rate of 1 in 3. However, the site has been subject to a couple of problems already.

Apparently, Apple had initially wanted to join forces with Facebook when the service was released but their demands were too high and Steve Jobs was adamant that he would protect the Apple name and fortune. As such, the Facebook button which had appeared on Beta versions and screenshots was replaced with an Email Friends link.

Ping has also joined the ranks of social networking sites to be hit by spammers, meaning it’s passed yet another milestone very early on in its lifetime. Users (whose credit card details are linked in some way to their accounts) are encouraged by spammers to fill in a short survey to be in with a chance of receiving a free iPhone 4 – the irony isn’t lost on us.

Are you a Ping member yet or do you still prefer Facebook?

Let us know on Facebook (we’re not on Ping yet).

There’s been a whole host of IFA news this week as you would imagine and Europe’s largest tech and gadget exhibition hasn’t failed to disappoint. As predicted and expected a lot of attention was paid to 3D TV and 3D gaming because that’s pretty much where we’re all at in terms of what we want next.

LG was the busiest 3D bunny on show. In an exclusive announcement they said that they would be extending their 3D agreement with Sky 3D to provide more 3D goodies. They also unveiled nano technology that will mean considerably smaller TVs with much better quality and showed off a 31″ OLED TV. Sony also launched its 3D Home Projector and Samsung gave away more details on its iPad competing Galaxy Tab.

Away fropm IFA, Mafia 2 took the top spot in the gaming charts although we stand by the fact that the game is far too linear and short even if it does look incredible and bear the name Mafia in the title. Angry Birds is still top of the app charts making it probably the most popular game in the world. We took a look at Kinectimals, one of the potentially dire releases for the Kinect, and we reported on XBox Live subscription costs increasing along with the release of an audio upgrade and Avatar 2.0.

In green eco-news the Sony Ericsson Elm was listed as O2′s most environmentally friendly phone but the list didn’t include the iPhone or Blackberry smartphones (although neither was likely to come anywhere near the top). If buying an eco-friendly phone isn’t enough then you could wear a dress made from expired condoms (not recycled in the usual sense, thankfully) and underpants made from bananas.

And, finally, review site Reevoo gave us details of unpublishable complaints they’ve had in the past few years. The French, apparently, are the most likely to swear about the stuff they buy with the Russians the least likely and us Brits being the 2nd least likely.

The Apple iPad seemingly came out of nowhere and for no real, discernable reason it stole the hearts and money of the masses. In reality, it offers little more functionality than a decent smartphone but without the actual phone settings and it didn’t have the power of a standard laptop.

Take away the touch screen, the Apple branding, and the app store and it was a poor netbook for twice the price of a decent one. And yet, somehow, it became one of the biggest tech phenomenon we’ve seen in some years so it was only a matter of time before something a little bit better was released to compete but will the Samsung Galaxy Tab be able to take any of the iPad’s popularity?

As a standalone unit, the Galaxy Tab seems to have the competition beat. It offers phone calls and text messaging as well as access to the ever-growing list of Android apps that are available. Another biggy for the iPad detractors is that the Galaxy also offers Flash support making web browsing a more pleasurable and well rounded experience.

The Samsung Galaxy has a 7 inch TFT screen making it a couple of inches smaller than the iPad but also making it more convenient at just larger than the size of a paper back book. It has front and rear facing cameras so it can be used for video calling as well as photo taking and video recording.

Connectivity is obviously an important factor and the Samsung tablet offers high speed Internet via HSUPA and HSDPA. It also has Wi-Fi and bluetooth.

With 1080p high definition playback and support for Flash, DivX, XVid, MPEG-4, and more it’s also a very handy multimedia player.

Apps can make or break a device like this and the Samsung Galaxy offers access to two app marketplaces. It comes with a variety of different apps pre-installed and if you want more you can get them from the Android marketplace or the Samsung marketplace.

We reckon it’s unlikely that anything will take the iPad’s crown from it but in the Samsung Galaxy Tab we have a contender that potentially packs more punch, offers greater features, and also provides access to a decent amount of apps. It will therefore, we think, steal a few of Apple’s potential customers.

Will you be buying the Samsung or plumping for the Apple?

There was a lot of exciting TV’s on show at IFA 2010, some had interesting features and all manufactures went big with 3D but they were all shown up by LG’s new and innovative LEX8 Nano LED TV. The new TV utilizes a brand new kind of LCD panel; the LEX8 has an ultra thin layer in front of the direct LED back lighting. The neat thing here is the film is covered in microscopic holes that allow light to escape through resulting in brighter pictures and more vivid colour.

I spoke with George Mead of LG about the TV and he explained how LG has produced the worlds first Nano LED TV. We talked about other manufacturers and he explained what made LG different, I had already looked at the other manufactures offerings and agreed that LG has done a stellar job. The LEX8 looks attractive and impressive, the frame appears to be brushed aluminium and is only 8.8mm wide. There are thinner LED TV’s available but they only use edge LED where LG uses full LED backlighting, a major advantage.

This innovation means bright colours, fantastic motion control all with almost no reflection. You must remember we were under the lights of trade showroom, even with thousands of lights shining on the screen there was hardly any reflection and the picture looked great. The demo reel on the display booth mixed both slow and fast action film; this was useful when considering the brand new 400 Hz TruMotion technology. It was a pleasure to see fluid pictures with a crisp edge free of motion blur or wobbles. LG had prepared a fantastic variety of test footage which showed off the LEX8’s specs – very impressed.

The downfall of many LCD televisions is contrast can be sacrificed, LG have removed this problem by utilizing accurate/localised dimming. Dark pictures have depth even under the light of the showroom. It is obviously impossible to give a final verdict until we see it in normal conditions.

When LG put this beauty on sale it will come equipped with their new smart TV solution accompanied with magic motion remote – this will allow users to access features like catch up TV, TV on demand and web apps. The excitement at the show booth was plain to see and I left wanting one, I think this is the hottest TV of the year and I can’t wait until it is released.

LG wowed the gadget world when they launched their 15 inch OLED TV last year and the trend continued at this years trade fair IFA in Berlin. We were lucky enough to attend and take a detailed look at a prototype model of LG’s brand new 31 inch OLED and spoke with George Mead about the details surrounding the future of TV display.

From the front the 31 inch oled looks like a very crisp photograph that has been professionally framed and then mounted flush on the wall. Seriously this photograph proves our point, it looks almost photo shopped in – it’s just that good looking and thin (2.9mm to be exact).

The 31 inch screen (1920 x 1080) offers full HD and is 3D cross talk free, we tried out the screen at the show and LG really have hit the nail on the head with this TV, they claim an infinite contrast ratio and from the various positions we stood and took pictures we would have to confirm the claims.

The TV is equally beautiful and impressive from both the side and rear profile, LG had set up the stand with a rotating plinth so we could get a fantastic view of the whole TV. At this stage it is still a prototype but looks amazing, people where literally looking at it in awe. At one stage we even spotted two guys in Panasonic shirts looking at the units on display, they looked green with envy.

When quizzed on the price George Mead commented “At this stage the 31 inch OLED is a prototype, we do not have a price for it yet”. All was said with a tiny grin on his face which suggested it won’t be cheap (some blogs have estimated prices in excess of £6000). After speaking with LG it was clear they are proud of their product and they should be. In our opinion they have created the future of television, we walked away from their stand with a smile on our face, a few videos and some fantastic photographs to share with you all.

IFA is well under way and as expected there’s already been a mass of interest in 3D being displayed by both exhibitors and punters. Interest has peaked especially in the 3D home projector from Sony that claims to bring the beauty of 3D cinema into the home.

The VPL-VW90ES 3D projector is Sony’s first foray into this particular segment of the market and it means that you can enjoy 3D films, while wearing funky glasses, without having to worry about getting up and going for a pee halfway through the film. You also don’t have to spend the kids’ inheritance just to get a hot dog and some popcorn or suffer at the hands of other people’s screaming children and obnoxious mobile phones.

The projector uses the same kind of technology that Sony has perfected in its 3D TV range and is designed to feel natural for the eyes; hopefully meaning less headache thanks to the minimised cross talk.

Sony VPL-VW90ES - 3D Home Cinema Experience Coming In November

3D is projected in full 1080p high definition and it will attempt to basically upscale 2D movies into 3D equivalents although the success of this remains to be seen. As well as watching films and other media on the projector you can also use it to further increase the immersion into gaming worlds playing titles like Gran Turismo 5 projected onto massive screens or straight onto your wall.

The VW90 will be available in mainland Europe in November of this year and Sony claims it is easy to put up and install. It can also be personalised to work in rooms of any size and setting and it can even be customised depending on the type of content and runs at just 22db so is very quiet.
