Free Advertising Programme

GalwayTransport.info (Galway's public transport information site) has two advertising "slots" which are provided, free of charge, to small businesses and/or non-profit organisations.

Who is it suitable for?

This programme is suitable for organisations that want to communicate to one of these target audiences:

Local people, and tourists who are currently in Galway, who want information about public transport services, or quality-assured information about the location of local/community facilities.
People in Ireland (Galway and elsewhere) who are trying to find a specific community facility or a location within an industrial estate. Some of these people are not interested in public transport.
Potential tourist and/or immigrants, currently based overseas, who are researching the public transport and other services available in Galway: these are approx 10% of visitors to the site, and they tend to look at a lot of pages on the site (and so see the sidebar advertising many times).

In the three months to January 2010, the site received, on average, just over 500 visits per month, with visitors looking at 3.45 pages per visit. (Source: Google Analytics).

Public transport operators and large companies will not usually be accepted for participation in this programme - exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for companies providing new services or charitable activities. For commercial advertising, see our Information for Public Transport Providers page.

What do advertisers have to do?

To take part in this programme, potential advertisers firstly need to contact the editor, to discuss potential timing and advertisement content.

Once agreement is reached, they must:

Provide an image file which contains the advertisement to be shown.
Provide the name (URL) of a website to be loaded when someone clicks on the image (ideally) - or at least a larger image file that can hosted by GalwayTransport.info and which gives interest readers more detail.
Mention GalwayTransport.info at least once during the time that their advertisement is running. This could be in publicity materials, on a website, in a newsletter or verbally at an event.

This "mention" will not be audited - it is simply a goodwill gesture, in the spirit of this overall programme.

Advertisements typically run for one month, but this can be varied to suit particular circumstances.

The advertising image file:

The image file that is supplied must comply with the terms and conditions in all way.

It should be a standard, non-animated graphic format (.bmp, .gif, .png or .jpg - or other format as agreed).

When the image is displayed, it will be shrunk to approx 200 px wide. The preferred width:height ratio is 5:2, therefore an image that is 200px X 80px will be shown as-is, while larger ones will be shrunk accordngly

Before being put onto the GalwayTransport.info site, all image files will be tested in a load environment that is very similar to the main site. The load environment will be available on the internet (so advertisers can see what their image will look like), but will not be indexed by Google.

Why this programme?

GalwayTransport.info was founded on the basis of "giving forward": providing something that is useful, even though there is no immediate expectation of a reward that is commensurate with the effort put in to it. The paid advertising that the site has is expected to to pay for the web-hosting and publicity materials: it's not expected to be a viable businesses. The free-advertising programme is an extension of this.

Also, the site is currently made up mainly of text and maps, with some tables. There are few existing graphics. Receiving agreement to show an organisation's graphics provides some visual variety on the site.

Terms and Conditions:

Acceptance of any potential advertiser into the programme is solely at the discretion of GalwayTransport.info and its editor(s). We will not enter into any correspondence about why particular potential advertisers were or were not accepted.

No liability is accepted for any consequences of participating in the programme, or not participating in it. This includes, but is not limited to, business consequences (too many referrals, not enough, the wrong type) and website/technical consequences (unwanted visitors to your website, spam emails, lack of exposure due to website unavailability etc).

Either party may terminate the agreement to advertise any time during the advertising period, or the time leading up to it. No explanation about reasons for the termination is required, although one will be given where possible.

If the agreement is terminated by GalwayTransport.info, the advertiser will be told by email at the time when the advertisement is removed.

If the advertiser wishes to terminate the agreement, s/he should contact the editor by email, with the expectation that the advertisement will be removed from the site within 24 hours. (NB it may not be removed from some cached materials in search engines for some time after that.

Both the advertising materials supplied, and the underlying product, service, cause or organisation must comply with the terms and conditions of GalwayTransport.info's web-host and other advertising partners. Full versions of these can be found here (hosting service) and here (AdSense). In summary:

No adult material
No offensive / hateful material (violent or advocating racial intolerance)
Only use content (text and images) that you own the copyright to, or have permission to use.
Nothing that might confuse readers into thinking they are looking at AdSense advertisements.

Also, the advertising image supplied must not unduly encourage readers to click it.

Information supplied to GalwayTransport.info will be managed in accordance with the site's Privacy Policy. In general, we require a contact name, phone number and email address before considering a potential advertiser. Bus Services for Third Level Students

This page has information about bus services that are specifically for tertiary students, and staff of third-level educational facilities.

A number of Galway city bus services are mainly for university, IT (institute of technology) and other 3rd level students. However if they operate as public services, they are listed on the City Bus Details page.

Services which run from other counties/towns either daily, or at weekends only for students who travel weekly are listed on the Regional Bus Services page, since they are open to the general public. Many regional morning and evening services run to or from the GMIT or NUIG campuses during term-time.

Dunaras Student Village Shuttle:
Contracted service for resident students, between the village and NUIG, and sometimes the Cathedral - details.

Corrib Village Shuttle:
Bus Éireann run a shuttle bus Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings - details.

Dangan Carpark Shuttle:
NUIG are trialling a shuttle bus between the Dangan car-park and the main Newcastle campus (Orbsen Building terminus), from 11 Jan - 28 May 2010.

Mornings: A bus from leaving from every 10-15 minutes between 8:15 - 11:01am
Lunchtime: 1:05pm from the Orbsen Building, 1:55pm from the Dangan car park
Afternoon: A bus leaves the Orbsen Building every 10-15 minutes between 4:15pm and 7:05pm
Night: Three trips from the Orbsen Building to the Dangan car park: the first leaves at at 10:20pm.

Public Transport Directions:

Catch the 4w - Newcastle bus from Eyre Square.

The bus goes over the river, past the Cathedral (on the left) and then past the University (on the right).

Outside the hospital, the bus make a right-hand turn. There are still university building on the right for some time.

St Francis Nursing Home is on the right, after the last of the university buildings (ask the bus-driver to stop at the closest stop, it's difficult to describe otherwise).

Then main entrance to Corrib Village is at the next bus stop. (Note: there is another foot entrance inside the university campus as well).

The bus makes a sharp left-hand turn outside the Westwood Hotel: there is a bus stop immediately around the corner:

Galway Business Park is across the road again
The driveway entrance to Dangan House / Dangan Nurseries is a little way down Newcastle Rd (to the south of the business-park).
For the Regional Sports Centre, walk a little further up past the business-park, and take the next entrance on the right.
Bushypark Church is on the left, approximately 1 mile further up Newcastle / Dangan Rd.

The bus may wait a few minutes at this stop, as it is the terminus. It then continues down Thomas Hynes Rd. The 2nd bus stop is immediately outside St Joseph's Special School, and Galway Educate Together National School (GETNS) is behind it (access down the driveway at the right of St Joseph's).

Evenings and Sunday:
After 7pm, and on Sundays, the bus route number changes to 4x5W, and the route is combined with route 5w - Rahoon. However the Newcastle section is visited first, so there is no change to the directions given above.

Get off at the first bus stop after the bus has crossed the river.

The Cathedral (1 on the map) is on your left.
The lane down to Fisheries Field (3) is immediately across the road, right beside the NUIG driveway, and Earls Island (4) is at the top of this lane.
The Millennium Children's Playground (6) is past the Cathedral, over the Upper Canal bridge.
Arus de Brun / Diocesan Pastoral Centre (2), is back across the river: cross the bridge, turn right, and it is the second building on the left side of the road.

How to catch the bus in Galway

To catch a regional or national bus:

To catch a local bus in Galway City:

Go to the right bus stop (see for Main Bus Stops for central city stops), at the right time (see City Bus Details for route maps and timetable links)

HINT: it's a good idea to be at the bus-stop five minutes early, in case the bus-driver's watch is fast.
Get your fare out before the bus arrives (see Fares for details)
When you see the bus coming, you don't usually need to signal to the driver.

However it may be a good idea to do so if the bus-stop is used by several different buses or is not a popular one. To signal the driver, raise your arm in front of you. OR - if the bus that is coming is not the one you want, shake your head.
When the bus arrives, wait for any passengers who are getting off (Galway city buses only have one door)
Get on to the bus and either give your fare to the bus driver and wait for him/her to give you a ticket (Bus Eireann) or put it in the box on your left (City Direct) - or show the driver your pass if you are using a weekly or monthly ticket or Travel Pass.
Sit in any seat that is available - however leave the ones very close to the door for people who are elderly / disabled, or who have children in prams etc.

To get off the bus:

Wait until the bus has gone past the stop before the one you want
Push the bell - usually a square red button on the poles in the middle of the bus, with one every two or three rows.

Once the bell is pushed, a sign near the front of the bus usually lights up saying "bus stopping" - once this is lit, the bell does not need to be pushed again.
When the bus reaches your stop, get off.
Some people get up and walk to the door before the bus stops, so they can get off immediately. However you should only do this if it is safe: the bus is travelling fast, or your are unsteady on your feet for any reason, do not stand up until the bus has stopped.

If the driver accidentally misses your stop, either call out or go up to him/her and remind him: don't just wait for the next stop, because it may be some distance away.

Will the driver stop between bus-stops for me?

Bus drivers in Ireland are not supposed to pick up or set down passengers anywhere except at marked bus stops.

To get a licence to operate a bus-service, companies have to get the local gardai (police) to approve the bus-stop sites they intend to use. This is to ensure that the stops are safe for passengers, and do not cause traffic disruptions.

If buses stop at places other than the agreed bus-stops, they are breaking the terms of their licences. If you ask a bus-driver to stop at a place other than an approved bus-stop, you are asking them to break the law.

Some common-sense is applied, for example when a bus is diverted because of road works or some other hazard, it will generally stop at suitable places along the diversion route.

NB: for regional buses, the approved bus stops are not necessarily the same for all companies, and some of the private company bus-stops are not marked with a sign).

This area is not well served by public transport: getting to it involves a 10-15 minute walk along a busy dual-carriageway, and crossing a large, busy, roundabout.

Public Transport Directions:

Catch the 3 - Ballybrit bus. Get off at the Trappers Inn stop: this is the second stop after Liosbán estate, and is just after Riverside estate.

You will need to cross to the other side of the road at some stage. The safest place to do so depends on traffic conditions on the day, so be careful. It may be better closer to the bus stop than further up the road.

Continue walking up the Tuam Rd. Cross the Font roundabout, and follow the main road (it veers slightly to the left). Keep going past the entrance to Ballybane industrial estate, and to North Park retail/industrial estate.

The An Post office is in the City North complex, at the top of the driveway. The entrance to the driveway is a little further down the road, before the car-dealers.

This walk takes 10-15 minutes, and is along a very busy road. Crossing the road can be challenging.

Alternative:
Catch the 9-Parkmore bus.

Get off at the last stop, which is just after the racecourse. Cross the roundabout, and continue to walk straight up Parkmore until you come to an intersection where you have to turn: this is the Tuam Rd. Turn left, and continue walking until you reach the City North complex.

This walk takes longer, but may be safer as the roundabout is a lot less busy.

NB: We have not yet confirmed if there is a footpath on this section of the Tuam road - it may not be a good area for pedestrians.

NB: Some maps (including Google) show a road called "Ballybrit Cresent" going past the racecourse and down to Tuam Rd. However some parts of this road have not been built, so it is not an option for this trip

Things to note about collecting parcels:

You can request An Post to re-deliver items on another day, or to an alternative address
Don't go out to the sorting centre on the same day that you receive a card about having a parcel - because your parcel with still be out with your postie!
Take the card telling you about the parcel and photo ID with you.
There are no standard Post Office services here: you cannot post parcels or purchase stamps from this office.

NB: Many ofhese places are 5-15 minutes walk from Eyre Square.

For St Patrick's church (1 on the map), the Sean Duggan Coach Station (7) and the Tourist Office (6), go to the south-east corner of Eyre Square, and walk up Forster Street. The church is at the top of the street on the left, the tourist office is immediately across the road and the coach station is diagonally across the intersection.

For other locations, catch the 8 - Mervue or 9- Parkmore buses, from Eyre Square (bus details). As the bus leaves the city-centre, it makes a sharp right-hand turn (the tourist office is on the right hand side at the corner). After this:

For the City Council (3) offices and Yeat College (2), get off at the first stop, turn left and walk just down the road.
For the Greyhound track (4), get off at the second stop along College Rd
For Lough Atalia playground (5), get off at the 3rd stop (which is just before the traffic lights).
For the Huntsman (8), get off after the bus turns right again: the hotel is across the road).

Paper-based maps:

A small tourist map of the city centre (east of the Corrib) is available free from the Tourist Office and Tourist Kiosk (shown with a green "I" on this map - which also shows the main Eyre Square bus-stops)

Galway Street Map is a fold-out Ordinance Survey map of the city streets.

The Complete Road Atlas of Ireland: An Tsuirbhaeireacht Ordanaais Atlas Baoithre Na HaEireann Eolai Don Tiomaanaai has a summary level map of the whole city and surrounding area (Oranmore, Castlegar Menlough, Tonabrocky, Barna) and detailed maps of the regional roads. It does not have a detailed map of the city streets.

Maps on GalwayTransport.info are created in Google maps.

Features: search by street or place name, mark places of interest, create custom maps, include other people's places in your map, measure distances, draw shapes etc.

Issues: The River Corrib isn't shown in street-map view (at 20 Jan 10). A few suburban street names are wrong or missing, and some roads that don't exist are shown. Street-data-quality is controlled by Google's data-providers, and it is possible to report problems and get them fixed (search on the Google-maps site for details).

Yahoo MapsDoesn't (yet) have all the functions of Google. Does show the Corrib and maps generally look good. Data quality not yet assessed.

MultimapsYet another system. Doesn't show the Corrib, and has Pearse Stadium in totally the wrong place. But overall data-quality is reported to be good.

Galway City Council
Provides these maps for areas within the City boundaries. Some only work with Internet Explorer.

How are bus-services in Galway organised?

City Buses:

Almost all city bus routes in Galway:

start at Eyre Square,
travel from the city-centre to one or more suburbs
turn around (sometimes at a terminal or roundabout, or sometimes by doing a loop)
return to Eyre Square (sometimes along the same route, sometimes through different suburbs).

If a bus-route does a loop, passengers can get on to the bus at any point and stay on it, without paying another fare, until it reaches the city centre.

Some individual buses do a "through route": they start at the end of one route, travel into the city along that route, pause at Eyre Square, and then do another route. The most common through-route services are:

1S/D (Salthill) and 8 (Mervue)
2E (Lisbeg Lawn/Renmore) - 2W (Seacrest)
4E (Merlin Park) - 4W (Newcastle)
5E (Ballybane) - 5W (Rahoon)

When a bus is operating a through-route service like this, only one fare is paid for the whole trip. However not every individual bus on these routes operates through to the other destination.

Some individual services also continue straight through to another location. Bus Éireann timetables show this with footnotes: eg the 7:40pm #3 service from Ballybrit is marked "continues to Newcastle". There is no guarantee that the "continues to ..." marked on the timetable is still correct, as some have been changed for operational reasons. Passengers may need to to switch buses (and pay an additional fare) at Eyre Square.

Who is responsible for public transport / public transit services in Galway?

No one organisation is responsible for public transport in Galway, or any area in Ireland.

The Ministry of Transport is responsible for licensing commercially operated scheduled bus and ferry services.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) is responsible for

"securing the provision of public passenger land transport services. This includes the provision of subvented bus and rail services by Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus and Irish Rail."

It is expected that the NTA will

"take over responsibility for the licensing of commercial bus services and the regulation of the small public service vehicle sector during 2010."

Galway City Council has a Transportation Unit. but its responsibilities are limited to the City area. The unit is involved in a number of projects to improve the public-transport infrastructure in the city, and in planning for future services.

Local councils are consulted when bus-services are licensed, but the final decisions are made by the central agencies.

Local transport operators must obtain a licence for any public bus service tha the wish to run. They are free to provide public information about their services, but are not required to do so.

GalwayTransport.info (GT.I) is a private initiative that aims to provide public information, for both residents and visitor, about public transport that is available in Galway. In general, it does not show information about planned changes until they are confirmed and have a clear start-date.
