While Sony's decision to bring Gran Turismo 6 to the PlayStation 3 rather than its next-gen console—despite the fact that the two will launch relatively close to one another—may have you a bit puzzled, the PlayStation manufacturer is certain it's the best move for both the company and gamers. Read more on GameRevolution.com

Could MS Be Instituting Visual DRM With Kinect 2?

The eye of Xbox One is ever watching...

At least that's what a new report might have you believe. Back in 2011, Microsoft filed a patent (via ExtremeTech) that, if used, could very well turn the Xbox One's motion camera into a lean mean DRM machine. But how would it work? Read more on GameRevolution.com

EA Teases New Star Wars: Battlefront Title, Will Support Current-Gen Through 2017

It looks like Electronics Arts may very well be moving forward with a new Star Wars: Battlefront title, as company CFO Blake Jorgensen has teased as much.

Speaking in regards to the exclusive publishing rights to Star Wars they just recently secured, Jorgensen explained during the Stifel 2013 Technology Conference:

These aren't movie games, per se; these are stand-alone games. But obviously they would come out near the movies and be able to tailgate off of some of the buzz that will be created around the new Star Wars movies. Read more on GameRevolution.com

PS4 Confirmed To Launch By Year's End In UK

Gamers in the UK can rest easy, the PlayStation 4 will launch in the region before the year is over.

Up until now, there was no word on exactly when the console would be made available in Europe, with many fearing that an early 2014 release was all too probable. Fortunately, a new ad in the UK has assuaged gamers' fears.

Why E3 Is Bad For Previews: Shove-y Swag Guy

In this (brief) series of articles leading up to gaming's Electronic Entertainment Expo, we'll look at why E3 is terrible for previewing games, even if its the first opportunity to go hands-on with the most anticipated titles for the rest of 2013.
Video games have uniquely transportive powers. They can take us to unseen worlds filled with dragons and magic, or they can introduce us to an incredible swath of memorable characters and cast us in the lead role. Sure, there's lots of shooting as well, but no matter the genre, big triple-A blockbusters suck hours from your life with ever increasing fidelity, high-definition surround sound, and engaging controls. None of which comes through in the middle of an unrelenting sea of people, all hoping to rend the controller from your hands in the hopes they'll have hands-on time for themselves. Read more on GameRevolution.com

Everyone always gives me shit for like Mirror's Edge. You know what? Screw you guys. Mirror's Edge was a fun, if unimpressive game, with a neat concept, a hero that wasn't a bald fucking space marine who shot everything that moved, and allowed DICE to spread its wings and try something genuinely new. That's why I'm happy to report we might be learning all about Mirror's Edge 2 very soon. Read more on GameRevolution.com

I'm on a boat.

Okay, so Resident Evil 6 failed to live up to expectations. Throwing the kitchen sink at players and tallying up not three, but four complete RE campaigns didn't capture survival-horror as effectively as we might have hoped. Despite existing in the medium for over 15 years, Capcom's zombie franchise has seen its fair share of diminishing returns. Still, sometimes all you need is a brief vacation to get back into the swing of things.

The reality of writing about games day in and day out makes avoiding a key trailer or plot point impossible, whereas consumers have the benefit of entering a media blackout before a game's release, but that's how I enjoyed Bioshock Infinite. I chose not to watch every trailer and we weren't invited to some early hands-on preview sessions, but I couldn't repeat that for The Last of Us, as much as I'd like. Read more on GameRevolution.com

The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot - Preview

Oh, tell me why... do we build the castles in the sky?

Apparently, a single knight living reclusively in the single castle of his domain can lead to ornately framed dragqueen portraits of himself. At least that's what the announcement trailer for The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot posted below would imply. I mean, what else is he supposed to do after accumulating so much gold... by raiding the castles of all his friends? (This is not an analogy of what I do in real life, I think.) Read more on GameRevolution.com

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D - GR Review

I believe that anyone with a lifelong love of video games started that affair with a deeply memorable experience. Maybe you passed the controller back and forth playing Super Mario Bros. with your sibling, or your Nintendo 64 and Goldeneye 007 (and therefore you) dominated your college dorm. We make connections with games directly, emotionally, through our lives and the people around us, but my love for Nintendo came in the mailbox. When Donkey Kong Land was released in 1995, it didn't take long to wear the yellow out of the cartridge's case, but no matter how much I played the game, I couldn't find a K.

Sanctum 2, the sequel to the original Sanctum (duh), is truly one of a kind. Taking two of the industry's most popular, and arguably overused, genres of today and melding them into one creates something not only wholly fresh and unique, but also deeply complex and multi-layered. While it isn't without its fair share of flaws, Coffee Stain Studios' follow-up to the original Sanctum is unlike anything else out there and, for that very reason, shouldn't be overlooked.

That's it. I promise. There will be no further Russian jokes or puns from here on out; Metro just doesn't support buffoonery at the expense of the motherland. Based on the book by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro 2033 introduced players to life after the bomb(s) where what remains of mankind survives underground and just can't catch a break. If radiation, horrifying mutants, and general shittiness of life don't bring you down, maybe the communists and nazis can. Hardened men fight in tunnels with hand-crafted firearms among other deadly weaponry, but you might still trip and impale yourself on the wreckage, or at the very least get a nasty bout of tetanus from the fall.

Watch Dogs wastes no time in going meta. In the Sears Tower plaza in downtown Chicago, protagonist Aiden Pearce whips out his cell phone and activates an augmented reality game where he sees purple aliens attack the citizens around him. Green pixelated hearts count how many hits he can take before failing the mission, and a score tally racks up points for every kill. Turning off the augmented reality gives us a view on others playing the same game, goofily pointing and shooting with their fingers while business people walk by. A few minutes later, Aiden is reading a man's conversation by text as it happens, setting up an opportunity to stop a potential murder a few blocks away.

Watch that step, and that one, and that one.

Most people associate Donkey Kong with the arcade game. Nintendo's big ape has gone from kidnapping and big-armed banana-robbery to king of the country, but roots laid down as Nintendo's first big hit go deep and I picked them up in Donkey Kong for Game Boy. That title introduced puzzle-platforming to players after the first four levels mimicked Donkey Kong as played in the arcades. I loved that game, but it and my Game Boy Pocket have been lost in time and space for years. Thankfully, Mario and DK have been teaming up for puzzle games on and off since 2004.

Anno Online - Preview

	Planning by numbers.

Anno has always been about slowly, dedicatedly growing your city until its massive scope eclipses your wildest expectations, but with Anno Online, Bluebyte and Ubisoft have seen fit to deliver that experience for free to anyone with a web browser. In developing a free-to-play city-builder light enough to run on almost any computer, Bluebyte takes a bite out of what you'd normally expect in a resource-management sim. Instead of scraping together what I need for expansions and new buildings, I started to leave Anno Online open on my desktop for hours on end while I did something else.

That's the effect free-to-play games have. There's so much waiting around, watching timers tick down until your corn is ready to harvest or, in the case of The Simpsons: Tapped Out, your Krusty is done walking Mr. Teeny. Despite the ire the new genre (er, method of selling you games?) has received among the hardcore, Anno Online's closed beta is polished, accessible, and ready to welcome anyone to its uninhabited shores. You'll be surprised at how fast your civilization can grow (on you).
In the beginning, I tried playing AO full-screen. Finely drawn graphics, diminutive citizens, and smooth animations made me want to blow the resolution up and appreciate everything on screen. The global chat box and your friends list sit in the bottom-left corner, while the quests and important city stats dot the upper-right corner. All of the building buttons are easy to understand, but if, like me, you don't have a clue how to play Anno, a detailed and thorough tutorial section will guide you through the first building blocks your city needs to survive.

I quickly constructed a few dirt roads, settlements and marketplaces for my earliest settlers. Markets and other community fixtures have areas of influence that can overlap and fulfill your citizenship's needs. I won't blame you for wanting to drop Stinky Pete the Pig Farmer's house way out in the boonies, but every settlement needs to have access to services or else they'll remain abandoned.

Progressing further into the build tree unlocked carpenter shops, churches, and more. It wasn't long before my first friend (computer-controlled) was added and our cities could start interacting. You can sell overstocked goods to neighboring city-builders or buy needed resources from them. Your growth and prosperity don't depend on your neighbors, but everything's more fun with friends and Anno's closed beta community has been friendly and energetic so far.
As with any free-to-play game, there are certain things you either have to wait for or shell out the cash for. Building simple structures and making short headway in the game doesn't ask for Rubies, Anno's brand of fake-money, but expanding your land can take time or pilfer your pocket if you're eager. You can also buy coins, wood, hemp islands, and more in the shop. That said, avoiding the pay wall isn't hard.

I learned this early when a clock started to countdown an hour until my development's expansion was complete. I pulled the tab out of my main Google Chrome window and shrunk it to a third of my screen. Anno Online's controls and stats moved to fit in the new size and my view on the world I'd built zoomed out enough to contain everything. Then I went on with my business. Over the course of that hour, I clicked on the window in between posts or e-mails or whatever else I was doing.

I haven't closed that tab in days. Anno Online is still in closed beta, but we've got plenty of codes. Once you get in game, add hampton_stewart to your friends list because I've got way too much fish and not enough wood. Wanna trade?

In Soul Sacrifice you play as an unnamed captive of Magusar, a sorcerer who devours souls. When another captive is killed escaping, in the rubble near your cage you find a magical talking book, Librom, who tells you he holds Magusar's secrets, and the secrets to your survival, if you read him to the end. Written by Magusar's mysterious former partner, the book reveals the game's story, lore, and missions that take you into the author's memories.

I would be friends with Thomas. Seems like a nice fellow, even if it's not… you know, a fellow.
Thomas Was Alone is weird. At its core, it's a game about rectangles with unique abilities that need to be utilized to advance through puzzles. While it might sound entirely basic—and it is—it's also a game that's made me give a flying quadrilateral about these blocks, which I didn't know was possible, even though I've been playing video games since my nubs could hold a controller. And it's all because some writer decided to do some amazing characterization and name the blocks I need to maneuver around to reach the designated space.

I fear no man, no beast or evil, brother!
Critics be damned. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon doesn't give a fuck about them. In fact, it actively doesn't give a fuck about them. How does someone correctly begin a "critical" review about a game whose aesthetic is awesomeness in the most stupidly power-fisted way possible? And by that I mean it's a love letter—nay, more like an infatuation letter—to nearly every male power fantasy in film, television, and video games in the late '80s and early '90s. Every reference you fail to recognize only makes you less awesome.

The Gorn.

Hailing from a single Star Trek (The Original Series) episode titled "Arena," the Gorn is an alien race of lizard-men that do battle with Kirk in the California desert. It's clear now that this is the moment that launched William Shatner's travel-site-spokesmen career. I mean, if you had to dress up in a hot costume, drive out to the desert and hug another dude who also happens to be dressed in a rubber dinosaur costume for hours, you'd want to get away too. I guess in some circles this episode could be coined "beloved" just for its goofy nature, but I wish Namco Bandai and Digital Extremes could have dug deeper for inspiration.
