Rey, King of the Galgos - needs your help

112carlotagalgos is a very small family association which concentrates on rescuing and rehabilitating traumatised, sick and injured galgos and podencos. Some months ago we told the story of Rey, abandoned, surviving on virtually nothing, he'd finally collapsed and almost given up the struggle. Some months on, he is doing ok, but a new problem has arisen. Rey needs help! He needs you, we need you! Here's his story...

Rey came to 112 Carlota Galgos several months ago, found giving up, life had let him down. He lay in the dust with life draining from him,.. down and out. He was seen and rescued. He stayed with his rescuer in Sevilla for a month and along with Polyana joined us at 112 carlota galgos for us to recouperate them and socialise them into family life.

Rey .. seems he has everything against him, he is a black galgo in Spain, he is older and he is a natural hunter. He cannot be scolded for something which has been bred into him, he lived and kept himself alive by hunting. He is a hunter, he will hunt, and yet he will walk by your side like the gentlest galgo you know.

Rey arrived with habits which had kept him alive, pooping and then turning around and eating it. Searching out others who had pooped, and doing the same. This took time to change. He also came to us with a fractured front leg, ankle. This had soldered itself, and didnt appear to bother him. Rey has learnt there is food twice a day, he has gained weight and gleams. He is affectionate and giving, he wants to be by your side and be loved. He has to be walked in a galgo muzzle due to his instinct, and this has to be adhered do.

Now things have changed for Rey!

Over the last few weeks Reys ankle has begun to bother him. on becoming worse he saw Paco the vet today. Sadly there is no remedy for this particular fracture, however the remedy will be to relieve the pain Rey is in.

He is on analagesics until Wednesday next week. The choices are that the bone will be fused together, or plated. Either way his leg will be left rigid and will not bend but the pain will go and this is priority. Its a degenerative issue in that its an old break, fused itself .. and now we have to honour Rey by helping him.

This surgery is expensive. The quote is Aprox.800 euros!! Rey needs to have this operation, and he is booked in to receive it.

Rey needs help, if you can help Rey in anyway I would be most grateful. This is a massive amount of money to raise for 112carlota galgos. Please help Rey. We can't achieve all we do without you. Without your help it puts mass pressure on us for other surgeries, other rescues needed.

Saturday, May 19, 2012. Today was a very sad day. I went to the settlement to take pictures since before I left and I took them and spread when they were in residence, now a thing impossible to do, since I have no means. What I ask is help for them: benefit for partnerships that take them and seek their family, adoption, sponsors to get them out and bring to a kennels, distribution to refuges, etc…

Please do not tell me that denounce and to help them more, I complained, nothing happened and leave them to their fate ...I CAN NOT!!! They are in the hut of a man who has committed them to find a solution. Too much to do with taking other “galgueros” dogs loose to fend for themselves or wrest from the hands of the animals that make them ... you know.

I am particular, I go to many ads in Seville, but what happens on this site there is no one stopping it. Please let's help them, that place is hell, no living thing deserves to be there, and the hut of the man is not equipped, are crowded. Do not spend this long post. Thank you. Inma.

Dogs out, dogs in - busy time at Association 112carlotagalgos

It's a busy time at the moment at 112carlotagalgos in Malaga. Two of their rescued and rehabilitated galgos Bruno and Halo have now headed off to Belgium and forever homes, Polyana and Gandalf are settling into their new homes in the UK, and podenca Angela Angelica heads off to the USA tomorrow (28th May) and her forever family. But 3-legged beauty Ana is still waiting - surely there is a place in someone's heart for this stunning podenca.

Greyhounds/Galgos Help in the World - Facebook page

I know many of you don't like Facebook and don't have Facebook pages. I don't use it, apart from my Save the Galgo and Help the Podencos pages - anything to publicise their plight. There is now a new Facebook page to help the galgos, which is doing marvellous publicity. However, there are just so many posts that I'm afraid I simply don't have the time to bring them all to you. Macu lives in Seville and works tirelessly to rescue galgos and podencos from a gypsy settlement. Here are the latest ones, for which she needs help, both financial and adoptions. She says that soon life in the settlement for the dogs will be hell, as temperatures in the summer heat will reach 50 degrees and those dogs kept inside buildings will surely die. This galgo puppy was left at the settlement. Macu has saved her and has her in a kennels for the time being.

Hi everybody, this Sunday I went to the settlement and rescued some lost souls and my heart full of happiness because some people helped me to make it possible.

Photogaphs 1, 2: two females that are now with Betriz of Argos looking for forever homes. They need financial help too.

One pregnant mixed and a couple more female galgos, 8 and 3 years old and ill. Galgos 112 took care from them and Esther, its president, will pay from her own pocket for the castration of the mixed female.

I wanted to inform you all and ask you to follow helping me to help them. I need places to keep them. Keep spreading their situation and their needs because when I have some help I go and take them out of the gypsy settlement.

Mass Grave with Greyhounds found in Ireland

Over Easter weekend April 8 to 9, 2012 a hiker found 40 km south-east of Limerick, Ireland, an open mass grave with 7-8 greyhounds from the racetrack come.

An initial investigation by "Limerick Animal Welfare" shows that some cadavers were in a serious state of decomposition and there were also certainly two greyhounds dumped in it recently. It is suspected that there will be more skeletons, but the overgrown site needs clearing to allow further investigation.

Marion Fitzgibbon speaker of "The Greyhound Rescue Association of Ireland (GRAI)" who visited the site recently said that two greyhounds were slain by a blow on the head.
We know that these greyhounds "Racers" are because they have tattoos in their ears perfectly legible.

GRAI the "Irish Greyhound Board", and "the Bord na gCon" have been called on to investigate the matter and find out why these dogs were slain.

The slaughter and dump in a public place certainly puts the Irish Greyhound Racing Industry in a bad light.

GRAI believe that this is only the tip of the iceberg because data from last year shows that there were an estimated 3,271 bitches bred from, with every 7 pups per litter.

Only 22,904 dogs were registered at the age of 12 months as a racer.

Considering that every year greyhounds stop running due to age or due to injury, we can assume that each year between 8,000 and 10,000 greyhounds disappear.

These dogs did not have to die says Marion Fitzgibbon. They are great pets and can have a long and happy life.

This illustrates that Irish greyhound breeders and trainers are as unsympathetic to the welfare of their dogs as the Spanish galgueros.

Although GN is for the galgos, I couldn't refuse this appeal.

In brief, the lady who started this rescue shelter in Romania has died and there is notice to quit the land in June 2012. There is obviously a very cruel attitude to stray dogs in Romaina - they are picked up in appalling condition and shut in without food and water in the pound and just left to die. There is a chance to buy land and the person who is trying to raise the money to keep the shelter open - Carla McBride in Manchester - has been involved for 5 years.

Dogs taken to the shelter are neutered and vaccinated and homed where possible - education of children is also a part of their policy. Please can you also forward to as many people as possible - I believe the amount left to raise is £4,000.

Galgos del Sol urgently need help getting another 17 galgos and podencos out of the Mazarron gypsy camp.They have nowhere to put them and need help from other associations and foster homes.They will pay for rabies shots and transport to associations. The guardia have again visited the owner and said he is not allowed to own any dogs again. They need to get them out quickly. Contact GdS

Galgo Calendar Competition - deadline 31st May 2012 - hurry!

The Blue Greyhound is putting together a fantastic calendar for 2013 to raise funds for Pepis Dog Refuge based in Pedrera, near Seville in Spain. We would love you to submit your pictures of your galgos for the calendar. There needs to be a good selection of galgos sleeping (should be easy!), playing, having fun on holidays, fun in the snow and Christmas pictures. Each picture you submit for the competition costs £1. These pictures need to be in high resolution please.

All pictures to be sent to info@bluegreyhound.org.uk with payment through Paypal using this address – please remember to send payment as a donation then we will not have to pay Paypal fees on this.

We need to have all pictures in by 31st May. Those pictures chosen for the calendar will be notified by email by 10th June – the 12 winning galgos will get a bag of doggy treats, and our Calendar Galgo Cover Star will get a super mini hamper containing treats and a toy from The Blue Greyhound.

The calendar is professionally printed with gorgeous large A4 size pictures, so please support Pepis Dog Refuge and submit those photos of your gorgeous galgos!
