TSUNAMI

The term "tsunami" comes from the Japanese which means harbor ("tsu") and wave ("nami"). A tsunami is a series of waves generated when water in a lake or the sea is rapidly displaced on a massive scale.

A tsunami can be generated when the sea floor abruptly deforms and vertically displaces the overlying water. Such large vertical movements of the earth's crust can occur at plate boundaries.

Subduction of earthquakes is particularly effective in generating tsunamis, and occurs where denser oceanic plates slip under continental plates. As the displaced water mass moves under the influence of gravity to regain its equilibrium, it radiates across the ocean like ripples on a pond.

Tsunami always brings great damage. Most of the damage is caused by the huge mass of water behind the initial wave front, as the height of the sea keeps rising fast and floods powerfully into the coastal area.

A local councilor claims 147,000 hectares of the 166,000 hectares of mangrove forest in South Borneo were destroyed.

Crossing activity in Muara Angket Port is stopped because of high wave, Penjaringan, Jakarta, Thursday (26/1/2012)

The activities have been stopping since Wednesday (25/1/2012). The situation looks empty and only some boat's crews are sitting around in the port. The ticket selling of the crossing is opened but nobody serves the selling.

Yet Another Western!

Twenty-four of the thirty - two new films shown in the Colony this year have been western. The film now showing at the Paramount, ‘Kill for A Dollar’, is the twenty-fifth western to show. It is not very much different, no better and only a little inferior to the other twenty-four.

The story is the usual one. A bad man comes to a small town. He shoots the sheriff and a number of

other innocent people and rides away. At first no one in the town is brave enough to ride after him, but at last the editor of the local newspaper puts on his gun, borrows a horse and ride after him into the desert.

In the numerous scenes that follow there are a number of gun battles, during which forty-eight men are shoot, fifteen horses fall down and the main street of the town is burnt to the ground.

The part of the bad man, who wears black clothes is played by Pistol Smith. Mark Limp, as the brave editor, wears brown clothes and white hat. The clothes act rather better than the people wearing them.

Perhaps one day the local audiences will grow weary if seeing the same film every week. Perhaps they will refuse to pay money o see badly acted, badly directed, and badly written films of people killing one another for no good reason. Unfortunately, there is no sign that this time has come. Next week, at the Odeon, the twenty-sixth western will be shown. It is called ‘A Dollar to Kill’.

The education system where I have been a student for the last 16 years is a system that places high value on individual achievement and little value on group achievement. Having been a rather successful student in this educational system for the better part of my life, I am well aware of the advantages of working individually on projects. However, I can only imagine the advantages of working on projects in groups.

The first point I would like to make is that there are strong advantages to working in groups. One benefit of this method of getting things done is that the members of the group can learn from each other. Something else that is good is that the work can be divided among the members of the group. If, for example, four people have to work in a group to get a 20 –page paper done for history class, the paper can get done quickly. The reason for this is that different members of the group know different things and each group member has to write 5 pages.

Though there are strong advantages to working in groups, there are some even more compelling advantages for me to work by myself. I have had a lot of success working alone, and this is because I enjoy working by myself, working when I want, and getting things done the way that I want. Thus, if I had to write 20 page history paper, I would rather do it myself, even though I would have to write all 20 pages, because I could do it the way that I want.

If you’ve had a bad night’s sleep, don’t stay in bed later the next morning.
Don’t go to bed earlier the next night. Stick to your usual bedtime and rising pattern
Don’t nap during the day. Naps cut down on night sleep-time
Never lie awake in bed for more than 30minutes. By lying in bed sleepless you form an association between your bed and sleeplessness, thus reinforcing your poor sleeping pattern.
When you get out of bed after half an hour of sleeplessness, do something, but make sure it’s something dull. Read a book that doesn’t interest you so much. Never watch TV or listen to the radio.
Try sitting still in a chair in a darkened room: you’ll be surprised how fast you’ll get sleepy.
Get as much exercise as possible preferably early in the day. Exercise is a great sleep inducer

As for food intake to help you sleep, make sure that your daily diet is a balanced one and high in tryptophan , an amino acid found in certain foods. The body converts tryptophan to L- tryptophan and then to serotonin, a body chemical crucial to the sleep process. Foods rich in trytophan are: whole or skim milk, eggs, cheese, meat, cashews and peanuts, apples, bananas, cherries, figs, dried prunes and watermelon. if you include food high in tryptophan in your daily diet and incorporated some of the sleep-inducing activities into your life the chance are good that you will achieve a pattern of restful, soothing sleep.

Digestion is the process by which food is digested into smaller particles or molecules, for use in the human body.

Last year, three friends of mine, Don, Bob and Greg, decided to spend a holiday in the mountains. They planned to stay at our friend’s cabin, Ricky, which stood on the crest of a hill. Ricky did not go with them but Charley would help them during their stay in the cabin.

They set off along the winding road that led to the mountains. They had a map with them and according to this, the village they were going to stay in was only about fifteen miles away.

One of the world's most endangered turtles has been released into a Cambodian river with a satellite transmitter attached to its shell to track how it will navigate through commercial fishing grounds and other man-made hazards.

The 75-pound (34-kilogram) southern river terrapin - one of only about 200 adults remaining in the wild - waddled into the Sre Ambel river in southwestern Cambodia this past week to the heers of local residents and conservationists.

The New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society said the female terrapin was given to the group last year instead of being sold to traffickers who have decimated the country's population of turtles and other species to cater to demand for exotic wildlife in China.

The southern river terrapin, once considered the sole property of Cambodia's kings, only survives in the wilds of Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia, the group said in a statement. The population in the Sre Ambel river is estimated at less than 10 nesting females.

But it said the terrapins there have an excellent chance of recovery because coastal mangrove forests in the region are among the largest and most pristine in Southeast Asia, spanning some 175 square miles (45,000 hectares).

The first-ever satellite monitoring of the species hopes to determine how the turtle will fare among fisherman as well as in areas threatened by sand mining and conversion of mangrove forests into shrimp farms.
A small population of the species was found in 2000 in Sre Ambel after being considered locally extinct for many years.

Following the brutal rule of the Khmer Rouge in the mid-1970s which left the country devastated, poor rural dwellers scoured the forests for wildlife, much of which was sold to traders connected to China, where many wild animals - from turtles to tigers - are believed to possess medicinal and sex-enhancing properties.
The turtle project is being run by the Wildlife Conservation Society in cooperation with the Cambodian government and Wildlife Reserves Singapore, a zoological enterprise.

West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan led 10,000 musicians performing "Tanah Airku" national anthem on angklung bamboo instruments at the West Java Angklung Colossal event at the Sentul International Convention Center (SICC) in Bogor on Wednesday.

Cross-country skiers and snowshoers don't need expensive resorts to indulge their passion. One of the best places to hit the trail is on a national wildlife refuge. "A lot of them are off the beaten track and they wouldn't be places people would think about visiting outside the local community," says Nathan Caldwell , the national trails coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which oversees the National Wildlife Refuge System. He shares some favorite sites with Larry Bleiberg for USA TODAY. Snow conditions vary by season, so check before going.

Seney National Wildlife Refuge

Michigan

More than nine miles of groomed trails wind through hardwood forests of sugar maple, beech and yellow birch in this Upper Peninsula park. The routes, rated easy to most difficult, are forgiving. Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge

New York

Skiers at this Upstate New York park between Rochester and Buffalo can see otters and bald eagles while exploring a 7.5 mile designated Nordic trail, or a 2.5 mile hiking trail. Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge

Wisconsin

The bluffs of the Mississippi River make great terrain for snow lovers. The refuge offers free snowshoes on site, and also provides ski and snowshoe tours on select days throughout the season. Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge

West Virginia

You'll find 31 miles of ungroomed trails, plus another 10 miles of groomed routes maintained by the privately owned White Grass Ski Touring Center. The facility has a restaurant, ski rentals and instruction, and offers the opportunity to try demanding terrain in a former downhill ski area. Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge

Maine

You won't find many tourists at this park near Kennebunkport, but you may encounter moose, mallards and Canada geese. The refuge offers about five miles of ungroomed trails. Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge

North Dakota

North Dakota has more refuges than any other state, and this one, with its sweeping prairie views is one of the prettiest. Hard-core skiers will head out in the dead of winter, but Caldwell says March and April are ideal with longer days and higher temperatures. The park, near Minot, has about nine miles of ungroomed trails. "Not too many people are out touring that part of the country. Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge

Idaho

Magnificent tundra swans winter at this refuge near the Canadian border. "They are really impressive, with long necks and a really interesting call," Caldwell says. Skiers can choose from two mostly flat ungroomed refuge trails. There's also an auto-tour route.208-267-3888; fws.gov/kootenai/

Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge

Washington

With roads closed to all vehicles (including snowmobiles) through mid-April, skiers have the run of this rolling park about an hour from Spokane. "It's mostly upland and wooded. You're going to have an experience very much like skiing in a forest," Caldwell says. Kenai National Wildlife Refuge

Alaska

Six ungroomed trails cut through boreal forest and across frozen wetlands. About three hours from Anchorage on a major highway, the park offers a wilderness experience with the possibility of seeing moose, lynx, coyotes and bald eagles. Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge

Skiers can take light rail from downtown Minneapolis to this urban refuge located just a few miles from the Mall of America. The ungroomed routes, which cross frozen flood plain inaccessible during warmer months, link up with state and regional paths, creating a trail network of about 100 miles.
