I hope this email finds you well. After a lot of behind the scenes planning, we are delighted to finally be able to announce the details of the Esker Festival Choir 2026! This will be our most ambitious festival to date not only in number but also in the scope of performances and we hope you might be interested in joining us!

The 2026 edition of the Esker Festival Choir will take place between August 1st and 23rd and the theme of this year's Festival is Rustic Delights and Dangers. We are particularly excited to be performing an Opera for the first time, the incredible work Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, featuring The Esker Festival Orchestra and Choir as well as a cast of International and Irish Soloists with two performances in Galway and Dublin on August 22nd and 23rd respectively.

This year we are delighted to perform again with the choir and both Galway and Dublin. As such it is possible to sing in one or both performances and to attend rehearsals in either Galway or Dublin. Attendance at all relevant rehearsals is required and of course encourage you to perform in both concerts! The preliminary rehearsal schedule is as follows:

Due to the large amount of rehearsals and different locations required for this year's project there will be a cost of €100 required to participate. This will go towards extra accompaniment costs, room hire and towards subsiding the orchestra musicians and soloists who will be performing.

The deadline for applications is June 1st 2026. Once again we are accepting new applications for all positions in the choir. If you are interested in becoming a member of the choir for this special project you can apply by filling out this online Form.

Three musical ensembles from Galway are joining forces for a one-of-a-kind concert this month – and you’re invited! Taking place at 8pm on Saturday, 24 May, in the Augustinian Church, Middle Street, the event promises an uplifting night of choral, brass, and community music, in support of the Galway Simon Community.

Hosted by the Galway Choral Association, with support from major sponsor DAVY, the concert will also feature the Frenchville Brass Ensemble and the Galway Simon Community Music Project, showcasing the incredible musical diversity and spirit of collaboration that Galway is known for.

“We’re thrilled to present a Summer Concert featuring shorter choral works from the 20th century,” says Norman Duffy, Musical Director of Galway Choral Association. “These include Elgar’s Three Motets, Op. 2 and Tavener’s Funeral Ikos. We’re also proud to share the stage once again with the Galway Simon Community Music Project — it’s always inspiring to witness the joy that music brings to everyone involved.”

The programme offers something for everyone, from classical choral gems to brass ensemble favourites. “I’ve really loved working on the music this term,” says choir member Angelika Knoll. “We’re performing beautiful works by Elgar, Tavener, and Bruckner —which are very accessible, even if you’re new to choral singing. We welcome new members again at the for of the next season, which will start in September, I only joined last year myself and am enjoying it so much.”

This is more than just a concert — it’s a celebration of Galway’s rich musical community and a chance to support a vital local cause. Don’t miss this inspiring night of music and community.

Prepare to be entranced by the beauty of Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor, as Galway Choral Association (GCA) presents this timeless masterpiece in the stunning Galway Cathedral.

Directed by Norman Duffy and accompanied by the gifted Ramin Haghjoo, this performance will feature outstanding soloists: Aisling Kenny (Soprano), Charlotte O'Hare (Soprano), Conor Prendiville (Tenor), and William Gaunt (Bass).

“I’m thrilled to be directing this monumental piece,” says Norman. “Mozart's "Great" Mass in C minor is a truly epic work, one of his very finest. It will be a great privilege to lead Galway Choral Association, our four terrific soloists, accompanied by Ramin Haghjoo, in this performance, which follows our highly successful performance of Mozart's Requiem in 2023.”

Tony Roe, Chairperson of GCA, agrees: "Galway Cathedral offers the perfect setting for such a grand and powerful piece. Ramin Haghjoo’s expertise on the organ has elevated the music to new heights, making this a performance you won’t want to miss.”

This concert marks a significant change in approach to funding. In line with the current policy for Catholic Churches, and reflecting the Association’s commitment to making music accessible to all, entry is by donation. “This allows people from all walks of life to enjoy this incredible music,” says Roe. “We’re confident that the generosity of our audience and loyal followers will cover the costs of this ambitious production, which features professional soloists and musicians.”

Admission is by donation, with contributions accepted at the door and online via Eventbrite. Traditionally, tickets were €20-25, but this year, the choir welcomes donations of any amount to ensure that everyone can experience the performance.

Are you passionate about singing and looking for a rewarding challenge? As a vibrant, mixed-voice community choir, we have openings for men and women eager to explore the rich tapestry of classical choral music.

Led by musical director, Norman Duffy, supported by accompanist, Dympna O'Byrne, we are preparing for an exciting performance of Mozart's Mass in C minor, K. 427 in early 2025. This monumental work offers an extraordinary opportunity for singers at all levels to develop their skills and perform in a large-scale choral production. A masterpiece of the choral repertoire, set for four soloists, choir, and orchestra, it’s an adaptable and timeless piece beloved by singers and audiences alike.

We welcome inquiries from former members, those returning to choir singing, and newcomers alike. Singing in a group is not only fulfilling but also greatly beneficial for mental and physical well-being. While prior choral experience and ability to read music are helpful, they are not prerequisites. We offer learning tools to support all our members. Many new members haven’t sung in a choir for years, and we embrace all adult singers with open arms.”

A a well-established choir in the heart of Galway City, with deep ties to the community, we pride ourselves on our expertise in organizing concerts and our participation in community events, as well as our dedication to musical excellence.

The season begins on September 8, 2024. Rehearsals are on Sundays from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at St. Patrick’s Band Hall, between September and June. Galway Choral Association proudly presents Pax MUNDI, an enchanting evening of music dedicated to the theme of peace, in support of COPE Galway. This captivating event will take place on May 11th, 2024.

Under the expert direction of Dr Darina McCarthy, the choir will present a selection of serenely beautiful choral pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries, complemented by instrumental selections and accompaniment by award-winning Claddagh-native uilleann piper Michael Vignoles and acclaimed organist Raymond O'Donnell.

“This selection of choral works was chosen with an awareness of current conflicts and the unnecessary deaths of war, and presents a message of hope for peace in our troubled world.” says Darina McCarthy. And the wonderful acoustic of Galway cathedral will enable our instrumentalists to showcase their instruments individually and together.

Galway Choral Association is delighted to announce a wonderful concert to brighten the dark days of January: Gioachino Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle , for soloists and choir, with the unusual accompaniment of two pianos plus reed organ.

Musical director Dr Darina McCarthy says: "Rossini was Italy's most influential opera composer during the first half of the nineteenth century. The [ital] Petite Messe [close ital] dates from a second flowering of creativity late in his life, and combines all the excitement of operatic tradition with the solemnity of Mass texts. The result is an uplifting and exhilarating feast of music, which is neither 'petite' nor 'solennelle'!"

"We are thrilled to have glorious soloists Rachel Croash, Anne Marie Gibbons, Eoin Hynes, and Jeffrey Ledwidge joining the choir for this performance", says Tony Roe, Chairperson of Galway Choral Association. "Well-known local musicians Ronan de Burca, Dympna O'Byrne, and Raymond O'Donnell are our instrumentalists."

Vivaldi GLORIA: our summer concert, June 2023

Our summer concert for June 2023 brings together three of Galway choirs, to raise funds for Claddagh Watch, to support their work creating a safer environment around Galway city’s waterways.

The evening will include performances by Ignite Gospel choir, Galway’s premier male voice a cappella group, the Galway Baytones and string trio Sophia Mantu, Ciara Mantu and Fiona McKree, fresh from their award-winning performances at the Feis Ceoil. The anchor work is our performance of the Vivaldi Gloria in D major RV589.

Our summer concert traditionally brings together a diverse range of choirs, and we also aim to give a platform to emerging performers, and to showcase the breadth of singing opportunities in Galway.

The Vivaldi GLORIA is a multi-movement setting of 'Gloria in excelsis Deo' with beloved sections which express the joy of music, and others which are deeper and more challenging for singers, but still appealing to a wide audience. We will be accompanied by organist Peter Barley.”

The concert is at 8pm on Saturday 10 in the Augustinian Church in Middle St. Tickets are €20 and must be purchased in advance from choir members, Eventbrite, or from Opus II music shop in High Street.

One of Mozart's finest and most original works, the Requiem (1791) is being presented by Galway Choral Association this week. Accompanied by orchestra, the concert features soloists Catherine Redding, Sarah Luttrell, Andrew Gavin Jeffrey Ledwidge, under the baton of musical director Norman Duffy.

“Performing the Requiem is a great honour” says Norman Duffy. “The dramatic power of Mozart’s composition highlights the austere and ultimately redemptive language of the text of the requiem mass...” And we are extremely pleased to welcome four outstanding soloists to Galway, and to work with 25 fine orchestral musicians, some of whom are from Galway’s own string orchestra, Luminosa.

“We’re delighted to once again be performing for a Galway audience,” says Carol Duffy, Chairperson of Galway Choral Association. “The Requiem includes the magnificent Lacrimosa which was made famous by the movie Amadeus, and many other sections that are easily recognisable.”

“The evening marks the 25th anniversary of the choir’s foundation, celebrates our return to normality following the two years of silence during the recent pandemic, and remembers those who have passed during this time”, Carol said.

Sing Mozart's Requiem in 2023!

If you love singing and want a challenge, Galway Choral Association wants to hear from you! The Association is a mixed-voice community choir and has vacancies for men and women who want to sing fabulous music from the classical choral repertoire.

Entering its 25th year, the association is working towards a performance of Mozart's Requiem in early 2023.

The choir especially welcomes enquiries from former members and people who want to return to choral singing. “We welcome everyone! Singing with a group is great for health and well-being,” says chairperson Carol Duffy. “Choral experience and ability to read music are helpful, but not necessary, as we provide comprehensive learning-tools. New members often include people who last sang with a choir years ago, but we welcome all adult singers.”

“As an established choir, we have a structure and relationship in the community”, Carol said. “We have expertise in organising major concerts, and we receive invitations to take part in choral and community events. Our Choral Director, Norman Duffy, and accompanist, Dympna O'Byrne, are accomplished musicians, whose high standards enable us to perform challenging choral works, while raising funds for local charities.”

“I’m delighted to be doing the Mozart Requiem” said Norman Duffy. “It is the perfect tribute to the loved ones we lost during the Covid pandemic. And as we hopefully leave the difficult times behind us, Mozart’s wonderful music offers an optimism that will inspire us for the future.”

The new season starts on 4 September 2022. The choir rehearses on Sunday from 7.30 - 9.30 pm in St. Patrick’s Band Hall, from September to June. New members are accepted in September and February. Prospective members may attend three rehearsals, to see if it’s the right choir for them.

We had a fabulous evening, with a full-house audience. Many thanks to the choirs who took part, Cór na dTreabh, BRAVO Belles Galway Simon Community Music Project and the Galway Baytones. Springing into Song for the Red Cross - May 20022

A unique concert later this month will bring together five Galway choirs to raise funds for the Red Cross’ Ukraine relief work.

Spearheaded by Galway Choral Association, the event will include performances by the Galway Simon Community Music Project, Loughrea-based three-part women’s choir Bravo Belles, the city’s first mental wellness community support choir, Cór na dTreabh, and Galway’s premier male voice a cappella group, the Galway Baytones.

“We are delighted to bring together such a diverse range of choirs” says Carol Duffy, Chairperson of Galway Choral Association. “We worked with Galway Simon Music Project in our last community-focussed concert in 2019, and it’s a fantastic to see community members experience the joy of coming together to make music. And we’re delighted to showcase the range of choral music opportunities available in Galway – a city which really does have a choir for every level of music experience.”

“Our last concert was a performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass in March 2020, days before the choral world closed down” says director Norman Duffy. “While we tried working on-line, nothing replaces the experience of singing together as we to learn choral works. It has been challenging getting back in shape for public performances. While our long-term goal is a performance of Mozart’s Requiem in early 2023, in this concert, we will present a taster of the Requiem, along with lighter works by John Rutter, Thomas Morley and James E Moore.”

It’s time to sing together again!

“It’s time to sing together again”

This is the phrase inspiring Galway Choral Association as we plan to re-commence in-person rehearsals.

“It’s been incredibly difficult deciding when to start again”, says musical director Norman Duffy. “Our plan is to begin rehearsals on Sunday 13 February. We hope to host a light collaborative concert in May/June 2022. Our main goal is a performance of Mozart’s Requiem, with orchestra and soloists, in January 2023. We may have to adapt to public-health circumstances – but this is the type of music that we want to perform, and it is so important to look to the future positively.”

“To start with, we’re going to work on getting the choir into singing fitness”, says Norman. “This will include both individual breathing and vocal techniques, and also working to make a good choral sound. Our accompanist, Dympna O'Byrne will be a great help during this period, and as we start to work on more challenging pieces.”

“As a choir, we were incredibly lucky,” says Carol Duffy, Chairperson of Galway Choral Association. “Our last concert was a performance of Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis in early March 2020. The memory of that night and the fabulous music we were able to make together has sustained us through dark days and difficult attempts at being a virtual choir and rehearsing on-line.”

Our plans are, of course, subject to public health guidelines. We rehearse in St Patrick’s Bandhall and have been consulting with their committee about the protocols for using the hall, and using the screens and other features which have been added.

The following announcement was made in July 2021, when it appeared as thought in-person rehearsals may be possible. However the public health situation means we were not able to progress these plans, and the choir remained in recess until February 2022.

Our rehearsals were suspended in mid-March 2020, in light of the Corona-19 situation.

In mid 2021, the choir's Board of Directors met to discuss the guidelines and protocols that need to be put in place for a safe return to choir.

We are currently hoping to return to in-person rehearsals in September 2021, as our membership should have had the opportunity to be fully vaccinated by then. We will, of course, follow all public-health guidelines and also the protocols put in place by the Band Hall. So exact details are to be advised.

As we have not been singing for quite a while, the programme initially be an easier and more familiar repertoire to ease us back, with the hope of a performance (however that may be!) in the first half of 2022.

Joseph Haydn’s finest work, the Missa in Angustiis (“Nelson Mass”), is the main feature in our concert in early March 2020. Entitled Magnificent Music for a March Evening, the concert features soloists Catherine Redding, Sharon Carty, Galway native Eoin Hynes and Brendan Collins, with organist Ramin Haghjoo.

Under the baton of musical director Norman Duffy, we will present Mozart’s delightful Credo Mass (Mass in C major K. 257), as well as the pensive and powerful sound-world of the Nelson Mass.

“Performing the Missa in Angustiis has been a long-term goal of mine” says Norman Duffy. “Haydn wrote it a time of intense fear for the future of Austria. He was unaware that Lord Nelson’s army dealt Napoleon a stunning defeat in the Battle of the Nile, just as the Mass was being written. The first performances occurred as this news spread around the world, forever linking Nelson’s name to the work in the public mind.”

“We’re delighted to be performing these contrasting works for a Galway audience,” says Carol Duffy, Chairperson of Galway Choral Association. “Our soloists include some of Ireland’s finest singers and we are honoured to work with them. Eoin Hynes is very familiar to Galway audiences, while Catherine, Sharon and Brendan have extensive experience throughout Ireland and internationally.”

The evening also marks the beginning of a two-year collaboration with Davy as the main sponsor of the Galway Choral Association. Now in our 22nd year, we are working towards a performance of Haydn's Nelson Mass in early 2020, participation in a city-wide choral event later in the year, and Brahms's Requiem with orchestra in early 2021.

We welcome enquires from new singers, former members and people who want to return to choral singing. “We welcome everyone! Singing with a group is proven to be great for health and well-being,” says chairperson Carol Duffy. “Choral experience and ability to read music are helpful, but not necessary, as we provide comprehensive learning-tools. New members often include people who are taking up a new hobby when the kids leave home, but we welcome all adult singers”

“Joining an established choir has many benefits”, Carol Duffy said. “We have the expertise to organise major concerts, and we receive invitations to take part in choral events, like those being planned for 2020. Our Choral Director, Norman Duffy, and accompanist, Dympna O'Byrne, are both accomplished musicians. Their high standards enable us to perform challenging choral works, while raising funds for local charities.”

“I’m delighted to be doing the Nelson Mass” said Norman Duffy. “Also known as the Mass for Troubled Times, this is one of Haydn’s later works and is widely regarded as being among his finest compositions. Political and financial instability meant that the resources were limited, but still he created a stark and powerful sound which is challenging but very rewarding to sing.”

We rehease on Sunday from 7.30 - 9.30 pm in St. Patrick’s Band Hall, from September to June. New members are accepted in September and February. Prospective members may attend the first three rehearsals in September, to see if we are the right choir for them.

Our May 2019 concert will showcase the choir's lighter repertoire, and see us share the stage with the Galway Simon Music Project.

The concert is at 8pm on Saturday 25 May in the Augustinian Church in Middle St.

Tickets are €15 / €12 and are available from Eventbrite, Opus II in High St (091 500 300), choir members or at the door.
