Barca had to wait until the second half though in order to kill the game off, with Messi getting his second of the night on 55 minutes. Sergio Busquets freed the World Footballer of the Year on the right from where he fired past Ajax keeper Kenneth Vermeer. Gerard Pique made sure the points were Barcelona s when he made it 3-0 on 69 minutes, the Spanish international heading in after a pinpoint first-time cross from Brazilian Neymar.

The Federal Government, Thursday, reassured Nigerians, particularly people of the Niger Delta, that the N347 billion East West highway dualisation projects would be completed and deliver by December 2014. Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Peter Orubebe, who stated this while featuring at the 2013 ministerial press briefing to showcase the achievements of his ministry under the mid-term report, disclosed that some sections of the road had been completed and were due for handing over by the contractors. He added that the 338 kilometres dual carriageway was very strategic and would be completed at the stipulated time. Orubebe, who said the government was committed to the development of the Niger Delta, sought the cooperation, support and collaboration of stakeholders in the region to nip in the bud pockets of threats and kidnapping of expatriates and excessive demands by communities from contractors which often result in work stoppage. Orubebe explained that because of the importance of the road to the people, some other on-going projects had been sacrificed to ensure the completion date was realised. *The East-West Road ... not constructed without design, due process and financial plan. *The East-West Road not constructed without design, due process and financial plan. The minister, who noted that the ministry had spent over N200 billion on executions of various development projects in the last three years, spreading across the nine states that made up the Niger Delta, noted, however, that N1 trillion was required to accelerate developments in the region. He said: The dualisation of the East-West road which commenced in 2006 and was taken over by the ministry at 10 percent completion in 2010, has now reached over 52 percent completion. Orubebe said, With the level of commitment by this administration, the road would be completed by December, 2014. Some sections ...

Governors May Forfeit Jonathan's Second Term

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Review of the Constitution, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has said if the committee s recommendation on single tenure succeeds, President Goodluck Jonathan will sacrifice his presidential ambition in 2015. Senator Ike, who is the Deputy Senate President, also said some governors would sacrifice their second term ambitions in 2015. He stated this in Abuja on Thursday while explaining the fate of the President and some governors on the proposed six-year single tenure amendment to the 1999 Constitution. The deputy senate President said, For us, it would have been easy to say let s put it six years and let whoever wants, including those who are available now, let them benefit, so long as it will help in keeping overheating the system away. But we don t want Nigerians to say that we have colluded with the executive to give tenure elongation to the President and certain governors. That means somebody instead of staying for eight years; he will now be staying for 10 years. I think it will be easier for someone to deal with the issue of making a sacrifice than for someone to have the period for 10 years; I am not sure what our colleagues will say. If they say that those who are there now should benefit, that is fine. Those who are currently serving should be able to excuse themselves and say we make this sacrifice on behalf of the system. Ekweremadu recalled that the President was one of the persons that called for a single tenure of six or seven years. The deputy senate president said, He (Jonathan) was grossly misunderstood. They were saying he wanted to get a third term; he wanted to elongate his tenure and all kinds of things were said. He also said his ...

Bolt, 26, was fastest out of the blocks at the Diamond League meeting but American Gatlin, 31, powered past the Jamaican to win in 9.94 seconds. I need two months to get ready so I am not worried, Bolt told BBC Sport. Phillips Idowu, in his first major meet since his early exit from the London 2012 Olympics, finished seventh in the triple jump in a season best of 16.44m. The 34-year-old Briton produced the leap in the first round but failed his next two jumps and then passed on his final three jumps to bow out of the competition, which was won by America s Olympic and world champion Christian Taylor, 22, with 17.08m. Gatlin, however, looked in fine form as he maintained his unbeaten start to the season over 100m. The 2004 Olympic champion, who went on to serve a four-year doping ban, recorded his third Diamond League success after victories in Doha and Eugene by the narrowest of margins. Bolt had suffered a hamstring injury last month which hampered him in his opening race of the season in the Cayman Islands, where he could only manage a time of 10.09 seconds. And although the six-time Olympic gold medallist, who was making his first appearance in the Diamond League this season, jumped well out of the blocks, he was blowing hard by halfway as Gatlin began to impose himself on the race. However, the American had to dip his head on the line to beat the world record holder, with France s Jimmy Vicaut third in 10.02 seconds. It was Bolt s first major international loss since his false-start disqualification at the 2011 World Championships in South Korea. Bolt came second to Yohan Blake in the 100m and 200m at the Jamaican Olympic trials last July but ...

Senate President David Mark yesterday berated political leaders for overheating the polity and distracting the onerous task of governance. The Senate President fell short of calling names but recent events in his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have polarised the Nigerian Governors Forum, setting the Presidency and the PDP leadership against some governors. Mark who blew hot during a special plenary session to mark two years of the seventh senate, described the ongoing political crisis as a display of unpatriotic attitude at a time with so much work yet to be done . He observed that creeping personal ambition of political leaders is threatening the provision of good governance two years ahead of elections. Now, it is time to speak out once again. Elections are two clear years away. Yet the collision of vaulting personal ambitions is over-heating the polity and distracting the onerous task of governance, the Senate President said. With so much work yet to be done, we as elected officials, should focus on governance and justify our present mandates, he added. For several months, the PDP has been enmeshed in crisis with the presidency and the party s hierarchy in open confrontation with some top party leaders, particularly state governors. The election of the chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum in which PDP s candidate Governor Jonah Jang was reportedly defeated was symptomatic of the deepening crisis within the party just two years to elections. The fallout of the election also culminated in the suspension of Governor Rotimi Amaechi and his Sokoto State counterpart Aliyu Wamakko from the PDP, and the pulling out of the Bauchi State governor, Malam Isa Yuguda from the Northern Governors Forum. Senate President Mark berated the architects of the crisis in the polity saying it was unnecessary, diversionary, divisive, destructive, ...

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested three men in connection with drug trafficking. The three suspects were apprehended at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA) Lagos for ingesting 161 wraps of narcotics weighing 3.085kg. Two of the suspects were importing the drugs into the country while one was caught attempting to export the drugs to London. One of the suspects alleged that drug barons were after his life for excreting the drugs he ingested at the airport toilet in Doha. NDLEA Airport Commander Hamza Umar, who confirmed the arrests, gave the names of the suspects as Elioku Simeon Chibuzor, 28; Ogbu Obioma Leonard, 37 and Uzobude Vitus Uju, 43 years. Narrating how he was arrested, the 28 year old Elioku Simon Chibuzor, who is an auto parts dealer, said he ingested 80 wraps of drugs but he excreted the drugs in Doha. He was arrested during the inward screening of passengers on Qatar airline flight. They promised to pay me 2,000 dollars to smuggle the drugs from Brazil to Doha. When I got to Doha, the person who ought to collect the drug from me failed to show up. It was for fear of being caught that made me to dispose the drugs at the airport toilet. I never knew that six wraps were left in my stomach. Now, I have been arrested and the owners of the drugs are after my life, he said. Elioku hails from Anambra State.

Shell Petroleum Development Company, has expressed concern over the activities of crude oil thieves and illegal refineries operators in the Niger Delta, saying that the country was losing $1.6bn annually to oil theft. The company cited its forced shut down of the Nembe Creek Trunklines, NCTL, in Bayelsa State, a facility which produces about 150,000 barrels of crude oil per day and its declaration of force majeure on Bonny Light export. This, according to the company, was to enable it remove crude oil theft connections, investigate suspected oil theft leaks and effect repairs. Speaking at a workshop organised for media practitioners in Yenagoa, Shell Manager, Government/Community Relations, Evans Krukrubo, said over 90 per cent of its pipelines in the region had been ruptured by suspected oil thieves. He noted that the shut down of NCTL production would impact negatively on Bayelsa s share from the Federation Account. Represented by Funkakpo Fufyin, the company said the recent upsurge in illegal refining business in the Niger Delta should be a major concern to all stakeholders. He said: We are not worried by the money lost by Shell, but the harm and destruction unleashed on the environment. He blamed most of the spills in the region on crude oil thieves and illegal refinery operators, when compared to operational failures. He cited Bodo, in Rivers State, Imo River, NCTL and offshore of the Niger Delta as areas identified as major hotspots for oil bunkering and sabotage. Krukrubo called on security agencies and state government to assist the firm in curbing the activities of oil thieves and illegal refinery operators.

The highest reward of up to $7 million is offered for the leader of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, while $5 million each was offered for alleged Al-Qaeda veteran Mokhtar Belmokhtar and Yahya Abou Al-Hammam, said to be a top figure in Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, US officials said. Jonathan, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, last night described the move by the American government as a welcome development.
Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has described the re-election of Rivers State Governor, Mr Rotimi Amaechi as Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) as victory for democracy, adding that the decision of the Forum to opt for election instead of consensus was as a result of democratic growth. Governor Fayemi who spoke with journalists at his Ishan-Ekiti country home at the weekend, however urged Nigerians to see the emergence of Amaechi as NGF s Chairman as strictly a demonstration of his colleagues confidence in his leadership of the Forum and not a victory over the Presidency. Fayemi said: It is a contest among governors for the chairmanship position and it would be wrong for anyone to consider it a contest between President Goodluck Jonathan and Amaechi as the President was not a contestant. So let no one think it is a defeat to the president. It was a race between Governors Jang and Amaechi , Fayemi asserted. The Governor recalled that the leadership of the Forum since 1999 was based on consensus but took a different direction because of the growth of democracy.
