You need to leave your game and go to your messages to actually read the message text, then press several more buttons before you can reply. In an age of instantaneous communication, it feels like Sony can't quite let go of the snail-mail paradigm.

Sony's navigation and social features might be half-baked, but everything that revolves around games works quite well. Every game has to be installed to the hard drive, but you can play games while they install. It only took five minutes from the time we popped in the Killzone Shadow Fall disc until I was playing the first level. Once you're in a game you can instantly jump back to the home screen and fire up the web browser, change settings, or check notifications without having to quit your game, and you can instantly jump right back in again exactly where you left off. And if your friends are online, you can loop them into a party and not have to deal with the messaging system at all you can all use voice chat to communicate, and automatically drag them into multiplayer games as well.

Though the UI is plenty speedy when you’re just browsing through games to play, it can bog down when you suspended a game. I even saw it freeze solid on several occasions, which is extremely worrying. I’m not sure what the culprit might be, but it seems that the PS4 doesn’t free up resources for other tasks while a game is paused this way. You can’t have more than one game suspended, either you’ll be prompted to shut down the game you’re leaving.

The optional $60 PlayStation Camera is essentially pointless right now, without any camera-based games, but it does make the PS4’s interface a tiny bit more convenient. It can quickly jump you to any title in your library if you say the word "PlayStation" and the name of the game. It can also recognize your face to automatically log you in to the console though you’ll also have to hold up your controller as well and has a few more voice commands like "Take Screenshot," "Back to Home" to jump out of a game, and "Power" to turn the console off.

A forgotten home theater
It's odd, in a way, that Sony touts the PS3 as the most-watched Netflix device on the planet, and yet so clearly demotes it and the other media apps on the PlayStation 4. There are a dozen apps at launch, running down the list of usual suspects Netflix and Hulu, Amazon and Crackle, Redbox Instant and Vudu. There are apps for the NHL and NBA and something called YuppTV. Every PS4 system also comes with a built-in web browser.

All of the apps look good and work well, except the web browser, which is only slightly less sluggish and terrible than the one that came with the PS3. Any modern smartphone does a better job. But the Netflix app, which has been recently redesigned across platforms, looks great on the big screen. And between Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, there's little to want for in terms of mainstream content. But these apps are very clearly not a core part of the PS4 experience they're buried in a TV & Video section of the home screen row, after Sony's proprietary Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited apps.

As if to fully prove its point that the PS4 is a gaming machine and not a media receiver or a home theater PC, Sony's actually stripped away the local playback functionality that was so useful on the PS3 (though the company may be changing its tune on that to some extent). Even when I plugged in a Sony camera, I couldn’t access its pictures or video. It feels like overkill why needlessly remove useful functionality from such a powerful, versatile machine?

The answer, right or wrong, is obvious Because it's not about games. And the PS4 is all about games.

A new game library
In the long run, the launch-day game selection won’t matter. The games that launched the PS3 in 2006, including Resistance Fall of Man and Ridge Racer 7, in no way still define the console today. And Sony’s already talking about the great games coming soon to the PlayStation 4, like Uncharted 4 and a new Infamous.

But the two dozen or so launch titles for the console are unlikely to satisfy the exact gamer Sony’s trying so desperately to court and that may be disappointed with what’s available for the console they pre-ordered. Electronic Arts, Activision, Warner Bros, and Ubisoft have all committed some of their biggest franchises there’s Need for Speed Rivals for racing, Injustice Gods Among Us for (superhero) fighting, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag for stealth-killing, and of course the war-torn shooters Call of Duty Ghosts and Battlefield 4 not to mention all kinds of sports courtesy of both EA and Take-Two.

The PlayStation's three next-gen-exclusive titles are all from Sony itself. Killzone Shadow Fall is a visually stunning but ultimately uninspired first-person shooter. Knack, a more family-friendly platformer in the vein of Crash Bandicoot, is fun but often far too repetitive. It does have the honor, however, of being one of the few non-sports titles to support local multiplayer co-op.

It's not that any of the games we've played are bad quite the opposite, in fact it's just that they're almost exactly what you'd expect. Aside from visual enhancements, the games played largely identically to their current-generation versions. There's comfort in picking up Battlefield 4 and knowing exactly what to do, but for many, the improved physics and lighting won't be enough of a difference. In some games, especially Need for Speed Rivals, we suffered some pretty annoying framerate issues when too much was happening on the screen. Nothing we saw really took our breath away, and nothing looked better than what you get with a good gaming PC.

The standout game at launch is Resogun, which is actually free to download for PS Plus subscribers (which you will be, if you want to play online multiplayer). The game is developed by Housemarque Studios, who did the equally bright-and-manic-shoot-em-up Super Stardust HD for the PS3. At its core, it's a side-scrolling space shooter (think Defender), where you blast everything in sight while flying around a cylindrical stage avoiding enemy fire. It's a surprisingly strong showcase for the PS4's ability to render numerous objects at once at a consistent framerate, and it’s a great online co-op title.

Very few PS4 launch titles will withstand the test of time, but they're not supposed to. In many ways, these games serve a broader purpose to showcase publisher support and, on a more base level, to ensure the gamut of genres is represented. What next-gen gaming is right now is crisper graphics, more dynamic lighting, and farther draw distances. What next-gen gaming will ultimately be is something else something the PS4 appears to be powerful enough to handle.

But as long as you like shooting things with friends, there’s plenty to shoot while you wait for better games. Even as Call of Duty Ghosts and Battlefield 4 are far from reasons to buy a new game console, there are plenty of guns to unlock, levels to earn and vehicles to pilot in the meanwhile.

Share and Share Alike
Sony has made broadcast a big deal for the PlayStation 4 so much so that it has a dedicated button on the controller. Pressing the Share button anywhere will let you capture a screenshot or video of the last 15 minutes of whatever you were just playing, or even broadcast your screen live to Twitch.tv or Ustream. Captured content is organized automatically in folders, and there’s not much you can do in the way of editing. Uploading seems a bit inconsistent right now while we managed to upload a screenshot earlier, as of this writing we can’t get past the "Please Wait…" screen when trying to upload video. We’re also not seeing consistently high-quality video streams when broadcasting, but that could just be early days.

A glimpse at the future
There are two optional peripherals for the PS4 one not even technically a peripheral that together show off some of the most enticing possibilities of Sony's new console. One is the $60 PlayStation Camera, which is incredibly basic for now, but could potentially become something as vital to the PS4 as the Kinect is to the Xbox One.

The other is the $200 PlayStation Vita, the portable console that never really became a viable platform in its own right, but now doubles as a second screen and supplementary controller for the PS4. It can be set up to mirror the console's screen, essentially allowing you to stream games from the PS4 to your Vita from anywhere. It works remarkably well there's just enough lag that fast-twitch shooters will almost immediately become futile journeys into certain death, but for games like Madden and even Need for Speed Rivals it works. The Vita can even turn on the PS4 remotely if it’s in standby mode, so you don’t have to get up and find a controller if you’re playing from bed. The only real problem to speak of is that games for 40-inch-plus TVs don't always look good on a 5-inch screen, and that as you get further away from your console and router the lag starts to become overwhelming.

It portends a future like the one Sony says it imagines, where you're constantly able to watch other people play, play yourself from a variety of devices, and always be connected to the same gaming experience no matter where you are. Hopefully Remote Play is just the beginning of that implementation.

The Vita is a good controller for some PlayStation 4 games, but breaks down on anything more complex. The DualShock 4's touchpad is mapped to the Vita's touchscreen, and Start and Select on the Vita become Option and Share, respectively, for the PS4. The additional triggers (L2, R2) and the "click" of the DualShock joysticks (L3, R3) are mapped to the four quadrants of the PS Vita's rear touchpad, and that's where things get a little hairy. While some games like Killzone automatically detect Remote Play and intelligently change up the buttons to make the Vita a better controller, not all titles do.

The Vita can also be used as a second-screen supplement to the PS4, much like the PlayStation app for iOS and Android. The app is relatively bare-bones, allowing you to access all your PlayStation Plus information from anywhere. You can make friends, send messages, and even buy games and initiate downloads from another device as soon as you get back to your PS4, the game will be ready and waiting for you.

Just as SmartGlass has seemingly limitless opportunities for ways you can see, understand, and even interact with whatever you're playing or watching on your TV, the PlayStation apps give you a way to broaden the gaming experience. And if you have a Vita? You can actually take the whole experience with you. If nothing else, this is what the Wii U GamePad should have been.

The PlayStation 3 is a remarkably different device today than it was seven years ago, when Fatman Scoop showed it to the world. And so will the PlayStation 4 be, seven years from now, probably in ways neither Sony nor I can possibly guess. Right now it’s a fast, powerful console with a great controller and a mostly useful interface and though there are plenty of bugs and quirks, the only real problem right now is that there’s not a single game that will make anyone leap off their couch to buy a console.

What Sony's done, though, is mark its territory. Stake its claim. Sony's not making big, grand gestures about the future of the living room the way Microsoft is, or attempting to alter the way we watch TV and talk to our families. It just wants us to play games. The PlayStation 4 is absolutely, unequivocally a gaming console for people who want to play video games, and it never pretends to be anything else. And even though the games aren't yet there for Sony as is really always true with launch titles for consoles they will be. Sony's earned the benefit of the doubt on that.

For right now, though, there's little incentive to spend $399 on a PlayStation 4. Not only are there few games worth the price of admission, the vast library of PS3 games is more compelling than anything the PS4 currently offers. If you're desperate for a new console, rest assured that eventually the PS4 will be one; it has plenty of power, a great controller, and a lot of good ideas about how we can play games better and how we can play them together. But for right now, they’re mostly still just ideas.

Sony Xperia Z3v Review

Sony Xperia Z3v Review - Sony has a rough time selling phones in the US. While it has managed to become one of the few Android makers to turn a profit on the backs of its global sales, Sony’s presence in the US has been crippled by delayed launches and carrier exclusives. If you’ve wanted to purchase a flagship Sony smartphone, such as the Z1 or Z2, you were forced to either be a T-Mobile customer, or pay full retail price for an unlocked device six months after it was readily available in other markets. (And if you wanted a Z1 Compact, your choices were even worse.)

With the new Xperia Z3, Sony is addressing this problem, or at least starting to. The Z3 proper, already available in global markets, will be hitting T-Mobile shortly, while Verizon is getting a special variant called the Z3v.

The $199.99 Xperia Z3v has the same display, same processor, and same camera as the Z3. But it’s notably different in a few important ways: it doesn’t have the Z3’s updated design or metal frame and looks more like the six-month-old Z2 than the current Z3. It also has some Verizon-specific requirements, like wireless charging and a ton of bloatware nobody ever asked for.

For Verizon customers, the Z3v is the first Sony smartphone they’ve had access to since 2011’s ill-fated Xperia Play, a hardware curiosity that proved to be neither a great smartphone, nor a great gaming device. The Z3v represents the best of Sony’s phone division, at least on the inside. And it’s what inside that counts, right?

After using the Xperia Z3v for the past week, I’m not so sure.

The Z3 represents a step forward for Sony smartphone design. It’s thinner, softer, and rounder than the Z1 and Z2 that preceded it, and it’s much nicer looking and more comfortable to hold as a result. My colleague Vlad Savov did an excellent job enumerating the improvements in his review of the Z3, I strongly suggest you check it out.

But the Z3v doesn’t have any of those design improvements. It’s essentially a Z2 with a slightly faster processor, and a new name. The Z2 wasn’t a very comfortable phone to hold, and the Z3v’s slightly larger dimensions only make it more unwieldy. The sides are plastic instead of metal, and the edges are square instead of rounded. While the Z3 looks like a thoroughly modern flagship smartphone for 2014, the Z3v looks like a recycled design from last year, which is exactly what it is.

It’s not clear why the Z3v doesn’t have the design flair of the Z3, but it does come with a couple Verizon-specific features. The first is integrated wireless charging, which is convenient, if not crucial. The other is a giant Verizon logo above the display, which is neither necessary nor wanted, but an obvious cost of Sony having to get in bed with a carrier. Otherwise, the Z3v retains the water resistant capabilities (and requisite annoying cover over its Micro USB port) as the Z3 and the Z2 before it.

The 5.2-inch, 1080p display is just as excellent on the Z3v as it is on the Z3, with good resolution, acceptable brightness, and good viewing angles. It works well outdoors and has accurate colors, even if it’s not the highest resolution screen you can get.

Aside from its dated appearance, the Z3v is a solid, if unassuming phone. The black review unit I have looks fairly generic, but Sony is offering a white model if you want something with more flair. There’s nothing really to complain about with the phone’s build quality — seams are tight and nothing flexes in awkward ways — but none of it engenders an emotional response or even the occasional "wow" from passersby that other smartphones might.

Under the skin, the Xperia Z3v has the same performance chops of its better looking cousin: a fast Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, and a generous 3200mAh battery. Performance is fast and fluid, on par with any other high-end Android phone you can get today, and the battery easily lasts multiple days (aided by Sony’s actually useful battery management features).

The Z3v’s camera is also impressive — it’s the same 20.7-megapixel unit found in the Z3 (but with the Z2's lens), and there is a wealth of shooting modes and features for photography. Pictures taken in good light look excellent, on par with the best in the smartphone photography world, but low light images can be a little disappointing. The Z3v’s camera also suffers from the same inconsistencies as the Z3’s, requiring multiple shots to make sure you have a usable one in the end. Still, it’s one of the best cameras you can get on an Android smartphone, and most people will be happy with its results.

The Z3v has the same Android 4.4 KitKat-based software as the Z3, with a logical and inoffensive interface. It’s far less garish than the interfaces you might find on a Samsung or LG, or even Sony’s older phones, and it’s easy enough to customize to your liking.

Unfortunately, Verizon has decided to load the the Z3v up with an offensive amount of preloaded apps and bloatware, which offer little no utility and only serve to confuse. Do I really need both the Amazon Kindle app and the Kobo e-book reader app on my phone out of the box? Worse, while some of the preloaded apps can be removed, many can’t. They can only be "disabled," which keeps them on the phone but hides them from view and prevents them from running. Fortunately, the 32GB of internal storage in the Z3v provides enough space that disabled apps shouldn’t present too much of an issue for most users.

The Z3v will get Sony’s PS4 Remote Play at some point in November, which will let you stream games from a PS4 to the handset, and Sony has a Dual Shock controller mount to facilitate better gameplay. That’s a feature no other smartphone outside of Sony’s lineup offers, and it could be a compelling thing if you are a big PS4 gamer.

The thing that’s so frustrating about the Xperia Z3v is the fact that Sony itself makes something that’s better and Verizon customers won’t have access to it. That’s not to say the Z3v is a bad phone — it performs great, has a solid camera, and awesome battery life, making it one of the best Android options on the carrier.

But while the Z3v has all of the technical merits of the Z3 (and then some, if you count wireless charging), it lacks any of the Z3’s emotional appeal or lustworthiness. It’s thicker, chunkier, clumsier, and just plain uglier than Sony’s true flagship.

The Android world is jam-packed with great phones that also have great, compelling designs — the new Moto X and HTC’s excellent One M8 both immediately come to mind as phones I want to look at and caress as much as I want to use. This isn’t the first time Verizon customers have had to deal with sub-par designs on otherwise good phones (the Nokia Lumia Icon and anything Droid-branded in the past couple of years are prime examples). But it’s still frustrating and downright confusing why Sony didn’t bring its best effort to the largest carrier in the US, where it has the most potential to turn around its fortunes here.

If you do buy the Z3v, you’re getting a solid, waterproof device that performs as well as any other Android phone available today. But you’re not getting Sony's best effort this year.

Android 4.4 KitKat Review - Designed by Google, For Google - In 2011, Google introduced Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich," which took some of the design direction it had begun on tablets and moved it to phones. In the intervening two years, we've only seen "point" updates for the platform some subtle refinements and a few big new features, but never a big 5.0 update. Google sees it as a “mature” operating system it doesn’t have to reinvent the design or the core features, it just has to make them run faster, better, and prettier. With Android 4.4 "KitKat," that trend continues, but this time around the refinements add up to something more but not how you might expect.

Google always introduces a new version of Android alongside a new Nexus device this time it's on the excellent Nexus 5. But where we used to think of the Nexus as simply the device that offers the purest, least skinned version of Android, the Nexus 5 offers a vision of Android that includes more of Google's entire ecosystem than ever before. KitKat may have the most visual polish of any version of Android, but the most important features are unique to the Nexus 5 and uniquely Google.

KitKat is Android's biggest step yet into what Google believes is the future of mobile ambient information, tied tightly to the company's intelligent cloud services, available on cheap and powerful devices. It's an ambitious plan for the future, but what is it like to use today?

Design, refined
Throughout the entire OS, Android looks cleaner and brighter. It’s also whiter, excising the vast majority of the blue color that once defined Android’s look and feel. Google even switched how it handles translucency throughout the OS, replacing the dark black overlays with a semi-transparent white. The overall effect is an OS that feels less, well, robotic.

The switch from blue to white applies to the status bar and the button bar more than anywhere else. The status bar and bottom button bar are also translucent in some places, allowing the wallpaper and certain apps to bleed in underneath.

Google will also allow some apps to go full-screen more easily, completely hiding the status bar and button bar. It's something that was possible before, but the behavior now makes a lot more sense. Now it's up to developers to exercise restraint with these new options but Google has led by example, only using them sparingly itself.

Earlier attempts at polishing up Android never really got into the nooks and crannies of the OS, but this time the effort seems much more comprehensive. There are new rounded pop-over dialogs that look much better than before, a new "Condensed Roboto" that Google sprinkles in appropriate places, and even small things like what a button looks like when pressed have been updated to be more subtle and less in your face.

Strange as it may seem, the Clock app might be the best place to sum up Google's design thinking. It's been updated with a new look, and has the new radial time-picker that was first introduced in the calendar earlier this year. The whole thing still feels distinctively "Android," but with a more balanced layout, an approachable and intuitive interface, and improved fonts.

Ready for launch
While many users will hardly notice KitKat's softened edges and cleaner lines, you can't miss the new Nexus 5 launcher, which is easily the biggest change in Android 4.4. It epitomizes Google's new strategy with the Nexus line it's all about Google.
The new launcher's biggest functional change is that it fully integrates Google Now. It's available on the leftmost screen, just a swipe away from the main home screen, though you can still access it with a swipe up from the home button in any other app. When you're in the Launcher, Now listens for you to say "okay Google" and will jump right into a voice search. It's very similar to what Google-subsidiary Motorola did with the Moto X, but unfortunately it only works within the Launcher and it doesn't appear to be able to customize itself to only respond to your voice commands.

Google Now also is seeing a steady progression of features. Google says it's made a 25 percent improvement in speech recognition, and it shows. Speaking to Google Now results in more accurate text than ever, and if it gets it wrong you can tap on a word to replace it with the right one. Google can also surface web pages it thinks you’ll want to see based on your location.

But the biggest change to Google Now will launch in a few weeks. Google is setting up partnerships with app developers to allow the search company to scan their app's content. That means that Google Now will be able to give you a button to launch an app directly to the information that relevant to your query, not just a web page. It's a small thing to start there are only 10 launch partners, like restaurant reservations from OpenTable but extending its search power into the app ecosystem could open up new opportunities for Google.

Google also decided that the big screen-real estate on the Nexus 5 deserved larger icons (in lieu of cramming more of them in a row), and the result is surprisingly accessible. The app drawer is also simpler it's a grid of app icons and nothing more. To get to widgets, you need to revert back to the old long-press behavior, but once you do you're greeted with an easier-to-understand list of re-arrangeable home screens and shortcuts to add widgets and change your wallpaper.

While all of these changes are welcome, what’s most notable about them is they’re all exclusive to the Nexus 5 at least for now. KitKat’s best features are, for better or worse, only available on the Nexus 5. If ever there was a "Google Phone," this is it.

Hangouts
Hangouts also gets a big update with KitKat finally integrating SMS and MMS with everything else it offers. In fact, it replaces the default Messaging app from the core of Android entirely, although you can still download a third-party SMS app and use that instead.

And you might want to, since the SMS integration in Hangouts isn't all that great. Google makes you "tie" SMS messages to one Google account if you have two, you'll need to remember which account they live in. What's worse, SMS messages do not appear in the same conversation thread as your Hangouts messages they're cordoned off in their own thread. Many other smartphone operating systems get this right iMessages on iOS both auto-detects and threads SMS, and hell, webOS got this right from the start. Google did tell me that it's working on it, writing, "initially, we're focused on the core SMS experience on Hangouts for Android. We're working hard to make the SMS experience on Hangouts even better over time."

"Hangouts needs to decide what it wants to be when it grows up"

Honestly, it's not clear yet just what Google wants to do with Hangouts. It could be positioned as an iMessage competitor, but Google is still shying away from auto-detecting whether your recipient uses Hangouts. With Hangouts On Air, it also weirdly mixes live video broadcasting into your private messaging client. Last but not least, there's Google Voice to contend with. Currently, you can't send text messages from your Google Voice number within Hangouts, though the company promises that is coming. That's quite a lot for a single app.

On top of all that, Google has Hangouts on multiple platforms many of which it doesn’t directly control. That makes creating something that works like iMessage especially difficult, and could go some way towards explaining (but not excusing) why Google made the choice to not thread SMS. On the bright side, you can change your notification sound for SMS so they don't sound like incoming Hangouts messages, and there are new little icons indicating whether or not the person you're talking to is on a phone.

All that said, having SMS within Hangouts is at least a step forward, even though it's hard to know what direction Google is walking in and easy to see that there are many more steps ahead. For me, I'm just happy to have one less icon I'm trying to cram into my home screen.

Phone home
With core apps like the Launcher and SMS getting Googlified, it makes perfect sense that the phone app would get the same treatment. Instead of presenting you with a simple number pad, the main screen is now a listing of the people you call most often or who call you most often. Google says it determines who is up top algorithmically, and in my testing it did a pretty good job of that. Since version 4.3, the number pad itself is smart too it will use T9 to let you search your contacts instead of just dialing, something I've been waiting for on a Nexus device for a very long time.

The other big feature in the dialer is the ability to search businesses directly. Google uses its extensive Maps database to search for local businesses, so when you call, it shows a photo associated with the business and names it appropriately in your call log so when a business calls you, you know who's calling.

Productivity
"Productivity" has been the watchword in mobile of late thanks to the back and forth between Microsoft and Apple on their respective tablets. Google is still part of that discussion, however, especially now that QuickOffice is preinstalled on KitKat. The new version has a cleaner look that's more in line with the rest of the OS, but still isn’t quite as feature-rich as Apple’s iWork suite. There's still a strange divide between QuickOffice and Google Docs on Android, unfortunately QuickOffice can't open Google Docs from Google Drive, to say nothing of the strangeness of having both Drive and QuickOffice offer similar document functionality.
There are other utilitarian touches to note. There's a new Downloads app that's much better looking and easier to navigate. The File Picker, which you use to open files and attach them, now has a cleaner and easier to understand interface. It also integrates with cloud services Google Drive, Dropbox, and others so you can add files from any service within any app.

There's new printing functionality it's easy to print to Google Print services or some HP printers, and there's even an option to print to PDF locally. That last feature is the kind of thing that I use on a regular basis on my desktop and never thought to wish for on a mobile OS, but it shows that Google is serious about making KitKat a full-featured OS that doesn't need to be thought of as a second-class OS citizen especially on tablets.

The stock email app has long felt ignored on Android, but with KitKat it has finally received a big update. Essentially, it looks and acts exactly like Google's Gmail app including the sliding panels, swipe to delete, and everything else but for Exchange and IMAP users. Although it doesn't seem to intelligently thread emails, having an email app that doesn't feel hobbled compared to the main Gmail app is a big deal.

Performance

In my view, it’s the best smartphone on the market, when you combine its hardware, all-new operating system, and the Apple ecosystem whose doors it opens. That includes a new service called Apple Pay for buying goods in stores and online electronically via the phone; it’s due next month. Apple Pay will only work with these latest iPhones, and Apple’s forthcoming smartwatch.

But this review is just part of the story. While I’ve been testing the iPhone 6, my three colleagues on Re/code’s reviews team have been testing the rest of Apple’s new iPhone and iPhone-related products. Price
The iPhone 6 will start at $199 with a two-year contract for a 16 gigabyte model. Apple is raising the memory on the two higher-priced models, for the same prices they cost on the 5s. For $299, you get 64GB, up from 32GB, and for $399 you get a whopping 128GB, up from 64GB. Without a contract, the three versions cost $650, $750, and $850, respectively.

Which one to get?
Apple sees the iPhone 6 as the direct successor to the iPhone 5s, and as the more mainstream of the two models a smartphone with a bigger screen and other improvements. So do I. The iPhone 6 Plus is really a different category, a cross between a smartphone and a small tablet, or “phablet.” If you love your iPhone, but want a significantly larger screen, I’d go with the regular 6. If you want something much, much larger something different and you love the iPhone, then the Plus is probably for you.

Design
Recent iPhones have rounded corners, but they have flat edges and a screen that stops sharply at the phone body’s edge. The iPhone 6 is thinner, and has curved edges. The screen’s borders also curve slightly to meet the body, and the areas to the top and bottom of the screen have been reduced. The power switch has been moved from the top to the side, for easier access on the taller phone.

The result is that Apple has managed to grow the screen’s real estate by 38 percent compared to the iPhone 5s display, while making the overall volume of the phone just 13 percent larger, and its footprint just 22 percent larger. In my tests, it still fit very comfortably in my hand, in the pockets of my jeans, and even in a shirt pocket.

Bigger screen
Apple last expanded the iPhone’s screen in 2012, when it gave the iPhone 5 a four-inch display, without making it wider, while actually reducing its weight and thickness. But even then, its screen was smaller than that of its chief competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S, which at the time had a 4.8-inch display.

That iPhone, and its four-inch successor, the 5s, proved very popular. At first, larger, wider phones seemed weird (I even compared holding the first Samsung Note to your face to “talking into a piece of toast.”) But for many people, especially in certain countries, the iPhone’s screen began to seem too small, as competing models appeared with bigger and bigger screens.

So the iPhone 6’s 4.7-inch screen is a catch-up feature.

But it’s very well done. It has the same 326 pixels per inch as the 5s, and a higher resolution that allows it to display 720p high-definition video (Apple now calls it the “Retina HD Display”). In my tests, text, photos and videos appeared clear, sharp and vivid, with great color that avoids the oversaturation I have found in some Samsung models.

And, despite the larger screen, all my apps by Apple and third parties just worked. None that I tested looked distorted or blurry. Apple says its App Store now offers 1.3 million apps, a new high.

The iPhone 6 screen is still smaller than the display on the latest Galaxy, which measures 5.1 inches, but the new Apple is narrower, and substantially thinner and lighter, even though it’s made of metal, and not the plastic used by Samsung, which to me feels cheap.

Wireless
Apple says the new iPhones have faster Wi-Fi and faster cellular LTE. In my tests, I found the iPhone 6’s Wi-Fi speeds both downstream and upstream were roughly double those of the 5s, and about 25 percent faster than those of the Samsung Galaxy S5. But I saw little difference in LTE speeds, either on Verizon or AT&T. The 6 and 6 Plus also have a new type of very short-range wireless, NFC, to enable Apple Pay. This is another catch-up feature. Some other phones have had NFC for a while.

Battery
Battery life on phones depends heavily on how you use them. In my daily use, the iPhone 5s generally lasted from eight to 10 hours between charges. But during my week of testing, the iPhone 6 did better, going 14 or 15 hours. Most people will still have to charge it nightly, but won’t be hunting for plugs during the day.

Camera
The rear camera on the iPhone 6 remains at eight megapixels, but has a new sensor that improves focus and face detection. In my tests, photos were sharper, and brighter especially in low light than on the 5s. The front camera is also better, with a larger aperture and better sensor.

Two modes
Both of the new models come with a feature that allows you to switch the entire display between “Standard” mode and “Zoom” mode. In the former, the bigger screens are used to display more content. In the latter, you get larger text and images.

Keyboard
The keyboard is vastly improved. It now quickly predicts what your next word might be, and makes fewer errors. You can also substitute third-party keyboards. Both of these are catch-up features Android phones already have them but they are very welcome. In my tests, typing improved dramatically.

Oops
Late in my testing, I dropped the iPhone 6 Apple had lent me for this review. It fell flat on its screen from about five feet onto a concrete driveway when I got distracted while taking a photo. This was entirely my fault. But the entire screen was full of cracks. The phone continued to work perfectly, but Apple sent me another to complete my tests. Problems
I had only two problems with the iPhone 6 during my week of testing. First, its width and smooth back can make it feel a bit slippery in your palm until you get used to it (this was not the cause of my dropping incident, as I was holding it with two hands, but the moral above still applies.)

Second, I had trouble at first getting the iPhone 6 to work reliably with my car’s built-in Bluetooth. Apple gave me a solution, which involved removing old, unused devices from my far-larger-than-normal list of devices connected to iCloud. (The company said this had something to do with proper Bluetooth pairing on my particular car model.) But Bluetooth calling in the car worked fine after that. Apple says most customers aren’t likely to have this issue, but it is promising a bug fix soon.

Bottom line
The iPhone 6 is a great upgrade for current iPhone owners, or for anyone, really. It manages to provide a much larger display in a phone that’s still small enough to handle easily. It’s my recommendation for the best smartphone you can buy.

But while the iPhone 6 has answered a lot of the problems I've had with previous iterations of Apple's handsets, there are still some issues that still swirled when I handled the phone for the first time.

Why has Apple decided to not join the masses with a really high-res screen? Why is the iPhone still the most expensive on the market? Has it done enough to improve the quite dire battery life of previous models, especially at a time when many high-end Android phones are easily chugging through a day's hard use without thirsting for a charger's caress?

Let's take a quick look at the price - and it's not pretty.

In Australia, the iPhone 6 outright pricing starts at AU$869 for 16GB, then jumps to $999 for 64GB and $1,129 for the 128GB version. If you prefer to pay off your phone over time, Optus is offering the 16GB for $0 on a $100 monthly contract over 24 months, Telstra has the same model for $0 on a $95 monthly plan and Vodafone will give you the 16GB iPhone 6 if you sign up for 24 months on an $80 a month plan.

The other big design change is to the power button, which has now been moved to the right-hand side of the phone. This makes a lot of sense, and given the phone is now a larger device at 138.1 x 67 x 6.9 mm hitting the top of the handset is a much harder task, so moving the button is the right thing to do.

Like the rest of the exterior buttons, the power key is raised and easy to hit in both left and right hand modes. It's metallic and crucially doesn't have the same rattle that I criticised on the iPhone 5S.

However, that doesn't mean the metallic keys don't have a little wiggle to them. Running your hand up and down the sides idly will result in you noticing a very slight looseness to the power and volume buttons... I'm in danger of being too critical here, but for the price it's not the sort of thing I expect to see.

The other important design change here is the camera now protrudes slightly on the rear of the phone. It's good to see that happening, as it shows that Apple isn't willing to compromise on camera quality in order to just whack in a thinner phone.

The protrusion is a little worrying in that laying the Apple iPhone 6 down flat on a table could see scratches appearing, but the sapphire glass that covers the lens should see that's pretty safe.

The rest of the iPhone 6 is very similar to the iPhone 5S, with the speakers at the bottom flanking the Lightning port. Well, I say speakers: it's just the one speaker, but thanks to the slightly elongated bottom of the phone you won't cover it when holding the phone in landscape.

This was irritating when trying to game or watch a movie without headphones on older iPhones - but this upgrade, combined with the lightness of the iPhone 6, mean you won't have a similar problem for the most part as the hands sit lower and free of the speaker generally.

Sadly the headphone port still resides at the bottom of the iPhone 6, meaning you'll still probably get your phone out of the pocket the wrong way around when listening to music.
